Pre-diagnostic deficits in social motivation are hypothesized to contribute to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a heritable neurodevelopmental condition. We evaluated psychometric properties of a social motivation index (SMI) using parent-report item-level data from 597 participants in a prospective cohort of infant siblings at high and low familial risk for ASD. We tested whether lower SMI scores at 6, 12, and 24 months were associated with a 24-month ASD diagnosis and whether social motivation’s course differed relative to familial ASD liability. The SMI displayed good internal consistency and temporal stability. Children diagnosed with ASD displayed lower mean SMI T-scores at all ages and a decrease in mean T-scores across age. Lower group-level 6-month scores corresponded with higher familial ASD liability. Among high-risk infants, strong decline in SMI T-scores was associated with 10-fold odds of diagnosis. Infant social motivation is quantifiable by parental report, differentiates children with versus without later ASD by age 6 months, and tracks with familial ASD liability, consistent with a diagnostic and susceptibility marker of ASD. Early decrements and decline in social motivation indicate increased likelihood of ASD, highlighting social motivation’s importance to risk assessment and clarification of the ontogeny of ASD.

Rare scales of agnathan thelodonts Paralogania ludlowiensis and Thelodus sp. cf. T. parvidens, or alternatively Thelodus macintoshi, and acanthodian fishes Nostolepis striata, Gomphonchus sp., Gomphonchoporus sp. aff. G. hoppei, and Machaeraporus stonehousensis (Legault) n. gen., plus acanthodian fin spines, teeth and tooth whorls have been identified from the upper Moydart and Stonehouse formations near Arisaig, Nova Scotia. The assemblage agrees well with the late Silurian (uppermost Ludlow–Přídolí) age assigned to these strata based on invertebrate assemblages, and the vertebrate taxa show affinity with British and Baltic faunas of this age. All vertebrate-bearing strata were deposited in various positions off the western shores of the Avalonia terrane during or after its collision with Laurentia.

The structure of the metal–organic framework (MOF) compound [{Ca(H2O)6}{CaGd(oxydiacetate)3}2]·4H2O was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and refined using conventional single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. In addition, the structure was refined using powder diffraction data collected from two sources, a conventional X-ray diffractometer in Bragg–Brentano geometry and a 12-detector high resolution synchrotron-based diffractometer in transmission geometry. Data from the latter were processed in three different ways to account for crystalline decay or radiation damage. One dataset was obtained by averaging the multiple detector patterns, another dataset was obtained by cutting the non-overlapping portions of each detector to consider only the first few minutes of data collection and a dose-corrected dataset was obtained by fitting the independent peaks in every dataset and extrapolating the intensity and peak position to the initial time of data collection or to zero-absorbed dose. The compared structural models obtained show that special processing of powder diffraction data produced a much accurate model, close to the single-crystal-based model for this particular compound with heavy atoms in high symmetry positions that do not contribute to a significant number of diffraction intensities.

Knowledge of normal aortic dimensions is important in the management of children with aortic disease. So as to define such dimensions, we undertook a retrospective review of clinical data and aortic cineangiograms from 167 subjects without aortic disease having a mean age of 3.67 years, with a range from 0.01 to 14.95 years. Amongst the patients, 56 were without detectable cardiac lesions, 66 patients had mild pulmonary stenosis, 30 were seen with Kawasaki disease, and 15 with small interatrial defects within the oval fossa. Aorto-grams were available in all. No patient had any hemodynamic derangement that would have affected the aorta during intrauterine life or childhood. Systolic dimensions were measured in the ascending and descending aorta at the level of the carina, at the transverse aortic arch distal to the brachiocephalic, of the left common carotid artery at its origin, at the transverse aortic arch distal to the left common carotid artery, at the aortic isthmus, and of the aorta at the level of the diaphragm. A regression analysis model was used to establish the range of predicted normal values, with their confidence limits, standardizing the values to height as the biophysical parameter having the highest correlation to aortic dimensions. Normal ranges were established for all the levels of measurement. The data should prove useful in identifying abnormalities of the thoracic aorta during childhood, and when assessing the outcomes of interventions.

