This paper retrospectively analysed the prevalence of macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MRMP) in some parts of China. Between January 2013 and December 2019, we collected 4,145 respiratory samples, including pharyngeal swabs and alveolar lavage fluid. The highest PCR-positive rate of M. pneumoniae was 74.5% in Beijing, the highest resistance rate was 100% in Shanghai, and Gansu was the lowest with 20%. The highest PCR-positive rate of M. pneumoniae was 74.5% in 2013, and the highest MRMP was 97.4% in 2019; the PCR-positive rate of M. pneumoniae for adults in Beijing was 17.9% and the MRMP was 10.48%. Among the children diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), the PCR-positive and macrolide-resistant rates of M. pneumoniae were both higher in the severe ones. A2063G in domain V of 23S rRNA was the major macrolide-resistant mutation, accounting for more than 90%. The MIC values of all MRMP to erythromycin and azithromycin were ≥ 64 μg/ml, and the MICs of tetracycline and levofloxacin were ≤ 0.5 μg/ml and ≤ 1 μg/ml, respectively. The macrolide resistance varied in different regions and years. Among inpatients, the macrolide-resistant rate was higher in severe pneumonia. A2063G was the common mutation, and we found no resistance to tetracycline and levofloxacin.

In Wang & Pan (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 918, 2021, A19), the authors developed the first ensemble-based data assimilation (DA) capability for the reconstruction and forecast of ocean surface waves, namely the EnKF-HOS method coupling an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) and the high-order spectral (HOS) method. In this work, we continue to enrich the method by allowing it to simultaneously estimate the ocean current field, which is in general not known a priori and can (slowly) vary in both space and time. To achieve this goal, we incorporate the effect of ocean current (as unknown parameters) on waves to build the HOS-C method as the forward prediction model, and obtain a simultaneous estimation of (current) parameters and (wave) states via an iterative EnKF (IEnKF) method that is necessary to handle the complexity in this DA problem. The new algorithm, named the IEnKF-HOS-C method, is first tested in synthetic problems with various forms (steady/unsteady, uniform/non-uniform) of current. It is shown that the IEnKF-HOS-C method is able to not only estimate the current field accurately, but also boost the prediction accuracy of the wave field (even) relative to the state-of-the-art EnKF-HOS method. Finally, using real data from a shipborne radar, we show that the IEnKF-HOS-C method successfully recovers the current speed that matches the in situ measurement by a floating buoy.

Through ensemble-based data assimilation, we address one of the most notorious difficulties in phase-resolved ocean wave forecast, regarding the deviation of numerical solution from the true surface elevation due to the chaotic nature of and underrepresented physics in the nonlinear wave models. In particular, we develop a coupled approach of the high-order spectral (HOS) method with the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), through which the measurement data can be incorporated into the simulation to improve the forecast performance. A unique feature in this coupling is the mismatch between the predictable zone and measurement region, which is accounted for through a special algorithm to modify the analysis equation in EnKF. We test the performance of the new EnKF–HOS method using both synthetic data and real radar measurements. For both cases (though differing in details), it is shown that the new method achieves much higher accuracy than the HOS-only method, and can retain the phase information of an irregular wave field for an arbitrarily long forecast time with sequentially assimilated data.

The molten-salt method was used to synthesize CaBi2Ta2O9 (CBTa) powder, and the influence of temperature on the structure and micromorphology of products was investigated using X-ray diffraction and the scanning and transmission electron microscope. The results showed that highly crystalline CBTa nanoplates exhibit single orthorhombic symmetry and could be obtained in the temperature range of 850–900 °C. Among which, the nanoplates prepared at 900 °C have optimal properties (average grain size of 1.7 μm and uniform size distribution). Above 900 °C, various CaO–Ta2O5 binary compounds, Bi2O3, and BiTaO4 formed due to the decomposition of CBTa and subsequent reactions of decomposition products, transforming plate-like grains to cuboid nano-particles with a small amount of prismatic grains. Possible reaction mechanisms at different synthesizing temperature were proposed. This work provides a method for the preparation of template grains to synthesize textured CaBi2Ta2O9 high-temperature piezoelectric ceramics by the template grain growth method.

