Let X and Y be metrizable compact spaces and μ and v be nonzero continuous measures on X and Y, respectively. Then there is no bounded operator from the space of bimeasures BM(X, Y) onto the closed subspace of BM(X, Y) generated by L1 (μ X v); in particular, if X and Fare nondiscrete locally compact groups, then there is no bounded projection from BM(X, Y) onto the closed subspace of BM(X, Y) generated by L1(X X Y).

Similar techniques may be used to estimate other Kloosterman sums with oscillating coefficients which are not smooth.

The relationship between H-sets and open filter adhérences is considered. The open filter adhérences of an H-closed space are shown to be H-sets; and, a necessary and sufficient condition is given for an H-set S, of a Hausdorff space X, to be an open filter adherence. A necessary condition is determined for the existence of a minimal adherent set which contains S; and, in the case that X is H-closed, sufficient conditions are determined. As a related result, an H-closed space X is shown to be seminormal if every H-set of X possesses a neighborhood base consisting of regular open sets.

Given any homogeneous complex manifold X = G/H, there exists a natural coset map π :G/H → G/K satisfying π (X1) = π (x2) if and only if dx(x1 x2) = 0, where dx denotes the Kobayashi pseudometric on X. Its typical fiber Z : = K/H is a connected complex submanifold of X. Also G/K has a (7-invariant complex structure, provided K satisfies a certain technical assumption (see Theorem 3). If Z is compact as well, then G/K is biholomorphic to a homogeneous bounded domain.

A two dimensional system of differential equations with a finite number of discrete delays is considered. Conditions are derived for there to be no stability switching for arbitrary such delays.

Given a domain D in R” and two specified points P0 and P1 in D we consider the problem of minimizing u(p1) over all functions harmonic in D with values between 0 and 1 normalised by the requirement u(P0) = 1/2. We show that when D is suitably regular the problem has a unique solution u* which necessarily takes on boundary values 0 or 1 almost everywhere on the boundary. In the process we prove that it is possible to separate P0 and P1by a harmonic function whose boundary value is supported in an arbitrary set of positive measure. These results depend on the fact that (under suitable regularity conditions) a harmonic function which vanishes on an open subset of the boundary has a normal derivative which is almost everywhere non-vanishing in that set.

A well known result due to Dixmier and Grothendieck for spaces of continuous scalar-valued functions C(X), X compact Hausdorff, is that C(X) is a Banach dual if, and only if, Xis hyperstonean. Moreover, for hyperstonean X, the predual of C(X) is strongly unique. Here we obtain a formulation of this result for spaces of continuous vector-valued functions. It is shown that if E is a Hilbert space and C(X, (E, σ *) ) denotes the space of continuous functions on X to E when E is provided with its weak * ( = weak) topology, then C(X, (E, σ *) ) is a Banach dual if, and only if, X is hyperstonean. Moreover, for hyperstonean X, the predual of C(X, (E, σ *) ) is strongly unique.

Let I = [a, b] ⊆ R and let L be an nth order linear differential operator defined on Cn(I). Let 2 ≦ k ≦ n and let a ≦ x1 < x2 < … < xn = b. A method of forced mono tonicity is used to construct monotone sequences that converge to solutions of the conjugate type boundary value problem (BVP) Ly = f(x, y),y(i-1) = rij where 1 ≦i ≦ mj, 1 ≦ j ≦ k, mj = n, and f : I X R → R is continuous. A comparison theorem is employed and the method requires that the Green's function of an associated BVP satisfies certain sign conditions.

A definition of an isometric shift operator on a Banach space is given which extends the usual definition of a shift operator on a separable Hilbert space. It is shown that there is no such shift on many of the common Banach spaces of continuous functions. The associated ideas of a semi-shift and a backward shift are also introduced and studied in the case of continuous function spaces.

A well-known result of E. Lucas enables one to obtain the residue modulo p of in terms of the base-p digits of M and N. Using a recent result of P. W. Haggard and J. O. Kiltenen, a proof of N. J. Fine has been adapted to yield the corresponding residue modulo pr.

Let R be a ring which possesses a unit element, a Lie ideal U ⊄ Z, and a derivation d such that d(U) ≠ 0 and d(u) is 0 or invertible, for all u ∈ U. We prove that R must be either a division ring D or D2, the 2 X 2 matrices over a division ring unless d is not inner, R is not semiprime, and either 2R or 3R is 0. We also examine for which division rings D, D2 can possess such a derivation and study when this derivation must be inner.

Let f be a function in H∞. We show that if f is inner or if the commutant of the analytic Toeplitz operator Tf is equal to that of Tb for some finite Blaschke product b, then any analytic Toeplitz operator quasisimilar to Tf is unitarily equivalent to Tf.

A function theoretic proof of Axler's zero multiplier theorem of Bergman spaces is given.

The Bishop-Phelps theorem guarantees the existence of support points and support functionals for a nonempty closed convex subset of a Banach space; equivalently, it guarantees the existence of subdifferentials and points of subdifferentiability of a proper lower semicontinuous convex function on a Banach space. In this note we show that most of these results cannot be extended to pairs of convex sets or functions, even in Hilbert space. For instance, two proper lower semicontinuous convex functions need not have a common point of subdifferentiability nor need they have a subdifferential in common. Negative answers are also obtained to certain questions concerning density of support points for the closed sum of two convex subsets of Hilbert space.
