Oxyfluorfen, a Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC)/Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) Group 14 herbicide that inhibits protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase, has shown significant potential in controlling barnyardgrass. Despite its current lack of labeling for use in midsouthern U.S. rice due to the potential for crop injury, the introduction of a trait in rice that confers resistance to oxyfluorfen could provide producers with an effective alternative site of action for weed control. Field experiments were conducted during the 2021 and 2022 growing seasons near Stuttgart, AR, and near Lonoke, AR, to determine the optimum rates of clomazone (280 or 336 g ha-1) and oxyfluorfen (673 or 840 g ha-1) to use in sequential preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) applications on a silt loam soil and to assess the efficacy of oxyfluorfen when combined with clomazone and quinclorac PRE, followed by oxyfluorfen POST. No differences in barnyardgrass control were observed among treatments 14 days after emergence (DAE) in three site years, as all control was ≥90%. By 35 days after the postemergence application (DAPOST), all barnyardgrass control was ≥94% for herbicide treatments in all site years. All herbicide treatments resulted in lower barnyardgrass seed production than the nontreated in 2021. Contrasts revealed that oxyfluorfen applied PRE on a silt loam soil resulting in barnyardgrass control similar to clomazone or quinclorac alone at 14 DAE. Although oxyfluorfen combined with clomazone or quinclorac did not increase barnyardgrass control, an additional site of action for control of this weed could help reduce the evolution of resistance. Mixing oxyfluorfen with clomazone in a dry-seeded rice production system in the midsouthern U.S. would effectively control barnyardgrass and reduce the risk for resistance to both herbicides, further highlighting the potential of oxyfluorfen in rice production.

Mixing ammonium sulfate (AMS) can increase dicamba volatility. Therefore, AMS cannot be used with dicamba products in dicamba-resistant soybean. However, most dicamba products applied in corn are labeled to mix with AMS. The objectives of this study were to evaluate broadleaf weed control with dicamba (DiFlexx®) and dicamba/tembotrione (DiFlexx® DUO) applied alone or with AMS or AMS substitute and their effect on broadleaf weed density and biomass. Field experiments were conducted in Illinois, Missouri, and Nebraska in 2018 and 2019. In Illinois and Nebraska, mixing AMS + crop oil concentrate (COC) with dicamba applied at 1,120 g ae ha−1 increased the control of Palmer amaranth and waterhemp (Amaranthus species) from 78% to 92% and velvetleaf from 73% to 96% compared with dicamba applied alone 14 d after application (DAA); however, Missouri data showed no difference. Mixing AMS + COC with dicamba/tembotrione at 597 and 746 g ai ha−1 did not improve broadleaf weed control 14 DAA at any site compared with dicamba/tembotrione applied alone. Control of Amaranthus species was increased from 82% with dicamba applied at 840 g ae ha−1 to 96% when mixed with AMS + COC 28 DAA in Illinois; however, control was similar to dicamba applied at 1,120 g ae ha−1. Broadleaf weed control did not differ among dicamba or dicamba/tembotrione 28 and 56 DAA in Missouri and Nebraska. Broadleaf weed density decreased from 64 plants m−2 to 24 plants m−2 with dicamba at 1,120 g ae ha−1 with AMS + COC 14 DAA in Nebraska; however, no differences were observed in broadleaf weed density or biomass 56 DAA in any state. The results suggest that dicamba or dicamba/tembotrione can be applied without AMS or AMS substitute, especially at higher rates, without losing broadleaf weed control efficacy.

