We consider a class of operators that contains the strictly singular operators and it is contained in the perturbation class of the upper semi-Fredholm operators PΦ+. We show that this class is strictly contained in PΦ+, solving a question of Friedman. We obtain similar results for the strictly cosingular operators and the perturbation class of the lower semi-Fredholm operators PΦ−. We also characterize in terms of PΦ+ and in terms of PΦ−. As a consequence, we show that and are the biggest operator ideals contained in PΦ+ and PΦ−, respectively.

The main result of this paper is the following theorem. Let q be a prime and A be an elementary abelian group of order q3. Suppose that A acts as a coprime group of automorphisms on a profinite group G in such a manner that CG(a)′ is periodic for each a ∈ A#. Then G′ is locally finite.

For a finite group G, let F2(G) be the number of factorizations G = AB of the group G, where A and B are subgroups of G. We compute F2(G) for certain classes of groups, including cyclic groups ℤn, elementary abelian p-groups ℤpn, dihedral groups D2n, generalised quaternion groups Q4n, quasi-dihedral 2-groups QD2n(n≥4), modular p-groups Mpn, projective general linear groups PGL(2, pn) and projective special linear groups PSL(2, pn).

Let A = ρ2∑i,jAijθi ⊗ θj and B = ρ2∑i,jBij θi ⊗ θj be the Blaschke tensor and the Möbius second fundamental form of the immersion x. Let D = A + λB be the para-Blaschke tensor of x, where λ is a constant. If x: Mn ↦ Sn + 1(1) is an n-dimensional para-Blaschke isoparametric hypersurface in a unit sphere Sn + 1(1) and x has three distinct Blaschke eigenvalues one of which is simple or has three distinct Möbius principal curvatures one of which is simple, we obtain the full classification theorems of the hypersurface.

Let f be a non-zero cusp form with real Fourier coefficients a(n) (n ≥ 1) of positive real weight k and a unitary multiplier system v on a subgroup Γ ⊂ SL2(ℝ) that is finitely generated and of Fuchsian type of the first kind. Then, it is known that the sequence (a(n))(n ≥ 1) has infinitely many sign changes. In this short note, we generalise the above result to the case of entire modular integrals of non-positive integral weight k on the group Γ0*(N) (N ∈ ℕ) generated by the Hecke congruence subgroup Γ0(N) and the Fricke involution provided that the associated period functions are polynomials.

We define left and right kernels of representations of Hopf algebras. In the case of group algebras, left and right kernels coincide and they are the usual kernels of modules. In the general case, we show that these kernels coincide with the categorical left and right Hopf kernels of morphisms of Hopf algebras defined in Andruskiewitsch and Devoto [Extensions of Hopf algebras, Algebra i Analiz7 (1995), 22–69]. Brauer's theorem for kernels over group algebras is generalised to Hopf algebras.

We give some extensions of classical results of Kellogg and Warschawski to a class of quasiconformal (q.c.) mappings. Among the other results we prove that a q.c. mapping f, between two planar domains with smooth C1,α boundaries, together with its inverse mapping f−1, is C1,α up to the boundary if and only if the Beltrami coefficient μf is uniformly α Hölder continuous (0 < α < 1).

Recently, q-Dedekind-type sums related to q-zeta function and basic L-series are studied by Simsek in [13] (Y. Simsek, q-Dedekind type sums related to q-zeta function and basic L-series, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 318 (2006), 333–351) and Dedekind-type sums related to Euler numbers and polynomials are introduced in the previous paper [11] (T. Kim, Note on Dedekind type DC sums, Adv. Stud. Contem. Math. 18 (2009), 249–260). It is the purpose of this paper to construct a p-adic continuous function for an odd prime to contain a p-adic q-analogue of the higher order Dedekind the type sums related to q-Euler polynomials and numbers by using an invariant p-adic q-integrals.

We recall that a polynomial f(X) ∈ K[X] over a field K is called stable if all its iterates are irreducible over K. We show that almost all monic quadratic polynomials f(X) ∈ ℤ[X] are stable over ℚ. We also show that the presence of squares in so-called critical orbits of a quadratic polynomial f(X) ∈ ℤ[X] can be detected by a finite algorithm; this property is closely related to the stability of f(X). We also prove there are no stable quadratic polynomials over finite fields of characteristic 2 but they exist over some infinite fields of characteristic 2.

Dedekind domains, Artinian serial rings and right uniserial rings share the following property: Every cyclic right module is a direct sum of uniform modules. We first prove the following improvement of the well-known Osofsky-Smith theorem: A cyclic module with every cyclic subfactor a direct sum of extending modules has finite Goldie dimension. So, rings with the above-mentioned property are precisely rings of the title. Furthermore, a ring R is right q.f.d. (cyclics with finite Goldie dimension) if proper cyclic (≇ RR) right R-modules are direct sums of extending modules. R is right serial with all prime ideals maximal and ∩n ∈ ℕJn = Jm for some m ∈ ℕ if cyclic right R-modules are direct sums of quasi-injective modules. A right non-singular ring with the latter property is right Artinian. Thus, hereditary Artinian serial rings are precisely one-sided non-singular rings whose right and left cyclic modules are direct sums of quasi-injectives.

Let θ be a real number greater than 1, and let (()) be the fractional part function. Then, θ is said to be a Z-number if there is a non-zero real number λ such that ((λθn)) < for all n ∈ ℕ. Dubickas (A. Dubickas, Even and odd integral parts of powers of a real number, Glasg. Math. J., 48 (2006), 331–336) showed that strong Pisot numbers are Z-numbers. Here it is proved that θ is a strong Pisot number if and only if there exists λ ≠ 0 such that ((λα)) < for all. Also, the following characterisation of Pisot numbers among real numbers greater than 1 is shown: θ is a Pisot number ⇔ ∃ λ ≠ 0 such thatfor allan ∈ {0,1}, N ∈ ℕ}, where ‖λα‖ = min{((λα)), 1 − ((λα))}.

We prove that the inclusion of the space of gradient vector fields into the space of all vector fields on D2 non-vanishing in S1 is a homotopy equivalence.

Let G be a group such that, for any subgroup H of G, every automorphism of H can be extended to an automorphism of G. Such a group G is said to be of injective type. The finite abelian groups of injective type are precisely the quasi-injective groups. We prove that a finite non-abelian group G of injective type has even order. If, furthermore, G is also quasi-injective, then we prove that G = K × B, with B a quasi-injective abelian group of odd order and either K = Q8 (the quaternion group of order 8) or K = Dih(A), a dihedral group on a quasi-injective abelian group A of odd order coprime with the order of B. We give a description of the supersoluble finite groups of injective type whose Sylow 2-subgroup are abelian showing that these groups are, in general, not quasi-injective. In particular, the characterisation of such groups is reduced to that of finite 2-groups that are of injective type. We give several restrictions on the latter. We also show that the alternating group A5 is of injective type but that the binary icosahedral group SL(2, 5) is not.

We study properties of -free numbers, that is numbers that are not divisible by any member of a set . First we formulate the most-used procedure for finding them (in a given set of integers) as easy-to-apply propositions. Then we use the propositions to consider Diophantine properties of -free numbers and their distribution on almost all short intervals. Results on -free numbers have implications to non-vanishing Fourier coefficients of cusp forms, so this work also gives information about them.

In our previous paper [2], we derived an explicit representation of the integral ∫1∞t−θΔ(t)logjtdt by differentiation under the integral sign. Here, j is a fixed natural number, θ is a complex number with 1 < θ ≤ 5/4 and Δ(x) denotes the error term in the Dirichlet divisor problem. In this paper, we shall reconsider the same formula by an alternative approach, which appeals to only the elementary integral formulas concerning the Riemann zeta- and periodic Bernoulli functions. We also study the corresponding formula in the case of the circle problem of Gauss.

We show that [z, y]−1[z, x]−1[y, x]−1[z, y][z, x][y, x] = 1 is another defining law for the variety of 3-metabelian groups.

Let hK denote the class number of the imaginary quadratic field , where m and n are positive integers, k is an odd integer with k > 1 and 22m < kn. In this paper we prove that if either 3 ∣ n and 22m − kn ≡ 5(mod 8) or n = 3 and k = (22m+2 −1)/3, then ∣ hK. Otherwise, we have n ∣ hK.

We prove that a semigroup generated by finitely many truncated convolution operators on Lp[0, 1] with 1 ≤ p < ∞ is non-supercyclic. On the other hand, there is a truncated convolution operator, which possesses irregular vectors.

For the Kronecker algebra, Zwara found in [14] an example of a module whose orbit closure is neither unibranch nor Cohen-Macaulay. In this paper, we explain how to extend this example to all representation-infinite algebras with a preprojective component.

In this note, we study a new Finslerian quantity Ĉ defined by the Riemannian curvature. We prove that the new Finslerian quantity is a non-Riemannian quantity for a Finsler manifold with dimension n = 3. Then we study Finsler metrics of scalar curvature. We find that the Ĉ-curvature is closely related to the flag curvature and the H-curvature. We show that Ĉ-curvature gives, a measure of the failure of a Finsler metric to be of weakly isotropic flag curvature. We also give a simple proof of the Najafi-Shen-Tayebi' theorem.
