The apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene has been identified as a major risk factor for the development of Alzheimer’s disease in late life. Research has shown that APOE e4 allele carriers demonstrate poorer memory performance and accelerated cognitive decline relative to non-carriers, and there is a need to identify potential factors of resiliency against the negative effects of e4 on cognition. Social support may represent one potential mechanism given that higher levels of social support have been linked to better cognitive and functional outcomes in older adults. Thus, the current study sought to examine whether social support moderates the relationship between APOE e4 status and subjective and objective memory performance in a large community-based sample of Hispanic/Latino (H/L) and Non-Hispanic White (NHW) older adults residing in Texas.

Participants included 1,564 (H/L = 808, NHW = 756) older adults (mean age = 66.36±8.68) without dementia that had enrolled in the Health and Aging Brain Study-Health Disparities. Participants completed study questionnaires and a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Apolipoprotein e4 status (e4 carriers vs. non-carriers) was determined by possession of at least one e4 allele. Perceived social support was measured using the total score from the abbreviated 12-item version of the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List. Objective memory performance was assessed using a z-score composite of Story A and B from the Weschler Memory Scale (WMS)-III and immediate and delayed recall trials from the Spanish-English Verbal Learning Test. Subjective memory was assessed using the total score from the Subject Memory Complaints Questionnaire. Race stratified multiple linear regression models, controlling for age, sex, and years of education, examined APOE e4 positivity x social support interactions on subjective and objective memory performance.

There was a significant APOE e4 genotype x social support interaction on objective memory performance (ß = -1.10, p = 0.003) in H/Ls such that higher levels of social support were associated with better memory performance in non-e4 carriers (ß = 0.14, p < .001), but not in e4 carriers (ß = -0.13, p = 0.9). In contrast, no significant APOE e4 status x social support interaction was observed on subjective memory (ß = -0.39, p = 0.35) in H/Ls. Finally, results revealed no significant APOE e4 genotype x social support interactions on subjective memory (ß = 0.14 p = 0.77) or objective memory (ß = 0.67, p = 0.11) performance in NHWs. Conclusions: Findings revealed that social support did not mitigate against the negative effects of e4 on subjective and objective memory performance in H/Ls or NHWs. However, results demonstrate that higher levels of social support are associated with better objective, but not subjective memory performance in H/Ls without the e4 genotype. These findings suggest that social support may protect against cognitive decline and enhance cognitive reserve in non-e4 carriers. Future studies should explore other potential factors of resiliency (e.g., diet, exercise) and examine the association between genetic risk and social support on neural markers (e.g., cortical thinning, hippocampal atrophy).

Injection drug use is a significant public health crisis with adverse health outcomes, including increased risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Comorbidity of HIV and injection drug use is highly prevalent in the United States and disproportionately elevated in surrounding territories such as Puerto Rico. While both HIV status and injection drug use are independently known to be associated with cognitive deficits, the interaction of these effects remains largely unknown. The aim of this study was to determine how HIV status and injection drug use are related to cognitive functioning in a group of Puerto Rican participants. Additionally, we investigated the degree to which type and frequency of substance use predict cognitive abilities.

96 Puerto Rican adults completed the Neuropsi Attention and Memory-3rd Edition battery for Spanish-speaking participants. Injection substance use over the previous 12 months was also obtained via clinical interview. Participants were categorized into four groups based on HIV status and injection substance use in the last 30 days (HIV+/injector, HIV+/non-injector, HIV/injector, HIV-/non-injector). One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine differences between groups on each index of the Neuropsi battery (Attention and Executive Function; Memory; Attention and Memory). Multiple linear regression was used to determine whether type and frequency of substance use predicted performance on these indices while considering HIV status.

The one-way ANOVAs revealed significant differences (p’s < 0.01) between the healthy control group and all other groups across all indices. No significant differences were observed between the other groups. Injection drug use, regardless of the substance, was associated with lower combined attention and memory performance compared to those who inject less than monthly (Monthly: p = 0.04; 2-3x daily: p < 0.01; 4-7x daily: p = 0.02; 8+ times daily: p < 0.01). Both minimal and heavy daily use predicted poorer memory performance (p = 0.02 and p = 0.01, respectively). Heavy heroin use predicted poorer attention and executive functioning (p = 0.04). Heroin use also predicted lower performance on tests of memory when used monthly (p = 0.049), and daily or almost daily (2-6x weekly: p = 0.04; 4-7x daily: p = 0.04). Finally, moderate injection of heroin predicted lower scores on attention and memory (Weekly: p = 0.04; 2-6x weekly: p = 0.048). Heavy combined heroin and cocaine use predicted worse memory performance (p = 0.03) and combined attention and memory (p = 0.046). HIV status was not a moderating factor in any circumstance.

As predicted, residents of Puerto Rico who do not inject substances and are HIVnegative performed better in domains of memory, attention, and executive function than those living with HIV and/or inject substances. There was no significant difference among the affected groups in cognitive ability. As expected, daily injection of substances predicted worse performance on tasks of memory. Heavy heroin use predicted worse performance on executive function and memory tasks, while heroin-only and combined heroin and cocaine use predicted worse memory performance. Overall, the type and frequency of substance is more predictive of cognitive functioning than HIV status.

A 30-item confrontation naming test was developed in Argentina for Spanish speakers, The Cordoba Naming Test (CNT). The Boston Naming Test is an established confrontation naming task in the United States. Researchers have used the Boston Naming Test to identify individuals with different clinical pathologies (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease). The current literature on how Spanish speakers across various countries perform on confrontational naming tasks is limited. To our knowledge, one study investigated CNT performance across three Spanish-speaking countries (i.e., Argentina, Mexico, and Guatemala). Investigators found that the Guatemalan group underperformed on the CNT compared to the Argentine and Mexican groups. The purpose of this study was to extend the current literature and investigate CNT performance across five Spanish-speaking countries (i.e., Argentina, Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, United States). We predicted that the Argentine group would outperform the other Spanish-speaking countries.