Downy brome is a cleistogamous facultative winter-annual grass weed that invades cropland, pastureland, and ruderal areas in western North America. Glyphosate-resistant downy brome, the first known glyphosate-resistant grass weed in Canada, was confirmed in a glyphosate-resistant canola field in southern Alberta in 2021. A controlled-environment study was conducted to determine the impact of preemergence soil-applied residual herbicides on glyphosate-resistant and susceptible downy brome in two field soils. Flumioxazin/pyroxasulfone (70/89 g ai ha−1), carfentrazone/pyroxasulfone (18/150 g ai ha−1), sulfentrazone/pyroxasulfone (100/100 or 150/150 g ai ha−1), and saflufenacil/pyroxasulfone (36/120 g ai ha−1) resulted in excellent (≥90%) visible control and downy brome biomass reduction 8 wk after treatment (WAT). The low rate of carfentrazone/pyroxasulfone (12/100 g ai ha−1) resulted in good (≥80%) visible control and biomass reduction 8 WAT, while the low and medium rates of saflufenacil/pyroxasulfone (18/60 or 25/84 g ai ha−1) resulted in ≥80% biomass reduction but suppression only (66% to 75%) based on visible control. Flumioxazin alone (105 g ai ha−1) resulted in good visible control (81%) 8 WAT in a sandy loam soil, but poor (13%) control in a clay loam soil. Soil type affected plant growth as evidenced by reduced growth in the untreated sandy loam soil compared to clay loam soil. The glyphosate-resistant population emerged and grew more vigorously than the glyphosate-susceptible population resulting in greater plant densities in the untreated control and some less-effective herbicide treatments. These results suggest that mixtures of a protoporphyrinogen oxidase-inhibiting herbicide with the very-long-chain fatty acid elongase inhibitor pyroxasulfone applied preemergence at ≥89 g ai ha−1 could be effective components of an herbicide layering strategy targeting glyphosate-resistant and glyphosate-susceptible downy brome.

Widespread occurrence of herbicide-resistant weeds and more variable weather conditions across the United States has made weed control in many crops more challenging. Preemergence (PRE) herbicides with soil residual activity have resurged as the foundation for early season weed control in many crops. Field experiments were conducted in Janesville and Lancaster, Wisconsin, in 2021 and 2022 (4 site-years) to evaluate the weed control efficacy of solo (single site of action [SOA]) and premix (two or more SOAs) PRE herbicides in conventional tillage corn. Treatments consisted of 18 PRE herbicides plus a nontreated check. At the Janesville-2021 site, S-metolachlor + bicyclopyrone + mesotrione, atrazine + S-metolachlor + bicyclopyrone + mesotrione, and clopyralid + acetochlor + mesotrione provided >72% giant ragweed control. At the Janesville-2022 site, none of the PRE herbicides evaluated provided >70% giant ragweed control due to the high giant ragweed density and the lack of timely rainfall. At the Lancaster-2021 site, atrazine, dicamba, and flumetsulam + clopyralid provided <45% waterhemp control, but the remaining treatments provided >90% control. At the Lancaster-2022 site, the efficacy of some PRE herbicides was reduced due to the high waterhemp density; however, most herbicides provided >75% control. At the Lancaster-2021 and Lancaster-2022 sites, only dicamba and S-metolachlor did not provide >75% common lambsquarters control. Group 15 PRE herbicides provided >75% control of giant foxtail. Across weed species, PRE herbicides with two (78%) and three (81%) SOAs provided greater weed control than PRE herbicides with a single SOA (68%), indicating that at least two SOA herbicides applied PRE result in better early season weed control. The efficacy of the PRE herbicide treatments evaluated herein varied according to the soil seedbank weed community composition and environmental conditions (i.e., rainfall following application), but the premixes were a more reliable option to improve early season weed control in conventional tillage corn.

Weed control in tree nut orchards is a year-round challenge for growers that is particularly intense during winter through summer as a result of competition and interference with management and harvest operations. A common weed control program consists of an application of a winter PRE and POST herbicide mixture, followed by a desiccation treatment in early spring and before harvest. Because most spring and summer treatments depend on a limited number of foliar-applied herbicides, summer-germinating species and/or herbicide-resistant biotypes become troublesome. Previous research has established effective PRE herbicide programs targeting winter glyphosate-resistant weeds. However, more recently, growers have reported difficulties in controlling several summer-germinating grass weeds with documented or suspected resistance to the spring and summer POST herbicide programs. In this context, research was conducted to evaluate a sequential PRE approach to control winter- and summer-germinating orchard weeds. Eight field experiments were conducted in tree nut orchards to evaluate the efficacy of common winter herbicide programs and a sequential herbicide program for control of a key summer grass weed species. In the sequential-application strategy, three foundational herbicide programs applied in the winter were either mixed with pendimethalin, followed with pendimethalin in March, or applied as a split application of pendimethalin in both winter and spring. Results indicate that the addition of pendimethalin enhanced summer grass weed control throughout the crop growing season by up to 31%. Applying all or part of the pendimethalin in the spring improved control of the summer grass weed junglerice by up to 49%. The lower rate of pendimethalin applied in the spring performed as well as the high rate in the winter, suggesting opportunities for reducing herbicide inputs. Tailoring sequential herbicide programs to address specific weed challenges can be a viable strategy for improving orchard weed control without increasing herbicide use in some situations.

