The use of natural materials in paper and textiles, and in support of tunable and mechanically robust systems for sensing toxic gases, removing pollutants from water, and constructing functional biodegradable scaffolds, is a topic of great scientific and practical importance. The social, environmental, and economic impact of using natural materials to functionalize integrated systems for new designs is imperative, as the need to reuse and recycle natural resources has increased in current manufacturing. The inclusion of sustainability in the design of new materials and processes is almost a common practice; concurrently, the usage of “being more sustainable” is becoming a more conjointly used term in urban conversations. That said, systems integration and natural materials are intrinsically related to produce novel materials that can function as sensors, switches, platforms, and building blocks in a sustainable fashion. The contributions in this issue of MRS Bulletin highlight the importance and benefits to society that systems integration of functional materials can provide.

The two current reigning paradigms enabling nanotechnology are scanning probe microscopy and molecular machine devices that date back to seminal experiments by Eigler and visionary work by Drexler, respectively. The nanoscience and nanotechnology community is seeing the emergence of a third paradigm—the use of the atomically focused beam of a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) to control and direct matter on the atomic scale. Beam-induced modifications involving one atom or a small group of atoms can be induced and monitored in real time with atomic resolution. Combined with the development of beam-control electronics, big data acquisition, and analytical tools such as artificial intelligence-based feedback systems, electron and ion microscopies are at the brink of a transition from purely imaging tools to tools capable of creating structures with atomic precision and high throughput. In this issue of MRS Bulletin, we present recent advances in electron- and ion-beam-based atomic fabrication on surfaces, in layered materials, and finally in three dimensions—the ultimate dream and possibly the final frontier of nanoscience.

Pressure is a key parameter in manufacturing, physical sciences, and life sciences in defining the state of matter. In this issue of MRS Bulletin, we focus on several of the many and diverse domains of advanced materials research where applied pressure (or stress) is used to alter, or otherwise garner information on, material properties. We give an overview of research in which the application of high pressure—often combined with high temperatures and advanced analysis—has led to technological progress, such as in the preparation of superhard materials, in discovering new chemistry for dense forms of low-Z elements, and in the interplay and mimicking of chemical-induced versus pressure-induced structural and electronic changes to prepare new magnetic and energy materials. In addition, the response of materials such as glasses and perovskites to high-stress conditions is discussed, where pressures in the gigapascal regime can easily be achieved in everyday usage. Finally, the structural, dynamical, and phase behavior of biological systems under pressure is explored.

This issue of MRS Bulletin focuses on materials that enable nanofluidic systems with unusually high mass fluxes, termed “enhancement factor” or “slip flow.” There is now ample evidence of such flow enhancement in nanochannels, with sizes ranging from subnanometer to a few nanometers. Most of the studies to date, both experimental and modeling, have focused on carbon nanotubes and, more recently, on graphene. Different fabrication methods result in different structures, surface chemistries, and defects, with a significant effect on flow enhancement. As new one-dimensional and two-dimensional nanomaterials are synthesized, a deeper understanding of the nanoscale transport physics is needed, particularly in the relationship between material properties and flow behavior. Herein, authors at the forefront of experimental, modeling, and theoretical developments in nanofluidic flow describe the state of the art in materials development and characterization.

Electron emission represents the key mechanism enabling the development of devices that have revolutionized modern science and technology. Today, science still relies on advanced electron-emission devices for imaging, electronics, sensing, and high-energy physics. New generations of emission devices are continuously being improved based on innovative materials and the introduction of novel physical concepts. Recent advances are highlighted by emerging low-work-function and low-dimensional materials with unusual electronic and thermal properties. Nanotubes, nanowires, graphene, and electron-emission models are discussed in this issue, as well as original mechanisms, such as the thermoelectronic effect, thermionic emission, and heat trap processes. Advances in electron-emission materials and physics are driving a renaissance in the field, both opening up new applications, such as energy conversion and ultrafast electronics, as well as improving traditional applications in electron imaging and high-energy science.

The development of new materials and improvements of existing ones are at the root of the spectacular recent developments of new technologies for synchrotron storage rings and free-electron laser sources. This holds true for all relevant application areas, from electron guns to undulators, x-ray optics, and detectors. As demand grows for more powerful and efficient light sources, efficient optics, and high-speed detectors, an overview of ongoing materials research for these applications is timely. In this article, we focus on the most exciting and demanding areas of materials research and development for synchrotron radiation optics and detectors. Materials issues of components for synchrotron and free-electron laser accelerators are briefly discussed. The articles in this issue expand on these topics.

