This paper provides nonparametric tests for hypotheses about the effects of a continuous treatment variable in a nonseparable structural equation. Specifically, we consider local average responses and average partial effects and test whether these effects are identical across different levels of treatment, including testing whether they are zero for all treatment levels as a special case. Our tests are based on consistent procedures of Bierens (1982, Journal of Econometrics 20, 105–134; 1990, Econometrica 58, 1443–1458) and Stinchcombe and White (1998, Econometric Theory 14, 295–324). The tests are easy to implement and achieve n-1/2 local power. Monte Carlo simulations show that the tests perform well in finite samples. We apply our tests to study the interest rate elasticities of loan demand in microfinance. We also extend our testing procedures to covariate-conditioned average effects and marginal effects.

We study a family of nonparametric tests of density ratio ordering between two continuous probability distributions on the real line. Density ratio ordering is satisfied when the two distributions admit a nonincreasing density ratio. Equivalently, density ratio ordering is satisfied when the ordinal dominance curve associated with the two distributions is concave. To test this property, we consider statistics based on the Lp-distance between an empirical ordinal dominance curve and its least concave majorant. We derive the limit distribution of these statistics when density ratio ordering is satisfied. Further, we establish that, when 1 ≤ p ≤ 2, the limit distribution is stochastically largest when the two distributions are equal. When 2 < p ≤ ∞, this is not the case, and in fact the limit distribution diverges to infinity along a suitably chosen sequence of concave ordinal dominance curves. Our results serve to clarify, extend, and amend assertions appearing previously in the literature for the cases p = 1 and p = ∞. We provide numerical evidence confirming their relevance in finite samples.

The paper provides a careful, analytical account of Trygve Haavelmo’s use of the analogy between controlled experiments common in the natural sciences and econometric techniques. The experimental analogy forms the linchpin of the methodology for passive observation that he develops in his famous monograph, The Probability Approach in Econometrics (1944). Contrary to some recent interpretations of Haavelmo’s method, the experimental analogy does not commit Haavelmo to a strong apriorism in which econometrics can only test and reject theoretical hypotheses, rather it supports the acquisition of knowledge through a two-way exchange between theory and empirical evidence. Once the details of the analogy are systematically understood, the experimental analogy can be used to shed light on theory-consistent cointegrated vector autoregression (CVAR) scenario analyses. A CVAR scenario analysis can be interpreted as a clear example of Haavelmo’s ‘experimental’ approach; and, in turn, it can be shown to extend and develop Haavelmo’s methodology and to address issues that Haavelmo regarded as unresolved.

This paper considers estimation and inference for varying-coefficient models with nonstationary regressors. We propose a nonparametric estimation method using penalized splines, which achieves the same optimal convergence rate as kernel-based methods, but enjoys computation advantages. Utilizing the mixed model representation of penalized splines, we develop a likelihood ratio test statistic for checking the stability of the regression coefficients. We derive both the exact and the asymptotic null distributions of this test statistic. We also demonstrate its optimality by examining its local power performance. These theoretical findings are well supported by simulation studies.

This paper discusses the problem of testing misspecifications in semiparametric regression models for a large family of econometric models under rather general conditions. We focus on two main issues that typically arise in econometrics. First, many econometric models are estimated through maximum likelihood or pseudo-ML methods like, for example, limited dependent variable or gravity models. Second, often one might not want to fully specify the null hypothesis. Instead, one would rather impose some structure like separability or monotonicity. In order to address these points we introduce an adaptive omnibus test. Special emphasis is given to practical issues like adaptive bandwidth choice, general but simple requirements on the estimates, and finite sample performance, including the resampling approximations.

