All spaces in this paper will be separable and metric. A closed embedding i: M → TV is said to be locally flat (of codimension n) if for each x0 ∈ M there is an open set U in M containing xo and an open embedding h: U X Rn → N for which h(x, 0) = i(x), for all x ∈ U.

The Brown-Peterson spectrum BP has been used recently to establish some new information about the stable homotopy groups of spheres [9; 11]. The best results have been achieved by using the associated homology theory BP*( ), the Hopf algebra BP*(BP), and the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence

The concept of an even cover is introduced early in elementary topology courses and is known to be valuable. Among other facts it is known that X is paracompact if and only if every open cover of X is even. In this paper we introduce the concept of an n-even cover and show its usefulness. Using n-even we define an embedding that on closed subsets is equivalent to collectionwise normal. We also give sufficient conditions for a point finite open cover to have a locally finite refinement and also sufficient conditions for this refinement to be even. Finally we show that the collection of all neighborhoods of the diagonal of X is a uniformity if and only if every even cover is normal. This last result is particularly interesting in light of the fact that every normal open cover is even.

Several authors [2; 3; 10; 12] have noticed the similarities between the theory of codes and the theory of Euclidean lattices. It is interesting to compare the two theories since they share a common problem, viz. the sphere packing problem. In the theory of codes one would like to find a code over Fp, i.e. a subspace of Fpn, such that non-intersecting spheres with respect to a given metric, centered at the code vectors, pack Fpn densely.

The theory of measure on topological spaces has in recent years found its most natural setting in the study of pavings and measures on such pavings (see e.g. [1-3; 5; 6; 10; 19; 22; 32; 33]. In this setting the relationship between measure and topology crystallizes since one concentrates primarily on the simpler internal lattice structure associated with sublattices of the topology rather than on the more complex topological structure.

The Orlicz-Pettis type theorems are essentially statements about the equivalence of strong and weak subseries convergence of series in topological groups. The corresponding problem of the equivalence of subfamily summability for summable families was examined for instance in [2] and (16). We give here another uncountable generalization of the Orlicz-Pettis theorem in the sense that we assume less than subfamily summability and obtain straightforward generalizations of the classical case, which include or imply in a trivial manner—at least for polar topologies on groups—all known theorems “from weak to strong σ-additivity”.

Most properties an algebraist needs in categories are reflected by regular functors, introduced in [6]. If is a regular and strongly finitary functor and has some nice properties, it can be shown that the left adjoint functor of G helps to characterize finitary and strongly finitary objects of . The property of being algebroidal can be lifted from to if a certain condition holds in . As an application, the implicational hull of subcategories can be constructed with the help of reduced products.

Let

The period lattice of F(N) is contained with finite index in the product of certain lattices Lr,s (see [6]), and to this inclusion of lattices there corresponds an isogeny of the Jacobian of F(N) onto a product of abelian varieties. The purpose of this paper is to determine when two factors in this product are isogenous over C, and whether they are absolutely simple.

The theory of minimal models, as developed by Sullivan [6; 8; 16] gives a method of computing the rational homotopy groups of a space X (that is, the homotopy groups of X tensored with the additive group of rationals Q). One associates to X a free, differential, graded-commutative lgebra , over Q, called the minimal model of X, from which one can read off the rational homotopy groups of X.

Let ∑ = PG(3, q) denote 3-dimensional projective space over GF(q). A partial spread of ∑ is a collection W of pairwise skew lines in ∑. W is said to be maximal if it is not properly contained in any other partial spread. If every point of ∑ is contained in some line of W, then W is called a spread. Since every spread of PG(3, q) consists of q2 + 1 lines, the deficiency of a partial spread W is defined to be the number d = q2 + 1 — |W|. A maximal partial spread of ∑ which is not a spread is called a maximal strictly partial spread (msp spread) of ∑.

A Banach algebra P over C with identity element is called an N-algebra if any closed ideal in P is the intersection of maximal ideals. An example is given by the algebra of the continuous C-valued functions on a compact Hausdorff space X under the supremum norm; two others are discussed in § 3.

This note addresses the question of characterizing the elements of a C*-algebra which have local unitary cross sections in the sense described below. Let denote a C*-algebra with identity and let denote the unitary group in .

The idea of one surface covering another is a useful one in the study of regular maps. Coxeter and Moser discuss a particular instance [3, p. 115] and the maps produced by Sherk [6] and Garbe [4] are formed by such coverings, though neither paper mentions that fact. In [5], Sherk explicitly constructs coverings of regular maps on the sphere.

The maximal ideals in a commutative Banach algebra with identity have been elegantly characterized [5; 6] as those subspaces of codimension one which do not contain invertible elements. Also, see [1]. For a function algebra A, a closed separating subalgebra with constants of the algebra of complex-valued continuous functions on the spectrum of A, a compact Hausdorff space, this characterization can be restated: Let F be a linear functional on A with the property:
