Examination of the types of some species of Aedes has shown that a number of them have been misidentified by later workers. Certain changes of names are unfortunately necessary; these are indicated below. Notes on a few types not involved in this synonymy are included. Descriptions of two new species are also given–one of these has been frequently recorded and described in the literature under the name Aedes impiger (walk.); the other has not previously been described.

The literature dealing with the coleopterous fauna of Nova Scotia is extremely scanty, the old lists of Jones (1869) and Evans (1899) still being the most comprehensive treatments of the subject. Leng (19201, it is true, interested principally in limital records, indicated in his catalogue the presence in Nova Scotia of all species known by him to occur there. But a list compiled from his catalogue is far from complete. Of recent papers, two by Brown (1910, 1950) on introduced European species are the most interesting.

This note reports an extension in the known distribution of the species Ancistrocerus parietum (Linnaeus) in Canada, and a few observations on its nesting habits.

A. parietum is a European species that, according to Requaert (1943), was recently introduced into North America, it being first recorded from Ithaca, N.Y., in 1916. Bequaert suggested that the species was gradually extending its range in North America. He noted its occurrence in the northeastern United States, as far west as Michigan and as far south as Ohio and New Jersey. He noted two Canadian records (Montreal and Kamouraska County, Quebec).

An aphid collected on Philadelphus gordonianus Lindl. at Agassiz, British Columbia, by R. Glendenning was sent to the writer for identification. The specimens could not be determined and extensive examination indicated that a new genus and species of aphid were involved.

In the potato storage cellar of the Fredericton laboratory, aphids were collected on March 1, 1954, from chrysanthemum cuttings that had been placed in the cellar during the autumn of 1953. The aphids were so numerous that they were causing severe injury to the plants. The writer identified the specimens as of Myzus ascalonicus Doncaster. This identification was verified by Mr. J. P. Doncaster, British Museum of Natural History.

Early in the summer of 1951 a small collection of aquatic insects was submitted to the author by J. Goodwin of Toronto, taken from Sheldon Creek in Dufferin County, Ontario. Included were nymphs of two readily distinguishable species of Rithrogena, one having bright red gills and the other hyaline whitish gills, Those with hyaline whitish gills were more abundant and proved to be R. impersonata Mc.D. of which specimens from Baddeck, N.S. and Lachine, P.Q. are in the Canadian National Collection at Ottawa. I have records of this species in both nymphal and adult stages from the Credit River, Peel County, Ontario, where the association of nymph and adult was made, and in the nymphal stage from the Saugeen River in Grey County, Ontario. The nymphs with red gills proved to be those of a new species which, considering genitalic characters, is closely related to R. impersonata.

The genus Metaxmeste Hübner [1824-25] was erected for four nominal species. There was no original type designation, and so far as I know there has been no subsequent one; accordingly, I designate Pyralis phrygialis Hübner as type. This species, though included in Titanio Hübner by most authors, differs from normalis Hübner, the tvpe of Titanio, in the less prominent frons, in lacking specialized setae on the ddrsal surface of the antenna, and in having Sc+R completely free from Rs in the hind wing. I consider these characters to be of generic importance.

The following technique employed at the Vernon Laboratory greatly facilitates the preparation of inflated larval specimens. Inflated larvae are dried over a reflector infra-red heat lamp (250 watts), clamped to a titration stand. The standard heat lamp with an aluminum reflector, and the red bowl heat lamp with a nickel reflector have been tested; the latter is preferable because it radiates more heat with reduced glare.

Two genera, both represented by new species, are here reported for the first time from the New World. One of them Colobaea (incl. Ctenulus), is well known in the palaearctic region; the other, Hedria, is new, although its type has been mistaken for the palaearctic species Elgiva lineata Fallén.

In preparing a revision of the triaspidine genera which occur in North America, the author has considered all the genera of this group from the world, and has found some shifting of species necessary. The genus Foersterin was created in 1896 by Szépligeti for the reception of two new species described from Europe. At that time, both the genus and the two included species were rather inadequately characterized. This situation has continued to the present day and several authors have incorrectly placed several new species from other zoogeographical regions in this genus. This paper is an attempt to clarify the concept of Szépligeti's genus, and gives a redescription of F. laeviuscula Szépl.

