An investigation and evaluation of the redox conditions around an underground rock cavern are important from the viewpoint of the safety assessment of the subsurface geological disposal of radioactive wastes. The in situ redox conditions around a cavern excavated in Neogene pyroclastic rocks were investigated. Rock samples were collected from a tunnel wall crossing the oxidation front, and the properties of pore water seeping into small holes drilled in the tunnel wall were determined. Chemical analysis of the rock samples revealed that pyrite-bearing rocks belowthe oxidation front were oxidized by the dissolved oxygen in the groundwater infiltrating from the surface. The water properties changed with increasing oxidation of the rocks. From the amount of oxygen-consuming components in the rocks, the migration rate of the oxidation front was estimated to be ~0.2 mm/y due to the flowrate of groundwater (0.1 m/y) containing oxygen.

Obesity is characterised by low-grade inflammation, which increases the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular risks. The aim of the present study was to verify the role of multicomponent therapy in controlling the MetS, inflammation and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in obese adolescents. The second aim was to investigate the relationships between adipokines, the MetS parameters and cIMT. A total of sixty-nine obese adolescents participated in the present study and completed 1 year of multicomponent therapy (a combination of strategies involving nutrition, psychology, physical exercise and clinical therapy), and were divided according to their MetS diagnosis as follows: MetS (n 19); non-MetS (n 50). Blood analyses of glucose, lipid and adipokine concentrations (adiponectin, leptin, plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) and C-reactive protein) were collected. Insulin resistance was assessed using the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance, quantitative insulin sensitivity check index and homeostasis model assessment-adiponectin. cIMT and visceral and subcutaneous fat were estimated using ultrasonography. At baseline, the MetS group presented higher waist circumference, glucose and insulin levels, and systolic and median blood pressures compared with the non-MetS group. After therapy, both groups showed improvements in the anthropometric profile, body composition, insulin level, insulin resistance, insulin sensibility, TAG and VLDL-cholesterol, adiponectin, leptin and PAI-1 levels, blood pressure and cIMT. The prevalence of the MetS was reduced from 27·5 to 13·0 %. Metabolic syndrome patients showed resistance in the attenuation of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and leptin:adiponectin and adiponectin:leptin ratios. In the MetS group, the variation in the adiponectin:leptin ratio was correlated with variations in glucose, insulin sensibility, total cholesterol, LDL-c and systolic blood pressure. Additionally, the number of MetS parameters was correlated with the carotid measurement. Moreover, the variation in cIMT was correlated with the variations in insulin sensibility, total cholesterol and LDL-c. For the entire group, the number of MetS alterations was correlated with the leptin level and leptin:adiponectin ratio and adiponectin:leptin ratio after therapy. In conclusion, multicomponent therapy was effective in controlling the MetS, inflammation and cIMT in the obese adolescents. However, the MetS patients showed resistance in the attenuation of the atherogenic lipid profile and leptin:adiponectin ratio and adiponectin:leptin ratio. These results suggest that the MetS patients have increased cardiovascular risks, and that it is important to attempt to control the inflammatory process that occurs due to obesity in clinical practice in order to improve the health of adolescents.

We have previously shown that adult female rats exposed to intra-uterine malnutrition were normophagic, although obese and resistant to insulin-induced hypophagia. The present study aimed at examining aspects of another important catabolic component of energy homeostasis control, the hypothalamic serotonergic function, which inhibits feeding and stimulates energy expenditure. Pregnant dams were fed ad libitum or were restricted to 50 % of ad libitum intake during the first 2 weeks of pregnancy. Control and restricted 4-month-old progeny were studied. The restricted rats had increased body adiposity with normal daily food intake but failed to respond with hypophagia to an intracerebroventricular injection of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT). Stimulation, by food ingestion, of extracellular levels of serotonin in medial hypothalamus microdialysates was more pronounced and lasted longer in the restricted than in the control rats. In the restricted group, hypothalamic levels of 5-HT2C receptor protein tended to be reduced (P = 0·07) while the levels of 5-HT1B receptor and serotonin transporter proteins were significantly elevated (36 and 79 %, respectively). In conclusion, female rats undernourished in utero had normophagic obesity as adults but had an absence of serotonin-induced hypophagia and low hypothalamic levels of the 5-HT2C receptor. Compensatory adaptations for the functional serotonergic impairment were evidenced, such as an enhanced release of serotonin in response to a meal allied to up-regulated hypothalamic 5-HT1B and transporter expression. Whether these compensations will persist in later life warrants further investigation. Moreover, it cannot be ruled out that the serotonergic component of energy expenditure was already impaired, thus contributing to the observed body-fat phenotype.

