Low-angle X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurements of soil samples, made at controlled relative humidities, showed the presence of major reflections at 20–33, 10–27, and 7–8 Å. The first reflection, which increased in intensity but did not shift in spacing with decreasing relative humidity, represents curved smectite layers. This spacing was also observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The value of 10–27 Å for the second reflection, the 001 reflection of smetite, is unusually high, probably due to poorly stacked, irregularly curved layers. The 7–8-Å reflection originates from kaolinite or dehydrated halloysite, which also contain curved layers. The more curved the layer structure of the smectite, the more difficult it is to detect this phase; therefore the XRD relative peak heights are not directly proportional to the percentages of the smectite.

As part of the characterization of a Tunisian red soil profile, six samples, taken at different depths, were investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature and at 80 K to obtain information about the various types of Fe oxides present. By considering magnetic hyperfine field distributions, the spectra of goethite and hematite were well resolved. Chemical analyses of the samples revealed a partial substitution of Fe by Al and Mn. The spectral behavior of the goethite was predominantly influenced by crystallinity and amount of Al substitution which resulted in a reduction of the magnetic hyperfine field. The effect of Mn substitution was much more pronounced in the hematite spectrum as a consequence of a stronger suppression of the Morin transition by Mn than by Al.

Burial diagenetic reactions of di- and trioctahedral clay minerals were compared in Brazilian offshore, basinal sediment sequences of Cretaceous age. Originally dioctahedral smectite-rich shales of three basins—Potiguar,Ceara, and Ilha de Santana—exhibited the classical smectite-to-illite burial pattern. Trioctahedral clay-rich shales and trioctahedral clay-mineral cements in sandstones, however, showed a burial sequence of saponite to mixed-layer chlorite/saponite with progressive increase in the percentage of chlorite layers with increasing burial depth.

The change from disordered to ordered interstratifications of chlorite/saponite occurred in the temperature range 60°-70°C at a vitrinite reflectance value of about 0.65. These values are lower than those found for the ordering of illite/smectite clays. Increasing substitution of Al for Si in tetrahedral sites, followed by fixation of interlayer hydroxide sheets was found to be the major chemical change promoting transformation of saponite to chlorite via corrensite.

The effect of heating on montmorillonites containing exchangeable Na and K has been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface composition of the unheated montmorillonite was consistent with the bulk composition, but after the sample recrystallized at 1100°C, the surface abundance of Na increased, whereas that of K decreased. Because Na and K were not present in the high-temperature crystalline products, this behavior suggests that a noncrystalline material separated from the crystalline products. The Na 1s binding energy and KL23L23 Auger kinetic energy of montmorillonite were comparable with those of Na in typically ionic compound, such as NaCl. These electron energies became smaller and larger, respectively, on heating and approached those of feldspar (albite). The K 2p3/2 binding energy of montmorillonite increased slightly on heating. The K 2p3/2 binding energy of heated sample of montmorillonite was also comparable with that of feldspar (orthoclase). These results suggest that Na and K were incorporated into feldspar-like noncrystalline materials.

Alternating mica-like and smectite-like layers of rectorite give rise to periodically varying contrast in 10-Å lattice fringes, yielding a periodicity of 20 Å in a transmission electron microscopic study. Expansion of rectorite using dodecylamine hydrochloride yields a three-layer repeat of thickness 32–35 Å, consisting of a basic 20-Å unit, identical to that in images of collapsed, dehydrated rectorite, and a 12-15-Å thick, intercalated organic layer.

Thin packets of layers derived by grinding the sample are only 20 Å thick, or multiples thereof. Serrated edges of rectorite grains likewise have steps 20 Å in height, implying that mechanical cleavage occurs readily along the weakly bonded, smectite-like interlayers. The “fundamental” 20-Å unit is proposed to be compositionally centered on an interlayer bounded by two identical T-O-T layers, each of which has compositionally different tetrahedral sheets. Such structural considerations suggest that resultant 20-Å units (“rectorite units”) are unique in structure and chemistry relative to true illite. These results further imply that grinding and other treatment of coherent crystals of clay minerals may produce individual unit layers. Moreover, when coupled with size-separation, such treatment may yield X-ray powder diffraction data that reflect reconstituted layer sequences.

The clay and bulk mineralogy of soil and till from 26 Adirondack watersheds was studied. The materials consist typically of quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, mica, vermiculite, and kaolinite. Talc, smectite, halloysite, and hornblende are present in some samples. The clay fraction of the soils is composed predominantly of vermiculite, likely derived from the transformation of a mica precursor, and kaolinite. The soil vermiculite commonly contains hydroxy-Al interlayers which are especially prevalent in the B-horizon samples. Despite significant variation in the type of bedrock and the composition of heavy mineral assemblages in these watersheds, the clay mineralogy is remarkably uniform. This finding supports earlier suggestions that the occurrence of vermiculite in soils is more dependent on climate than on the nature of the parent material.

