Instructions for authors

During the Covid-19 crisis we understand that some authors may not have access to equipment to enable electronic return of a scanned, signed Author Publishing Agreement. If this applies to you, please see these FAQs. If you are able, please return the full Author Publishing Agreement as normal.

Thank you for considering submitting to the Canadian Journal of Philosophy. We ask that you read about our aims and scope to see that your work is suitable for the journal, and about our review process to learn about how your paper will be handled.

The submission requirements are the same for regular articles and for discussion notes, except that the word limit on the latter is 3,000 words.

There are two sets of requirements: one for submission, the other (in case of acceptance) for preparation for publication.

    Requirements for submissions
  • PDF file format
  • Double line-spacing; 12 point font size; 1 inch margins; US letter paper size
  • Numbered pages
  • Normally fewer than 10,000 words, including footnotes and references. (Longer  papers may be considered but must evidently require the extraordinary length.)
  • No author-identifying information in the text or footnotes, or in metadata embedded in the PDF file
    • This doesn’t rule out citations of other papers of yours, if they are done in a way that doesn’t suggest your authorship of the present manuscript. (In some cases doing this may be less author-identifying than having placeholder references to other papers of yours.) It does rule out acknowledgements and references to personal communications.
  • Please do what you can to minimize the chance that an Internet search will reveal your authorship of the paper (e.g. by not posting it or listing it by title on your personal web page, or by changing its title from conference presentations of it).

Once you have your PDF ready, please submit it using Editorial Manager. Please select “Original article” or “Discussion note” as appropriate, in the drop-down menu.

For help using Editorial Manager, please email oprs-support@cambridge.org. That address is checked multiple times a day and replies will be prompt.

    Requirements for accepted manuscripts
  • An editable file (not a PDF), e.g. Microsoft Word or LaTeX source file
    • If LaTeX: include the bibliography in the source file. (Run bibtex, then replace the \bibliography{...} line with the contents of the .bbl file.)
  • Use footnotes rather than endnotes.
  • Put citations in the text using the author-date system, and put a list of referenced works at the end of the paper.
  • Any images should be high resolution (> 300 dpi)
  • No images embedded in Word documents; send as separate files
  • Names and institutional affiliations, including country, of all contributing authors are required.