The present study sample consisted of 502 neurologically and psychologically healthy participants with a mean age of 29.06 (SD = 13.41) with 14.75 years of education completed (SD = 3.01). Participants were divided into five different groups based on their country of birth and current country residency (i.e., United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Argentina, & Colombia). All participants consented to voluntary participation and completed the CNT and a comprehensive background questionnaire in Spanish. The CNT consisted of 30 black and white line drawings, ranging from easy to hard in difficulty. An ANCOVA, controlling for gender, education, and age, was used to evaluate CNT performance between the five Spanish-speaking country groups. Meanwhile, a Bonferroni post-hoc test was utilized to evaluate the significant differences between Spanish-speaking groups. We used a threshold of p < .05 for statistical significance.

Results revealed significant group differences between the five Spanish speaking groups on the CNT, p = .000, np2 = .48. Bonferroni post-hoc test revealed that the United States group significantly underperformed on the CNT compared to all the Spanish-speaking groups. Next, we found the Guatemalan group underperformed on the CNT compared to the Argentinian, Mexican, and Colombian groups. Additionally, we found the Argentinian group outperformed the Mexican, Guatemalan, and United States groups on the CNT. No significant differences were found between the Argentinian group and Colombian group or the Mexican group and Colombian group on the CNT.

As predicted, the Argentinian group outperformed all the Spanish-speaking groups on the CNT except the Colombian group. Additionally, we found that the United States group underperformed on the CNT compared to all the Spanish-speaking groups. A possible explanation is that Spanish is not the official language in the United States compared to the rest of the Spanish-speaking groups. Meanwhile, a possible reason why the Argentinian and Colombian groups demonstrated better CNT performances might have been that it was less culturally sensitive than the United States, Mexican, and Guatemalan groups. Further analysis is needed with bigger sample sizes across other Spanish-speaking countries (e.g., Costa Rica, Chile) to evaluate what variables, if any, are influencing CNT performance.

Converging evidence across languages suggests that the word length effect (WLE; rate of number of syllables, phonemes, or pronunciation times per word) significantly contributes to estimates of verbal working memory (WM) capacity limits in the storage phase, but not in the manipulation phase (i.e., word length effect decay), of WM. Direct examination of the WLE on verbal WM performance within monolingual Spanish-speakers has not been reported. We investigated the psychophysical mechanisms of capacity consumption in Spanish-speakers across three syllabic word length rates to clarify the relative contributions of the WLE to storage (digit span forward) versus manipulation (digit span backward) memory phases within one language of monolingual speakers.

Monolingual Spanish-speaking adults (N = 84) born in Latin American countries and age 18-65 completed testing over Zoom. Inclusion criteria required proficiency in the Spanish-language; exclusion criteria were bilingualism, multilingualism, TONI-4 IQ < 85, or history of head injury/LOC. A within-group design measured the WLE across three cognitive load conditions in the forward and backward directions of the digit span test varying in Spanish syllabic word length: the Mexican WAIS-IV Digit Span Test (“Standard Load”), and two modified measures with either a ∼20% decrease (“Low Load”) or ∼20% increase (“High Load”) in total syllables/digit relative to the Standard Load.

A reverse WLE was observed on syllable accuracy percentage task performance (p < 0.01), such that longer word length led to higher capacity limits during storage WM. A WLE, not decay, was found on both raw score (p < .001) and syllable accuracy percentage (p < 0.01) task performances during manipulation WM, where longer word length led to lower capacity limits.

The reverse WLE was attributed to higher-order, executive-function cognitive strategies (such as chunking) that superseded negative word length effects. A larger syllabic discrepancy during manipulation WM could have superseded executive-function strategies, rendering a traditional WLE. Our study contributed more precise capacity estimates and clearer understanding of successful WM performance within monolingual, Latin American-born Spanish-speakers, helping to reduce cultural disparities in neurocognitive and neuropsychological research. Future studies may extend these findings to examine how WM capacity resources can be harnessed to improve memory strategies in clinically-applied settings with Spanish-speaking populations.

In South Africa, most of the cognitive tests employed for neuropsychological evaluation are those developed in educationally advantaged settings such as the US, but the normative data accompanying the tests are unsuitable for use with South African examinees who have a disadvantaged quality of education, and/or whose primary language is other than English. A recently completed collation of Africa-based normative data (Shuttleworth-Edwards & Truter, 2022) includes a chapter on Performance Validity Tests (PVTs) with proposed cut-off points to assist in the identification of noncredible performance. The aim of this study was to compare the cut-off points established using educationally disadvantaged South African nonclinical normative samples for which only specificity percentages are available, with those established using clinical samples with designated valid and invalid performers for which both specificity and sensitivity data are available. A further aim was to compare the Africa-based cut-off points with age-equivalent cut-off points where available for US-based data on the targeted tests.

The collation of Africa-based studies delineates cut-off scores for invalid test performance based on both nonclinical as well as clinical populations for three stand-alone PVTs especially developed to identify invalid performance including the Dot Counting Test (DCT), the Rey Fifteen Item Test (FIT), and the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM); and three commonly employed cognitive tests for which there are embedded validity indicators including the Digit Span Age-Corrected Scaled Score (ACSS) and Reliable Digit Span (RDS), the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), and the Trail Making Test A and B (TMT A and B). For studies using nonclinical norming data alone, specificity percentages to derive the cut-off points were set at a minimum of 90%. For studies using clinical samples specificity was set at a minimum of 90%, and the associated sensitivity percentages were reported indicating each test’s ability to correctly identify those with an invalid performance. The studies included participants stratified for both child and adult age groups (age 8 to 79 years) from South African educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. The data were tabled together for descriptive comparison purposes, including a column for the US-base cut-off points for equivalent age stages where available.

There was a high level of compatibility between the proposed cut-off points established for the South African nonclinical normative samples compared with those using clinical samples of designated valid and invalid performers. There was a trend for more lenient cut-offs for younger children and older adults compared to older children and younger adults. Compared with US-based data where available, adjustments towards leniency were called-for on all indicators.

Cut-off scores for invalid cognitive test performance can be verified by perusing data derived from nonclinical norming samples as well as those from clinical samples, although the latter have the advantage of providing the sensitivity data to demonstrate the efficacy of a proposed cut-off score for identifying noncredible test performance. Adjustments towards leniency need to be made for cut-off scores for young children and older adults within an educationally disadvantaged population, and for disadvantaged adult populations compared with US-based educationally advantaged populations.

Despite the rise in literacy, 773 million of the global population is estimated to be illiterate. The rate of illiteracy is even higher among women and older adults (OA). Literacy has been well documented to impact cognitive skills, and most neuropsychological tests developed are for individuals with higher education. Moreover, there is sparse research on cognitive process and performance of illiterate individuals across cognitive domains.