Treatment of smectite with laurylamine hydrochloride was verified to cause expansion of d(001) which may be retained and observed in ion-milled samples by transmission electron microscopy. The spacings between layers as observed in lattice fringe images, however, are variable and may be as small as 10 Å. The method therefore produces ambiguities in differentiating between some smectites and illites, similar to those that have been found for untreated samples; e.g., on this basis, expanded layers may be inferred to be smectite, but layers with d-values approaching 10 Å may be either illite or smectite. Expansion also destroys the original rock texture, which, therefore, must be observed using only untreated samples.

The dehydration temperature of K-montmorillonite, obtained by ion exchange of a Na-mont-morillonite, was determined at pressures to 2 kbar, using high-pressure differential thermal analysis. Dehydration reactions were found at about 50° and 100°C above the liquid-vapor curve of water. At pressures above the critical point of water the dehydration temperatures increased only slightly. The temperature of the first dehydration reaction is 10°C higher than for Na-montmorillonite, indicating a slightly greater stability of the hydration shell around the potassium interlayer cation. The second dehydration reaction occurs at a slightly lower temperature. The data were used to determine the enthalpy of the dehydration ΔH(dh) and the bonding enthalpy of the interlayer water ΔH(iw) at 1 atm. The first dehydration reaction of the K-exchanged montmorillonite has a ΔH(dh) = 46.16 ± 0.06 kJ/mole and a ΔH(iw) = 7.8 ± 0.5 kJ/mole, whereas for the second reaction, ΔH(dh) = 56.7 ± 2 kJ/mole and ΔH(iw) = 19.8 ± 2 kJ/mole. These values compare with a ΔH(dh) = 46.8 ± 0.3 kJ/mole and a ΔH(iw) = 7.8 ± 0.5 kJ/mole for the first dehydration reaction of the Na-montmorillonite and a ΔH(dh) = 62.9 ± 2 kJ/mole and ΔH(iw) = 27.1 ± 2 kJ/mole for the second dehydration.

Batch cation-exchange experiments were performed on chlorite, using synthetic ground water containing cesium in the concentration range 10−9–10−3 M. The sorption behavior was complex; with increasing Cs concentration, the distribution ratio of Cs decreased at first, but passed through a pronounced maximum at high Cs loadings. The desorption data differed from the sorption data only by a shift towards larger distribution ratios in the region of the maximum. The distribution ratios for isotope exchange were even larger, but varied less with Cs loadings. Similar results were obtained for KCl-treated chlorite; however, grinding or acid-treatment of the chlorite considerably altered its behavior, the absence of the maximum being the most striking change. Most of the effects at higher Cs loadings can be explained by postulating structural changes induced by the sorption of Cs.

The reactions of simple conjugated dienes over divalent and trivalent transition metal-exchanged montmorillonites yield, in the absence of nucleophiles, a variety of products. Some of these products are a result of Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions, whereas others are indicative of carbocation intermediates, i.e., other dimers, oligomers, and isomerization products of these intermediates. The reactions in sealed cells between 20° and 150°C show trends in the yields of the various product groups. Dimers of butadiene and isoprene formed by cycloaddition (i.e., 4-vinylcyclohexene and the monoterpene p-menthadiene (limonene)) were formed at low temperatures (20–50°C). As the temperature was raised, the total yield of dimers increased and higher oligomers were formed along with isomerization products of the dimers and oligomers. The products of cycloaddition, however, did not increase markedly. The type of solvent used for the reaction was found to influence the reactivity, e.g., the use of 1,4-dioxan rather than chloroform led to a reduction in total conversion and also to a markedly higher degree of selectivity. In the presence of a suitable nucleophile (methanol), both dienes gave the 1,4-addition product predominantly, which suggests that an allylic carbocation intermediate was involved. The use of an interlayer-supported nickel complex, [HNi(P(OEt)3)4]+, produced the only large scale polymerization observed in this work.

The morphology of illite/smectite (I/S) from deeply buried bentonites and hydrothermally altered Tertiary volcanic rocks from Japan changes in parallel with the proportion of expandable layers in the I/S. As viewed by scanning electron microscopy, the morphologies range from the typical “cornflake,” “maple leaf,” or “honeycomb” habit of smectite to the typical platy or scalloped (with curled points) habit of illite. Although the changes are more subtle near either end member, at a composition of 60-70% illite layers, the morphology changes from sponge-like or cellular to platy or ribbon-like. The change of morphology at this composition correlates with a change in layer stacking from turbostratic to rotational ordering of the 1Md type. Turbostratic stacking can be thought of as randomly distributed translations of successive layers by any magnitude and in any direction. The rotationally ordered structure, which allows nearly precise juxtaposition of quasihexagonal oxygen surfaces from adjacent layers, probably permits more crystalline regularity in the a-b plane, which promotes a more plate-like or sheet-like habit.

