In the present paper, we introduce a natural extension of Adler, Konheim and MacAndrew topological entropy for proper maps of locally compact separable metrizable spaces and prove a variational principle which states that this topological entropy, the supremum of the Kolmogorov–Sinai entropies and the minimum of the Bowen entropies always coincide. We apply this variational principle to show that the topological entropy of automorphisms of simply connected nilpotent Lie groups always vanishes. This shows that the Bowen formula for the Bowen entropy of an automorphism of a non-compact Lie group with respect to some invariant metric is just an upper bound for its topological entropy.

We produce arbitrarily large equivalence classes of matings with the aeroplane polynomial. These are obtained via a slight generalization of the technique of proof of a similar result for Wittner captures.

We provide a description of the enveloping semigroup of the affine unipotent transformation T:X→X of the form T(x)=Ax+α, where A is a lower triangular unipotent matrix, α is a constant vector, and X is a finite-dimensional torus. In particular, we show that in this case the enveloping semigroup is a nilpotent group whose nilpotency class is at most the dimension of the underlying torus.

We present sufficient conditions for Anosov-type maps on Lie groups or Riemannian manifolds to have fixed points.

Many dynamical systems can be naturally represented as Bratteli–Vershik (or adic) systems, which provide an appealing combinatorial description of their dynamics. If an adic system X is linearly recurrent, then we show how to represent X using a two-dimensional subshift of finite type Y; each ‘row’ in a Y-admissible configuration corresponds to an infinite path in the Bratteli diagram of X, and the vertical shift on Y corresponds to the ‘successor’ map of X. Any Y-admissible configuration can then be recoded as the space-time diagram of a one-dimensional cellular automaton Φ; in this way X is embedded in Φ (i.e. X is conjugate to a subsystem of Φ). With this technique, we can embed many odometers, Toeplitz systems, and constant-length substitution systems in one-dimensional cellular automata.

Considering the Potts model on diamond-like hierarchical lattices, in this paper, we show that the Julia sets of the singularities of the free energy may be a Feigenbaum Julia set. Furthermore, we prove that these Julia sets are locally connected if they are connected.
