The thermodynamic cationic exchange process involving divalent (Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb and Ca) and monovalent (Na) cations in Brazilian red Latosol soil was studied. Using a batchwise method, the exchange was monitored as a function of the added cation concentration and the aqueous suspension of the soil at different temperatures. The isotherm series obtained were adjusted to a modified Langmuir equation, whose results were compared with the proposed Rawat method. The cationic exchange equilibria constants (ln K) vary from 1.97 to 9.80 for the Langmuir equation and 7.06 to 13.50 for the Rawat method. The variation in enthalpies obtained by applying the van't Hoff equation gave, for Langmuir and Rawat procedures, exothermic values for Cu (65.5 and 97.3), Cd (36.9 and 45.6) and Pb (43.0 and 50.7) kJ mol−1, and endothermic values for Zn (40.8 and 30.5), Hg (15.0 and 11.3), Ca (30.4 and 40.0) and Na (32.7 and 42.3) kJ moL−1. The exchanges proceed spontaneously, as indicated by the free energy values: Cu (14.2 and 27.2), Zn (21.6 and 32.0), Cd (16.1 and 23.2), Hg (13.8 and 22.9), Pb (22.6 and 28.3), Ca (17.0 and 25.9) and Na (9.9 and 19.3) kJ mol−1 at 323 K. These results suggest that the interaction occurs by complex formation between the organic matter of the soil matrix and the cations dispersed in aqueous solution.

This paper thoroughly describes the decomposition procedure, using the example of DECOMPXR (Lanson 1990). The steps of the decomposition procedure are: 1) preliminary data processing; 2) decomposition; 3) validation of results; and 4) use of the results. The use of decomposition is restricted to the separation of contributions from various phases. The effect of preliminary data processing steps (data smoothing, background stripping) on profile shape is shown to be limited and their implementation is detailed. Potential experimental limitations such as peak symmetry, experimental reproducibility or discrimination are equally minor. A logical decomposition process starts from the definition of the angular range to be fitted, proceeds with the determination of the number of elementary peaks to be fitted and ends with the check for results consistency.

Numerical data processing is a powerful tool for the accurate identification of monophases, because of the additional parameters available to constrain XRD profile simulation. Ultimately, however, the match over the whole angular range of both the experimental and the simulated patterns remains the only valid way to characterize the phases present in the sample. Additionally, the decomposition procedure permits both the identification of complex clay mineral assemblages and the characterization of their evolution. This step constrains, and may help to determine, the reaction mechanisms of a transformation; and, as a consequence, to characterize and to model the kinetics of this transformation.

Illite crystallinity and fluid inclusion techniques are used to understand the thermal histories of rocks on either side of the disconformity between the Lower and Upper Paleozoic strata in South Korea. Illite crystallinity studies show that the metamorphic grade of the upper strata of the Lower Paleozoic Joseon Supergroup, platform carbonates with subordinate siliciclastics, belongs to the epizone and that of the lowermost strata of the Upper Paleozoic Pyeongan Supergroup, paralic to nonmarine clastics, belongs to the anchizone. The maximum mode of homogenization temperature for fluid inclusion of the uppermost strata of the Joseon Supergroup is 260 to 270 °C and that of the lowermost strata of the Pyeongan Supergroup is 240 to 250 °C. These data reveal a difference in thermal histories of strata below and above the unconformity, suggesting that, in contrast to the previous supposition of a period of non-deposition, at least a 1-km thick section of sediment was removed by erosion during development of the unconformity. Burial and heat flux from a proposed hot spot are suggested as the dominant factors causing differences in a metamorphic grade for the Joseon Supergroup before the deposition of the Upper Paleozoic strata.

A large and representative collection of clay-size dioctahedral mica minerals differing in their chemical compositions has been studied by infrared (IR) spectroscopy in the OH stretching vibration region. Decomposition of the IR spectra in the individual OH bands has provided unambiguous identification of the band positions for each defined pair of octahedral cations bonded to OH groups. The presence of pyrophyllite-like local structural environments in samples having a deficiency of K in interlayers has been established. A set of the relationships between the OH frequencies corresponding to pairs of cations having different valency and mass has been found.

A new model for the interpretation of dioctahedral mica infrared (IR) spectra in the OH stretching vibration region is proposed. It is based on the analysis of the main factors responsible for the observed sequence of the OH frequencies. In terms of this model, the simple analytical dependence between the OH frequencies and the mass and valency of cations bonded to OH groups has been found. The specific character of the interaction between octahedral Al and OH groups in the mica structures is assumed.