In Upper Cretaceous-Tertiary marine shales (Campos Formation) from the Campos basin, Brazil, mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) has remained randomly interstratified to depths of 3500 m and to temperatures as high as 100°C, in contrast to the typical pattern of shale diagenesis in, for example, the Gulf Coast area. X-ray powder diffraction analysis of the bulk shale and several size fractions from samples from one well in the Brazilian basin and from one in the Gulf Coast region were carried out to assess the factors that might have controlled the lack of illitization in the Campos Formation shales.

In samples from the Gulf Coast well, the clay minerals are I/S (montmorillonite-type), discrete illite, chlorite, and minor kaolinite. In contrast, the clay minerals in samples from the Campos basin well are kaolinite, clay-size biotite, and I/S (nontronite-type). Kaolinite is abundant in this well, and the variation of its abundance with depth seems to reflect variations in sea-level stands. The original composition of the I/S (nontronite-type) was probably the main factor controlling the lack of illitization in the shales of the Campos Formation.

In vitro studies of the destruction (lysis) of bovine red blood cells (erythrocytes) by some silicate minerals showed the reaction to be complete in less than 1 hr and very destructive to the cell membrane. The activity as lysing agents was found to be in the order smectites > silica > palygorskite ≃ sepiolite > chrysotile > kaolinite. Different compositions (Fe, Al, Mg, Li, vacancy) of the octahedral sheet of the smectite and fibrous clay minerals did not appreciably alter their hemolytic activity. The most active particle size range for kaolinite and montmorillonite was 0.2-2 μm. Structural folding of palygorskite reduced lysis suggesting that edge surfaces and silanol groups are important in this process. Aluminum oxides and hydroxides caused no lysis, and coatings of positively charged aluminum-hydroxy polymers on montmorillonite, silica, palygorskite, and kaolinite significantly reduced lysis.

Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) examination has shown that multi-domainic crystals of synthetic goethite consist of almost parallel intergrowths, each of which is slightly misoriented with respect to its neighbors. These intergrowths emanate from a central nucleus within the crystal. They can nucleate along both the x and y crystal axes, but subsequent growth is mainly in the z direction.

The formation of multi-domainic goethites from ferrihydrite was favored by high pH (≥ 13) and, at lower pHs, by the addition of NaNO3 to the system. Decreasing the temperature of synthesis from 70° to 20°C also enhanced domain formation. The nucléation of domains was confined to the initial stage of goethite formation. Domains probably formed when crystal growth was very rapid or when adsorbed species blocked the appropriate sites on the nucleus material.

X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) studies of the clay fraction of Upper Cretaceous mudstones from a shallow (2.5 km) drill hole in the Niger delta indicate a high geothermal gradient (about 100°C/km) during diagenesis. The mineralogy of the clays is similar to that observed elsewhere and consists of interstratified illite/smectite (I/S), kaolinite, and chlorite. Detrital mica and K-feldspar are also present throughout the section. The composition-depth relationship of the I/S is different from that observed in deeply buried Gulf Coast shales. The Niger delta rocks show a linear change in composition of the I/S as a function of depth in the drill hole from 60 to 10% smectite layers. The I/S ordering is R=0 in shallower samples and progresses to R=1 in deeper samples. The I/S in the deepest samples has R=3 ordering. No R=1 I/S showing a first-order 27-Å XRD reflection was found. The Niger delta sequence differs from the Gulf Coast sequence b. (1) a lack of R=1 I/S showing a 27-Å XRD reflection (which are common in Gulf Coast samples and contain 20% smectite layers), an. (2) the existence of a simple, continuous linear relation between the composition of the R=1 and R=0 I/S and depth.

A comparison of composition-temperature curves for I/S formed under different diagenetic regimes shows different types of I/S ordering in which the presence of R=1 I/S showing a 27-Å reflection and R=3 I/S types changes the composition-depth (and thus, composition-temperature) relations. These changes suggest a difference in the energy necessary to form the various ordering types. Also, geothermal gradient during burial appears to be responsible for different composition-temperature gradients found for the same type of I/S ordering.

