Summary
Of the times of celebration of divine services in cathedral churches and colleges.
In main churches which are called cathedrals, and at the times of celebration of divine services in cathedral churches and colleges, and in colleges, it is our will that divine services shall be held daily, as the calendar of feast days and their eves shall require. Thus it is fitting that in the morning what are called ‘morning prayers’ shall be said at some convenient time, along with those which are appointed for the office of communion. And every Wednesday and Friday that solemn supplication which is called the litany shall be added. Likewise in the afternoon the evening prayers shall be said.
Who ought to be present at the divine services.
All those who are called canons and clergy, who are maintained at the expense of the churches, shall come together for the stated prayers, both in the morning and in the evening, and shall be present on those days at them daily, unless they can offer a legitimate excuse for being absent. But if they do not appear they shall be fined a certain sum of money at the discretion of the deans, or in their absence of their deputies, but on the eves of feasts we are happy to excuse those who have gone to dwell in the colleges of the universities in order to learn on the ground of their studies. But we order them all to be present at the sacred services on normal weekdays, unless they are away because of a preaching engagement.