For the visualization of the coronary arterial patterns in complete transposition (concordant atrioventricular and discordant ventriculoarterial connections), balloon occlusion aortography has been performed in right and left anterior oblique or in frontal and lateral views. These views, however, are often unsatisfactory because of super-imposition of the aortic sinuses. The so-called “laid-back” view is a newly developed angiographic projection in which the aortic sinuses and the intervening commissures are imaged as if they were seen from below and the front. We performed such laid-back aortography in 36 consecutive patients with an echocardiographic diagnosis of complete transposition. In 23 of 36 patients, we obtained additional aortograms in right and left anterior oblique views. For the evaluation of the diagnostic value of the laid-back view, as compared with that of the combined right and left anterior oblique views, both sets of aortograms were reviewed independently by the five reviewers who were asked to make a diagnosis and to specify their levels of confidence (“definite,” “probable,” and “possible”) for their diagnosis. Error rates were significantly lower for the laid-back aortograms than for the combined right and left aortograms (4 and 11%, respectively). An increased level of confidence was significantly associated with the laid-back aortograms. We illustrate the anatomy of various coronary arterial patterns seen by laid-back aortography.

Interdigitated back contact silicon heterojunction (IBC-SHJ) solar cells have been developed. This structure has interdigitated p/n amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) films deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) on the backside of crystalline silicon (c-Si) wafers, with light irradiating the front surface. IBC-SHJ cells possess advantages over front junction a-Si:H/c-Si heterojunction cells due to minimized current losses in the illuminating side, and over traditional diffused back-junction cells due to low temperature processing combined with the potential of high voltages for the heterojunction. Current-voltage curves, spectral response and laser beam induced current maps have been used to characterize the IBC-SHJ cells. It was found that the IBC-SHJ cell has non-linear illumination level dependence that correlates with effective minority-carrier lifetime. As the performance of these cells is very sensitive to the quality of passivation on front surface, they are ideally suited as a diagnostic tool for detail characterization of surface passivation. Initial cell structures have achieved independently confirmed cell efficiencies of 11.8% under AM1.5 illumination. Device simulation shows an efficiency of higher than 20% can be expected after optimizing the IBC-SHJ cells.

The act of design is a complex of actions and abilities that is evolving and often highly individual. Given the context of human–computer interaction, and a commitment to the model of design space exploration, we identify two axes that help position efforts to realize this model: the spectrum of strengths and needs that stretches from the machine to the human, and the time scale of events in design. Considering a section of each reveals a landscape that prefers certain activities and gives rise to particular emphases. This paper places the other authors in this Special Issue upon this map, and argues the value of typed feature structures and information orderings to the endeavor of realizing design space explorers.

Design space exploration is a long-standing focus in computational design research. Its three main threads are accounts of designer action, development of strategies for amplification of designer action in exploration, and discovery of computational structures to support exploration. Chief among such structures is the design space, which is the network structure of related designs that are visited in an exploration process. There is relatively little research on design spaces to date. This paper sketches a partial account of the structure of both design spaces and research to develop them. It focuses largely on the implications of designers acting as explorers.

We observed 4 planetary transits of HD 209458 with the STIS spectrograph on HST, and generated a photometric time series with extremely rapid cadence and high precision. We use these data to better constrain the orbital, stellar, and planetary parameters, and to search for circumplanetary rings and planetary satellites.

On 22 May 1990, the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR) and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY) carried out their old pledge to unite into a single Republic of Yemen. This historic event occurred less than three years after the YAR, seemingly secure and comfortable in its separateness, celebrated its silver jubilee in 1987. This article traces and assesses political development and socioeconomic modernization in the YAR over this more than 25-year period, and hazards some guesses on the implications of these changes for current efforts to implement Yemeni unification.