Per a 2011 census, the illiteracy rate in the Indian older adult population was as high as 56%, and within this group, women and older adults in rural regions were especially vulnerable. Thus, it is important to understand cognitive performance of illiterate Indian older adult population, especially when they are being assessed for neurodegenerative disorders.

This study used subset of data from Harmonized Longitudinal Aging Study of India, Diagnostic Assessment of Dementia (LASI DAD), which was developed by the Gateway to Global Aging Data. A sample of cognitive healthy OA (n = 715) was selected based on Hindi Mental Status Exam score of >19 and a Clinical Dementia Rating Scale of 0 (literate = 419, illiterate = 296). Given the heterogeneity of the population, adapted cognitive instruments were used. This study compared memory performances, using word list and constructional praxis with delayed recall tasks, of OA based on their literacy status (illiterate vs. literate).

Literate cognitive healthy OA (M = 15.27, SD = 3.9) learned more words over three trials than illiterate OA (M = 12.17, SD = 3.7) on a world list task, a statistically significant difference (M = 3.1, 95% CI [2.5, 3.6], t (713) = 10.62, p<0.05. Literate OA (M = 8.7, SD = 2.2) had higher scores on task of copy of simple geometrical figures than illiterate OA (M = 5.3, SD = 2.8), a statistically significant difference (M = 3.3, 95% CI [2.9, 3.7], t (713) = 7.1, p<0.05. Literate OA (M = 4.5, SD = 1.8) also recalled more words than illiterate OA (M = 3.6, SD = 2.1) after a delay. Recall of geometric figures after a delay was higher for literate OA (M = 5, SD = 2.9) as well compared to illiterate OA (M = 2.4, SD = 2.5).

Conclusion: In a sample of cognitively healthy Indian older adults, literate OA consistently performed better than illiterate OA on both verbal and nonverbal memory measures. This is consistent with past literature which shows that illiterate individuals take longer to learn verbal information and have lower recall. Additionally, use of geometric figure may be complicated for these individuals. These are important considerations when assessing an OA for memory problems with low or no education. Next steps would be to look at differences across other cognitive domains and also examining if cognitive differences exist in illiterate OA based on gender.

The research examining the influence of bilingualism on cognition continues to grow. Past research shows that monolingual speakers outperformed bilingual speakers on language, memory, and attention and processing speed tasks. However, the opposite has been found favoring bilingual speakers, when comparing executive functioning abilities. Furthermore, researchers have reported that no differences in executive functioning abilities exist between young adult monolingual speakers compared to young adult bilingual speakers. Moreover, limited research exists examining cognition abilities between monolinguals, bilinguals that learn a language (e.g., English) first, and bilinguals that learn the same language (e.g., English) second. We examined young adult monolinguals cognition abilities (e.g., memory) compared to young adult bilinguals that learned English as a first or second language. It was expected that the monolingual group would outperform both bilingual groups on memory, language, and attention and processing tasks, but no differences would be found on executive functioning tasks.

The sample consisted of 149 right-handed undergraduate students with a mean age of 19.58 (SD = 1.90). Participants were neurologically and psychologically healthy and divided into three language groups: English first language (EFL) monolingual speakers, EFL bilingual speakers, and English second language (ESL) bilingual speakers. All the participants completed a background questionnaire and comprehensive neuropsychological battery that included memory, language, executive functioning, and attention and processing speed tasks in English. A series of ANOVA’s were used to evaluate cognitive tasks (e.g., Boston Naming Test, Trail Making Test) between the language groups. Participants demonstrated adequate effort on one performance validity test.

Language groups were well demographically matched. We found the EFL monolingual group outperformed the ESL bilingual group on the Wide Range Achievement Test, fourth edition task and the Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT) phonemic task, p’s < .05, np’s2 = .04-.05. Additionally, results revealed both monolingual groups outperformed the ESL bilingual group on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Third edition vocabulary task and the Boston Naming Test, p’s < .05, np’s2 = .06-.15. No significant differences were found on any of the cognitive tasks between the EFL monolingual group and the EFL bilingual group.

As expected, the ESL bilingual group performed worse on language tasks compared to both monolingual groups, specifically the EFL monolingual group. However, in the opposite direction, we found the EFL monolingual demonstrated better phonemic verbal fluency abilities on the COWAT compared to the ESL bilingual group. The current data suggest that bilingualism influences cognitive abilities (e.g., language, executive functioning) more ESL bilingual speakers compared to EFL monolingual speakers. A possible explanation may be due to the type of interaction that ESL bilingual speakers may prefer to have (i.e., mix language conversations) compared to EFL speaking groups. Future studies with a larger bilingual speaking sample should investigate if the Adaptive Control Hypothesis which suggest that different types of conversations may be placing different demands of language control influences cognitive abilities.

Differences between monolinguals and bilinguals have been documented in neuropsychological test performance. Various explanations have been provided to explain why differences exist among these language groups. Hispanic-Americans are individuals born and reside in the United States and have a family background extending to one of the Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America or Spain. Furthermore, Hispanic-American children from Hispanic homes where Spanish is their first language find themselves academically at a disadvantage because their English vocabulary may be lower than English monolinguals. Time perspective (TP) refers to an individual’s orientation towards the past, present, or future. One’s ability to change their TP in order to adapt to changes in cultural context can result in optimal psychological well-being. In one study, researchers reported no relationship existed between ethnicity and TP on cognition. To our knowledge, no study has examined the relationship between language and TP in Hispanic-Americans’ speed attention performance. Therefore, it was predicted that monolinguals would outperform bilinguals on speed attention tasks. Next, it was predicted that monolinguals would report higher scores on future time orientation compared to bilinguals, and bilinguals would report higher scores on past and present time orientation compared to monolinguals. Finally, differences in TP would correlate with speed attention tasks between language groups.

The sample consisted of 119 Hispanic-Americans with a mean age of 19.45 (SD = 1.43). Participants were broken into three groups: English first language monolingual (EFLM), English first language bilingual (EFLB), and English second language bilingual (ESLB). The Comalli Stroop part A and B, Trail Making Test part A, and Symbol Digit Modalities Test written and oral parts were used to evaluate speed attention and the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory was used to evaluate time orientation in our sample.

