This paper draws connections between the double shuffle equations and structure of associators; Hain and Matsumoto’s universal mixed elliptic motives; and the Rankin–Selberg method for modular forms for $\text{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$. We write down explicit formulae for zeta elements $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{2n-1}$ (generators of the Tannaka Lie algebra of the category of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}$) in depths up to four, give applications to the Broadhurst–Kreimer conjecture, and solve the double shuffle equations for multiple zeta values in depths two and three.

We study the relationship between a $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}$-Souslin tree $T$ and its reduced powers $T^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}/{\mathcal{U}}$.

Previous works addressed this problem from the viewpoint of a single power $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$, whereas here, tools are developed for controlling different powers simultaneously. As a sample corollary, we obtain the consistency of an $\aleph _{6}$-Souslin tree $T$ and a sequence of uniform ultrafilters $\langle {\mathcal{U}}_{n}\mid n<6\rangle$ such that $T^{\aleph _{n}}/{\mathcal{U}}_{n}$ is $\aleph _{6}$-Aronszajn if and only if $n<6$ is not a prime number.

This paper is the first application of the microscopic approach to Souslin-tree construction, recently introduced by the authors. A major component here is devising a method for constructing trees with a prescribed combination of freeness degree and ascent-path characteristics.

We consider the spectral behavior and noncommutative geometry of commutators $[P,f]$, where $P$ is an operator of order 0 with geometric origin and $f$ a multiplication operator by a function. When $f$ is Hölder continuous, the spectral asymptotics is governed by singularities. We study precise spectral asymptotics through the computation of Dixmier traces; such computations have only been considered in less singular settings. Even though a Weyl law fails for these operators, and no pseudodifferential calculus is available, variations of Connes’ residue trace theorem and related integral formulas continue to hold. On the circle, a large class of nonmeasurable Hankel operators is obtained from Hölder continuous functions $f$, displaying a wide range of nonclassical spectral asymptotics beyond the Weyl law. The results extend from Riemannian manifolds to contact manifolds and noncommutative tori.

This paper presents a framework for compressed sensing that bridges a gap between existing theory and the current use of compressed sensing in many real-world applications. In doing so, it also introduces a new sampling method that yields substantially improved recovery over existing techniques. In many applications of compressed sensing, including medical imaging, the standard principles of incoherence and sparsity are lacking. Whilst compressed sensing is often used successfully in such applications, it is done largely without mathematical explanation. The framework introduced in this paper provides such a justification. It does so by replacing these standard principles with three more general concepts: asymptotic sparsity, asymptotic incoherence and multilevel random subsampling. Moreover, not only does this work provide such a theoretical justification, it explains several key phenomena witnessed in practice. In particular, and unlike the standard theory, this work demonstrates the dependence of optimal sampling strategies on both the incoherence structure of the sampling operator and on the structure of the signal to be recovered. Another key consequence of this framework is the introduction of a new structured sampling method that exploits these phenomena to achieve significant improvements over current state-of-the-art techniques.

We study a natural generalization of the noncrossing relation between pairs of elements in $[n]$ to $k$-tuples in $[n]$ that was first considered by Petersen et al. [J. Algebra324(5) (2010), 951–969]. We give an alternative approach to their result that the flag simplicial complex on $\binom{[n]}{k}$ induced by this relation is a regular, unimodular and flag triangulation of the order polytope of the poset given by the product $[k]\times [n-k]$ of two chains (also called Gelfand–Tsetlin polytope), and that it is the join of a simplex and a sphere (that is, it is a Gorenstein triangulation). We then observe that this already implies the existence of a flag simplicial polytope generalizing the dual associahedron, whose Stanley–Reisner ideal is an initial ideal of the Grassmann–Plücker ideal, while previous constructions of such a polytope did not guarantee flagness nor reduced to the dual associahedron for $k=2$. On our way we provide general results about order polytopes and their triangulations. We call the simplicial complex the noncrossing complex, and the polytope derived from it the dual Grassmann associahedron. We extend results of Petersen et al. [J. Algebra324(5) (2010), 951–969] showing that the noncrossing complex and the Grassmann associahedron naturally reflect the relations between Grassmannians with different parameters, in particular the isomorphism$G_{k,n}\cong G_{n-k,n}$. Moreover, our approach allows us to show that the adjacency graph of the noncrossing complex admits a natural acyclic orientation that allows us to define a Grassmann–Tamari order on maximal noncrossing families. Finally, we look at the precise relation of the noncrossing complex and the weak separability complex of Leclerc and Zelevinsky [Amer. Math. Soc. Transl.181(2) (1998), 85–108]; see also Scott [J. Algebra290(1) (2005), 204–220] among others. We show that the weak separability complex is not only a subcomplex of the noncrossing complex as noted by Petersen et al. [J. Algebra324(5) (2010), 951–969] but actually its cyclically invariant part.

