We will present a simplified approximate model showing how even small changes in the dielectric response result in substantial variations in the Hamaker coefficient of the van der Waals interactions. Since all the terms in the Matsubara summation depends on the variation of the dielectric response spectra at one particular frequency, the total change in the Hamaker coefficient depends on the spectral changes not only at that frequency but also at the rest of the spectrum properly weighted. The Matsubara terms most affected by the addition of a single peak are not those close to the position of the added peak, but are distributed over the entire range of frequencies. We comment on the possibility of eliminating van der Waals interactions and/or drastically reducing them by spectral variation in a narrow regime of frequencies.

Over 90% of Hymenolepis diminuta cysts administered by stomach tube become established in CFLP, and Porton strains of mice. The rate of growth of single worm infections in terms of dry weight and length was determined. The rate of growth of H. diminuta in mice is slower than in rats even in worms only a few mm long. In most mice growth ceases abruptly on day 10±1 day when the worm is 4–30 cm long, destrobilation usually occurs leaving a scolex and neck often 0·5–2 mm in length. Destrobilated worms can survive for at least 47 days but little if any regrowth occurs unless the worms are surgically transplanted into rats or previously uninfected mice. Normal growth appears to be resumed within hours in both recipient hosts. The cause of destrobilation is probably not physiological; position of establishment and forward migration during growth of the worm in mice is similar to that in a rat. Destrobilation occurs well before the worm fills the small intestine lengthwise. Strong evidence of an immunological response being involved is given by the fate of a secondary infection given 22 and 28 days after the primary. Lower % recoveries were recorded in secondary infections killed 6–9 days later, and the worms were severely stunted. The various lines of evidence are discussed and it is concluded no reasonable doubt exists that H. diminuta is rejected by CFLP and Porton mice as a result of an immunological response.

Schistocephalus plerocercoids in the weight range 2–200mg F.W. recovered from the perivisceral cavity of Gasterosteus aculeatus were cultured in various media. In a medium composed of 25% horse serum, 0·5% yeast extract, 0·65% glucose and Hanks's saline at pH 7·1, 21°C, 95% air +5% CO2, dry weight increases of up to 500% were recorded in 8 days. The specific growth rate of large plerocercoids was only one-tenth of the rate observed in small plerocercoids. A plerocercoid of double the weight of another had approximately half the specific growth rate.
Worms after 8 days cultivation were found to have only slightly higher than normal glycogen and water content, and to be able to mature when heated to 40°C. However, the rate of growth slowed to zero by the 24th day in culture at 21°C. Electron microscopic examination showed a ‘deposit’ formed over the microvilli, thin at 8 days but dense after 21 days.
The in vivo glycogen and water content of plerocercoids from 3–300 mg F.W. was determined. Glycogen rose from 24% in plerocercoids of 10mg F. W. to 50–55% in plerocercoids over 80mg F. W. The water content was found to mimic precisely this change, falling from 82% to a plateau of 67–69%.
We wish to thank Professor Gareth Owen for permission to use the photograph shown in the Plate and for his help while using the electron microscope. It is also a pleasure to thank Miss Patricia Grant for her technical assistance.

The normal position of attachment of the scolex of H. diminuta from day 6 to day 27 in single worm infections in male Wistar rats was determined. A migration forward from a position of attachment 30–40% down the length of the small intestine to the 10–20% region during day 7 to day 14 was confirmed. A concomitant and slightly faster movement backwards of the posterior of the worm led to the mid-point of the strobila changing from 35 to 50% down the intestine. By day 18 the worms were mature and occupied the whole small intestine except the anterior 10% and the posterior 5–10%. The worms weighed approximately 350 mg dry weight (= 1550 mg fresh weight) at maturity, no significant weight increase occurred thereafter.
6½ and 7½ day-old worms were transplanted from donor rats into the duodenum or posterior ileum. Nearly 100% recovery of the single worm transplants in recipient rats was obtained. Both anterior and posterior implanted worms returned to the region of the intestine from which they had been removed. Migration was measured over periods of 13–72 h and was found to be complete within 24 h. Worms transplanted into the duodenum continued to grow at nearly the normal rate but worm transplants into the posterior ileum lost nearly a day's growth. The significance of this point is discussed.
Opium was found to prevent migration of the tapeworm, but ligation of the bile duct did not prevent the tapeworm migrating forward from a point of insertion near the ileo-caecal junction.
The evidence confirms the concept that a tapeworm is a dynamic organism capable of recognizing a specific region of the intestine, of detecting when it is not in this region, of being able to interpret one or more stimuli to indicate direction and of having a motor system sufficiently coordinated to overcome peristalsis.
We gratefully acknowledge financial support by the Medical Research Council (London) and technical assistance from Miss Helen Stallard, B.Sc., Miss Pat Grant and Miss Gillian Moore. One of us (Trond Braten) wishes also to thank the University of Glasgow for the award of a Visiting Fellowship.
