Results are presented for a class of self-similar solutions of the steady, axisymmetric Navier–Stokes equations, representing the flows in slender (quasi-cylindrical) vortices. Effects of vortex strength, axial gradients and compressibility are studied. The presence of viscosity is shown to couple the parameters describing the core growth rate and the external flow field, and numerical solutions show that the presence of an axial pressure gradient has a strong effect on the axial flow in the core. For the viscous compressible vortex, near-zero densities and pressures and low temperatures are seen on the vortex axis as the strength of the vortex increases. Compressibility is also shown to have a significant influence upon the distribution of vorticity in the vortex core.

A spectral collocation and matrix eigenvalue method is used to study the linear stability of the trailing line vortex model of Batchelor. For both the inviscid and viscous stability problem, the entire unstable region in the swirl/axial wavenumber parameter space is mapped out for various azimuthal wavenumbers m. In the inviscid case, the non-axisymmetric perturbation with azimuthal wavenumber m = 1 has an unstable region of larger extent than any other, with an unusual two-lobed structure; also, the location and numerical value of the maximum disturbance growth rate previously reported for this case are shown to be incorrect. Exploiting the increasingly localized structure of perturbation eigenfunctions allows accurate results to be obtained up to values of m more than 3 orders of magnitude larger than previously, and the results for the most unstable mode are in excellent agreement with the asymptotic theory of Leibovich & Stewartson. A viscous analysis of these fundamentally inviscid modes reveals that the critical Reynolds number at which instability first occurs increases as O(m2) for m [Gt ] 1, and finds the critical values of swirl and wavenumber, which approach limiting values as m → ∞.
In the viscous case, the instabilities for m = 0 and 1 recently reported by Khorrami are found via a simplified numerical approach and the entire unstable region for each of these modes is mapped out over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. The critical Reynolds numbers for these modes are found to be 322.42 and 17.527, respectively, the latter having been unreported previously. The instabilities persist in the limit of large Reynolds number, with corresponding disturbance growth rates decreasing roughly as 1/Re. In addition to the primary mode, a new family of long-wave viscous instabilities is found for the m = 1 case.

Mass political participation increases as nations become more economically developed. In Part I of this study we attempted to identify the significant social experiences which explain the high levels of participation in economically developed nations. We formulated and explored the following general theory:
Economic development alters the social structure of a nation. As nations become more economically developed, three major changes occur: (1) the relative size of the upper and middle classes becomes greater; (2) larger numbers of citizens are concentrated in the urban areas; and (3) the density and complexity of economic and secondary organizations increases. These social changes imply political changes. Greater proportions of the population find themselves in life situations which lead to increased political information, political awareness, sense of personal political efficacy, and other relevant attitudes. These attitude changes, in turn, lead to increases in political participation.
The theory can be presented schematically in the following form:
We were able to demonstrate that individuals' levels of social status and organizational involvement were strongly and consistently related to their levels of political participation. The survey data from five nations showed, further, that organizational involvement was more strongly related to participation, and more consistently from nation to nation, than was social status.

Economic development has consequences for many aspects of social life. Some of these social consequences, in turn, have an impact on a nation's political life. Studies of social mobilization, for example, have demonstrated that economic development is associated with sharp increases in the general level of political participation. These studies report strong relationships between aggregate socio-economic measures such as per capita income, median level of education, and percentage of the population in urban areas, on one hand, and aggregate measures of political participation, such as voting turnout, on the other. Simultaneously, scholars conducting surveys of individual political participation consistently have reported that an individual's social status, education, and organizational memberships strongly affect the likelihood of his engaging in various types of political activities.
In spite of the consistency of both sets of findings across many studies and although the findings appear frequently in analysis of political stability, democracy, and even strategies of political growth, we know little about the connections between social structure and political participation. With few exceptions the literature on individual participation is notable for low level generalizations (the better educated citizen talks about politics more regularly), and the absence of systematic and comprehensive theory. While the literature on the growth of national political participation has been more elaborate theoretically, the dependence on aggregate measures has made it difficult to determine empirically how these macro social changes structure individuals' life experiences in ways which alter their political behavior.