Let $X$ be a compact 4-manifold with boundary. We study the space of hyperkähler triples $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{1},\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{2},\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{3}$ on $X$, modulo diffeomorphisms which are the identity on the boundary. We prove that this moduli space is a smooth infinite-dimensional manifold and describe the tangent space in terms of triples of closed anti-self-dual 2-forms. We also explore the corresponding boundary value problem: a hyperkähler triple restricts to a closed framing of the bundle of 2-forms on the boundary; we identify the infinitesimal deformations of this closed framing that can be filled in to hyperkähler deformations of the original triple. Finally we study explicit examples coming from gravitational instantons with isometric actions of $\text{SU}(2)$.

In Angulo-Ardoy et al. [Anal. PDE, 9(3) (2016), 575–596], we found some necessary conditions for a Riemannian manifold to admit a local limiting Carleman weight (LCW), based on the Cotton–York tensor in dimension 3 and the Weyl tensor in dimension 4. In this paper, we find further necessary conditions for the existence of local LCWs that are often sufficient. For a manifold of dimension 3 or 4, we classify the possible Cotton–York, or Weyl tensors, and provide a mechanism to find out whether the manifold admits local LCW for each type of tensor. In particular, we show that a product of two surfaces admits an LCW if and only if at least one of the two surfaces is of revolution. This provides an example of a manifold satisfying the eigenflag condition of Angulo-Ardoy et al. [Anal. PDE, 9(3) (2016), 575–596] but not admitting LCW.

We provide a quantum algorithm for simulating the dynamics of sparse Hamiltonians with complexity sublogarithmic in the inverse error, an exponential improvement over previous methods. Specifically, we show that a $d$-sparse Hamiltonian $H$ acting on $n$ qubits can be simulated for time $t$ with precision $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}$ using $O(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}(\log (\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D716})/\log \log (\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D716})))$ queries and $O(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}(\log ^{2}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D716})/\log \log (\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}))n)$ additional 2-qubit gates, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}=d^{2}\Vert H\Vert _{\max }t$. Unlike previous approaches based on product formulas, the query complexity is independent of the number of qubits acted on, and for time-varying Hamiltonians, the gate complexity is logarithmic in the norm of the derivative of the Hamiltonian. Our algorithm is based on a significantly improved simulation of the continuous- and fractional-query models using discrete quantum queries, showing that the former models are not much more powerful than the discrete model even for very small error. We also simplify the analysis of this conversion, avoiding the need for a complex fault-correction procedure. Our simplification relies on a new form of ‘oblivious amplitude amplification’ that can be applied even though the reflection about the input state is unavailable. Finally, we prove new lower bounds showing that our algorithms are optimal as a function of the error.

