Slavoj Žižek was born in 1949 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He was a candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Slovenia in 1990. He is the founder and president of the Society for Theoretical Psychoanalysis, Ljubljana. Žižek was a visiting professor at the Department of Psychoanalysis, the University of Paris VIII in 1982–3 and 1985–6; the Centre for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Art, SUNY Buffalo, in 1991–2; the Department of Comparative Literature, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1992; Tulane University, New Orleans, in 1993; Cardozo Law School, New York, in 1994; Columbia University, New York, in 1995; Princeton University in 1996; the New School for Social Research, New York, in 1997; the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1998; and Georgetown University, Washington, in 1999.
