Summary
This chapter introduces the whole book explaining how the research project on which it was based was developed and why. It introduces readers the valley, Groruddalen, where the study took place and contextualises current and recent changes in Norwegian society as part of ever shifting globalised and cosmopolitan changes. It examines studies of learning beyond the individual and theoretical analysis of the relationship between context and identity. It explores studies of learning over time and the tradition of learning in the community. The tradition of bildung as a key part of the Norwegian education system is introduced. The rest of the chapter introduces each subsequent chapter of the book in detail