Integrated optical densities of the OH bands determined by the decomposition of the studied mica IR spectra are used for the quantitative analysis, that is, for the determination of a number of each type of octahedral cations per unit cell of the sample under study. A good agreement between the octahedral cation contents of 2:1 layers found from the IR spectra decomposition and the chemical analysis has shown that this technique may be used to study the local order-disorder of isomorphous cation distribution in mica structures.

The essential result obtained by the quantitative analysis of the mica IR spectra is the determination of Fe3+ cations in the tetrahedral sites of some samples. This means that the conventional presentation of structural formulae for Al-Fe3+-containing 2:1 layer silicates is unacceptable without consideration of tetrahedral Fe3+ by spectroscopic techniques and by the quantitative analysis of the IR spectra, in particular.

A reservoir rock is a porous geological formation in contact with 2 liquids, brine and oil. An improved knowledge of rock wettability is of primary importance to estimate the amount of crude oil in underground resources. The petroleum industries have observed that wettability contrasts in sedimentary reservoir rocks are largely correlated to the presence of clays, illite and/or kaolinite in the rocks’ intergranular space.

More precisely, the grain surfaces of illite show a preference for brine. Kaolinite preferentially adsorbs oil, which imparts its hydrophobic characteristics to the mineral surface. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, we studied the adsorption process of asphaltenes in the presence of water at the microscopic level. We demonstrate experimentally that the wettability contrasts observed in kaolinite and illite are related to structural differences between these 2 clays, and we show the role of the grain surface hydroxyls. With clay materials, the purity of the samples is the most important limitation of the quantitative use of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS).

Phase and morphological changes during thermolysis of Mg4Al2(OH)12CO3·nH2O and Zn6Al2(OH)16CO3·nH2O layered double hydroxides (LDH) and their nanocomposites with poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) are studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron micrography (SEM and TEM) and thermal analyses. Mg4Al2(OH)12CO3·nH2O and Mg2Al(OH)6[CH2CH(C6H4SO3)]·3H2O show comparable thermal stabilities: the layered structure is lost above 300 °C with the nucleation of the MgO phase at approximately 400 °C and the MgAl2O4 phase at approximately 800 °C Zn3Al(OH)8[CH2CH(C6H4SO3)]·nH2O undergoes complete oxidative pyrolysis of the polyanion by 500 °C. Crystalline oxide products are obtained at a temperature approximately 300 °C lower than that of thermolysis of Zn6Al2(OH)16CO3·nH2O. The SEM and TEM images show that the thermolysis of LDH carbonates produces dense aggregates containing microcrystalline particles, whereas Mg2Al(OH)6[CH2CH(C6H4SO3)]·3H2O forms a macroporous solid.

The formation of layer silicates on capsuled bacterial cell walls was studied in freshwater microbial mats. The trends associated with Al, Si, Mn and Fe deposits with capsules are consistent with occurrence of layer silicates with 14, 10 and 7 Å X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. Scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope (SEM and TEM) observations of the microbial mats revealed the presence of microcolonies of rod- and coccus-shaped bacteria with layer-silicate thin films. Field measurements of pH, temperature and Eh indicated that these conditions for bacterial crystallization of layer silicates and hydrated Fe/Mn oxides in freshwaters are as follows: pH 6.3 to 7.8, 12 to 20 °C and Eh −24 to +200 mV. Glass slides kept for 3 weeks in the beakers with natural freshwater and river sediments were coated with brown materials. These materials were identified as layer silicates and colonized bacteria formed under photosynthetic conditions. The well-developed holdfasts on Leptothrix discophora bacterial cells are mainly associated with poorly crystalline layer silicates and hydrated Fe-Mn oxides. Semiquantitative elemental analyses of holdfasts using energy-dispersive X-rays (EDX) indicated that layer-silicate crystallization covers the cell at an early stage. Iron and manganese crystallization develops at a later stage, where aluminum substitution occurs in crystal structures. Laboratory experimental results indicated that layer silicates grew from a biochemical origin, rather than from inorganic origins in freshwater. Layer-silicate formation is linked with bacteria in microbial mats.