Marine hydroids, the polyp stage of hydrozoans, are assumed to be carnivores and play an important role in benthic-pelagic coupling processes by regulating zooplankton populations and transferring energy. The known hydroid diets mainly consist of zooplankton as well as some benthic diatoms and metazoans, almost all of which have smaller dimensions than the polyp. In the present study, a large-scale breeding failure of the early juveniles of the ivory shell Babylonia areolata (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Babyloniidae) was found in a local aquaculture farm in Fujian, China in July 2018. About 640,000 out of 800,000 early juveniles (80%) died due to predation by a millimetre-sized colonial hydroid species that was initially overlooked. The hydrozoan species was identified as Eirene sp. (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Eirenidae) via the integration of morphological and molecular data. A laboratory feeding experiment showed that the hydroid predation led to an overall mortality of ivory shell juveniles of up to 92.6% after 48 h. The predation process was observed in the laboratory and a video showing the entire process was prepared. This is the first report of hydroids preying on gastropod juveniles, revealing a previously unknown threat to mollusc aquaculture including ivory shells. Several management practices are suggested to mitigate this newly recognized threat.

Jurassic sandstones in the Xiongcun porphyry copper–gold district, southern Lhasa subterrane, Tibet, China were analysed for petrography, major oxides and trace elements, as well as detrital zircon U–Pb and Hf isotopes, to infer their depositional age, provenance, intensity of source-rock palaeo-weathering and depositional tectonic setting. This new information provides important evidence to constrain the tectonic evolution of the southern Lhasa subterrane during the Late Triassic – Jurassic period. The sandstones are exposed in the lower and upper sections of the Xiongcun Formation. Their average modal abundance (Q21F11L68) classifies them as lithic arenite, which is also supported by geochemical studies. The high chemical index of alteration values (77.19–85.36, mean 79.96) and chemical index of weathering values (86.19–95.59, mean 89.98) of the sandstones imply moderate to intensive weathering of the source rock. Discrimination diagrams based on modal abundance, geochemistry and certain elemental ratios indicate that felsic and intermediate igneous rocks constitute the source rocks, probably with a magmatic arc provenance. The detrital zircon ages (161–243 Ma) and εHf(t) values (+10.5 to +16.2) further constrain the sandstone provenance as subduction-related Triassic–Jurassic felsic and intermediate igneous rocks from the southern Lhasa subterrane. A tectonic discrimination method based on geochemical data of the sandstones, as well as detrital zircon ages from sandstones, reveals that the sandstones were most likely deposited in an oceanic island-arc setting. These results support the hypothesis that the tectonic background of the southern Lhasa subterrane was an oceanic island-arc setting, rather than a continental island-arc setting, during the Late Triassic – Jurassic period.

In this study, a conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) or PEDOT, was used as binder in the sulfur electrode to study electrochemical performance of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. PEDOT-based sulfur electrode was compared with that of polyvinylidene difluoride binder based sulfur electrode. Different particle size sulfur materials including commercial micrometric sulfur particles and synthesized colloidal nanometric sulfur powders were chosen as active materials to study the impact of particle size on the cell performance. Different electrolytes including lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide in polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (PEGDME) or 1,3-dioxolane-dimethoxy ethane were used in the Li–S batteries to investigate the impact of electrolyte on cell performance. The PEDOT and micrometric sulfur based electrode with PEGDME electrolyte had the best cycle performance, which showed a capacity retention of 68% and specific capacity of 578 mAh/g after 100 cycles. The increased conductivity by conductive polymer and the high viscosity of PEGDME play important roles in the improvement of cycle performance.

The failure rate of a mixture of even the most standard distributions used in reliability can have a complicated shape. However, failure rates of mixtures of two carefully selected distributions will have the well-known bathtub shape. Here we show that mixtures of whole families of distribtions can have a bathtub-shaped failure rate.