Much of modern econometrics stems directly from the post-1940 works of Haavelmo and the Cowles Commission (CC) Monograph 10. This paper examines the consolidation process of the Haavelmo-CC research program mainly during the 1950–70 period from three aspects: (i) developments of econometrics textbooks, (ii) emerging themes and trends in econometric research, and (iii) the contribution of the program to empirical modeling of real-world issues. The examination reveals that the program has gained dominance primarily through its adherence to the scientific banner and style rather than its empirical relevance. The adoption of the hard science methodology is decisive in winning over the academic community; the taxonomy of econometrics into steps involving primarily specification, identification, and estimation has played a pivotal role in generating compartmentalized research topics with manageable technical challenge and also in facilitating the educational need for compiling self-contained subjects and definitely soluble questions.

A two-step generalized method of moments estimation procedure can be made robust to heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation in the data by using a nonparametric estimator of the optimal weighting matrix. This paper addresses the issue of choosing the corresponding smoothing parameter (or bandwidth) so that the resulting point estimate is optimal in a certain sense. We derive an asymptotically optimal bandwidth that minimizes a higher-order approximation to the asymptotic mean-squared error of the estimator of interest. We show that the optimal bandwidth is of the same order as the one minimizing the mean-squared error of the nonparametric plugin estimator, but the constants of proportionality are significantly different. Finally, we develop a data-driven bandwidth selection rule and show, in a simulation experiment, that it may substantially reduce the estimator’s mean-squared error relative to existing bandwidth choices, especially when the number of moment conditions is large.

This paper studies the robust estimation and inference of threshold models with integrated regressors. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the profiled least squares (LS) estimator under the diminishing threshold effect assumption that the size of the threshold effect converges to zero. Depending on how rapidly this sequence converges, the model may be identified or only weakly identified and asymptotic theorems are developed for both cases. As the convergence rate is unknown in practice, a model-selection procedure is applied to determine the model identification strength and to construct robust confidence intervals, which have the correct asymptotic size irrespective of the magnitude of the threshold effect. The model is then generalized to incorporate endogeneity and serial correlation in error terms, under which, we design a Cochrane–Orcutt feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) estimator which enjoys efficiency gains and robustness against different error specifications, including both I(0) and I(1) errors. Based on this FGLS estimator, we further develop a sup-Wald statistic to test for the existence of the threshold effect. Monte Carlo simulations show that our estimators and test statistics perform well.

Haavelmo was the first to recognize the capacity of economic models to guide policies. This paper describes some of the barriers that Haavelmo’s ideas have had (and still have) to overcome and lays out a logical framework that has evolved from Haavelmo’s insight and matured into a coherent and comprehensive account of the relationships between theory, data, and policy questions. The mathematical tools that emerge from this framework now enable investigators to answer complex policy and counterfactual questions using simple routines, some by mere inspection of the model’s structure. Several such problems are illustrated by examples, including misspecification tests, nonparametric identification, mediation analysis, and introspection. Finally, we observe that economists are largely unaware of the benefits that Haavelmo’s ideas bestow upon them and, to close this gap, we identify concrete recent advances in causal analysis that economists can utilize in research and education.

This paper proposes a new two-stage estimation and inference procedure for a class of partially identified models. The procedure can be considered an extension of classical minimum distance estimation procedures to accommodate inequality constraints and partial identification. It involves no tuning parameter, is nonconservative, and is conceptually and computationally simple. The class of models includes models of interest to applied researchers, including the static entry game, a voting game with communication, and a discrete mixture model. Besides, a technical contribution is an implicit correspondence lemma which generalizes the implicit function theorem to multivalued implicit maps.

The paper considers testing parametric assumptions on the conditional mean and variance functions for nonlinear autoregressive models. To this end, we compare the kernel density estimate of the marginal density of the process with a convolution-type density estimate. It is shown that, interestingly, the latter estimate has a parametric $\left( {\sqrt n } \right)$ rate of convergence, thus substantially improving the classical kernel density estimates whose rates of convergence are much inferior. Our results are confirmed by a simulation study for threshold autoregressive processes and autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic processes.