Na-saturated bimessite was synthesized by oxidizing an alkaline MnCl2 solution with gaseous O2. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed no morphological change upon K-saturation of the bimessite, but selected-area diffraction (SAD) revealed structural disorder. Stepwise heating of the K-birnessite to 800°C yielded cryptomelane, as indicated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Various degrees of transformation to the final cryptomelane product were observed by TEM and SAD, but not by XRD. Unaltered bimessite formed chiefly as thin, platy crystals of apparent hexagonal outline. The cryptomelane crystals that formed by heating the K-saturated bimessite were acicular. Bimessite crystals, partially transformed to cryptomelane and displaying non-integral diffraction spots, formed plates having linear striations and rods twinned at 60° to each other. These intermediate products commonly retained some of the original hexagonal appearance of the parent bimessite. Structural disorder was detected in the partially transformed crystals by SAD. TEM revealed 6.8- and 4.8-Å spacings of the (110) and (200) planes of cryptomelane, respectively. The basal planes of bimessite layers (001) appeared to correspond topotactically to the (110) plane of cryptomelane during these transformations.

Kaolin floc structures of commercial utility are produced by adsorption of hexamethylenediamine. These flocs are largely face-to-face structures with small diameter platelets of colloidal kaolinite aggregated on larger platelets of kaolinite and muscovite. Because of its higher charge density, muscovite is more effective than kaolinite in scavenging colloidal particles.

Although earlier workers have been at odds as to where amines adsorb on kaolinite, the present work indicates that both edge and basal surfaces are involved. Evidence for this contention is two-fold: (1) Face-to-face and edge-to-face flocculation of hexamethylenediamine kaolins has been observed. (2) Polyesters have been observed adsorbed on basal and edge surfaces of ethylenediamine-treated kaolins.

The mechanism by which kaolinite particles are bonded together into floc structures is unclear. Bridging by hexamethylenediammonium ions is a probable mechanism up to satisfaction of the cation-exchange capacity; further amine addition continues to promote flocculation. From this observation it is inferred that, in addition to bridging, hydrogen bonding and, perhaps, van der Waals forces are instrumental in floc formation. Although rheologically inferior to the untreated equivalent, these chemically induced flocs of kaolinite provide loosely packed, randomly oriented structures in paper coatings. Improved brightness, opacity, and printability of paper coatings arise from this structure.

The Nriagu polymer model of 2:1 layer type clay minerals develops from the premise that clay minerals are condensation copolymers of solid hydroxides. In the Mattigod-Sposito formulation of the model, standard state chemical potentials (standard Gibbs energies of formation from the elements) of 2:1 clay minerals are predicted quantitatively with a linear correlation equation relating the standard Gibbs energy of the polymerization reaction (ΔGor) to the half-cell layer charge of the clay mineral and to the valence and ionic radius of the exchangeable cation. It is now shown that this correlation equation can be derived from two basic assumptions: (1) that the standard Gibbs energy change for the transfer of a cation in a pure hydroxide solid to a hydroxide component in the tetrahedral or octahedral sheet of a 2:1 clay mineral is independent of the nature of the cation and (2) that the difference between ΔGor for the polymerization reaction to form a 2:1 clay mineral and ΔGor for the same reaction to form the zero layer-charge analog of the clay mineral is proportional to the number of interlayer exchangeable cations per unit cell of the clay mineral and to the radius of its exchangeable cation. Both of these assumptions can be tested experimentally, independent of the polymer model.

Batch data for the sorption of Eu and Th on pelagic sediments may be represented by equations of the form: ln M = A ln Cs + B/T + D, where M = concentration of sorbate on sediment, Cs = concentration of sorbate in solution, T = absolute temperature, and A, B, and D = constants. Thermodynamic interpretation of this equation leads to an expression for the true thermodynamic equilibrium constant of K = m/CsA and for the enthalpy change, ΔH, of d ln(M/CsA)/d(1/T) = −ΔH/R, where R = universal gas constant.

Experimentally, the sorption of Eu onto clay-rich sediments was very rapid in the first few seconds and slowed over an interval of minutes to hours. Rate curves were similar in shape to those of α-iron hydroxide, rather than of the oxalate-extracted residual sediment, indicating the importance of oxyhydroxide-like phases in the uptake of Eu onto red-clay sediments. For clay-rich sediments, numerical modeling reproduced the general features of a series of diffusion experiments. To a first approximation, the penetration of Eu into a sediment proceeded by saturation of the sediment to the depth of penetration and produced a sharp drop-off in sorbed + dissolved Eu concentration at the diffusion front. Higher partition coefficients (Kp) resulted in greater sorbed + dissolved concentrations, but reduced penetration. For calcareous sediments, however, Eu concentrations at the surface were much higher than at depth, presumably due to the formation of an insoluble carbonate.