In glyphosate-resistant (GR) cropping systems, paraquat applied in mixtures with residual herbicides prior to crop emergence offers an alternative herbicide mode of action (MOA) to aid in GR weed management. Rice is sensitive to off-target herbicide movement; however, severity of injury can vary with herbicide, rate, and formulation. Therefore, research was conducted from 2015 to 2017 in Stoneville, MS, to characterize rice response to a sublethal concentration of paraquat applied at 84 g ai ha–1 in combination with common residual herbicides. Paraquat plus metribuzin injured rice 68% to 69% 14 and 28 d after treatment (DAT), which was 10% to 13% greater than injury following paraquat alone or paraquat plus fomesafen. Pooled across metribuzin and fomesafen treatments, paraquat reduced rough rice yields 23%. Paraquat plus 10 different residual herbicides injured rice ≥51% 28 DAT and reduced rough rice yields ≥21%. These studies indicate a severe negative impact on rice growth and development following exposure to a sublethal concentration of paraquat alone or in mixture with common residual herbicides. Therefore, applications of paraquat plus residual herbicides to fields in proximity to rice should be avoided if conditions are conducive for off-target movement.

A synthetic data set was created by incorporating results from previously published papers on antagonistic and synergistic herbicide interactions between two herbicides applied as a tank mixture or sequentially, and then analyzed on the basis of various properties of the herbicides and target plants. Generally, interactions between herbicides were antagonistic more frequently than synergistic. This trend held no matter whether the interacting herbicides were absorbed by the same or different parts of the plant, had the same or different translocating abilities, had the same or different modes of action, and regardless of whether the target plants were annual or perennial plants, or crops or weeds. Antagonistic interactions occurred much more frequently when the target plants were monocot than dicot, and in the Compositae, Gramineae, or Leguminosae than in the Chenopodiaceae or Convolvulaceae families.

Whole-plant, negative cross-resistance was studied in Conyza canadensis and Echinochloa crus-galli, important global weeds. Negative cross-resistance can be a most useful preemptive, cost-effective tool for delaying the evolution of resistance, as well as for resistance management, after resistant populations evolve. Seeds of triazine-resistant and -susceptible biotypes were collected in or near orchards that had been continuously treated with atrazine for more than 10 yr. Plants grown from the seeds were treated, in a greenhouse, with herbicides from the following chemical families: triazine, benzothiadiazole, phenyl-pyridazine, arylophenoxy-propionate, cyclohexanedione, phenoxycarboxylic acid, pyridine carboxylic acid, phosphinic acid, glycine phosphate, chloroacetamide, sulfonylurea, and bipyridylium. Eleven of the 18 herbicides tested exerted significant negative cross-resistance against atrazine-resistant weeds, ranging from 0.03 to 0.67 of the concentration required to affect the triazine-sensitive type. No synergism was found between bentazon and fluroxypyr in mixture on Conyza, even though both separately exerted negative cross-resistance. Using a mixture with half the amount of each component lowers the environmental effect of each component while controlling a broader spectrum of other weeds.

Field experiments were conducted at three locations in 2003 and 2004 to examine clethodim and quizalofop-P efficacy on spring wheat seedlings when applied alone or in tank mixtures with herbicides used to control broadleaf weeds. Clethodim at the recommended rate of 30 g/ha reduced spring wheat biomass by 63 to 98% and was only >90% in three of six site years. In contrast, quizalofop-P at the recommended rate of 36 g/ha reduced wheat biomass >90% in all cases. Clethodim or quizalofop-P could be tank mixed with 2,4-D ester, bromoxynil, or bromoxynil plus MCPA ester with little risk of reduced efficacy on wheat. However, 2,4-D amine was highly antagonistic to both herbicides. The commercial mixture of thifensulfuron plus tribenuron reduced clethodim, but not quizalofop-P, efficacy on wheat. Herbicide options exist for simultaneous control of volunteer glyphosate-resistant canola and glyphosate-resistant wheat if the latter technology were to be commercialized in the future.