In this paper, we consider a nonparametric model with a time-varying regression function and locally stationary regressors. We are interested in the question whether the regression function has the same shape over a given time span. To tackle this testing problem, we propose a kernel-based L2-test statistic. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the statistic both under the null and under fixed and local alternatives. To improve the small sample behavior of the test, we set up a wild bootstrap procedure and derive the asymptotic properties thereof. The theoretical analysis of the paper is complemented by a simulation study and a real data example.

Trygve Haavelmo and the author were colleagues at the Cowles Commission for Research in Economics during the academic year 1945–46. The econometric analysis of simultaneous equation models and its uses in economic analysis were explored.

We consider an omnibus test for the correct specification of the dynamics of a sequence $\left\{ {x\left( t \right)} \right\}_{t \in Z^d } $ in a lattice. As it happens with causal models and d = 1, its asymptotic distribution is not pivotal and depends on the estimator of the unknown parameters of the model under the null hypothesis. One first main goal of the paper is to provide a transformation to obtain an asymptotic distribution that is free of nuisance parameters. Secondly, we propose a bootstrap analog of the transformation and show its validity. Thirdly, we discuss the results when $\left\{ {x\left( t \right)} \right\}_{t \in Z^d } $ are the errors of a parametric regression model. As a by product, we also discuss the asymptotic normality of the least squares estimator of the parameters of the regression model under very mild conditions. Finally, we present a small Monte Carlo experiment to shed some light on the finite sample behavior of our test.

We derive conditions for the identification of the structural parameters in Markov decision model under the assumptions of Rust (1987, Econometrica 55, 999–1033) when the payoff function is parametrically specified. Identification in this class of dynamic problems is difficult to establish since the parameters of interest enter the value function nonlinearly, and the value function is only defined implicitly as a fixed point of some functional equation. We show it is sufficient to verify identification in the pseudomodel, which is more tractable as it is originally designed to reduce the computational burden in the estimation problem, for the identification of the data generating parameter of the underling model. Our results extend naturally to a class of dynamic discrete action games commonly used in empirical industrial organizations.

Important features of certain economic models may be revealed by studying positive eigenfunctions of appropriately chosen linear operators. Examples include long-run risk–return relationships in dynamic asset pricing models and components of marginal utility in external habit formation models. This paper provides identification conditions for positive eigenfunctions in nonparametric models. Identification is achieved if the operator satisfies two mild positivity conditions and a power compactness condition. Both existence and identification are achieved under a further nondegeneracy condition. The general results are applied to obtain new identification conditions for external habit formation models and for positive eigenfunctions of pricing operators in dynamic asset pricing models.

This paper shows what quantile regressions identify for general structural functions. Under fairly mild conditions, the quantile partial derivative identifies a weighted average of heterogeneous structural partial effects among the subpopulation of individuals at the conditional quantile of interest. This result justifies the use of quantile regressions as means of measuring heterogeneous causal effects for a general class of structural functions with multiple unobservables.

This paper develops uniform approximations for the integrated mean squared error (IMSE) of nonparametric series regression estimators, including both least-squares and averaging least-squares estimators. To develop these approximations, we also generalize an important probability inequality of Rosenthal (1970, Israel Journal of Mathematics 8, 273–303; 1972, Sixth Berkeley Symposium on Mathematical Statistics and Probability, vol. 2, pp. 149–167. University of California Press) to the case of Hilbert-space valued random variables.

This paper is an extension of Magnus (2002, Econometrics Journal 5, 225–236) to multiple dimensions. We consider estimation of a multivariate normal mean under sum of squared error loss. We construct the efficiency bound (the lowest achievable risk) for minimax shrinkage estimation in the class of minimax orthogonally invariate estimators satisfying the sufficient conditions of Efron and Morris (1976, Annals of Statistics 4, 11–21). This allows us to compare the regret of existing orthogonally invariate shrinkage estimators. We also construct a new shrinkage estimator which achieves substantially lower maximum regret than existing estimators.
