The Asian tapir Tapirus indicus is the only tapir species in Southeast Asia. It is declining across its range and is categorized as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The forests of Sumatra are critical to Asian tapir conservation as they contain some of the last remaining populations of the species, yet conservation efforts are hindered by a lack of information on habitat suitability. We collated camera-trap data from nine landscapes across 69,500 km2 of Sumatran rainforest to help predict suitable habitat for Asian tapirs on the island. Predictions from Bayesian occupancy models demonstrated that tapir occupancy was greatest in forests below 600 m elevation and exclusively in forests with high aboveground biomass. Forests around the Barisan Mountains on the west of Sumatra provide the most suitable habitat for the species. Only 36% of the most critical habitat (i.e. 80th percentile of predicted occupancy values, or above) for tapirs is formally protected for conservation, with much of the remainder found in forests allocated to watershed protection (35%) or logging (23%). We highlight several key areas in Sumatra where tapir conservation could be bolstered, such as by leveraging existing conservation efforts for other charismatic flagships species on the island.

The Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus is a generalist species that inhabits temperate and arctic coasts of the north Atlantic Ocean. In recent years, there has been growing concern about population declines at local and regional scales; however, there has been no attempt to robustly assess Great Black-backed Gull population trends across its global range. We obtained the most recent population counts across the species’ range and analysed population trends at a global, continental, and national scale over the most recent three-generation period (1985–2021) following IUCN Red List criteria. We found that, globally, the species has declined by 43%–48% over this period (1.2–1.3% per annum, respectively), from an estimated 291,000 breeding pairs to 152,000–165,000 breeding pairs under two different scenarios. North American populations declined more steeply than European ones (68% and 28%, respectively). We recommend that Great Black-backed Gull should be uplisted from ‘Least Concern’ to ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species under criterion A2 (an estimated reduction in population size >30% over three generations).

Summary
THIS CHAPTER INVESTIGATES how the protagonists of two Íslendingasögur, namely Fóstbroeðra saga and Droplaugarsona saga, use disguise in such a way as to distort the social cognition of their opponents, thereby allowing them to gain an advantage over their enemies. The term “social cognition” is most commonly used as a technical term within the field of social psychology, where, on its most basic level, it refers to the various mental processes, such as stereotyping and the creation of social schemas, by which people conceptualize their relationships with and towards other people. These processes are related to the development of social norms, in that they produce frameworks of behavioural expectation which relate to the types of individuals and groups that a person might encounter. These frameworks lead people to develop preconceptions as to how to interact with others in different social situations, thereby allowing them to predict more comfortably the behaviour of other people and to react accordingly. As Susan Fiske and Shelley Taylor put it,
Like it or not, we all make assumptions about other people, ourselves, and the situations we encounter […] Much of the time our expectations are functional, and indeed, we would be unable to operate without them. Such expectations, assumptions, and generic prior knowledge allow us some sense of prediction and control, which is essential to our well-being […] Categories and schemas allow us the comforting sense that we understand our world, and often they are accurate enough, although sometimes they are sadly mistaken.
At its most basic level, the exploration of social cognition therefore looks to explain “how people make sense of other people and themselves.” It would be anachronistic to apply the specific findings of psychological research to saga literature, given that the terminology and scientific methods of this modern discipline were not available to the sagas’ medieval audiences, but it can nevertheless be useful in reading the sagas to consider the core concept of social cognition, that a person's understanding of their social landscape is rooted in the expectations that they have of how other people are likely to think and behave in different situations. This chapter therefore uses the term “social cognition” in a broad sense to refer to the nexus of social norms and expectations that figures in saga literature could reasonably be said to have in relation to particular individuals and to different types of people.

Objective:
To review the evidence evaluating perioperative intranasal mupirocin for the prevention of surgical-site infections according to type of surgical procedure.
Design:Systematic review and meta-analysis of published clinical trials.
Setting:Studies included were either randomized clinical trial or prospective trials at a single institution that measured outcomes both before and after an institution-wide intervention (before-after trial). In all studies, intervention and control groups differed only by the use of perioperative intranasal mupirocin in the intervention group.
Patients:Patients undergoing general or nongeneral surgery (eg, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopedic surgery, and neurosurgery).
Main Outcome Measure:Risk of surgical-site infection following perioperative intranasal mupirocin versus usual care.
Results:Three randomized and four before-after trials met the inclusion criteria. No reduction in surgical-site infection rate was seen in randomized general surgery trials (summary estimates: 8.4% in the mupirocin group and 8.1% in the control group; relative risk [RR], 1.04; 95% confidence interval [CI95], 0.81 to 1.33). In nongeneral surgery, the use of mupirocin was associated with a reduction in surgical-site infection in randomized trials (summary estimates: 6.0% in the mupirocin group and 7.6% in the control group; RR, 0.80; CI95, 0.58 to 1.10) and in before-after trials (summary estimates: 1.7% in the mupirocin group and 4.1% in the control group; RR, 0.40; CI95, 0.29 to 0.56).
Conclusions:Perioperative intranasal mupirocin appears to decrease the incidence of surgical-site infection when used as prophylaxis in nongeneral surgery. Given its low risk and low cost, use of perioperative intranasal mupirocin should be considered in these settings.