The adsorption-condensation of olefins was studied on 7 adsorbents: 2 commercial clays, a natural clay and its protonated form, γ-alumina and porous and nonporous silicas. These adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and determination of specific surface area measurement by the BET method. The experiments were carried out gravimetrically, in gas- or vapor-solid systems, at 25 °C and on adsorbents dried at 120 °C. Adsorption-condensation of olefins are fast processes, diffusion controlled. Alumina and silicas adsorb olefins and paraffins only reversibly, but are unable to condense olefins. The water polarized by the countercations is the source of Brønsted acid sites. When the gas phase is evacuated or swept with inert gas, the condensation terminates. On clays, paraffins are reversibly adsorbed but no condensation was observed.

The adsorption of olefins at 25 °C in gas- or vapor-solid systems on 4 clays dried at 120 °C was studied by infrared spectroscopy. Products of condensation have the spectra of paraffinic oligomers. Paraffins are adsorbed onto the same structural surface hydroxyls that adsorb olefins, confirming the physical unspecific character of this adsorption. These hydroxyls do not participate in the condensation reaction. The reappearance of these hydroxyl bands after evacuation suggests that product molecules are not adsorbed onto the surface but remain on it because of its low vapor pressure. The reversible adsorption sites participate in feeding the condensation sites. Double-bond isomerization of olefins was not observed, at room temperature, on clays, alumina and silicas dried at 120 °C. When the gas-phase is evacuated or swept with inert gas, reaction does not proceed with a new monomer. Paraffins are only physically adsorbed.

Yucca Mountain, Nevada, is being investigated to determine its suitability to host a potential high-level radioactive waste respository. An important reason for its choice as a potential repository site was the presence of thick zeolite-rich horizons in the altered volcanic tufts that compose the mountain. Clinoptilolite is the most abundant zeolite at Yucca Mountain and may be important in radionuclide retardation and in determining hydrologic properties. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the geochemical conditions affecting its long-term stability. For example, it has been suggested that long-term, repository-induced heating of the rocks at Yucca Mountain may lead to the transformation of clinoptilolite to analcime, thereby significantly affecting the hydrologic properties and retardation capabilities of the rock.

Thermodynamic modeling of clinoptilolite-analcime equilibria was conducted with the program Ge0-Calc PTA-SYSTEM using estimated thermodynamic data for measured chemical compositions of clinoptilolite and analcime at Yucca Mountain. Log[aK+)2/aCa2+] versus log[aNa+)2/aCa2+] diagrams were calculated to model the conditions under which clinoptilolite may transform to analcime. Temperature, relative cation abundances and silica activity are all important factors in determining clinoptilolite-analcime equilibria. Increased Na+ concentrations in either clinoptilolite or the fluid phase, increased clinoptilolite K+ concentration, increased temperature and decreased aqueous silica activity all stabilize analcime relative to clinoptilolite, assuming present-day Yucca Mountain water compositions. However, increased Ca2+ concentrations in either clinoptilolite or the fluid phase, increased aqueous K+ concentration and increased Al:Si ratios in clinoptilolite (heulandite) all stabilize clinoptilolite with respect to analcime.

Assuming well J-13 water as the analog chemistry for Yucca Mountain water, clinoptilolite should remain stable with respect to analcime if temperatures in the clinoptilolite-bearing horizons do not significantly exceed 100 °C. Even if temperatures rise significantly (for example, to 150 °C not all clinoptilolite should alter to analcime. Perhaps more importantly, thermodynamic modeling suggests that some Yucca Mountain clinoptilolites, particularly those rich in Ca and Al, will remain stable at elevated temperatures, even with an aqueous silica activity at quartz saturation.

There has been much interest in the rare specimen of beidellite from the Black Jack Mine, Florida Mountain, Idaho. A variety of aluminous clays exists along veins such as the Black Jack vein, in rhyolite and latite flows, and in near-surface ash beds, often containing less than 1.0% MgO and 0.5% Na20. Associated clays include beidellite, illite, kaolinite, 10-Å halloysite, dickite, nacrite, rectorite and a tarasovite-like mineral. The predominant clay is mixed-layer illite—beidellite. The beidellites have Al2O3 contents ranging from about 28 to 33%, and predominantly Ca and K as interlayer cations. The typical beidellite dehydroxylation temperatures of about 595 °C readily differentiate the beidellite from montmorillonite, which has a dehydroxylation temperature in the range of 735 °C. A modified differential thermal analysis (DTA) method is given for readily estimating the interlayer cation populations of smectites, including Mg++ and Al+++ cations. Chemical analyses and layer charges of II beidellites from mines around the Black Jack Mine are given. The beidellites have an American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) classification of CR, φ value, internal friction angle of about 8° and an expansion pressure of about 9 kgf/cm2 (88.3 kPa), similar to that of nontronite.