ANOVAs revealed the EFLM group outperformed the ESLB group on the Comalli Stroop part B, p = .020, np2 = .07. Next, we also found on the Symbol Digit Modalities Test written part the EFLB group outperformed both bilingual groups, p = .025, np2 = .06. Regarding TP, the EFLB group reported higher past negative orientation compared to the EFLM group, p = .033, np2 = .06. Additionally, we found the bilingual groups reported higher present-fatalistic compared to the EFLM group, p = .023, np2 = .06. Pearson’s correlation revealed no significant correlations between TP and speed attention tasks on any of our language groups.

As expected, the EFLM group outperformed the ESLB group on several speed attention tasks, but the EFLM group only outperformed the EFLB group on the Symbol Digit Modalities Test written part. Additionally, we found that our EFLB sample reported higher orientation of the past and present compared to monolinguals. Our sample level of acculturation could have been a factor influencing the relationship between TP and speed attention. Future studies using larger representative samples should include measures of acculturation and examine if TP influences other cognitive domains (e.g., executive function) in Hispanic-American monolingual and bilingual speakers.

To investigate differences in performance on a widely used cognitive screener between community-dwelling older adults from two disparate socioeconomic groups.

Participants were part of a larger study of cognitive screening in healthy older adults. The total sample (N=79, 69.6% female, 19% White/Caucasian, 12.7% Asian, 43% Latino/a, 25.3% Black/African-American) consisted of community-dwelling adults (Mage=73.1 years [SD=7.2] and Meducation=14.3 years [SD=2.6]) who were initially recruited via social media, flyers, and general community announcements. A lack of ethnic minority participants resulted in a two-year commitment to reach communities of color via visits and provision of health literacy to local religious and community programs. Continuous contact with leaders/gatekeepers helped establish research study credibility and forge a stronger sense of trust among ethnically diverse participants in the greater Houston, TX, area. Testing was initially conducted at the clinical study site. Due to low participation rates among people of color, greater effort was placed on tailored strategies to overcome economic and time constraints (i.e., schedule/time conflicts, lack of transportation, inability to pay for parking). To fit the priorities and needs of the participants, testing was also conducted at their homes (25.3%) and nearby religious and community centers (22.8%). Participants identifying as Latino/a or Black were predominantly recruited and tested at their local community center (as requested by gatekeepers/participants) to increase access to the study, in contrast to Caucasian participants. Median income estimates were used to stratify participants by socioeconomic status (SES) based on zip codes into low SES (L-SES) or high SES (H-SES) groups.

Participants from the L-SES group had significantly lower total scores on the MoCA than their H-SES counterparts, t(77J=2.837, p=0.003, g=0.696. The average MoCA total score for participants from the L-SES group was 2.64 points lower. The observed differences in MoCA total score when stratifying by ethnicity may be attributable to differences in education level and SES, which are known risk factors for cognitive impairment and will be further examined upon recruitment completion.

Studies have found that ethnically diverse older adults not only encounter more barriers to accessing quality health care but also experience disparities in brain health research. Communities of color comprise a sizeable portion of our older adults but have been traditionally underrepresented in clinical research, limiting the generalizability of research findings to clinical treatment. Socioeconomic deprivation has been identified as one of several barriers to research engagement for people of color, placing ethnic communities at increased risk for under- or misdiagnosis and limited access to medical intervention. Preliminary findings have implications for the recruitment of ethnically diverse groups in clinical research. Given the growing racial and ethnic diversity among the United States population, we must do our due diligence to increase understanding of participation and recruitment barriers for racial/ethnic individuals. Tailored community outreach and engagement strategies may be effective in improving the inclusion of ethnically diverse populations and facilitating recruitment and retention in clinical research studies.

The Latinx population is rapidly aging and growing in the US and is at increased risk for stroke and dementia. We examined whether bilingualism confers cognitive resilience following stroke in a community-based sample of Mexican American (MA) older adults.

Participants included predominantly urban, non-immigrant MAs aged 65+ from the Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi- Cognitive study. Participants were recruited using a two-stage area probability sample with door-to-door recruitment until the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic; sampling and recruitment were then completed via telephone. Cognition was assessed with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA; 30-item in-person, 22-item via telephone) in English or Spanish. Bilingualism was assessed via a questionnaire and degree of bilingualism was calculated (range 0%-100% bilingual). Stroke history was collected via self-report. We harmonized the 22-item to the 30-item MoCA using published equipercentile equating. We conducted a series of regressions with the harmonized MoCA score as the dependent variable, stroke history and degree of bilingualism as independent variables, and age, sex/gender, education, assessment language, assessment mode (in-person vs. phone), and self-reported vascular risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease) as covariates. We included a stroke history by bilingualism interaction to examine whether bilingualism modifies the association between stroke history and MoCA performance.

Participants included 841 MA older adults (59% women; age M(SE) = 73.5(0.2); 44% less than high school education). Most (77%) of the sample completed the MoCA in English. 93 of 841 participants reported a history of stroke. In an unadjusted model, degree of bilingualism (b = 3.41, p < .0001) and stroke history (b = -1.98, p = .003) were associated with MoCA performance. In a fully adjusted model, stroke history (b = -1.79, p = .0007) but not bilingualism (b = 0.78, p = .21) was associated with MoCA performance. When an interaction term was added to the fully adjusted model, the interaction between stroke history and bilingualism was not significant (b= -0.47, p = .78).

Degree of bilingualism does not modify the association between stroke history and MoCA performance in Mexican American older adults. These results should be replicated in samples of validated strokes, more comprehensive bilingualism and cognitive assessments, and in other bilingual populations.

Hispanics account for approximately 19% of the US population and are the second largest ethnic group in the United States, yet they remain underrepresented in neuropsychology research. Common recruitment barriers include language, fear/mistrust, and unfamiliarity with neuropsychology. These recruitment challenges then interfere with the development of measures normed on Spanish-speaking Hispanics. The research team for a Spanish-based neuropsychological study at a pediatric medical setting in North Texas utilized several methods to maximize recruitment of Hispanics and identify the most successful strategies. It was hypothesized that internal recruitment efforts would have the best outcome.

