We prove that there is a residual subset 𝒮 in Diff1(M) such that, for every f∈𝒮, any homoclinic class of f containing saddles of different indices (dimension of the unstable bundle) contains also an uncountable support of an invariant ergodic non-hyperbolic (one of the Lyapunov exponents is equal to zero) measure of f.

The period doubling renormalization operator was introduced by Feigenbaum and by Coullet and Tresser in the 1970s to study the asymptotic small-scale geometry of the attractor of one-dimensional systems that are at the transition from simple to chaotic dynamics. This geometry turns out not to depend on the choice of the map under rather mild smoothness conditions. The existence of a unique renormalization fixed point that is also hyperbolic among generic smooth-enough maps plays a crucial role in the corresponding renormalization theory. The uniqueness and hyperbolicity of the renormalization fixed point were first shown in the holomorphic context, by means that generalize to other renormalization operators. It was then proved that, in the space of C2+α unimodal maps, for α>0, the period doubling renormalization fixed point is hyperbolic as well. In this paper we study what happens when one approaches from below the minimal smoothness thresholds for the uniqueness and for the hyperbolicity of the period doubling renormalization generic fixed point. Indeed, our main result states that in the space of C2 unimodal maps the analytic fixed point is not hyperbolic and that the same remains true when adding enough smoothness to get a priori bounds. In this smoother class, called C2+∣⋅∣, the failure of hyperbolicity is tamer than in C2. Things get much worse with just a bit less smoothness than C2, as then even the uniqueness is lost and other asymptotic behavior becomes possible. We show that the period doubling renormalization operator acting on the space of C1+Lip unimodal maps has infinite topological entropy.

This paper is concerned with the lower semicontinuity of attractors for semilinear non-autonomous differential equations in Banach spaces. We require the unperturbed attractor to be given as the union of unstable manifolds of time-dependent hyperbolic solutions, generalizing previous results valid only for gradient-like systems in which the hyperbolic solutions are equilibria. The tools employed are a study of the continuity of the local unstable manifolds of the hyperbolic solutions and results on the continuity of the exponential dichotomy of the linearization around each of these solutions.

Let 0<α<1 and β>1. We show that every x∈[0,1] has an expansion of the form where hi=hi(x)∈{0,α/β}, and pi=pi(x)∈{0,1}. We study the dynamical system underlying this expansion and give the density of the invariant measure that is equivalent to the Lebesgue measure. We prove that the system is weakly Bernoulli, and we give a version of the natural extension. For special values of α, we give the relationship of this expansion with the greedy β-expansion.

Makienko’s conjecture, a proposed addition to Sullivan’s dictionary, can be stated as follows: the Julia set of a rational function R:ℂ∞→ℂ∞ has buried points if and only if no component of the Fatou set is completely invariant under the second iterate of R. We prove Makienko’s conjecture for rational functions with Julia sets that are decomposable continua. This is a very broad collection of Julia sets; it is not known if there exists a rational function whose Julia set is an indecomposable continuum.

We give an elementary proof of the analytic KAM theorem by reducing it to a Picard iteration of a certain PDE with quadratic nonlinearity, the so-called Polchinski renormalization group equation studied in quantum field theory.

Let (M,ℱ) be a compact codimension-one foliated manifold whose leaves are endowed with Riemannian metrics, and consider continuous functions on M that are harmonic along the leaves of ℱ. If every such function is constant on leaves, we say that (M,ℱ) has the Liouville property. Our main result is that codimension-one foliated bundles over compact negatively curved manifolds satisfy the Liouville property. A related result for ℝ-covered foliations is also established.

We study minimal homeomorphisms (all orbits are dense) of the tori Tn, n≤4. The linear part of a homeomorphism φ of Tn is the linear mapping L induced by φ on the first homology group of Tn. It follows from the Lefschetz fixed point theorem that 1 is an eigenvalue of L if φ minimal. We show that if φ is minimal and n≤4, then L is quasi-unipontent, that is, all of the eigenvalues of L are roots of unity and conversely if L∈GL(n,ℤ) is quasi-unipotent and 1 is an eigenvalue of L, then there exists a C∞ minimal skew-product diffeomorphism φ of Tn whose linear part is precisely L. We do not know whether these results are true for n≥5. We give a sufficient condition for a smooth skew-product diffeomorphism of a torus of arbitrary dimension to be smoothly conjugate to an affine transformation.

We show that for T a Dunford–Schwartz operator on a σ-finite measure space (X,Σ,μ) and f∈L1(X,μ), whenever the one-sided ergodic Hilbert transform ∑ n≥1(Tnf/n) converges in norm, it converges μ-a.s. A similar result is obtained for any positive contraction of some fixed Lp(X,Σ,μ), p>1. Applying our result to the case where T is the (unitary) operator induced by a measure-preserving (invertible) transformation, we obtain a positive answer to a question of Gaposhkin.

We consider transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms for which every periodic orbit has only one positive and one negative Lyapunov exponent. We prove various properties of such systems, including strong pinching, C1+β smoothness of the Anosov splitting, and C1 smoothness of measurable invariant conformal structures and distributions. We apply these results to volume-preserving diffeomorphisms with two-dimensional stable and unstable distributions and diagonalizable derivatives of the return maps at periodic points. We show that a finite cover of such a diffeomorphism is smoothly conjugate to an Anosov automorphism of 𝕋4; as a corollary, we obtain local rigidity for such diffeomorphisms. We also establish a local rigidity result for Anosov diffeomorphisms in dimension three.