A thorough understanding of the capacity of clay minerals to adsorb radiocesium is essential in order to predict the fate of this pollutant in the environment and to interpret routine measurements, such as desorbability. We have investigated the adsorption of radiocesium onto 2 contrasting reference clay minerals in dilute suspensions after a 2-h contact period. The results have been expressed as the distribution coefficient, Kd, or the selectivity coefficient, Kc. The adsorption properties have been studied with respect to various parameters: nature of the charge compensating cation, ionic strength, concentration of Cs, concentration of K and concentration of a soil-extracted fulvic acid.

A Freundlich isotherm has been found to fit experimental data well for levels of adsorbed cesium in the range 10−7 to 1 mol kg−1. Evidence of surface heterogeneity is discussed, but it was not possible to deduce the exchange capacities of the groups of exchange sites with differing affinities for Cs, which are thought to exist in illites. The concentration dependence of adsorption upon montmorillonite is postulated to arise from a modification of the exchange complex with increasing presence of Cs, rather than from heterogeneity of exchange sites. Increasing ionic strength caused a decrease in the relative affinity for a trace amount of cesium on both minerals, although mass action led to a fall in Kd. This is thought to indicate a high covalent interaction between Cs and the clay surface.

Potassium caused a smaller decrease in adsorption than stable Cs, which suggests that neither K nor NH4 plays a decisive role in the immobilization of radiocesium by clay minerals. There was a small decrease in adsorption upon addition of soil organic matter, which may contribute to the poor fixation capacity observed for some soils with a high organic matter content.

This study characterizes various chemical and mineralogical properties of goethite and jarosite from a mine drainage environment using chemical extraction techniques, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Goethite and jarosite precipitates were collected from leachate-contaminated soils and from groundwater samples that were stored for up to 3 y. The results indicate that the soil goethites have primarily microcrystalline morphologies with moderately large mean crystallite dimensions (MCD110 ∼ 40 nm), and are superparamagnetic at room temperature and magnetically ordered at 77 K. The substitution of Al for Fe in the goethites is less than 0.03 mol/mol, and there is consequently no measured contraction in the goethite unit cell volume. The jarosite unit cell dimensions, Mössbauer parameters and chemical compositions indicate that the precipitates are primarily well-crystallized K-Na-H3O solid solutions, although the presence of poorly crystalline H3O-rich jarosite is also identified in one sample.

Along the inner Coastal Plain, kaolinite-metahalloysite-rich, neritic muds of Cretaceous-Eocene age have undergone intense postdepositional alteration in the recharge area of the regional groundwater system. Weathering processes have had the following profound effects on the original sediments: 1) strong compositional and textural modification of both clay and non-clay minerals; 2) whitening of the originally darker sediments by partial removal of organic matter, Fe and Mn; and 3) recrystallization of kaolinite and metahalloysite, most conspicuous where there are coarse stacks and vermiforms. Where the combination of initial sediment composition and alteration intensity was most favorable, these changes have produced important deposits of commercial quality, which now sustain the world's largest kaolin production district. The earliest change was partial sequestration of iron as sulfide and concurrent destruction of some organic matter, mediated by sulfate-reducing bacteria. Subsequent weathering resulted in gradual leaching of alkalies, alkaline earths, iron and silica, and attendant nucleation and growth of minerals compatible with the compositional changes. The existence of several closely spaced erosional unconformities, separated by neritic sediments, is proof that weathering conditions commonly changed at a given site, in response to changes in thickness or lithology of the overlying rocks. Dsyoxic → ← oxic reversals modified both the rate and kind of alteration. (“Dysoxic” refers to molecular oxygen concentration too low to be toxic to anaerobes or cause abiotic oxidation; less extreme than “anoxic”.) Kaolins were produced partly by slower dysoxic weathering in saturated groundwater zones but mainly by more rapid oxic weathering in unsaturated zones, where bauxites also locally formed. Gradual transformation of some sediments to kaolin rarely began and ended in the same epoch. At several places most of the kaolinization (see “Definitions”) took place during Recent time, tens of millions of years after deposition of the sediments. Since the kaolins resulted from postdepositional alteration rather than sedimentary processes, they are better referred to as “Coastal Plain” rather than “sedimentary” kaolins.
