Summary
In the preceding chapters we have seen a variety of original datasets built, merged, statistically analyzed, and interpreted. These data reveal how lobbyists’ efforts – including any campaign assistance they provide – are significantly linked to observable legislative actions by Members of Congress. Using lobbyists’ personal and PAC contributions, which I linked to their clients and employers; Members’ daily schedules; information about fundraising events; the written preferences of 866 groups regarding proposed health reform provisions; and the details of 564 amendments offered by senators in committee, we have seen the influence of lobbyists’ campaign assistance on their access to Members, on groups’ propensity to realize their policy objectives, and on lobbyists’ ability to secure microlegislation. In this final chapter, we draw together and evaluate the three themes of the book, noting some lessons for future researchers about where to look for possible influences of lobbying and campaign donations on politicians and the laws they produce.
