Land expropriation, where peasants’ property rights are encroached by the state, has been recognized as a primary source of social dissension in rural China. Since the end of the last century, the Administrative Litigation Law (ALL) has provided people with a legal weapon to defend themselves against violations by state power. Drawing on the theory of relative deprivation, this paper proposes that peasants are more likely to sue the state when they feel deprived. To examine this hypothesis, we first present a case study to depict the causal process and then use quantitative research to improve the external validity of our findings. We created a novel and unique database of prefecture-level administrative litigations and relative deprivation for Poisson regression analysis. The quantitative results prove that the more peasants feel relatively deprived, the more likely they are to sue the state. Furthermore, the positive effect of relative deprivation on administrative litigations has become more significant over time, implying peasants’ growing awareness of legal resistance. This paper concludes that a critical step towards eliminating social inequity and maintaining social stability in rural China is to reduce the relative deprivation of peasants by, for example, allowing them to share in land value appreciation in the process of urbanization.

A novel ionic liquid/α-ZrP (C16MIM/α-ZrP) lamellar nanocomposite was fabricated via the electrostatic self-assembly deposition technique by using exfoliated α-ZrP nanosheets and guest molecules (1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide) as building blocks under mild conditions. C16MIM/α-ZrP nanocomposite was characterized by various analytical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and synchronous thermal analyzer. The net interlayer spacing of α-ZrP determined by XRD confirmed that the C16MIM cations formed a monolayer arrangement between the α-ZrP nanosheets. The morphology and microstructure of C16MIM/α-ZrP composite were observed using SEM and TEM. The C16MIM/α-ZrP modified glass carbon electrode exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of nitrite in weak base media. The results obtained with differential pulse voltammetry demonstrated that the C16MIM/α-ZrP hybrid detected nitrite linearly in the concentration range from 7.3 μM to 1.25 mM with the detection limit of 1.26 μM (S/N = 3). Additionally, the prepared sensor showed outstanding reproducibility, high stability, and anti-interference capability.

The synergetic effects of surface smoothing exhibited during the inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICP-RIE) of free-standing polycrystalline diamonds (PCDs) were investigated. Changing the assistive gas types generated variable surface oxidation states and chemical environments that resulted in different etching rates and surface morphologies. The main reaction bond mechanism (C–O) during ICP-RIE and the ratio of C–O–C/O–C=O associated with the existence of a uniform smooth surface with root mean square (RMS) roughness of 2.36 nm were observed. An optimal process for PCD smoothing at high etching rate (4.6 μm/min) was achieved as follows: 10% gas additions of CHF3 in O2 plasma at radio frequency power of 400 W. The further etched ultra-smooth surface with RMS roughness <0.5 nm at etching rate of 0.23 μm/min that being produced by transferring this optimum recipe on single crystal diamonds with surface patterns confirmed the effectiveness of the fast smoothing approach and its feasibility for diamond surface patterning.

With the increase in personal mobility and improvements in living standards, seasonal mobility for health reasons is a well-observed phenomenon among retired people worldwide. Existing studies have shown that there are relationships between seasonal retirement mobility and wellbeing, and this study attempts to explore the effects of gender on these relationships. The framework of therapeutic mobility, which includes daily activities, sociality and context, was used to analyse this relationship. Qualitative methods including semi-structured interviews, non-participatory observation and mobile ethnography were used to collect data. This study finds that female seasonal senior migrants in Sanya have more abundant and meaningful daily activities and receive more emotional supports, and as a result, gain more benefits than males, and that these differences are related to their gender roles. Furthermore, while gender itself cannot explain all the differences, it works within the intersection of economic condition, age and family support. This study has enriched the literature on therapeutic mobility and has practical implications.

The microstructure evolution of a typical nickel-based superalloy was studied in the strain range of 0.1–0.9 at 1110 °C/0.01 s−1 by using the electron backscattered diffraction technique. It was found that the evolution of recrystallized microstructures, grain boundary characteristics, and textures was closely related to strain level. With the increasing strain level, the fraction of equiaxed dynamic recrystallization (DRX) grains increased significantly at the expense of the large non-recrystallized grains, and there was a decrease in total low angle grain boundaries fraction and a simultaneous increase in the fraction of high angle grain boundaries. In addition, the occurrence of DRX promoted the formation of Σ3 boundaries, and the coherent Σ3 boundaries were much easier to form at the strain above 0.5. On the other hand, 〈100〉 component of the textures became stronger with the increasing strains, and the lack of 〈111〉 orientations can also be observed in the textures at high strains above 0.7.

Owing to the development of new technologies, the epigenome, a second dimensional method for genome analysis has emerged. Epigenetic mechanisms, including DNA methylation, histone modifications and noncoding RNAs, regulate gene expression without changing the genetic sequence. These epigenetic mechanisms normally modulate gene expression, trans-generational effects and inherited expression states in various biological processes. Abnormal epigenetic patterns typically cause pathological conditions, including cancers, age-related diseases, and specific cartilage and bone diseases. Facing the rapidly developing epigenetic field, we reviewed epigenetic mechanisms and their involvement with the skeletal system and their role in skeletal development, homeostasis and degeneration. Finally, we discuss the prospects for the future of epigenetics.

The TiO2 hollow spheres (TiO2HS) were successfully prepared by a hydrothermal method and added to Vulcan XC-72 carbon black as the support materials for Pd nanoparticles. A facile approach to promote ethylene glycol (EG) electrooxidation in alkaline medium was carried out by the PdBi/TiO2HS-C catalyst. The results show that Pd and Bi nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed on the surface of carbon-doped TiO2 hollow spheres, the appropriate amount of Bi modification into Pd/TiO2HS-C catalyst can enhance remarkably the electrocatalytic activity for EG oxidation, in which the PdBi/TiO2HS-C (Pd:Bi = 1:0.1) catalyst exhibits excellent stability. The high electrochemical performance is attributed to the unique structure and high surface area of the TiO2HS, metal nanoparticles uniform distribution, the electronic effect between Pd and Bi as well as the bifunctional effect between metal nanoparticles and the support TiO2HS-C. The results obtained are significant for the development of new Pd-based TiO2HS-C electrocatalysts for alcohol fuel cells.

