Rapid rates of species range extension during the Holocene represent seed dispersal distances of at least 6 to 8 km per generation for North American species of Fagus, Quercus, and Carya, taxa whose fruits are heavy nuts. Occasional seed dispersal by biotic seed predators is necessary for these dispersal distances. One likely agent for dispersal across long distances and habitat discontinuities was the extinct (since 1914 A.D.) passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius). This bird's abundance, capacity for delayed digestion, and nomadic habits strongly suggest an occasional seed dispersal role, although a coevolutionary seed dispersal relationship cannot be inferred from available evidence. The capacity of some heavy seeds for dispersal distances greater than those of most light, wind-dispersed seeds has biogeographic and genetic implications.

Published oxygen isotope results from benthic and planktonic foraminifera are used to constrain the extent to which surface ocean temperatures in the tropics changed between glacial and interglacial time. The possible impacts of bioturbation and of the redistribution of 18O/16O ratios within the sea, putting aside the oxygen isotope results, are consistent with the CLIMAP project conclusion that tropical ocean temperatures remained within ±2°C of their present value.

Two marine pollen diagrams for sediments off the southwest coast of India provide a 20,000-yr history of the nearby continental vegetation, determined by the monsoon climate, within the framework of the isotopic stratigraphy. Two important phases of the evolution of the monsoon climate are a very arid period about 22,000–18,000 yr B.P. and a very humid period culminating at 11,000 yr B.P. The very arid period corresponds to the lowest pollen representation of mangrove vegetation, which is used here as an indirect indicator of monsoonal runoff. This aridity is due to a very weak southwest airflow, a great reduction of summer monsoonal rainfall, and reduced runoff of the western Ghats rivers. The extension of the monsoon over India after the last glacial maximum has been a gradual process following the northward progression of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. The very humid period, corresponding to the highest pollen representation of mangrove vegetation and the heaviest summer rainfall, is a climatic response to the maximum summer insolation of the Northern Hemisphere at 11,000 yr B.P.

Radiocarbon datings of the Saksunarvatn ash bed on the Faroe Islands indicate an age of 9000–9100 yr B.P. The Saksunarvatn ash bed differs geochemically from both ash zone 1 in the North Atlantic and the Vedde Ash Bed of Norway and the Norwegian Sea. All mentioned ashes are assumed to originate from Iceland. The Vedde Ash has been dated at 10,600 ± 60 yr B.P. Consequently, the Saksunarvatn and Vedde ash beds provide an opportunity for precise dating of events around the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary in marine cores, especially from the region where the two plumes overlap.

The gomphothere, Stegomastodon, is the most morphologically progressive non-elephant proboscidean in North America. Prior to the appearance of mammoths during the earliest Pleistocene, stegomastodonts held niches later occupied by those elephants. Two proboscidean specimens from near Taylor, Arizona, show that elephant-like Stegomastodon coexisted with Mammuthus in the southwestern United States during the Quaternary. Other associations of Stegomastodon and Mammuthus are known from the early and middle Pleistocene of Texas and the early Pleistocene of Nebraska. The mammoth from the Taylor locality is the oldest known from Arizona.

Biostatistical analysis of modern pollen assemblages in 152 Japanese surface samples shows that Cryptomeria japonica can normally grow in areas with a mean January temperature of approximately −7° to 7°C, a mean August temperature of 19° to 27°C, and an effective precipitation (total precipitation during the growing season) of over 1000 mm. The full-glacial distribution of the species on both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific coasts (35–36°N lat) indicates that in these areas the maximum possible reduction of temperature was 8.7–10.2°C in January and 6.0–7.3°C in August, and that the effective precipitation was low, being 1000–1350 mm, or 40–55% below the modern level, provided that the species has not changed its physiological characteristics. Populations of C. japonica expanded northward and upslope from their full-glacial areas of distribution immediately after late-glacial climatic amelioration. This expansion appears to have been regulated mainly by the availability of effective precipitation which became high in northeastern Honshu about 4000 yr ago. After about 2500 yr B.P., C. japonica was planted extensively by humans in moist, temperate climatic regions (excluding Hokkaido), and now has its widest distribution since at least the last full-glacial interval.

The relationship between carnassial length and latitude south is analyzed for 17 African carnivore species to determine if individuals tend to be larger in cooler climates, as predicted by Bergmann's Rule. With modern data in support, middle and late Quaternary temperatures might then be inferred from mean carnassial length in fossil samples, such as those from Equus Cave, Elandsfontein, Sea Harvest. Duinefontein, and Swartklip in the Cape Province of South Africa. One problematic aspect of the study is the use of carnassial length and latitude as necessary but imperfect substitutes for body size and temperature, respectively. For some species, another difficulty is the relatively small number of available modern specimens, combined with their uneven latitudinal spread. Still, in 14 of the species, carnassial length does tend to increase with latitude south, while mean carnassial length in the same species tends to be greater in those fossil samples which accumulated under relatively cool conditions, as inferred from sedimentologic, palynological, or geochemical data. Given larger modern samples from a wide variety of latitudes, refinement of the mathematical relationship between carnassial length and latitude in various species may even permit quantitative estimates of past temperatures in southern Africa.

Light rings are characterized by one or a very few latewood-cell layers, an indication of shortened growing seasons, and are particularly frequent in black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) at the treeline in Québec. The construction of a light-ring chronology spanning the period AD 1398–1982 showed that the highest frequency (>25%) of light rings among 160 trees and krummholz occurred in 1593, 1620, 1634, 1784, 1816, 1817, 1853, 1969, and 1972. These diagnostic rings be a useful cross-dating tool for dendroecologists working with living and dead krummholz with a low-growth variability. About two-thirds of the 65 light-ring years coincide with years (or triads) of major volcanic eruptions. The climatic conditions (low temperature) occurring at the end of the growing season, in part induced by the climatic effect of volcanism, seem to initiate light rings.