Recruitment of healthy Spanish-speaking children between 6.0 and 17.11 years old began in October 2021 and continues to date. Participants have been recruited within the Dallas Fort-Worth (DFW) metroplex using internal efforts within the pediatric medical center and external efforts in the community-at-large. Internal recruitment efforts have included: 1) setting up flyers at 19 different ambulatory clinics, 2) emailing study flyer to several internal groups, and 3) sharing information during a Hispanic workgroup meeting. Community-based efforts have included collaborating with: 1) a Spanishimmersion private elementary school (i.e., shared information with parents via email and sent flyers home with students), 2) three mental health colleagues (i.e., displayed study flyers within their clinic space and promoted study through word-of-mouth), 3) a local city council (i.e., featured flyer in electronic newsletter), and 4) a non-profit community organization (i.e., shared information and flyer through mass-text messages, social media post, and mass email to subscribers).

To date, 74 parent-child pairs have made one-time contact with the research team to inquire about the study and 55 have completed a second contact with initial screener by phone (19 lost to follow up). Of the screened families, 58% heard of the study through the non-profit organization, 31% through the Spanish-immersion private school, and 11% from internal recruitment efforts.

Although we hypothesized that internal -based recruitment within the medical institution would be most fruitful, our findings did not support this hypothesis. A possible explanation could be that children recruited from medical clinics may not meet criteria for participation in our study (i.e., healthy children). Another possible reason may be that flyer-based recruitment in a medical clinic is too passive or impersonal. Recruitment through community organizations with sources known and trusted by participants was found to be the most successful method to recruit potential participants. Considering these findings, our approach to recruitment will move away from passive and indirect methods of recruitment (i.e., flyers in clinics) and emphasize alliance with community-based organizations to promote trust building and collaborative relationships between researchers, community organizations, and Hispanic research participants.

The Cordoba Naming Test (CNT) is a 30-item confrontation naming task. The administration of the CNT can be administered in multiple languages. Hardy and Wright (2018) conditionally validated a measure of perceived mental workload called the National Aeronautic Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). They found that workload ratings on the NASA-TLX increased with increased demands on a cognitive task. Researchers found interactions in a study examining language proficiency and language (i.e., in which the test was administered) on several tasks of the Golden Stroop Test. Their results revealed that unbalanced bilinguals’ best-spoken language showed significantly better results compared to balanced bilinguals’ where language use did not matter. To our knowledge, no study has examined the order effects of Spanish-English bilingual speakers’ CNT performance and perceived workloads when completed in Spanish first compared to English second and vice-versa. We predicted that persons that completed the CNT in English first would demonstrate better performances and report lower perceived workloads on the CNT compared to completing the CNT in Spanish second. In addition, we predicted that persons that completed the CNT in Spanish first would demonstrate worse performance and higher perceived workloads on the CNT compared to completing the CNT in English second.

The sample consisted of 62 Spanish-English healthy and neurologically bilingual speakers with a mean age of 19.94 (SD= 3.36). Thirty-seven participants completed the CNT in English first and then in Spanish (English-to-Spanish) and 25 participants completed the CNT in Spanish first and then in English (Spanish-to-English). The NASA-TLX was used to evaluate CNT perceived workloads. All the participants completed the NASA-TLX in English and Spanish after completing the CNT in the language given, respectfully. A series of paired-samples T-Tests were completed to evaluate groups CNT performance and perceived workload.

We found that the English-to-Spanish group performed better on the CNT in English first than completing it in Spanish second, p = .000. We also found that the English-to-Spanish group reported better performance and less mentally demanding on the CNT when it was completed in English first compared to completing it in Spanish second, p’s < .05. Regarding the Spanish-to-English group, we found participants performed worse when they completed the CNT in Spanish first compared to completing the CNT in English second, p = .000. Finally, the Spanish-to-English group reported worse performance completing the CNT in Spanish first, more temporal demanding, and more frustrating compared to completing the CNT in English second, p’s < .05.

As expected, when participants completed the CNT in English, regardless of the order, they performed better and reported lower perceived workloads compared to completing the CNT in Spanish. Our data suggests that language order effect influenced participants CNT performance possibly due to not knowing specific items in Spanish compared to in English. Future studies using larger sample sizes should evaluate language order effects on the CNT in Spanish-English balanced bilingual speakers compared to unbalanced bilingual speakers.

A common neuropsychological task used is the Digit Span, known as a test of attention and working memory. The Digit Span Forward (DS-F) task evaluates attention; meanwhile, the Digit Span Backward (DS-B) and Sequencing (DS-S) evaluate working memory. Research shows that persons that speak multiple languages demonstrate better attention and working memory abilities compared to monolingual speakers. The NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) was conditionally validated by Hardy and Wright (2018) to measure perceived mental workload. Research also shows that bilinguals report higher perceived workloads on cognitive tasks compared to monolinguals. With that said, it was hypothesized that bilinguals would demonstrate better performances on Digit Span tasks compared to monolinguals. Additionally, it was hypothesized that bilinguals would report higher perceived workloads on all digit span tasks compared to monolinguals.

The sample consisted of 29 psychologically and neurologically healthy participants with a mean age of 29.66 (SD = 7.14). Participants were divided into two groups: English monolingual speakers (n = 10) and English and other language bilingual speakers (n = 19).

Participants completed all the subtests of the Digit Span (i.e., DS-F, DS-B, DS-S) in English. The NASA-TLX was used to measured DS-F, DS-B, and DS-S perceived workloads. The NASA-TLX was completed after each Digit Span subtest in English. We used ANOVAs to evaluate DS-F, DS-B, and DS-S performance and their perceived workload between our language groups.

We found no significant differences between language groups on the DS-F. However, the bilingual group reported the DS-F to be more temporally demanding and frustrating compared to the monolingual group, p’s < .05, nps2 =.14-.15. Next, we found that the monolingual group outperformed the bilingual group on the DS-B task, p = .027, np2 = .17. On the other hand, the bilingual group reported the DS-B task to be more temporally demanding and frustrating compared to the monolingual group, p’s < .05, nps2=.18-.20. Finally, on the DS-S task the monolingual group outperformed the bilingual group, p = .043, np2 = .14. Meanwhile, the bilingual group reported the DS-S task to be more mentally and temporally demanding compared to the monolingual group, p’s < .05, nps2=.18-.34.

