  • Between 1910 and 1966 British aircraft design fell into certain distinct periods, each of which, more or less irrespective of the number and arrangement of the power units, may be recognised by its common structural pattern. In each period, as might be expected, there were exceptions to the contemporary common pattern, often only experimental, or built in srrall numbers.

    In the first period, which lasted until about 1924, wirebraced wood airframe structures were the common pattern.

  • The First time I ever saw an aeroplane was at the age of ten when the whole school was rushed out in the middle of class to see two small specks in the sky which I realised later were two Curtiss JN4 aircraft with OX5 engines, which were to be used for pilot training in Canada.

    My first real interest in aviation was inspired by a lecture by the late Wing Commander Stedman, RCAF. This led to my being a provisional pilot officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force taking flying training.

  • This Account of Flying-Boats will deal mainly with British craft, and must necessarily have a personal approach from one who has been involved in flyingboat development over nearly the whole of its life history.

    The prehistoric giant amphibians suffered eclipse through changing environment; similarly changed conditions in Aviation caused the still-evolving flying-boat to come to the end of its economic life. Probably concrete runways were the basic reason for the disappearance of flying-boats for both civil and military use, since landplanes were then no longer restricted either in size of efficiency or aerodrome conditions.
