The excellent results obtained by a study of both male and female genital organs when determining specimens of this difficult genus in connection nith my paper on the “Lepidoptera of Seton Lake, B. C.” have led me to continue this work with a view to clearing up the numerous synonymical tangles in our Canadian species. The variability within the limits of a single species, the poor condition of much of the type material, and the failure of authors such as Taylor, Pearsall and Swett not only to recognize each other's species, but to realize the wide-spread distributiion of the individual species, hare all contributed to produce a muddle of specific names which has been almost impossible to unravel by a mere study of external characters.

Of the five species of Homaemus recorded from America, north of Mexico, proteus Stal. and parvulus (Germ.) are cnnfined tn the southern half of United States; variegatus Van D. is known only from California; bijugis Uhl. ranges throughout middle and western United States and Canada, extending southward to Colorado, New Mexico and California; aeneifrons (Say) has been commonly recorded from the Atlantic to the Pacific in northern United States and Canada and has been reported from the southwest from Colorado, New Mexico and California.

The following study of Diapterna is based upon the availabile types together with material in the Museum of Comparative Zoology and in the Canadian National and Owen Bryant Collections. The collections of F. S. Carr and J. B. Wallis have also been studied. Most of the characters presented by the species are not well adapted for use in keys, and many of them vary within the species. However, material can be readily and accurately determined without reference to the genitalic characters which, though often feeble, are very constant. It will be noted that the form of the male anterior tibial spur is characteristic in each species. In the descriptions which follow, no mention is made of this spur except a note as to whether or not the apex is turned caudad, a very important feature not shown in the accompanying figures.

Distinguished from allied species by the relatively narrow head and smaller eyes; width of head acrloss eyes about equal to basal width of pronotum; length of second antennal segment much greater than width of head.

The two chilopods described below were found in collections recently sent me for identification by the Federal-Horticultural Board and by Mr. R. D. Harwood of Cornell University. The types are in the author's collection.

Length 6 mm.; width 2.1 mm. Elongate oval, moderately convex. Black, the legs in parts and antennae brown. Entire body clothed with brownish-yellow hairs.

The following notes were compiled while working over a collection of Lepidoptera taken by me in the Yellowstone Park, Wyoming and the Upper Gallatin Canyon, Montana during the latter half of July and the first part of August of the summer of 1928.

This variety of C. hieroglyphica was described by Ball ( I ) as follows:

“Somewhat smaller than the preceding. Shining black, a few of the white markings of the typical form persisting, as follows : the margins of the clypeds, the genae, a line below the margin of the pronotum, the circle around the apex of head, a line against the eye, and the marking of the scutellum. Often there is part of a median line on vertex and a pair of slender lines running from the inner corner of the eye back across the pronotum to the light margined claval suture.”

Many new species of the genus Hylemyia Rob.-Desv. are herewith described as a result of a study of Canadian Muscidae in the National Collection at Ottawa. This family is represented by a large number of specimens in the collection, and by a representative number of species belonging to the Canadian zone. No doubt the number will be doubled within the next few years as collecting progresses.

Length 4.4 mm. Black, shilling, margin of elytra feebly greenish, appendages slightly rufescent. Head as wide as pronotum at apex. Pronotum narrower than elytra, 70 per cent. ( ♀ ) to 74 per cent. ( ♂ ) as long as broad, apex 74 per cent., base 80 per cent. as wide as pronotum at widest. Sides of pronotum broadly arcuate in front, feebly sinuate behind : front angles round ; hind angles right ; apex feebly emarginate; basal impressions bistriate; median line nearly entire. Elytra octostriate; the striae entire, three and four and five and six severally confluent towards apex; the third stria with two dorsal punctures; the striae coarsely punctate, the punctures absent on apical fifth; the eighth and marginal striae evidently finely punctate, distant from each other except on basal fourth.

Head rough tufted on crown, face smooth. Antennae four-fifths the length of the fore wings, basal segment slightly thickened, with pecten. Labial palpi moderately long, drooping, filiform, blunt pointed. Maxillary palpi minute. Middle tibiae with closely appressed scales. Posterior tibiae with closely appressed scales above, short loose hairs beneath. Fore wings lanceolate, elongate; 3 absent, 4 absent, 5 and 6 long stalked, 8 connate with 7, 9 twice as far removed from 8 as from 10, 11 absent. Hind wings about one-half, linear lanceolate; 3 absent, 4 absent, 5 and 6 stalked.

The basic list of the Tipulidae of Quebec is that of Winn and Beaulieu, in which a total of two Ptychopteridae, two Trichoceridae and eighty-seven Tipulidae are recorded from the Provinnce. Certain of the records in this list are erroneous, a few others are synonyms, while still additional species are placed in incorrect genera.

Length 2.5-3.4 mm.; width 1.2-1.4 mm. Short and robust. Dorsum dark brown, scarcely bronzed; head, pronotum and elytral intervals with closely placed, round, green spots; venter dark reddish brown; legs brown, the femora dark, the tibiae and tarsi pale.

This species is very closely related to the following, differing only in a few respects from its description. The male has a small antenna, the third segment 1.25 times length of second. The vibrissae are more closely approximated, being separated by a distance about equal to length of third antennal segment. The prealar bristle is shorter than posterior notopleural bristle. The processes of fifth sternum are not glossy along inner margin. The mid tibia has no anterior bristle, and the hind femur has a proximal series of short posteroventral bristles, none of which are equal in length to breadth of hind femur where situated.

The following short list with the accompanying notes is based upon a collection of some 2100 species collected by myself during the past eighteen years. My original intention was to publish a list of Minnesota Coleoptera, but lack of time renders this project not likely of accomplishment.

The larch bark-beetle, Dendroctonus simplex Lec., is a black beetle with reddish elytra, approximately 4.7 mm. in length, with the front convex, the pronotum constricted in front, elytra slightly wider than the pronotum, the striae moderately impressed, the strial punctures small and deep, the elytra sparsely covered with erect hairs, with the pubescence distinct. It is abundant in dying larch throughout the larch areas of Eastern Canada from the Atlantic westward across Manitoba, northern Saskatchewan and northern Alberta.

Male blackish; head with frontal vitta opaque black, faintly tinged with red at base of antennae; parafacials and cheeks grayish pruinescent with reddish to black reflections; antennae and palpi black; arista paler on distal portion. Thorax and abdomen subshining with dark reflections, the former lightly brownish pollinose, viewed from behind with three faint, narrow vittae; the latter more densely pollinose, each tergum with a broad black subtriangular mark, hypopygium shining. Legs blackish. Wings tinged, more intensively basad, but not blackened; veins dark brown. Calyptrae tinged, halteres yellow.