The jaggedness of an order ideal $I$ in a poset $P$ is the number of maximal elements in $I$ plus the number of minimal elements of $P$ not in $I$. A probability distribution on the set of order ideals of $P$ is toggle-symmetric if for every $p\in P$, the probability that $p$ is maximal in $I$ equals the probability that $p$ is minimal not in $I$. In this paper, we prove a formula for the expected jaggedness of an order ideal of $P$ under any toggle-symmetric probability distribution when $P$ is the poset of boxes in a skew Young diagram. Our result extends the main combinatorial theorem of Chan–López–Pflueger–Teixidor [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., forthcoming. 2015, arXiv:1506.00516], who used an expected jaggedness computation as a key ingredient to prove an algebro-geometric formula; and it has applications to homomesies, in the sense of Propp–Roby, of the antichain cardinality statistic for order ideals in partially ordered sets.

A permutoid is a set of partial permutations that contains the identity and is such that partial compositions, when defined, have at most one extension in the set. In 2004 Peter Cameron conjectured that there can exist no algorithm that determines whether or not a permutoid based on a finite set can be completed to a finite permutation group. In this note we prove Cameron’s conjecture by relating it to our recent work on the profinite triviality problem for finitely presented groups. We also prove that the existence problem for finite developments of rigid pseudogroups is unsolvable. In an appendix, Steinberg recasts these results in terms of inverse semigroups.

Let $G$ be a totally disconnected, locally compact group. A closed subgroup of $G$ is locally normal if its normalizer is open in $G$. We begin an investigation of the structure of the family of closed locally normal subgroups of $G$. Modulo commensurability, this family forms a modular lattice ${\mathcal{L}}{\mathcal{N}}(G)$, called the structure lattice of $G$. We show that $G$ admits a canonical maximal quotient $H$ for which the quasicentre and the abelian locally normal subgroups are trivial. In this situation ${\mathcal{L}}{\mathcal{N}}(H)$ has a canonical subset called the centralizer lattice, forming a Boolean algebra whose elements correspond to centralizers of locally normal subgroups. If $H$ is second-countable and acts faithfully on its centralizer lattice, we show that the topology of $H$ is determined by its algebraic structure (and thus invariant by every abstract group automorphism), and also that the action on the Stone space of the centralizer lattice is universal for a class of actions on profinite spaces. Most of the material is developed in the more general framework of Hecke pairs.

We use the structure lattice, introduced in Part I, to undertake a systematic study of the class $\mathscr{S}$ consisting of compactly generated, topologically simple, totally disconnected locally compact groups that are nondiscrete. Given $G\in \mathscr{S}$, we show that compact open subgroups of $G$ involve finitely many isomorphism types of composition factors, and do not have any soluble normal subgroup other than the trivial one. By results of Part I, this implies that the centralizer lattice and local decomposition lattice of $G$ are Boolean algebras. We show that the $G$-action on the Stone space of those Boolean algebras is minimal, strongly proximal, and microsupported. Building upon those results, we obtain partial answers to the following key problems: Are all groups in $\mathscr{S}$ abstractly simple? Can a group in $\mathscr{S}$ be amenable? Can a group in $\mathscr{S}$ be such that the contraction groups of all of its elements are trivial?

Deninger et Werner ont développé un analogue pour les courbes $p$-adiques de la correspondance classique de Narasimhan et Seshadri entre les fibrés vectoriels stables de degré $0$ et les représentations unitaires du groupe fondamental topologique pour une courbe complexe propre et lisse. Par transport parallèle, ils ont associé fonctoriellement à chaque fibré vectoriel sur une courbe $p$-adique, dont la réduction est fortement semi-stable de degré $0$, une représentation $p$-adique du groupe fondamental de la courbe. Ils se sont posé quelques questions : leur foncteur est-il pleinement fidèle ? La cohomologie des systèmes locaux fournis par celui-ci admet-elle une filtration de Hodge-Tate ? Leur construction est-elle compatible avec la correspondance de Simpson $p$-adique développée par Faltings ? Nous répondons à ces questions dans cet article.

