The long-standing assumption that aboveground plant litter inputs have a substantial influence on soil organic carbon storage (SOC) and dynamics has been challenged by a new paradigm for SOC formation and persistence. We tested the importance of plant litter chemistry on SOC storage, distribution, composition, and age by comparing two highly contrasting ecosystems: an old-growth coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forest, with highly aromatic litter, and an adjacent coastal prairie, with more easily decomposed litter. We hypothesized that if plant litter chemistry was the primary driver, redwood would store more and older SOC that was less microbially processed than prairie. Total soil carbon stocks to 110 cm depth were higher in prairie (35 kg C m−2) than redwood (28 kg C m−2). Radiocarbon values indicated shorter SOC residence times in redwood than prairie throughout the profile. Higher amounts of pyrogenic carbon and a higher degree of microbial processing of SOC appear to be instrumental for soil carbon storage and persistence in prairie, while differences in fine-root carbon inputs likely contribute to younger SOC in redwood. We conclude that at these sites fire residues, root inputs, and soil properties influence soil carbon dynamics to a greater degree than the properties of aboveground litter.

Better understanding of the functional biology of early angiosperms may clarify ecological factors surrounding their origin and early radiation. Phylogenetic studies identify Amborella, Nymphaeales (water lilies), Austrobaileyales, and Chloranthaceae as extant lineages that branched before the radiation of core angiosperms. Among living plants, these lineages may represent the best models for the ecology and physiology of early angiosperms. Here we combine phylogenetic reconstruction with new data on the morphology and ecophysiology of these plants to infer early angiosperm function. With few exceptions, Amborella, Austrobaileyales, and Chloranthaceae share ecophysiological traits associated with shady, disturbed, and wet habitats. These features include low and easily light-saturated photosynthetic rates, leaf anatomy related to the capture of understory light, small seed size, and clonal reproduction. Some Chloranthaceae, however, possess higher photosynthetic capacities and seedlings that recruit in canopy gaps and other sunny, disturbed habitats, which may have allowed Cretaceous Chloranthaceae to expand into more diverse environments. In contrast, water lilies possess ecophysiological features linked to aquatic, sunny habitats, such as absence of a vascular cambium, ventilating stems and roots, and floating leaves tuned for high photosynthetic rates in full sun. Nymphaeales may represent an early radiation into such aquatic environments. We hypothesize that the earliest angiosperms were woody plants that grew in dimly lit, disturbed forest understory habitats and/or shady streamside settings. This ecology may have restricted the diversity of pre-Aptian angiosperms and living basal lineages. The vegetative flexibility that evolved in the understory, however, may have been a key factor in their diversification in other habitats. Our inferences based on living plants are consistent with many aspects of the Early Cretaceous fossil record and can be tested with further study of the anatomy, chemistry, and sedimentological context of Early Cretaceous angiosperm fossils.

Our common view on water uptake by terrestrial plants is that it occurs via absorption by roots from the soil substrate. However, it has long been known that plants exhibit alternative water-absorption strategies, particularly in drought-prone environments. Examples include many tropical epiphytic orchids which use a specialized structure called velamen radicum around their aerial roots for moisture absorption directly from the air (Capesius & Barthlott 1975), specialized trichomes in bromeliads (Andrade 2003, Benzing 1990), uptake by hydathodes into leaves of species inhabiting dry desert ecosystems of Namibia (Martin & von Willert 2000) and foliar absorption by coastal California redwoods during the summer fog season (Burgess & Dawson 2004). One of the most intriguing and yet, least-studied examples of adaptations to severe water limitation is found with desiccation-tolerant plants (also called resurrection plants). During drought periods, the water content of these plants can equilibrate with the low relative humidity of the air to the point that the plants appear dead. However, when water is supplied, these plants fully rehydrate (Alpert 2000, Bewley & Krochko 1982) and become physiologically active. Desiccation-tolerant vascular plants are rare in most ecosystems but diverse in tropical inselbergs (granitic outcrops; Porembski & Barthlott 2000). Relatively little is known about inselberg species particularly from an ecophysiological perspective (see Lüttge 1997 and Klüge & Brulfert 2000 for reviews).
