The oscillating relativistic electrons in the accelerating/focusing wakefields of plasma accelerators emit electromagnetic radiation known as betatron radiation (BR). The proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration has been demonstrated in the Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE) at CERN; however, its accompanying radiation emission is less explored compared with those in the laser- and electron beam-driven plasma accelerators. In this paper, a detailed simulation study of BR in the AWAKE is presented. Considering the new set-up of the AWAKE Run 2 (2021–), the radiation emission from both the witness electron beam and the seeding electron beam is investigated using particle-in-cell simulations. The influence of radial size mismatch and misaligned off-axis injection on the witness beam dynamics, as well as the spectral features of the relevant BR are studied. These non-ideal electron injections are likely to occur in experiment. The proton self-modulation stage is also investigated with a close look at the seeding electron beam dynamics and its BR. As a footprint of the emitting particles, BR can provide valuable information about the beam dynamics. Some practical challenges to implement the betatron diagnostic in the AWAKE Run 2 experiment are also addressed.

All-optical Compton sources combine laser-wakefield accelerators and intense scattering pulses to generate ultrashort bursts of backscattered radiation. The scattering pulse plays the role of a small-period undulator (${\sim }1\,\mathrm {\mu }{\rm m}$) in which relativistic electrons oscillate and emit X-ray radiation. To date, most of the working laser-plasma accelerators operate preferably at energies of a few hundreds of megaelectronvolts and the Compton sources developed so far produce radiation in the range from hundreds of kiloelectronvolts to a few megaelectronvolts. However, for such applications as medical imaging and tomography the relevant energy range is 10–100 keV. In this article, we discuss different scattering geometries for the generation of X-rays in this range. Through numerical simulations, we study the influence of electron beam parameters on the backscattered photons. We find that the spectral bandwidth remains constant for beams of the same emittance regardless of the scattering geometry. A shallow interaction angle of $30^{\circ }$ or less seems particularly promising for imaging applications given parameters of existing laser-plasma accelerators. Finally, we discuss the influence of the radiation properties for potential applications in medical imaging and non-destructive testing.

We study the stability of plasma wake wave and the properties of density-downramp injection in an electron-driven plasma accelerator. In this accelerator type, a short high-current electron bunch (generated by a conventional accelerator or a laser–wakefield acceleration stage) drives a strongly nonlinear plasma wake wave (blowout), and accelerated electrons are injected into it using a sharp density transition which leads to the elongation of the wake. The accelerating structure remains highly stable until the moment some electrons of the driver reach almost zero energy, which corresponds to the best interaction length for optimal driver-to-plasma energy transfer efficiency. For a particular driver, this efficiency can be optimised by choosing appropriate plasma density. Studying the dependence of the current of the injected bunch on driver and plasma parameters, we show that it does not depend on the density downramp length as long as the condition for trapping is satisfied. Most importantly, we find that the current of the injected bunch primarily depends on just one parameter which combines both the properties of the driver (its current and duration) and the plasma density.

The ability to quickly refresh gas-jet targets without cycling the vacuum chamber makes them a promising candidate for laser-accelerated ion experiments at high repetition rate. Here we present results from the first high repetition rate ion acceleration experiment on the VEGA-3 PW-class laser at CLPU. A near-critical density gas-jet target was produced by forcing a 1000 bar H$_2$ and He gas mix through bespoke supersonic shock nozzles. Proton energies up to 2 MeV were measured in the laser forward direction and 2.2 MeV transversally. He$^{2+}$ ions up to 5.8 MeV were also measured in the transverse direction. To help maintain a consistent gas density profile over many shots, nozzles were designed to produce a high-density shock at distances larger than 1 mm from the nozzle exit. We outline a procedure for optimizing the laser–gas interaction by translating the nozzle along the laser axis and using different nozzle materials. Several tens of laser interactions were performed with the same nozzle which demonstrates the potential usefulness of gas-jet targets as high repetition rate particle source.

In this paper, the modelling and manufacturing of a two-stage supersonic gas jet nozzle enabling the formation of adaptive plasma concentration profiles for injection and acceleration of electrons using few-cycle laser beams are presented. The stages are modelled using the rhoSimpleFoam algorithm of the OpenFOAM computational fluid dynamics software. The first 200–300 ${\rm \mu}$m diameter nozzle stage is dedicated to 1 % N2 + He gas jet formation and electron injection. By varying the pressure between the first and second stages of the injectors, the electron injection location could be adjusted, and the maximum acceleration distance could be ensured. By changing the concentration of the nitrogen in the gas mixture, the charge of the accelerated electrons could be controlled. The second nozzle stage is designed for acceleration in fully ionised He or hydrogen gas and forms the optimal plasma concentration for bubble formation depending on the laser pulse energy, duration and focused beam diameter. In order to reduce the diameter of the plasma profile formed by the first nozzle and the concentration drop gap between the two nozzles, a one-side straight section was introduced in the first nozzle. The shock wave reflected from the straight section of the wall propagates parallel to the shock wave of the intersecting supersonic jets and ensures a minimal gap between the jets. The second-stage longitudinal plasma concentration profile could have an increasing gas density gradient to compensate for dephasing between the electron bunch and the plasma wave due to wave shortening with increasing plasma concentration.

Laser-driven ion acceleration is well established using solid targets mainly in the target normal sheath acceleration regime. To follow the increasing repetition rate available on high-intensity lasers, the use of high-density gas targets has been explored in the past decade. When interacting with targets reaching densities close to the critical one, the laser pulse can trigger different acceleration mechanisms such as Collisionless Shock Acceleration (CSA) or hole boring. Particle-in-cell simulations using ideal target profiles show that CSA can accelerate a collimated, narrow energy spread and few hundreds of megaelectronvolts ion beam on the laser axis. Nevertheless, in real experiments, the laser will not only interact with an overcritical, thin plasma slab with sharp density gradients, but also with lower density regions surrounding the core of the gas jet, extending to several hundreds of micrometres. The interaction of the laser with these lower density wings will lead to nonlinear effects that will reduce the available energy to drive the shock in the high-density region of the target. Optically tailoring this target could mitigate that issue. Recent experiments conducted on different laser facilities aimed at testing several tailoring configurations. We first tested a scheme with a copropagating picosecond prepulse to create a lower density plasma channel to facilitate the propagation of the main pulse, while the second one was a transverse tailoring driven by nanosecond laser pulses to generate blast waves and form a high-density plasma slab. The main results will be presented here and the methods compared.
