Summary

The 2006 GMC publication Good Medical Practice sets out the principles and values upon which good practice is founded and is the professional code of practice for doctors in the UK. The guidance is addressed to doctors, but it is also intended to let the public know what they can expect from doctors. The seven domains constitute the basis for satisfactory appraisal and assessment of all doctors. Every Royal College has used the guidance to formulate good practice guidelines specific to their specialty.

The seven domains are:

  • Good clinical care

  • Maintaining good medical practice

  • Teaching and training, appraising and assessing

  • Relationships with patients

  • Working with colleagues

  • Probity

  • Health.
