Vitamin D plays an important role in skeletal health throughout life. Some studies have hypothesised that vitamin D may reduce the risk of other diseases. Our study aimed to estimate age-specific and sex-specific serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) status and to identify the determinants of serum 25(OH)D status in Hong Kong, a subtropical city in southern China. In 2009–2010, households in Hong Kong were followed up to identify acute respiratory illnesses, and sera from 2694 subjects were collected in three to four different study phases to permit measurement of 25(OH)D levels at different times of the year. A questionnaire survey on diet and lifestyle was conducted among children, with simultaneous serum collection in April and May 2010. The mean of serum 25(OH)D levels in age groups ranged from 39 to 63 nmol/l throughout the year with the mean values in all age groups in spring below 50 nmol/l. Children aged 6–17 years, and girls and women had significantly lower serum 25(OH)D levels than adults, and boys and men, respectively (all P< 0·001). We estimated that serum 25(OH)D levels in Hong Kong followed a lagged pattern relative to climatic season by 5 weeks with lowest observed levels in early spring (March). For children aged 6–17 years, reporting a suntan, having at least 1 servings of fish/week and having at least 1 serving of eggs/week were independently associated with higher serum 25(OH)D levels. Adequate sunlight exposure and increased intake of dietary vitamin D could improve vitamin D status, especially for children and females in the winter and spring.

Summary
The Central Pennsylvania study area was incorporated into the Global Change and Local Places project because it provides telling contrasts with the other three study areas. Part of its economy relies heavily on local coal, a potential target for greenhouse gas mitigation strategies, and most of the Central Pennsylvania study area's greenhouse gas emissions originate in local coal resources. If forced to reduce emissions substantially, the area either would have to find ways to reduce sharply the emissions seemingly inherent in coal use, or stop using coal, removing one of the mainstays of the local economy. A second attraction for Global Change and Local Places was that the area has been a focus for research on regional development and climate change by faculty and students at the Pennsylvania State University, and attention to the effects of scale of analysis has been an integral part of that research.
Landscape, life, and livelihood
The five-county study area in the center of Pennsylvania (Figure 2.7) is a complex, sparsely populated amalgam of Appalachia and academia. Its population was 305,000 in 1990. For the study area in its entirely, population growth has been a modest 13% since 1970. The municipality of State College, home to Penn State University, is the largest settlement in the region with a population of 40,000 students and an equal number of permanent residents. The university population's influence is evident in the average age of residents in the respective counties.

Summary
Global change is rooted in localities. The impacts of global warming, as well as adaptations to warming and attempts to ameliorate it, will occur in communities at local and regional scales. In some respects global climate change is analogous to other societal dilemmas. Local communities contribute to large, intractable problems; local initiatives may arise in the absence of larger efforts to address the problems; and localities grapple with policies and regulations imposed upon them from afar. Within each Global Change and Local Places study area, there are human–environment analogs that yield insights into how greenhouse gas mitigation could proceed at locality scale.
Earlier chapters have documented the import of understanding the driving forces that generate regional greenhouse gas emissions, tracked changes in emissions through time, and assessed greenhouse gas abatement potentials in the Global Change and Local Places study areas. Examining the structures and dynamics of societal attempts to mitigate threats analogous to global warming offers fresh insights for science and policy formulation. Whereas prior work has focused on using analogs to anticipate impacts and adaptation, this chapter emphasizes analogy to understand mitigation processes. For purposes of this analysis, adaptation denotes the array of societal coping responses to an environmental threat such as climate change. Mitigation means efforts to abate the threat itself, such as limiting the release of greenhouse gases or acting to absorb them.