We say that the geometric dimension of a countable group G is equal to n if any free Borel action of G on a standard Borel probability space (X,μ), induces an equivalence relation of geometric dimension n on (X,μ) in the sense of Gaboriau. Let ℬ be the set of all finitely generated amenable groups all of whose subgroups are also finitely generated, and let 𝒜 be the subset of ℬ consisting of finite groups, torsion-free groups and their finite extensions. In this paper we study finite free products K of groups in 𝒜. The geometric dimension of any such group K is one: we prove that also geom-dim(Gf(K))=1 for any finite extension Gf(K) of K, applying the results of Stallings on finite extensions of free product groups, together with the results of Gaboriau and others in orbit equivalence theory. Using results of Karrass, Pietrowski and Solitar we extend these results to finite extensions of free groups. We also give generalizations and applications of these results to groups with geometric dimension greater than one. We construct a family of finitely generated groups {Kn}n∈ℕ,n>1, such that geom-dim(Kn)=n and geom-dim(Gf(Kn))=n for any finite extension Gf(Kn) of Kn. In particular, this construction allows us to produce, for each integer n>1, a family of groups {K(s,n)}s∈ℕ of geometric dimension n, such that any finite extension of K(s,n) also has geometric dimension n, but the finite extensions Gf(K(s,n)) are non-isomorphic, if s≠s′.

The paper is devoted to the study of the multifractal structure of disintegrations of Gibbs measures and conditional (random) Birkhoff averages. Our approach is based on the relativized thermodynamic formalism, convex analysis and, especially, the delicate constructions of Moran-like subsets of level sets.

In this paper, we propose a model for the destruction of three-dimensional horseshoes via heterodimensional cycles. This model yields some new dynamical features. Among other things, it provides examples of homoclinic classes properly contained in other classes and it is a model of a new sort of heteroclinic bifurcations we call generating.

We consider the map Tα,β(x):=βx+α mod 1, which admits a unique probability measure μα,β of maximal entropy. For x∈[0,1], we show that the orbit of x is μα,β-normal for almost all (α,β)∈[0,1)×(1,∞) (with respect to Lebesgue measure). Nevertheless, we construct analytic curves in [0,1)×(1,∞) along which the orbit of x=0 is μα,β-normal at no more than one point. These curves are disjoint and fill the set [0,1)×(1,∞). We also study the generalized β-transformations (in particular, the tent map). We show that the critical orbit x=1 is normal with respect to the measure of maximal entropy for almost all β.

Let 0<θ<1 be an irrational number of bounded type. We prove that for any map in the family (e2πiθz+αz2)ez, α∈ℂ, the boundary of the Siegel disk, with fixed point at the origin, is a quasi-circle passing through one or both of the critical points.

We introduce a new method for estimating the growth of various quantities arising in dynamical systems. Applying our method to polygonal billiards on surfaces of constant curvature, we obtain estimates almost everywhere on direction complexities and position complexities. As a byproduct, we recover the power bounds of Boshernitzan on the number of billiard orbits between almost all pairs of points in a planar polygon [M. Boshernitzan. Private letter to H. Masur (1986)].

We find an explicit formula for the invariant density h of an arbitrary eventually expanding piecewise linear map τ of an interval [0,1]. We do not assume that the slopes of the branches are the same and we allow arbitrary number of shorter branches touching zero or touching one or hanging in between. The construction involves the matrix S which is defined in a way somewhat similar to the definition of the kneading matrix of a continuous piecewise monotonic map. Under some additional assumptions, we prove that if 1 is not an eigenvalue of S, then the dynamical system (τ,h⋅m) is ergodic with full support.

For a large class of non-uniformly expanding maps of ℝm, with indifferent fixed points and unbounded distortion and that are non-necessarily Markovian, we construct an absolutely continuous invariant measure. We extend previously used techniques for expanding maps on quasi-Hölder spaces to our case. We give general conditions and provide examples to which our results apply.

We prove that general topological dynamical systems on metric Cantor spaces can be embedded into cellular automata defined on Cayley graphs. Furthermore, we prove that it is possible to construct this embedding in such a way that topological entropy is preserved.

For points in d real dimensions, we introduce a geometry for general digit sets. We introduce a positional number system where the basis for our representation is a fixed d by d matrix over ℤ. Our starting point is a given pair (A,𝒟) with the matrix A assumed expansive, and 𝒟 a chosen complete digit set, i.e., in bijective correspondence with the points in ℤd/ATℤd. We give an explicit geometric representation and encoding with infinite words in letters from 𝒟. We show that the attractor X(AT,𝒟) for an affine Iterated Function System (IFS) based on (A,𝒟) is a set of fractions for our digital representation of points in ℝd. Moreover our positional ‘number representation’ is spelled out in the form of an explicit IFS-encoding of a compact solenoid 𝒮A associated with the pair (A,𝒟). The intricate part (Theorem 6.15) is played by the cycles in ℤd for the initial (A,𝒟)-IFS. Using these cycles we are able to write down formulas for the two maps which do the encoding as well as the decoding in our positional 𝒟-representation. We show how some wavelet representations can be realized on the solenoid, and on symbolic spaces.
