Duas rezões principalmēte antre outras muytas me obrigarão (Serenissino Principe) a copillar esta historia dos grandes feytos Dafonso Dalboquerq' capitã geral & gouernador da India: áqual pus nome Cōmētarios, polos colligir dos proprios origináes q' elle no rneyo dos acõtecimẽtos de seus trabalhos escreuia a el Rey do Manuel vosso visauoo, q' nosso Senhor tẽ na sua gloria. A primeyra, pera q' V. A. veja neste pequeno volume, cõ quauto sofrimento & trabalho de sua pessoa este seu capitã conquistou os reynos & senhorios da India (q' V. A. sucederá depois de largos annos de vida del Rey dõ Joam o terceyro nosso senhor vosso auó), & a obrigaçã que tem aos netos & parẽtes daquelles q' nesta conquista acabarã seus dias. A outra f'oy, ver eu como os q' escreucram a historea da India (cõ tanto trabalho & louuor de seus engenhos) ou por terẽ hũa occupaçam geral em contar tudo o q' aconteceo aos Portugueses naquelles partes, des o principio de seu descobrimẽto, ou por falta das informações q' teueram, passarã breuemente por muytas cousas q' Afonso Dalboquerq passou nesta conquista.