Fatigue crack growth tests of NiAl bronze (NAB) alloy heat treated at different temper temperature after quenching at 920 °C are performed using direct current potential drop method. The influences of heat treatment on the fatigue crack growth behavior of NAB alloy are investigated. The results show that the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) of NAB alloy decreases with the increase of temper temperature. A few large secondary cracks are obtained as the sample is tempered at 350 °C and the secondary cracks diminish with the increase of temper temperature. With further increasing temper temperature to 550 °C, a large number of small secondary cracks are obtained, which is responsible for its lower FCGR. The as-cast NAB alloy has a lower FCGR than that tempered at 550 °C at low stress intensity factor range (ΔK) region, and the lower FCGR is attributed to the crack deflection effect of the as-cast microstructure. At high ΔK region, the crack deflection effect diminishes, which leads to the higher FCGR of as-cast sample.

Recently, Nb-Si based alloys have attracted considerable attention as potential candidate materials for ultra-high temperature applications, because of their low densities and high melting points. However, it is still very difficult to obtain materials with a good balance of high-temperature strength and room-temperature toughness. To address this issue, microstructure control is considered to be a promising method. In applying microstructure control to Nb-Si based alloys with a eutectic reaction (L → Nbss + Nb3Si) and a eutectoid reaction (Nb3Si → Nbss + Nb5Si3), the key is the control of Nb3Si phase stability. Nbss (Nb solid solution) is considered as a ductile phase. In previous reports, it was revealed that different elements had different effects on the stability of Nb3Si. In particular, Mo and W (>3 at %) destabilize the Nb3Si phase, while Ti and Ta stabilize it, and Zr acts as an accelerator for decomposition of Nb3Si. On the other hand, Cr is known to enhance the formation of the ductile Nbss phase. In the present study, we investigated the effects of adding combinations of stabilizing, destabilizing, and accelerating elements with Cr, such as Cr and W, Cr and Ta, Cr and Zr. According to SEM observation, different microstructures were obtained with different combination of additives, and the fracture toughness at room temperature of these samples were also evaluated to reveal the effects of the microstructure on the mechanical properties of Nb-Si based alloys.

Quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) based on the multiple exciton generation (MEG) of QD are attractive in the field of photochemical cells because the improvement of conventional sensitized solar cells has been stagnant recently. The distinctive characteristics of QDs are their strong photo-response in the visible region and quantum confinement effects. Its theoretical efficiency is much higher than that of solar cell based on the single exciton generation (SEG). Moreover, QDs have tunable optical properties and band-gaps depending on the particle size. But QD materials widely used for QDSC have some disadvantages of toxicity and scarcity. On the other hand, Si as one of good QD materials is abundant and not toxic. Also, Si QD has high stability against light soaking and a high optical absorption coefficient due to quantum size effects. However, the research on Si QD is rare although the quantum effect of Si was already verified. It is one of reasons that the fabrication and collection of Si nano-particles are too difficult. Therefore, this work proposed multi-hollow plasma discharge chemical vapor deposition (CVD). It is possible to collect Si particles unlike conventional CVD and solve the problems of the wet process. The optical properties of Si particles were controlled by varying experimental conditions. In this work, Si particles were fabricated with various sizes and their characteristics were analyzed. Based on the results, Si QD was applied to Si QDSC.

In this study, an efficient approach to prepare high quality BN nanotubes (BNNTs) was developed. BNNTs with specific sizes were prepared by sublimation of ammonia borane complex (BH3NH3) using two kinds of porous alumina anodic membrane template in two independently temperature controlled furnaces in a glovebox filled with N2. The BNNTs with template were nitrided at different temperatures 1300 ∼ 1700 °C in NH3. The BNNTs of 200 – 300 nm wide°60×°m long, and 70 – 80 nm wide°×40 μm long were finally collected after removal of the template by etching of with 40 wt% NaOH solution. The fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirmed the formation of BN from BH3NH3. Ordered arrays of BNNTs were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the microstructure of these BNNTs was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the diameters of the BNNTs can be easily controlled by using templates with different pore sizes. The wall thickness of the nanotubes was increased by increasing the sublimation time or the amount of the starting BH3NH3. The crystallinity of BNNTs was improved at higher temperatures (1700 °C) in NH3.

Cement paste microstructure as revealed in backscatter SEM presents a number of inherent difficulties that interfere with implementing quantitative image analysis. An approach to overcoming these difficulties is presented, involving gray scale segmentation coupled with application of a hole filling algorithm. Using this approach it is possible to isolate the unhydrated and hydrated portions of phenograins separately, and to combine them for analysis of combined phenograins. Pores and coarse calcium hydroxide masses may also be isolated for feature analysis. Results are reported on mature cement pastes prepared at two water:cement ratios (w:c 0.45 and w:c 0.30) and with and without superplasticizer. It was found that superplasticizer greatly reduced the content and the average size of “visible pores” and increased the content and the average size of coarse CH particles compared to corresponding plain pastes. The area per hydrated phenograin was much smaller in the lower w:c ratio pastes and higher in superplasticized pastes. Among the solid features measured, unhydrated cement particles had the smallest circularity values (at about 2.7) and were the most circular features; Hydrated phenograins had the largest circularity values (at 3.5) and were the most elongated features.
