Neveu's exchange formula relates the Palm probabilities with respect to two jointly stationary simple point processes. We give a new proof of the exchange formula by using a simple result from discrete time stationary stochastic processes.

There are some generalised semi-Markov processes (GSMP) which are insensitive, that is the value of some performance measures for the system depend only on the mean value of lifetimes and not on their actual distribution. In most cases this is not true and a performance measure can take on a number of values depending on the lifetime distributions. In this paper we present a method for finding tight bounds on the sensitivity of performance measures for the class of GSMPs with a single generally distributed lifetime. Using this method we can find upper and lower bounds for the value of a function of the stationary distribution as the distribution of the general lifetime ranges over a set of distributions with fixed mean. The method is applied to find bounds on the average queue length of the Engset queue and the time congestion in the GI/M/n/n queueing system.

In this paper we prove the validity of the Volterra integral equation for the evaluation of first-passage-time probability densities through varying boundaries, given by Buonocore et al. [1], for the case of diffusion processes not necessarily time-homogeneous. We study, specifically those processes that can be obtained from the Wiener process in the sense of [5]. A study of the kernel of the integral equation, in the same way as that by Buonocore et al. [1], is done. We obtain the boundaries for which closed-form solutions of the integral equation, without having to solve the equation, can be obtained. Finally, a few examples are given to indicate the actual use of our method.

A generalization of the familiar birth–death chain, called the geometric chain, is introduced and explored. By the introduction of two families of parameters in addition to the infinitesimal birth and death rates, the geometric chain allows transitions beyond the nearest neighbor, but is shown to retain the simple computational formulas of the birth–death chain for the stationary distribution and the expected first-passage times between states. It is also demonstrated that even when not reversible, a reversed geometric chain is again a geometric chain.

We introduce a stochastic process with discrete time and countable state space that is governed by a sequence of Markov matrices . Each Pm is used for a random number of steps Tm and is then replaced by Pm+1. Tm is a randomized stopping time that may depend on the most recent part of the state history. Thus the global character of the process is non-Markovian.

This process can be used to model the well-known simulated annealing optimization algorithm with randomized, partly state depending cooling schedules. Generalizing the concept of strong stationary times (Aldous and Diaconis [1]) we are able to show the existence of optimal schedules and to prove some desirable properties. This result is mainly of theoretical interest as the proofs do not yield an explicit algorithm to construct the optimal schedules.

We derive an ESTA property for marked point processes similar to Wolff's PASTA property for ordinary (non-marked) point processes, via a stochastic integral approach. This new ESTA property allows us to extend a known result on the conditional PASTA property and to derive an ASTA property for batch arrival processes. We also present an application of our results.

This paper is concerned with the distibutions and the moments of the area and the local time of a random walk, called the Bernoulli meander. The limit behavior of the distributions and the moments is determined in the case where the number of steps in the random walk tends to infinity. The results of this paper yield explicit formulas for the distributions and the moments of the area and the local time for the Brownian meander.

The present paper proposes a general approach for finding differential equations to evaluate probabilities of ruin in finite and infinite time. Attention is given to real-valued non-diffusion processes where a Markov structure is obtainable. Ruin is allowed to occur upon a jump or between the jumps. The key point is to define a process of conditional ruin probabilities and identify this process stopped at the time of ruin as a martingale. Using the theory of marked point processes together with the change-of-variable formula or the martingale representation theorem for point processes, we obtain differential equations for evaluating the probability of ruin.

Numerical illustrations are given by solving a partial differential equation numerically to obtain the probability of ruin over a finite time horizon.

Consider a homogeneous Poisson process in with density ρ, and add the origin as an extra point. Now connect any two points x and y of the process with probability g(x − y), independently of the point process and all other pairs, where g is a function which depends only on the Euclidean distance between x and y, and which is nonincreasing in the distance. We distinguish two critical densities in this model. The first is the infimum of all densities for which the cluster of the origin is infinite with positive probability, and the second is the infimum of all densities for which the expected size of the cluster of the origin is infinite. It is known that if , then the two critical densities are non-trivial, i.e. bounded away from 0 and ∞. It is also known that if g is of the form , for some r > 0, then the two critical densities coincide. In this paper we generalize this result and show that under the integrability condition mentioned above the two critical densities are always equal.

