17 - E 101/469/3, Mich. term 1319 to Mich. term 1322 (receipts)

Summary

Account roll (compotus) of weekly accounts rendered at the Exchequer by William Chaillou, the king's clerk of works at the palace of Westminster and the Tower of London, for his expenses for the building works in St Stephen's chapel.

Physical description: A roll of nineteen membranes, sewn end-to-end; in good condition and wholly legible; some, but not all, of the membranes bear contemporary rotulet numbers.

Scope of transcription: Transcribed in full, together with the timber works at Tonbridge in the collated rolls, running from Michaelmas 1325. Previous timber works at Tonbridge (16 May 1324 to 29 Sept. 1325) are recorded in no. 19.

Collated rolls:

(1) E 101/469/9, the counter-roll of Robert de Pippeshull, controller of the king's works, has been collated with this roll. It includes a schedule of one membrane, attached to the dorse of E 101/469/9, m. 1, not found in E 101/469/8, comprising the counter-roll of the expenses of timber works at Tonbridge from 21 Oct. 1325 to the week beginning 7 Jan. 1326 for the provision of timber for the chapel. It is edited here at the end of E 101/469/8.

Physical description: A roll of nineteen membranes, sewn end-to-end, plus a schedule of one membrane attached to m. 1; in good condition and wholly legible.

Scope of transcription: Collated in full.

(2) E 101/485/15, the account of the clerk of works for the same timber works, has been collated with E 101/469/9, m. 1d, sch. 1.

Physical description: A roll of one membrane, stained and torn at the top, but mostly legible.
