This paper describes an extension of the SDM scheme introduced by Priestley (1980) to the problem of the identification of non-linear systems using only input/output records. It is shown that, under quite general assumptions on the structure of the system, it is possible to identify a non-linear relationship between the input and output processes via a modified version of the Kalman-type algorithm previously applied to the study of non-linear time series models. The paper includes a numerical study of data generated from various types of non-linear systems.

In a homogeneous Poisson process in Rd, consider an arbitrary point X and let Y be its kth nearest neighbour. Denote by Rk the rank of X in the proximity order defined by Y, i.e., Rk = j if X is the jth nearest neighbour to Y. A representation for Rk in terms of a sum of independent random variables is obtained, and the limiting distribution of Rk, as k →∞, is shown to be normal. This result generalizes to mixtures of Poisson processes.

This note gives estimates of solutions to the Sylvester problem in three dimensions. These results suggest that the solutions in four and higher dimensions are very close to the solution for the n -dimensional sphere which is known.

Processors handling multi-class traffic typically alternate between serving a particular class of traffic and performing other tasks, e.g., secondary service tasks or routine maintenance. The stochastic behavior of such systems is modeled by a newly introduced class of Bernoulli GI/G/1 vacation models. For this model, when a vacation is completed and customers are present, a customer is served. When a customer has just been served and other customers are present, the server accepts a customer with fixed probability p or commences a vacation of prespecified random duration with probability 1 – p. Whenever no customers are present, a vacation is taken. When p = 0 or p = 1 this schedule reduces to the previously introduced single service schedule and the exhaustive service schedule, respectively. An analysis of all three schedules on a state space incorporating server vacations is presented using simple methods in the complex plane. It is shown that the recent decomposition results for exhaustive service extend to the more general class of Bernoulli schedules.

Falin (1984) examined the quasi-input process (the flow of service starting times) in the M/G/1/∞ queue and raised the question as to whether this process is a renewal process. We show that, except in the trivial case of instantaneous service, the quasi-input process is never renewal.

The model Y(t) = s(t | θ) + ε(t) is studied in the case that observations are made at scattered points τ j in a subset of Rp and θ is a finite-dimensional parameter. The particular cases of 0 = (α, β) and (α, β, ω) are considered in detail. Consistency and asymptotic normality results are developed assuming that the spatial series ε(·) and the point process {τ j} are independent, stationary and mixing. The estimates considered are equivalent to least squares asymptotically and are not generally asymptotically efficient.

Contributions of the paper include: study of the Rp case, management of irregularly placed observations, allowance for abnormal domains of observation and the discovery that aliasing complications do not arise when the point process {τ j} is mixing. There is a brief discussion of the construction and properties of maximum likelihood estimates for the spatial-temporal case.

We examine a continuous search model in which rewards (e.g. job offers in a search model in the labor market, price offers for a given asset, etc.) are received randomly according to a renewal process determined by a known distribution function. The rewards are non-negative independent and have a common distribution with finite mean. Over the search period there is a constant cost per unit time. The searcher's objective is to choose a stopping time at which he receives the highest available reward (offer), so as to maximize the net expected discounted return. If the interarrival time distribution in the renewal process is new better than used (NBU), it is shown that the optimal stopping strategy possesses the control limit property. The term ‘control limit policy' refers to a strategy in which we accept the first reward (offer) which exceeds a critical control level ξ.

Let X1, · ··, Xn, n ≧ 2 be i.i.d. random variables having a geometric distribution, and let Y1 ≦ Y2 ≦ · ·· ≦ Yn denote the corresponding order statistics. Define Rn = Yn – Y1 and Zn = Σj=2n (Υj – Y1). Then it is well known that (i) Y, and Rn are independent and (ii) Y1 and Zn are independent. In this paper, we show that a very weak form of each of these independence properties is a characterizing property of the geometric distribution in the class of discrete distributions.

It is demonstrated that linear parametrization of the conditional intensity provides systematic classes of flexible models which are reasonably useful for calculating maximum likelihoods. To exemplify the modelling, seismic activity around Canberra is decomposed into components of evolutionary trend, clustering and periodicity. The causal relationship between earthquake sequences from two seismic regions is also analysed for a certain Japanese earthquake data set.

Some technical aspects of the modelling and calculations are described.

The effect of a binomial time change on a given Markov chain is studied. Results are obtained for the hitting times, potential operator, and transience and recurrence properties of the time-changed chain. The limiting behavior is considered as the binomial parameter approaches 0 and the time variable approaches∞.

Denoting by v(t) the residual life of a component in a renewal process, Çinlar and Jagers (1973) and Holmes (1974) have shown that if E(v(t)) is independent of t for all t, then the process is Poisson. In this note we prove, under mild conditions, that if E(G(v(t))) is constant, then the process is Poisson. In particular if E((v(t))r) for some specific real number r ≧ 1 is independent of t, then the process is Poisson.

An exponential martingale is defined for a class of random walks in the positive quarter lattice which are associated with a wide variety of Markovian two-queue networks. Balance formulas generalizing Wald's exponential identity are derived from the regularity of several types of hitting times with respect to this martingale. In a queuing context, these formulas can be interpreted as functional relations of practical interest between the number of customers at certain epochs and the utilization of the queues up to these epochs.

Approximation expressions for the server utilization factor of each server in a heterogeneous-server G/G/n queueing loss system with ordered entry are derived. The system is assumed to face a stationary counting process. Service times are generally distributed with possibly different service rates. The numerical results from this approximation method are then compared with those from a simulation study.

An almost sure convergence result for the normed population size of a bisexual population model is proved. Properties of the limit random variable are deduced. The derivation of similar results for a general class of such processes is discussed.

For a sample of points drawn uniformly from either the d-dimensional torus or the d-cube, d ≧ 2, we give limiting distributions for the largest of the nearest-neighbor links. For d ≧ 3 the behavior in the torus is proved to be different from the behavior in the cube. The results given also settle a conjecture of Henze (1982) and throw light on the choice of the cube or torus in some probabilistic models of computational complexity of geometrical algorithms.

The concept of strong mixing is used to obtain a generalization of results on the asymptotic distribution of finite-parameter estimates of linear processes and extend them for stationary sequences and random fields.