Six North American species of leafhoppers of the genus Aphrodes were listed, with 36 synonyms, by Oman (1949). Examination of the male genitalia has revealed not more than four species. Because of the extensive individual variation it is often difficult to identify some of the species on external characters alone. The male genitalia, however, show good specific characters (Figs. 1-5).

The present genus includes both neotropical and nearctic species of which none appears to have been encountered commonly in either economic or faunistic investigations. In the material available for the present study, only two or three species, including curvirostris (genotype) are represented in good series. A critical study of the accumulated material has disclosed a number of hitherto unknown spedies, the descriptions of which are presented below.

The pine leaf miner (Exoteleia pinifoliella (Chamb.)), a native insect attacking several species of thick-needled pines (1), is generally distributed throughout the Atlantic States from Southern Ontario (4) to Georgia (3). In the vicinity of Syracuse, N.Y., there is but one generation a year. The insect overwinters in the larval form, begins pupation in early May, and flight and oviposition take place a month later.

A polyhedral disease was discovered to be one of the natural agents attacking the black-headed budworm, Acleris variana (Fern.) in the coastal region of British Columbia during the outbreak of this insect, 1940-45. This disease became the most important single factor contributing to the decline of the outbreak (Prebble and Graham 1). The present report includes observations on some of the symptoms and microscopic characteristics of the disease.

A co-operative investigation to discover the factors necessary for egg production in the horn fly, Siphona irritans (L.), was begun in 1950 at the Lethbridge laboratory and the Department of Bacteriology, University of Alberta, Edmonton. Although there is an extensive literature on the horn fly, comparatively few publications deal exclusively with its life-history and habits. Information on the biology of this insect is found in a widely scattered literature dealing with muscids or dung-breeding insects in general. The dearth of information in recent years on this economically important insect may be caused in part by the fragmentary literature. This paper is a review of the available information on the life-history and habits of the horn fly, along with observations of the authors.

Following the lead set by Dr. George M. Stirrett, (Canadian Entomologist, July, 1952), the following records of Mallophaga from avian hosts taken in the province of Quebec have been assembled. It is hoped that others will record collections made in their respective provinces, so that eventually records and the distribution of species may be available for the Dominion.

The following species were largely collected by the author, with some assistance from the late Dr. W. E, Swales. The specimens form part of the Macdonald College Collection.

The following are descriptions of a new genus and two new species of leafhoppers allied to Streptanus Rib. and Macustus Rib. that have been found in the Subarctic of Alaska and northwest Canada, of a new species of Hardya Edw. from the same region, and of the two new species of Hebecephalus DeL. from the mountains of Western Canada.

Adults of the carrot rust fly, Psila rosae (Fab.), are difficult to find in the field. Frequently they can be found in light to moderate numbers in some situations, occasionally in large numbers, rarely in moderate to large numbers over a period of several days. Fabricius (1794, p. 356) reported that they were found commonly on flowers in Kiel, Germany. Curtis (1860, p. 405) wrote, “The fly…was named rosae by Fabricius, being found probably sunning itself upon the leaves of rose bushes”. Several British writers observed that the flies were most numerous in the parts of carrot fields sheltered by hedges. Baker et al. (1942) wrote: “Flies were present in small numbers on certain weeds, but in considerable numbers in the hawthorn hedges”. Roebuck (1945), Wilson (1945), Petherbridge et al. (1945), and Wright et al. (1945) made similar observations. Some British writers reported flies on various plants, as follows: Whitehead (1890), on low shrubs near streams and in meadows; Smith (1921), on sallow, oak, and hazel; Petherbridge et al. (1942, 1943, 1945), on wild chervil (Anthriscus sylvestris) , hemlock (Conium maculatum), nettles, and potatoes; Wilson (1945), on coarse herbage, growing crops (especially potato), weeds (especially nettles); and Wright et al. (1946), on trees, hedges, and ditches with a thick herb covering.