We provide an overview of the field of rigidity theory applied at the atomic scale. This theoretical approach, initially designed for macroscopic structures such as bridges or buildings, has gained renewed interest in the past few years thanks to new methodological developments and to attractive applications in a variety of materials, such as scratch-resistant glassy sheets for mobile phones, phase-change memory, tough cement, dielectrics, and photonic devices. In parallel, basic phenomena associated with the onset of rigidity have been discovered, which have challenged our current understanding of the structural modification induced by changes in composition. This has led to the identification of “smart” glasses with multiple functionalities and superior mechanical performances. Topological prediction and engineering of physical properties are also enabling intelligent design of new disordered materials.

Nanocarbons, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, have had a remarkable history and impact on current applications. We briefly review the genesis and development of nanocarbons over the last 50 years, referencing key articles, including the role of catalysts in their formation. This issue focuses on the formation mechanisms and controlled growth of carbon nanotubes and graphene on substrates through catalytic processes. The five contributions in this issue review the mechanisms and theory of catalytic growth of nanocarbons (carbon nanotube forests, superaligned arrays, single-wall carbon nanotubes), the growth of large-quantity, high-quality graphene on metal substrates, and the unique and excellent properties for current and potential commercial applications.

Manufacturing has historically followed a mass production approach due to economies of scale and the engineering challenges of large-scale customization, leading to a one-size-fits-all paradigm. This manufacturing-centric approach has forced consumers and patients to adapt to medical devices in terms of anatomical fit and biological performance, often significantly decreasing their quality of life. In order to improve the biological interface with the human body, the materials science and bioengineering communities are rapidly adopting three-dimensional (3D) printing, which promises high precision, automation, and a customized fit. However, numerous design and engineering constraints, many posed by the fragile nature of living cells and soft gels, suggest exciting opportunities for further research in materials synthesis, characterization, and integration. Specifically, materials innovations in bioinks and support materials, coupled with improved 3D bioprinting processes for multiple materials, have the potential to empower the next generation of biology by enabling precision engineered tissues, organoids, and eventually whole organs.

DNA nanotechnology is a materials design paradigm in which synthetic nucleic acids are used to program the structure and dynamics of nanometer-scale devices and materials. Driven by the convergence of decreasing DNA synthesis costs, advanced yet easy-to-use computational design and analysis tools, and, most importantly, a myriad of innovative studies demonstrating DNA’s extraordinary power to organize functional materials, DNA nanotechnology is spreading into diverse areas of traditional materials science. To further promote the integration of DNA nanotechnology into materials science, this issue of MRS Bulletin provides an overview of the unique capabilities offered by DNA nanotechnology, a set of practical techniques that make it accessible to a broad audience, and a vision for its future applications, described by international leaders in the field.

Stretchable and ultraflexible electronic devices have a broad range of potential uses, from robust devices for energy storage and conversion to biomedical devices that make conformal interfaces with the skin and internal organs. Organics have long been associated with mechanical compliance, which enables inexpensive manufacturing via roll-to-roll printing. This article provides an overview of the use of organic electronic materials, including π-conjugated polymers and small molecules, in highly deformable devices. It begins with a comparison of devices based on organic devices to those based on inorganic composites. The thin-film nature of organic semiconductor devices has also led to the development of several techniques for metrology that can be applied specifically to brittle organic thin films. The article concludes with a brief discussion of the applications of stretchable and ultraflexible organic electronic devices and a prescriptive outlook for successful collaborative work in this exciting, interdisciplinary field.

Materials designed and engineered for technical applications must invariably meet or exceed multiple key specifications. Even if commercial realization is not intended, scientific interest is piqued if a challenging combination of properties is achieved, particularly if they are mutually exclusive for certain classes of materials. For example, the combination of mechanical toughness, chemical durability, and high thermal-shock resistance, with pore-free, smooth, aesthetically beautiful surfaces simultaneously realized in certain glasses that are crystallized in a controlled manner—glass-ceramics—have enabled two distinct, decades-long applications, cookware and flat cooktop panels. Other special glass-ceramic materials have been developed for electronic, photonic, dental, and biomedical applications. No other class of material could combine these properties in such an advantageous and economically feasible manner. This issue highlights six very different innovative applications of glass-ceramics, all of which owe their importance and continuing interest to “hard-to-combine” properties.

It is well recognized that hydrostatic pressure loading can significantly affect the mechanical properties of solids. One of the strongest effects of pressure is the increase in elastic properties of solids. In this article, we address the effect of high pressure on plastic properties through typical examples of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on dislocation core properties of solids.

The design, properties, and applications of transparent glass-ceramics are reviewed. Interference effects in light scattering by transparent glass-ceramics are discussed. The scattering coefficient of transparent glass-ceramics is found to be significantly less than that for the case of independent Rayleigh scattering by nanocrystals; its wavelength dependence is qualitatively different. A reduction in interference effects achieved by precipitation of nanocrystals of different crystalline phases with different scattering properties results in glass-ceramics with high diffuse reflection. The origin of the low coefficient of thermal expansion of glass-ceramics is discussed based on the temperature dependence of the unit cell parameters of β-quartz solid solutions measured by in situ high-temperature x-ray diffraction. Transparent glass-ceramics doped with Co2+ and Ni2+ ions for thermal shock-resistant color filters, for broadband near-infrared (IR) optical amplifiers, and for passive Q-switching of eye-safe Er lasers are presented. Glass-ceramics with rare-earth titanates, titanates-zirconates, and niobates in dual roles of nucleators and active crystals are reviewed.

