A prototype robot for picking citrus is described which utilized real-time, color machine vision to vision-servo the robot on a targeted fruit. A programming technique is presented which simplified development of the task-level, robot control program. An economic evaluation of robotic harvesting in Florida determined that robotic harvesting would be approximately 50 percent more expensive than conventional hand harvesting. Harvest inefficiency was identified as the most influential factor affecting robotic harvesting economics. Field trial performance is summarized and the potential of commercial robotic harvesting discussed.

The heavy reliance which New Zealand places on its primary industries makes it important that every effort be made to automate these industries to improve their productivity. This presents many unique problems, especially when consideration is given to the use of robots in the horticultural sector for the handling of soft fruit for export. As part of this process, fruit must be individually packed in trays without the risk of damage. This is currently achieved through labour-intensive manual handling and for this reason a range of specialised robot grippers have been developed. These, to varying degrees, overcome many of the problems associated with the harsh handling which occurs when conventional industrial robot grippers are used.

This paper presents the findings of a research programme leading to the development of a robotic system for packaging poultry portions. The results show that an integrated system, incorporating machine vision and robots, can be made feasible for industrial use. The elements of this system, including the end-effector, the vision module, the robot hardware and the system software are presented. Models and algorithms for automatic recognition and handling of poultry portions are discussed.

Prawns are a significant marine resource in Australia and elsewhere, but their processing after the harvest is a very labour-intensive operation. Every prawn is presently hand packed. The possibility of utilising machine vision and robots to automate this operation has been investigated. Experiments indicate that machine vision can classify prawns into mass-related categories better than people now do, and that prawn orientation can be determined by this means. Although at the present state of technology it appears infeasible for robots to make up the multi-layer fixed-weight packs of prawns as is now done manually, a change to single-layer variable-weight packs should allow this process to be automated and would offer significant advantages to the Australian industry.

Initial development of a robotic meat cutting system based on force feedback control and continuous path planning is described. Forequarter beef cutting is attempted where each carcass processed will be compared to a database containing cut information for previously processed beef carcasses. Using the database information, cut start and end points can be defined along with initial path direction for each cut. A robot then drives a powered knife through the carcass utilising force feedback control to follow bone profiles, thus removing meat from the forequarter. An original cutting scheme suitable for robotic butchery of a beef forequarter is defined, along with a notation scheme for describing the cutting procedures.

Attaching the milking machine to the cow is the last remaining major repetitive task that the worker in a modern milking parlour has to perform. Several groups of research workers are developing robotic systems for this purpose. The task for the robot of locating the cow's teats and attaching the machine is complicated by morphological differences between cows and the need to allow the cow freedom to move during the operation. This paper reviews the progress that has been made.

This paper describes the research activities at the Laboratory for Control Systems and Automation (LCA) which is a section of the Production Department of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). LCA's research activities are focused on providing fundamental technologies to cope with the current trends in manufacturing automation. The R & D activities at the laboratory cover diverse areas. The research activities at the laboratory are classified into three sections—robotics and automation, fluid servo control, and manufacturing process control. Detailed explanations are given here on robotics and its application to automation. As a laboratory belonging to a nation's leading educational institution, LCA also conducts active educational activities. Such educational programs are also introduced in detail.

The dynamics modeling and payload adaptability of a light-weight flexible one-link manipulator are studied. Using the FEM (Finite-Element Method) model of a flexible manipulator, a lower order Linear Quadratic Gaussian compensator can provide satisfactory performance without controller/observer spillover. Moreover, the payload can be separated from the beam model, therefore, it is expected that the identification algorithm should have better robustness than the other schemes. The simulation results have shown that the proposed payload-adaptation synthesizer, which synthesizes a payload identifier and a nominal regulator/estimator interpolator to obtain a near-optimal compensator, has good adaptability with varying payload. And the resulting synthesizer also provides a near-optimal damping for this sensor-actuator noncolocated system.

This paper addresses the conceptual design of direct-drive manipulators which have good promise for high speed, high precision manipulation. In the design methodology presented, the procedure begins by considering the kinematic aspects and ends by configuring manipulator structures with promising kinematic and dynamic characteristics. Based on the conceptual design considerations, a novel 3 DOF (RRR) direct-drive manipulator is proposed and analyzed. The manipulator structure has only five links and a compact configuration. Manipulator kinematics and dynamics are analyzed. Design guidelines are derived for static balancing of the manipulator and for minimizing the inertias driven by the motors. Operational configurations that either improve or worsen the kinematic and dynamic behaviour or characteristics of the manipulator are identified. The proposed design has an advantage over many currently known direct-drive manipulators for achieving two desirable mechanical features, namely: static balancing and compactness (smaller driven inertias).

A two-dimensional serial-driven manipulator is compared with two different parallel-driven manipulators, using workspace, power requirements and stiffness as criteria. The parallel-driven devices are based on the planar five-bar linkage; one has four revolute joints and one prismatic joint; the other has five revolute joints. Parallel operation is shown to offer advantages.