In this article the $p$-essential dimension of generic symbols over fields of characteristic $p$ is studied. In particular, the $p$-essential dimension of the length $\ell$ generic $p$-symbol of degree $n+1$ is bounded below by $n+\ell$ when the base field is algebraically closed of characteristic $p$. The proof uses new techniques for working with residues in Milne–Kato $p$-cohomology and builds on work of Babic and Chernousov in the Witt group in characteristic 2. Two corollaries on $p$-symbol algebras (i.e, degree 2 symbols) result from this work. The generic $p$-symbol algebra of length $\ell$ is shown to have $p$-essential dimension equal to $\ell +1$ as a $p$-torsion Brauer class. The second is a lower bound of $\ell +1$ on the $p$-essential dimension of the functor $\operatorname{Alg}_{p^{\ell },p}$. Roughly speaking this says that you will need at least $\ell +1$ independent parameters to be able to specify any given algebra of degree $p^{\ell }$ and exponent $p$ over a field of characteristic $p$ and improves on the previously established lower bound of 3.

A collection of $k$ sets is said to form a $k$-sunflower, or $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}$-system, if the intersection of any two sets from the collection is the same, and we call a family of sets ${\mathcal{F}}$sunflower-free if it contains no $3$-sunflowers. Following the recent breakthrough of Ellenberg and Gijswijt (‘On large subsets of $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n}$ with no three-term arithmetic progression’, Ann. of Math. (2) 185 (2017), 339–343); (‘Progression-free sets in $\mathbb{Z}_{4}^{n}$ are exponentially small’, Ann. of Math. (2) 185 (2017), 331–337) we apply the polynomial method directly to Erdős–Szemerédi sunflower problem (Erdős and Szemerédi, ‘Combinatorial properties of systems of sets’, J. Combin. In this paper we prove a short time asymptotic expansion of a hypoelliptic heat kernel on a Euclidean space and a compact manifold. We study the ‘cut locus’ case, namely, the case where energy-minimizing paths which join the two points under consideration form not a finite set, but a compact manifold. Under mild assumptions we obtain an asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel up to any order. Our approach is probabilistic and the heat kernel is regarded as the density of the law of a hypoelliptic diffusion process, which is realized as a unique solution of the corresponding stochastic differential equation. Our main tools are S. Watanabe’s distributional Malliavin calculus and T. Lyons’ rough path theory.

In this article we show that the quotient ${\mathcal{M}}_{\infty }/B(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ of the Lubin–Tate space at infinite level ${\mathcal{M}}_{\infty }$ by the Borel subgroup of upper triangular matrices $B(\mathbb{Q}_{p})\subset \operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ exists as a perfectoid space. As an application we show that Scholze’s functor $H_{\acute{\text{e}}\text{t}}^{i}(\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}_{p}}^{1},{\mathcal{F}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}})$ is concentrated in degree one whenever $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ is an irreducible principal series representation or a twist of the Steinberg representation of $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$.

We introduce a concept of minimality for Fano polygons. We show that, up to mutation, there are only finitely many Fano polygons with given singularity content, and give an algorithm to determine representatives for all mutation-equivalence classes of such polygons. This is a key step in a program to classify orbifold del Pezzo surfaces using mirror symmetry. As an application, we classify all Fano polygons such that the corresponding toric surface is qG-deformation-equivalent to either (i) a smooth surface; or (ii) a surface with only singularities of type $1/3(1,1)$.

We revisit regularity of SLE trace, for all $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}\neq 8$, and establish Besov regularity under the usual half-space capacity parametrization. With an embedding theorem of Garsia–Rodemich–Rumsey type, we obtain finite moments (and hence almost surely) optimal variation regularity with index $\min (1+\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}/8,2)$, improving on previous works of Werness, and also (optimal) Hölder regularity à la Johansson Viklund and Lawler.

We prove a version of Clifford’s theorem for metrized complexes. Namely, a metrized complex that carries a divisor of degree $2r$ and rank $r$ (for $0<r<g-1$) also carries a divisor of degree 2 and rank 1. We provide a structure theorem for hyperelliptic metrized complexes, and use it to classify divisors of degree bounded by the genus. We discuss a tropical version of Martens’ theorem for metric graphs.