The study of exponential functionals of Brownian motion has recently attracted much attention, partly motivated by several problems in financial mathematics. Let be a linear Brownian motion starting from 0. Following Dufresne (1989), (1990), De Schepper and Goovaerts (1992) and De Schepper et al. (1992), we are interested in the process (for δ > 0), which stands for the discounted values of a continuous perpetuity payment. We characterize the upper class (in the sense of Paul Lévy) of X, as δ tends to zero, by an integral test. The law of the iterated logarithm is obtained as a straightforward consequence. The process exp(W(u))du is studied as well. The class of upper functions of Z is provided. An application to the lim inf behaviour of the winding clock of planar Brownian motion is presented.

Many applications of smoothed perturbation analysis lead to estimators with hazard rate functions of underlying distributions. A key assumption used in proving unbiasedness of the resulting estimator is that the hazard rate function be bounded, a restrictive assumption which excludes all distributions with finite support. Here, we prove through a simple example that this assumption can in fact be removed.

In the present paper we study the number of occurrences of non-overlapping success runs of length in a sequence of (not necessarily identical) Bernoulli trials arranged on a circle. An exact formula is given for the probability function, along with some sharp bounds which turn out to be very useful in establishing limiting (Poisson convergence) results. Certain applications to statistical run tests and reliability theory are also discussed.

In a coverage problem introduced by Dvoretzky (1956) the circle is covered with lengths The associated indexed martingale can be considered as a set of random densities with respect to Lebesgue measure, of which the limit is a random measure. The total masses of the set constitute a new martingale. From a theorem of Shepp (1972), this martingale does not converge in a space if . If 0 < α < 1 it converges in all spaces , and in this paper we demonstrate that it converges in all spaces Lp for p > 2. We also obtain quite precise estimates for the moments of the total mass of the limit measure, showing that the characteristic function of this total mass is an entire function of order 1/(1 − α). Thus in some sense the mass is distributed in a bounded domain.

The distribution of Brownian quantiles is determined, simplifying related integral expressions obtained by Lévy [9], [10] and more recently by Miura [11]. Three proofs are given, two of them involving last-passage times of Brownian motion, before time 1, at a given level.

Mecke's formula is concerned with a stationary random measure and shift-invariant measure on a locally compact Abelian group , and relates integrations concerning them to each other. For , we generalize this to a pair of random measures which are jointly stationary. The resulting formula extends the so-called Swiss Army formula, which was recently obtained as a generalization for Little's formula. The generalized Mecke formula, which is called GMF, can be also viewed as a generalization of the stationary version of H = λG. Under the stationary and ergodic assumptions, we apply it to derive many sample path formulas which have been known as extensions of H = λG. This will make clear what kinds of probabilistic conditions are sufficient to get them. We also mention a further generalization of Mecke's formula.

In this paper we continue the study of the classification problem for random walks in the quarter plane, with zero drifts in the interior of the domain. The necessary and sufficient conditions for these random walks to be ergodic were found earlier in [3]. Here we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for transience by constructing suitable Lyapounov functions.

In this paper we extend the class of zero-order threshold autoregressive models to a much richer class of mixture models. The new class has the important property of duality which, as we show, corresponds to time reversal. We are then able to obtain the time reversals of the zero-order threshold models and to characterise the time-reversible members of this subclass. These turn out to be quite trivial. The time-reversible models of the more general class do not suffer in this way. The complete stationary distributional structure is given, as are various moments, in particular the autocovariance function. This is shown to be of ARMA type. Finally we give two examples, the second of which extends from the finite to the countable mixture case. The general theory for this extension will be given elsewhere.

Let uε(t, x) be the position at time t of a point x on a string, where the time variable t varies in an interval I: = [0, T], T is a fixed positive time, and the space variable x varies in an interval J. The string is performing forced vibrations and also under the influence of small stochastic perturbations of intensity ε. We consider two kinds of random perturbations, one in the form of initial white noise, and the other is a nonlinear random forcing which involves the formal derivative of a Brownian sheet. When J has finite endpoints, a Dirichlet boundary condition is imposed for the solutions of the resulting non-linear wave equation. Assuming that the initial conditions are of sufficient regularity, we analyze the deviations uε(t, x) from u0(t, x), the unperturbed position function, as the intensity of perturbation ε ↓ 0 in the uniform topology. We also discuss some continuity properties of the realization of the solutions uε(t, x).

We extend large exceedence results for i.i.d. -valued random variables to a class of uniformly recurrent Markov-additive processes and stationary strong-mixing processes. As in the i.i.d. case, the results are proved via large deviations estimates.

In this paper we give a solution of an optimal stopping problem concerning random walks with non-zero drift, thereby proving the necessity of the existence of ESτ for Wald's equation ESτ = ES1 · Ετ to hold, even if attention is restricted to non-randomized stopping times τ. This answers a question of Robbins and Samuel (1966).