Contrary to our hypothesis, results show that monolinguals outperformed bilinguals on DS-B and DS-S, but not DS-F. However, as expected, bilinguals did report higher perceived workloads (e.g., frustration) on Digit Span tasks compared to monolinguals. A possible explanation could be that bilinguals’ efforts to remember the numbers were more taxing compared to monolinguals’ because they had to inhibit from verbally responding in their other language. Rushing bilinguals to provide responses, ultimately developing higher perceived workloads on Digit Span tasks. Future work should investigate if time perspective may be influencing bilingual speakers Digit Span performances and perceived workloads.

The Cordoba Naming Test (CNT) is a 30-item lexical retrieval task that was developed to be administered in multiple languages. Research shows that self-identifying Mexicans residing in Mexico outperform self-identifying Mexicans that reside in the United States on the CNT. Studies indicate that the process of acculturation can influence cognitive performance. Previous studies demonstrated that Generation Z individuals (i.e., people born between 1997 and 2012) have underperformed on the CNT compared to Generation Y individuals (i.e., people born between 1981 and 1996). To our knowledge, no study has examined the influence of acculturation on Generation Z Mexicans’ CNT performance. We expected Mexicans residing in Mexico (MRM) to outperform Mexicans residing in the United States on the CNT and to report higher acculturation traits. We also predicted that acculturation would correlate with CNT performance.

The present study sample consisted of 285 Generation Z psychologically and neurologically healthy Mexicans with a mean age of 20.32 (SD = 1.60). Participants were divided into three groups: MRM, Mexicans residing in the United States, and Mexican-Americans residing in the United States (MARUS). All participants completed the CNT and acculturation measure in Spanish. Acculturation traits were measured by the Abbreviated Multidimensional Acculturation Scale (AMAS). ANCOVAs were used to evaluate differences in the CNT and AMAS (i.e., Spanish language, Latino competency, Latino identity). Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the relationship between acculturation on CNT performance.

MRM outperformed the Mexicans residing in the United States and MARUS on the CNT, p = .000, np2 = .49. The MRM group reported better Spanish language abilities compared to Mexicans residing in the United States and the MARUS groups, p = .000, np2 = .10. Additionally, MRM reported better Latino competency than the MARUS group, p = .000, np2 = .08. Pearson’s correlation coefficient revealed that the MARUS’s Spanish language abilities impacted CNT performance, p = .000, r = .48. In addition, we found that Latino competency correlated with CNT performance, p’s < .05, r’s = .20-.47, in both the MRM and Mexicans residing in the United States groups. Latino identity did not significantly correlate with CNT performance in any group.

Results confirmed that MRM individuals perform better on the CNT than Mexicans residing in the United States and MARUS. Additionally, we found that several acculturation traits correlated with Mexican groups’ CNT performance. Our research indicates that while all Generation Z individuals of Mexican heritage feel strongly connected to their Latino identity regardless of where they live, MARUS feel less competent in Spanish and Latinx culture than MRM and Mexicans residing in the United States. Future work should further explore these differences for better insight into how acculturative factors influence lexical retrieval performance. Future work with bigger sample sizes can additionally examine CNT performance and acculturation in Generation Z first-generation and non-first-generation Mexicans (e.g., second-generation, third-generation) residing in the United States.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a promising potential intervention for Alzheimer's disease (AD) due to its influence on brain functions and mechanisms important in disease progression. Regions of interest include projection to the nucleus of the solitary tract, locus coeruleus, and hippocampus. Deterioration of the hippocampus is one of the most prominent early characteristics of AD, particularly during the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage. tVNS could modify function of the hippocampus. We examined resting state functional connectivity from the bilateral hippocampus in response to tVNS in patients with MCI.

Fifty older adults (28 women, 60-89 years of age) diagnosed with MCI were assessed. MCI was confirmed via diagnostic consensus conference with a neurologist and neuropsychologist (sources of information: Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test [MoCA], Clinical Dementia Rating scale [CDR], Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ), Hopkins Verbal Learning Test - Revised [HVLT-R] and medical record review). Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was collected on a 3T Siemens Prisma scanner while participants received either unilateral tVNS (left tragus, n = 25) or sham stimulation (left ear lobe, n = 25). fMRI data were processed using CONN toolbox v18b and hippocampal seed to voxel (whole brain) analyses were conducted with voxel and cluster level multiple comparison correction.

Contrasting tVNS and sham stimulation, whole-brain seed-to-voxel analysis demonstrated significant changes in connectivity from the left hippocampus to several cortical and subcortical regions bilaterally. Specifically, there was increased connectivity to prefrontal regions and cingulate gyri, and decreased connectivity to anterior and medial temporal lobes. A seed-to-voxel analysis from the right hippocampus indicated significant decrease in connectivity to a single cluster of regions in the left anterior temporal lobe in response to tVNS.

In conclusion, tVNS modified connectivity from the hippocampus to multiple brain regions implicated in semantic and salience functions, in which disruption correlates with deterioration in AD. These findings indicate afferent target engagement of tVNS. Future work is needed to investigate the long-term effects of tVNS in patients with MCI and whether it could contribute to meaningful cognitive change and subsequent improvements in quality of life.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are neurodevelopmental disorders with overlapping symptomatology and shared genetic makeup. Numerous previous studies have investigated ASD and ADHD using resting state functional networks. One functional network of particular interest is the Default Mode Network (DMN), as it has been shown to be abnormal in several mental disorders. Previous studies have investigated the DMN in ASD and ADHD separately but reported mixed trends of increased and decreased functional connectivity (FC) in the DMN in ASD and increased FC in ADHD. Additionally, little studies have investigated executive and attentional network dysfunction in the DMN for ASD and ADHD populations. To better understand the shared characteristics between ASD and ADHD, this study analyzed the DMN FC in children with ASD and ADHD.

Archival datasets from Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE)-I and ADHD-200 datasets were used, with 33 ADHD, 35 ASD, and 32 typically developing (TD) males (ages = 7-17 years). After applying a standard pre-processing pipeline, 11 regions of interest (ROIs) from the Dosenbach-160 atlas were examined with 55 ROI pairs generated for the 100 subjects.

