Self Δ-equivalence is an equivalence relation for links, which is stronger than link-homotopy defined by J. W. Milnor. It was shown that any boundary link is link-homotopic to a trivial link by L. Cervantes and R. A. Fenn and by D. Dimovski independently. In this paper we will show that any boundary link is self Δ-equivalent to a trivial link.

Stochastic generators of completely positive and contractive quantum stochastic convolution cocycles on a C*-hyperbialgebra are characterised. The characterisation is used to obtain dilations and stochastic forms of Stinespring decomposition for completely positive convolution cocycles on a C*-bialgebra.

We study equilibrium states in relativistic galactic dynamics which are described by stationary solutions of the Einstein–Vlasov system for collisionless matter. We recast the equations into a regular three-dimensional system of autonomous first order ordinary differential equations on a bounded state space. Based on a dynamical systems analysis we derive new theorems that guarantee that the steady state solutions have finite radii and masses.

Given a Laplace eigenfunction on a surface, we study the distribution of its extrema on the nodal domains. It is classically known that the absolute value of the eigenfunction is asymptotically bounded by the 4th root of the eigenvalue. It turns out that the number of nodal domains where the eigenfunction has an extremum of such order, remains bounded as the eigenvalue tends to infinity. We also observe that certain restrictions on the distribution of nodal extrema and a version of the Courant nodal domain theorem are valid for a rather wide class of functions on surfaces. These restrictions follow from a bound in the spirit of Kronrod and Yomdin on the average number of connected components of level sets.

A new approach for studying initial-boundary value problems for linear partial differential equations (PDEs) with variable coefficients was introduced recently by the second author, and was applied to PDEs involving second order derivatives. Here, we extend this approach further to solve an initial-boundary value problem for a third-order evolution PDE with a space-dependent coefficient. The analysis is presented in such a way that it can be applied to PDEs with higher derivatives, and thus provides a method for solving initial-boundary value problems for a certain class of linear evolution equations with variable coefficients of arbitrary order.

In this paper we describe solutions of the equation: F(A(z)) = G(B(z)), where A,B are polynomials and F,G are continuous functions on the Riemann sphere.

The Stokes operator E2 governs the irrotational axisymmetric Stokes flow and its square governs the corresponding rotational flow. In spheroidal coordinates the elements of the solution space ker E2 enjoy a spectral decomposition into separable eignefunction, while the elements of the ker E4 accept a spectral decomposition in terms of semiseparable eigensolutions involving 3D-by-3D eigenfunctions of the Gegenbauer operator. These spectral characteristics are utilized to construct the fundamental solutions for both the E2 and the E4 operators in spheroidal geometry. The fundamental solution for E2 is expressed in terms of the elements of the irrotational space ker E2, while the fundamental solution for E4 is expressed in terms of the corresponding generalized eigenfunctions alone.

For analytic functions in the unit disk, general bounds on the Schwarzian derivative in terms of Nehari functions are shown to imply uniform local univalence and in some cases finite and bounded valence. Similar results are obtained for the Weierstrass–Enneper lifts of planar harmonic mappings to their associated minimal surfaces. Finally, certain classes of harmonic mappings are shown to have finite Schwarzian norm.

We fill a gap in the construction of the extended Johnson homomorphism, stated in Section 2 of the paper The abelianization of the congruence IA-automorphism group of a free group.

We study a planar polynomial differential system, given by . We consider a function , where gi(x) are algebraic functions of with ak(x) and algebraic functions, A0(x,y) and A1(x,y) do not share any common factor, h2(x) is a rational function, h(x) and h1(x) are functions of x with a rational logarithmic derivative and . We show that if I(x,y) is a first integral or an integrating factor, then I(x,y) is a Darboux function. A Darboux function is a function of the form , where fi and h are polynomials in and the λi's are complex numbers. In order to prove this result, we show that if g(x) is an algebraic particular solution, that is, if there exists an irreducible polynomial f(x,y) such that f(x,g(x)) ≡ 0, then f(x,y) = 0 is an invariant algebraic curve of the system. In relation with this fact, we give some characteristics related to particular solutions and functions of the form I(x,y) such as the structure of their cofactor.

Moreover, we consider A0(x,y), A1(x,y) and h2(x) as before and a function of the form . We show that if the derivative of Φ(x,y) with respect to the flow is well defined over {(x,y): A0(x,y) = 0} then Φ(x,y) gives rise to an exponential factor. This exponential factor has the form exp {R(x,y)} where and with B1/B0 a function of the same form as h2A1/A0. Hence, exp {R(x,y)} factorizes as the product Φ(x,y) Ψ(x,y), for Ψ(x,y): = exp {B1/B0.