Electronics are evolving from “brittle” to “flexible” and are expected to advance to “stretchable.” Development of stretchable semiconductor materials is a key step for the realization of highly deformable transistors. This article introduces the technological strategies for achieving stretchable polymer semiconductors, including a geometrical approach, formation of a nanofibril network, microcrack formation, and synthesis of new polymers. We conclude with perspectives on further development of stretchable polymer semiconductors.

The nature of glass transitions in chalcogenides and modified oxides depends on the network mean coordination number $\langle r\rangle$ . These display systematic trends when spanning across the three topological phases: flexible, intermediate, and stressed-rigid. Trends in the glass-transition temperature T g( $\langle r\rangle$ ) show a monotonic increase with $\langle r\rangle$ , but the nonreversing enthalpy of relaxation at T g, ΔH nr( $\langle r\rangle$ ), shows a deep- and square-well-like minimum with the walls representing the rigidity and stress transitions with increasing $\langle r\rangle$ , respectively. In the well, the ΔH nr( $\langle r\rangle$ ) term remains minuscule (∼0) corresponding to the isostatically rigid intermediate phase (IP). The melt fragility index (m) shows rather low values, m( $\langle r\rangle$ ) < 20 for IP compositions, but increases outside the IP. Glass compositions in the IP show absence of network stress, form compacted networks, possess thermally reversing glass transitions, and display high glass-forming tendency—functionalities that have attracted widespread interest in understanding the physics of glasses and applications of the new IP formed.

The correction of aberrations in the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) has simultaneously improved both spatial and temporal resolution, making it possible to capture the dynamics of single atoms inside materials, and resulting in new insights into the dynamic behavior of materials. In this article, we describe the different beam–matter interactions that lead to atomic excitations by transferring energy and momentum. We review recent examples of sequential STEM imaging to demonstrate the dynamic behavior of single atoms both within materials, at dislocations, at grain and interface boundaries, and on surfaces. We also discuss the effects of such dynamic behavior on material properties. We end with a summary of ongoing instrumental and algorithm developments that we anticipate will improve the temporal resolution significantly, allowing unprecedented insights into the dynamic behavior of materials at the atomic scale.

Carbon materials exist in a large number of allotropic forms and exhibit a wide range of physical and chemical properties. From the perspective of fluidics, particularly within the confines of the nanoscale afforded by one-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and two-dimensional graphene structures, many unique properties have been discovered. However, other questions, such as the link between electronic states and hydrodynamics and accurate model predictions of transport, remain unanswered. Theoretical studies, experiments in large-scale ensembles of CNTs and stacked graphene sheets, and precise measurements at the single-pore and single-molecule level have helped in our understanding. These activities have led to explosive growth in the field, now known as carbon nanofluidics. The ability to produce membranes and devices from fluid phases of graphene oxide, which retain these special properties in molecular-scale flow channels, promises realization of applications in the near term.

Nanocarbons have been catalytically grown since 1993. However, even today, the formation mechanisms of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene are not sufficiently understood. This sustained challenge has been an engine for the development in theory concepts and computational methods, tackling the problem of well-controlled production of these nanomaterials. This article discusses how experimental discoveries and theoretical approaches evolved hand-in-hand for the successful understanding of challenging issues, highlighting parallels and distinctions between graphene and CNTs. Key aspects include the mechanisms of nucleation and CNT-liftoff, chiral symmetry selection and control, rates of growth and island shapes, mechanisms defining single chirality of the nanotubes, and ways to suppress grain boundaries in the quest for ever larger and faster growing single-crystal graphene, or longest defect-free CNTs. The theme of catalyst chemistry and structure, either as a nanoparticle or a planar substrate, is traced through the stages of nanocarbon formation, with focus on theoretically generalizable findings.

Bioprinting, the three-dimensional (3D) printing of cell-laden inks, will be a truly revolutionary technology for the biomaterials community. The number of bioink studies, especially aimed at functional tissues, remains significantly limited, and furthermore, current bioinks are limited by a narrow window of printability. This can be largely attributed to the fact that the preparation of bioinks and their 3D printing is significantly complicated by the presence of cells, which require strict conditions for their viability. This article discusses how cells should be considered during bioink synthesis, 3D printing, and post-printing processing. We also discuss what has been reported thus far with regard to the relationships between bioink material properties and cells. This underlines the need for next-generation bioinks that simultaneously achieve excellent printability, high cell viability, and a wide range of material properties.