Significant differences were noted between ASD-ADHD groups in attentional networks and executive functioning networks. Specifically, significant Group x VIQ interactions were noted for FC between the following pairs of regions: medial prefrontal cortex - ventromedial prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex -ventromedial prefrontal cortex, inferior temporal lobe - ventromedial prefrontal cortex, angular -ventromedial prefrontal cortex, angular -anterior cingulate cortex, inferior temporal lobe -ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, angular -superior frontal lobe, and intraparietal sulcus -superior frontal lobe. In the above FC pairs, FC in ADHD was negatively correlated with VIQ, with no correlation for ASD and positive correlation for TD. Previous literature has indicated that ADHD individuals demonstrate increased executive functioning deficits compared to ASD individuals. This study provides evidence at a neural level for these findings by demonstrating decreased FC trends in ADHD in attentional and executive functioning networks compared to ASD individuals. Group and VIQ main effects demonstrated mixed patterns across the three groups, as well as shared decreased FC in attention/executive networks for both ASD and ADHD groups.

In summary, this study found similar findings from previous studies regarding mixed connectivity patterns, as well as shared dysfunction between ASD and ADHD groups. These results help in solidifying the theory that ASD and ADHD share clinical and neural patterns which need to be examined further. Future directions include utilizing more ASD+ADHD comorbid individuals in studies comparing ASD and ADHD FC trends as well as seeking to further understand the neuropsychological and neuroimaging profiles in ASD and ADHD.

The current research framework recommends using biomarkers to further understand Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis, including other contributing factors like cerebrovascular disease. In longitudinal studies of people with neuropathological examination after death, baseline loneliness was associated with lower cognition, faster cognitive decline, and future AD risk, independent of AD pathology. Examination of memory impairment along with AD and cerebrovascular biomarkers, could aid risk reduction efforts earlier in the lifecourse and among populations with more exposure to loneliness. We hypothesized that loneliness is associated with amyloid, vascular, and neurodegeneration biomarkers; with worse memory; and that loneliness increases the susceptibility to biomarker-related memory impairment.

A subset of cognitively unimpaired older adults with available amyloid PET, vascular MRI (white matter hyperintensity volume, WMH), structural MRI (cortical thickness in AD signature regions), neuropsychological testing (memory factor score), dichotomized loneliness data (one item from CES-D), and relevant medical data were drawn from the community-based Washington Heights-Inwood Columbia Aging Project (WHICAP; n=169; covariates included age=81±6 years; 63% women; 49/31/20% Non-Hispanic Black/Non-Hispanic White/Hispanic; education=13±4 years; 32% APOE-e4 carriers). General linear models in the overall sample and stratified by race and ethnicity tested the association between loneliness and AD and cerebrovascular biomarkers, loneliness and memory, and the interaction of loneliness and biomarkers on memory, adjusting for covariates.

Loneliness was endorsed in 18% of participants, marginally associated with older age (2.1 [-0.2, 4.4], p=0.08), was more likely in those with untreated diabetes (13/0.1% lonely/not lonely, p=0.001), associated with lower cortical thickness (-0.05 [-0.09, -0.02], p=0.01), and associated with lower memory (0.3 [-0.6, -0.001], p=0.05). In Non-Hispanic White participants, loneliness was associated with greater WMH volume (0.5 [0.07, 0.82], p=0.03), while in Hispanic participants, loneliness was associated with lower cortical thickness (-0.16 [-0.24, -0.08], p=0.0006). In Non-Hispanic Black participants, loneliness was associated with lower memory (-13 [-26, -0.5], p=0.05), and the association between lower cortical thickness and lower memory was stronger in those that endorse loneliness (5 [0.2, 10], p=0.05). In Hispanic participants, loneliness was associated with higher memory (13 [4, 22], p=0.009), but the association between higher amyloid burden and lower memory was stronger in those that endorse loneliness (-12 [-20, -4], p=0.006); further, loneliness was marginally associated with lower memory (-0.7 [-1.4, 0.1], p=0.09), independently of WMH.

Associations between loneliness and biomarkers may relate to health seeking behavior, reported as treatment status for diabetes, for cerebrovascular burden and general neurodegeneration, but might be more complex for amyloid. The degree to which loneliness increased the susceptibility to amyloid and neurodegeneration-related, but not cerebrovascular-related, memory impairment, specifically, may suggest that domains beyond memory should be considered. Future work should be longitudinal to disentangle the effects of loneliness from related constructs like depression and anxiety, incorporate other AD biomarkers such as hyperphosphorylated tau, and incorporate biological mechanisms (e.g., stress, inflammation) into models of loneliness and AD pathogenesis. Older adults from all backgrounds may be more susceptible to loneliness, which was associated with lower memory; culturally-humble, social support-based interventions may reduce the risk of cognitive impairment.

Previous research has found that trauma is a risk factor for developing early-onset psychosis (EOP), both exhibiting widespread structural abnormalities and social cognitive dysfunction (Hoy et al., 2012; Nair et al., 2020; Rotiker et al., 2018). However, few studies have investigated the association between trauma, neural architecture, and social behaviors. The current study examines whether trauma exposure moderates the association between cortical volume and thickness and social cognition in EOP.

T1-weighted whole-brain magnetic resonance data were acquired on a 3T Siemens scanner for 23 adolescents with EOP aged 12-21 years (M = 16.12), and 20 age-matched controls (M = 17.22). Cortical volume and thickness were calculated using the Freesurfer software suite (v5.3; Reuter et al., 2012). Based on prior research, bilateral structures of interest included the rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC), insula, precuneus, and superior frontal cortex. Social measures included the WebCNP Emotion Recognition (KER40) and Emotion Differentiation Test (MED36) accuracy score (Gur et al., 2010), The Awareness of Social Inference Test Total Score (TASIT; McDonald et al., 2003), and Social Responsiveness Scale, 2nd Edition (SRS-2; Constantino & Gruber, 2012). Trauma exposure was assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview Diagnostic (controls n = 5; EOP n = 9; First et al., 2015). Pearson’s correlations and independent t-tests were used to examine the relationship between cortical measurements and social cognition. Additionally, PROCESS macro (Hayes, 2018) was used to examine if trauma history statistically moderated the relationship between cortical measurements and social cognition performance.

Significant group differences in SRS-2 scores were observed, as EOP participants scored 24.272 points higher than controls (t = 20.724, p < .001). Across both groups, there was a negative correlation between the SRS-2 score and precuneus volume (r = -.438, p = .011) and thickness (r = -.383, p = .028), TASIT total and superior frontal volume (r = -.349, p = .023), and KER40 and insular volume (r = -.437, p = .20). Further, the moderation analysis revealed that the relationships between precuneus volume and SRS-2 scores, precuneus thickness and MED36 scores, and rACC thickness and KER40 scores depended on experiencing trauma across both groups. Participants with trauma across groups had increased precuneus volume associated with higher SRS-2 scores (p = .0442). Experiencing trauma was also associated with lower precuneus cortical thickness and lower MED36 scores (p = .0172). Conversely, lack of trauma experience was associated with greater rACC thickness and higher KER40 scores (p = .0119).

Our findings indicate that past traumatic experiences may be a moderating factor in the relationship between atypical volume and thickness of social brain regions and social cognition. Overall, the significant interactions between trauma exposure and increased volume and thickness in both EOP and control participants were associated with increased impairment on social cognition measures. These findings emphasize the importance of accounting for the impact of early life adversities on brain development and how it may be relevant to social impairments, especially in individuals experiencing psychosis.

Rapid neurodevelopment occurs during adolescence, which may increase the developing brain’s susceptibility to environmental risk and resilience factors. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may confer additional risk to the developing brain, where ACEs have been linked with alterations in BOLD signaling in brain regions underlying inhibitory control. Potential resiliency factors, like a positive family environment, may attenuate the risk associated with ACEs, but limited research has examined potential buffers to adversity’s impact on the developing brain. The current study aimed to examine how ACEs relate to BOLD response during successful inhibition on the Stop Signal Task (SST) in regions underlying inhibitory control from late childhood to early adolescence and will assess whether aspects of the family environment moderate this relationship.

Participants (N= 9,080; Mage= 10.7, range= 9-13.8 years old; 48.5% female, 70.1% non-Hispanic White) were drawn from the larger Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study cohort. ACE risk scores were created (by EAS) using parent and child reports of youth’s exposure to adverse experiences collected at baseline to 2-year follow-up. For family environment, levels of family conflict were assessed based on youth reports on the Family Environment Scale at baseline and 2-year follow-up. The SST, a task-based fMRI paradigm, was used to measure inhibitory control (contrast: correct stop > correct go); the task was administered at baseline and 2-year follow-up. Participants were excluded if flagged for poor task performance. ROIs included left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, anterior insula, inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), and pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA). Separate linear mixed-effects models were conducted to assess the relationship between ACEs and BOLD signaling in ROIs while controlling for demographics (age, sex assigned at birth, race, ethnicity, household income, parental education), internalizing scores, and random effects of subject and MRI model.

Greater ACEs was associated with reduced BOLD response in the opercular region of the right IFG (b= -0.002, p= .02) and left (b= -0.002, p= .01) and right pre-SMA (b= -0.002, p= .01). Family conflict was related to altered activation patterns in the left pre-SMA, where youth with lower family conflict demonstrated a more robust negative relationship (b=.001, p= .04). ACEs were not a significant predictor in other ROIs, and the relationship between ACEs and BOLD response did not significantly differ across time. Follow-up brain-behavior correlations showed that in youth with lower ACEs, there was a negative correlation between increased activation in the pre-SMA and less impulsive behaviors.

Preadolescents with ACE history show blunted activation in regions underlying inhibitory control, which may increase the risk for future poorer inhibitory control with downstream implications for behavioral/health outcomes. Further, results demonstrate preliminary evidence for the family environment’s contributions to brain health. Future work is needed to examine other resiliency factors that may modulate the impact of ACE exposure during childhood and adolescence. Further, clinical scientists should continue to examine the relationship between ACEs and neural and behavioral correlates of inhibitory control across adolescent development, as risk-taking behaviors progress.

Adaptive decision-making is necessary to sustain functional independence. Maladaptive decisions are among the most prevalent features of psychological and neurological disorders. One crucial aspect of decision-making involves arbitrating between exploring new avenues with risky but potentially lucrative outcomes or exploiting prior knowledge and endorsing predictable outcomes. Balancing this dichotomy creates a behavioral tension that shapes all decisions and is termed the exploration-exploitation trade-off. This trade-off has been linked to reward and affective drives and associated neural circuitry as well as neuropsychological dysfunction. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the exploration-exploitation trade-off are still uncertain, due to the scarcity of literature and the heterogeneity of paradigms. This study aimed to systematically quantify and disambiguate neuroanatomical correlates of the exploration-exploitation tradeoff in a normative adult sample. These findings provide a necessary starting point for future investigations of this fundamental aspect of decision-making across clinical populations, with potential implications for assessment and intervention.

We used the effect-location method of meta-analysis to analyze data from 10 functional neuroimaging studies investigating the exploration-exploitation tradeoff in non-clinical samples. We analyzed the location and frequency of significant neural activations across studies for both explorative and exploitative decisions and characterized them as core and non-core regions. Core activations were defined as those reported in over 50% of studies. Secondary and tertiary activations were defined as those reported in 40% and 30% of studies, respectively. The present review was conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the 2009 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement.

The results revealed that explorative and exploitative choice behaviours differed markedly with respect to associated patterns of task-related brain activity. Exploration was associated with activity in brain regions implicated in externally directed, goal-based attentional processing and reward-related uncertainty, mainly tapping bilateral parietal and frontal circuitry, with relatively high consistency across studies. A core explorative network was revealed, consisting of activity in the frontal polar cortex, the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, the bilateral medial frontal gyrus, the bilateral precuneus, and the bilateral intraparietal sulcus. Secondary and tertiary regions were also detected, including the bilateral anterior insula, the left precentral gyrus, the bilateral superior frontal gyrus, the right inferior frontal gyrus, the left supplementary motor area, the bilateral superior parietal lobule, and the bilateral thalamus. Exploitation was associated with brain regions implicated in internally directed processes including reward valuation, motivation, and memory. Core exploitative activations included the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, the bilateral anterior cingulate cortex, and the bilateral orbitofrontal cortex. Secondary and tertiary activations included the bilateral hippocampus, the left middle temporal gyrus, the bilateral angular gyrus, the left posterior cingulate cortex, the left superior frontal gyrus, and the bilateral superior temporal gyrus.

The exploration-exploitation trade-off provides a novel paradigmatic approach to study adaptive and maladaptive decision-making behaviour in humans. Our findings support the neural dichotomization of exploration and exploitation and illuminate potential neural networks underlying this fundamental feature of decision-making. Understanding these mechanistic networks opens a new avenue of inquiry into decision-making deficits in clinical populations, including neurodegenerative, neurodevelopmental, and neuropsychiatric syndromes.
