Palpi moderately long, porrect with third joint slightly downcurved, pale creamy, clothed with closely appressed scales. Antennae thin, dark. Head and collar pale creamy with a black spot on collar behind each eye. Thorax whitish with a slight greenish tinge, the patagia heavily shaded with black at base. Abdomen light creamy-ochreous. Primaries with light greenish ground-color, sprinkled slightly with white in the basal and terminal areas and heavily shaded with this color in the postmedian band.

The name Linnaemya has been used in America and to a lesser extent in Europe for a collection of rather distinct elements linked together by the following characters:

Large robust forms, 8-15 mm. long; eyes densely haired; antennae large, the third segment truncate at the tip; second aristal segment somewhat elongate; palpi reduced in length, as long as the second antennal segment or reduced to mere papillae; epistoma strongly warped forward, the antennal and oral margin axes about the same length; bend of the fourth vein with a strong appendage, the apical cell open far before the wing tip; abdomen stout, bearing at least one pair of discal bristles on the intermediate segments.

This study was an attempt to discover, for the Greater Winnipeg district, what species of mosquitoes occurred, under what conditions, their seasonal distribution, and the relative abundance of each species. The field work and preservation of the material were done by the writer in conjunction with his duties, first as Senior Foreman in 1938 and later, in 1939, as Field Manager of the Winnipeg Anti-Mosquito Campaign.

In the course of a limnological study of lakes of various salt concentrations in the Province of Saskatchewan, extending over a period of three years (1938-1940), Mr. J. E. Moore made extensive collections of aquatic organisms, among which was a considerable number of Odonata, both adults and nymphs. These were sent to the writer for determination and the records of such species as could be definitely identified were reported in our preliminary list of the Odonata of Saskatchewan (Walker '40).

A small group of Eupithecia species, of which palpata Pack, is probably the best known to eastern American workers, forms a compact entity, almost worthy of at least subgeneric designation. In all the species the palpi are very long and porrect, compressed laterally, presenting in consequence a blade-like appearance. In the male genitalia the uncus terminates in a single fine point, in contradistinction to the dorso-ventral bifid nature of this organ in the majority of Eupithecia species.

While I was rearranging my Lycaenidae to conform with the McDunnough List, I found it necessary to check some forms which were not determined. Some of these proved to be new. In this paper, I present descriptions of these new butterflies.

The literature contains many references to the close resemblance of various Orthoptera to the colour of the vegetation and soil on which they occur. Hancock (1911) noted this particularly with the acridid Dissosteira carolina (Linn.) and attempted to determine whether this species changes colour at the critical stage of the last moult. From his experiments he concluded that the Carolina locust does not change abruptly from one colour to another during the critical period following ecdysis, but that the change takes place gradually.

In the course of reviewing the Psenine wasps, it has become apparent that the names of several Nearctic species are homonyms or incorrect. These are discussed briefly and renamed below.

For some time it has appeared to me that two species have been going under the above name. Heinrich in his revision gives the food-plant as Hamamelis but the few bred specimens in our collection from southern Ontario from larvae on this plant together with several captured specimens from New York State did not match Kearfott's description particularly well.

The subfamily Rhizoglyphinae is a group which was reclassified by the Russian Zoologist, A. A. Zakhvatkine, in 1937. As a result of his studies he became convinced that Oudemans' 1923-1932 classification of the Diacotricha was unstable and very artificial.

In the past two years three distinct types of Coleophorid cases have been found in the Ottawa region in the early spring, attached mostly to the leaves of Aster tradescanthi or allied, thin-leafed species. Small series of moths have been bred from all three types of cases, the adults appearing in late June or early July.

The preceding part under this general title was published in 1944 (Can. Ent. 76: 166 - 172). At this time I am characterizing some Eriopterine crane-flies from the three Pacific Coast states that were collected and sent to me by Messrs. Otto Degener, James A. Macnab, Axel L. Melander, Herman A. Scullen, and the late Millard C. Van Duzee. Except where indicated to the contrary later in the text, the types of the novelties are retained in my collection through the generosity of the collectors.

The preceding part under this general title was published in 1943 (Can. Ent., 73: 139-145). In the present instalment I am describing new spccies of the genus Tipula received from various friends, as acknowledged throughout the text. The types of the novelties are preserved in my collection of these flies.

In a previous paper I discussed the character of the female genitalia of the genus Hydriomena in general and more particularly in connection with the glaucata-crokeri group. In the present paper I offer further notes on certain other species of the genus which I have lumped roughly into the ruberata group. All these species show in the male genitalia a deep excavation between the forks of the uncus; each fork tends to broaden toward its apex which is evenly rounded and not bent downward nor pointed.

The first records of Odonata from Maine are given by Hagen (1861), who mentioned five species as occurring in the state. In a few later papers (Hagen, 1873, 1874, and 1875, and Walsh, 1863) additional species were recorded from Maine, bringing the total to 27 in 1875.

An investigation of the parasites of the pest species of grasshoppers in Canada is now being carried out as a co-operative project between the Field Crop Investigations Unit of the Division of Entomology and the Parasite Laboratory of the Dominion Department of Agriculture.

Arthrochlamys bebbianae Brown is a small chrysomelid that occurs rather commonly in the Ottawa District. It is one of a group of species that have been confused under the names Chlamys gibbosa (Fab.) and C. plicata (Fab.). Both its larvae, which are case-bearers, and its adults feed on the leaves and on the epidermis of the new growth of a willow, Salix Bebbiana Sarg. The speries appears to be monophagous, and it tends to occur in diffuse colonies.

Through the kindness of Drs. J. McDunnough and O. Peck of the Division of Entomology, Ottawa, the writer recently had the opportunity of examining the Plecoptera of the Canadian National Collection which were taken in the more northern parts of Canada, Alaska and Labrador.
