This paper is part of a program to study the conjecture of E. C. Dade on counting characters in blocks for several finite groups of Lie type. The local structures of certain radical chains of Chevalley groups of type G2 are given and the ordinary conjecture is confirmed for the groups when the characteristic of the modular representation is distinct from the defining characteristic of the groups.

An explicit description of a hyperbolic canonical coordinate system for an expansive automorphism of a compact connected abelian group is given. These dynamical systems are factors of subshifts of finite type. Some properties of the associated crossed product C*-algebra are discussed. In these examples, the C* -algebras of Ruelle are crossed product algebras.

it is necessary and sufficient that α > 1/p. This is, essentially, an extension of the Erdös-Turan theorem on L2 convergence. In an earlier paper, we analyzed convergence for all p > 1, showing the necessity and sufficiency of using the weighting factor 1 + Q for all p > 4. Our proofs of convergence are based on converse quadrature sum estimates, that are established using methods of H. König.

We investigate questions of spectral symmetry for certain first order differential operators acting on sections of bundles over manifolds which have a group action. We show that if the manifold is in fact a group we have simple spectral symmetry for all homogeneous operators. Furthermore if the manifold is not necessarily a group but has a compact Lie group of rank 2 or greater acting on it by isometries with discrete isotropy groups, and let D be a split invariant elliptic first order differential operator, then D has equivariant spectral symmetry.

Let where {λn}n ∈ Ζ is a sequence of real numbers such that |λn — n| ≤ Δ for some Δ > 0 and all n ∈ ℤ . Extending an obvious property of sin πz to which the function G reduces when Δ = 0 we show that is bounded by a constant independent of n. The result is then applied to a problem concerning derivative sampling in one and several variables.

We prove a number of results concerning the embedding of a Banach lattice X into an r. i. space Y. For example we show that if Y is an r. i. space on [0, ∞) which is p-convex for some p > 2 and has nontrivial concavity then any Banach lattice X which is r-convex for some r > 2 and embeds into Y must embed as a sublattice. Similar conclusions can be drawn under a variety of hypotheses on Y; if X is an r. i. space on [0, 1] one can replace the hypotheses of r-convexity for some r > 2 by X ≠ L2.

We also show that if Y is an order-continuous Banach lattice which contains no complemented sublattice lattice-isomorphic to ℓ2X is an order-continuous Banach lattice so that ℓ2 is not complementary lattice finitely representable in X and X is isomorphic to a complemented subspace of Y then X is isomorphic to a complemented sublattice of YN for some integer N.

This paper is devoted to extending formulas for the geometric approximate subdifferential and the Clarke subdifferential of extended-real-valued functions on Banach spaces. The results are strong enough to include completely the finite dimensional setting.

An implicitly defined second order ODE is said to be singular if the second derivative cannot be smoothly written in terms of lower order variables. The standard existence and uniqueness theory cannot be applied to such ODE and the graphs of solutions may fail to be regular curves (i.e., the solutions may have isolated C0-points or may fail to be single valued). In this paper we describe a local analysis for a large class of implicit second order ODE whose singular points satisfy a regularity condition. Within this class of ODE there is a secondary notion of (contact) singularity which is analogous to rest points for regular ODE. Theorems 5, 6, 7 and 8 produce invariants for these singularities which control the existence, uniqueness and the level of regularity in solutions.

Some oscillation criteria are given for the second order neutral delay differential equation

where τ and σ are nonnegative constants, . These results generalize and improve some known results about both neutral and delay differential equations.

An extension of the Naimark dilation theorem [N], [SzF2] to positive-definite functions on free semigroups is given. This is used to extend the operatorial trigonometric moment problem [A] to a non-commutative setting and to characterize the classes 𝐶ρ (ρ > 0) of all n-tuples of operators that have a p-isometric dilation (see [SzF2] for the case n = 1). It is also shown that 𝐶ρ ⊂ 𝐶ρ′ and 𝐶ρ ≠ 𝐶ρ′ for 0 < ρ < ρ′ < ∞.

The von Neumann inequality [vN], [Po2] is extended to the classes 𝐶p. This is used to prove that any element in 𝐶ρ is simultaneously similar to an element in 𝐶1.