We present an overview of recent astrometric results with VERA. Since 2004, we have been conducting astrometry of tens of Galactic maser sources with VERA, and recently obtained trigonometric parallaxes for several sources, with distances ranging from 180 pc to 5.3 kpc. In this paper, we briefly summarize the results for Galactic star-forming regions, including S269, Orion-KL, NGC 1333, ρ-oph, NGC 281 and others.

Reproductive performance is receiving increased attention from beef cattle producers. There are concerns that intensive selection for carcass traits might reduce the reproductive performance of females. Genetic parameters among six carcass traits and, age at first calving (AFC), gestation length (GL), days open (DO) and calving interval (CI) under year-round artificial insemination were estimated. Reproductive traits were extracted from 174005 calving records of Japanese Black cows and were analysed with 31364 carcass records. The restricted maximum likelihood procedure under animal models was used to estimate the parameters. Heritabilities of AFC, GL, DO and CI were estimated to be 0.20, 0.40, 0.05 and 0.05, respectively, and those of carcass traits were higher, ranging from 0.38 to 0.56. Genetic correlations of CI with AFC and GL were 0.25 and 0.16, respectively, while no relationship was observed between AFC and GL. Correlations among carcass traits were generally favourable and a slightly negative estimate was obtained between subcutaneous fat thickness and marbling score. Genetic correlations for AFC were -0.27 with carcass weight and -0.24 with marbling score. In contrast, GL, DO and CI were genetically independent of carcass traits. Genetic relationships between reproductive and carcass traits were generally low, and therefore serious antagonism was not observed. The results suggested that selection for carcass traits would not compromise genetic progress in reproductive traits.

Molybdenum and niobium carbides (β−Mo2C, NbC), as well as mixed carbides of molybdenum and niobium, were synthesized by the temperature-programmed carburization method (TPC) using a 20 vol% CH4/H2 gas mixture. The starting materials were MoO3, B-Nb2O5, and physical mixtures of B-Nb2O5/MoO3 with Nb/(Nb + Mo) atomic ratios varying from 0.2 to 0.8, respectively. Results from catalytic and temperatureprogrammed oxidation (TPO) measurements indicate that during the carburization of the Nb2O5/MoO3 physical mixture with Nby(Nb + Mo) = 0.8 there is, besides β−Mo2C and NbC formation, the appearance of a carbidic phase not detectable by x-ray diffraction (XRD). This phase appears to be highly active and selective for the dibenzothiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reaction.

This paper presents a new form of linear free energy (LFE) relationship for diffusive mass transport in oxides and other binary compounds. The relationship applies to a family of related compounds. For a given substance, i, solid-state diffusivity is related to the equilibrium constant Ki or the free energy of transformation, , via a transfer coefficient γ, through the expression ln Di = γ ln Ki + constant . The system investigated here is the series of suboxide intermediates of vanadium pentoxide formed during temperature-programmed synthesis of vanadium nitride. The value of γ for this series is 0.27. The diffusivity values are determined by fitting a mathematical model to the experimental data. Diffusivity data are presented graphically in contour diagrams which correlate pre-exponential values, activation energies, particle sizes, and heating rates used in the temperature-programmed syntheses. An Evans–Polanyi linear relation, , relating activation energy, Ei, to enthalpy change of transformation, , via a transfer coefficient α = 0.53, is also shown to exist for the above system. The discrepancy between α and γ is resolved by using the Horiuti concept of the stoichiometric number of the rate-determining step.

This paper presents a method for determining diffusivities in solids where the diffusing species desorbs or reacts at the external surfaces, and where the diffusivity does not vary appreciably with concentration. The method involves measuring the flux of the diffusive species out of the solid under the influence of a temperature program. A general model is developed, based on nonisothermal Fickian diffusion, which is applicable to solid particles with slab or spherical geometry. The solution is presented both as an analytical expression and as correlation charts of experimentally observable quantities. These charts are contour diagrams of the temperatures of peak diffusion rate with ln(E/R) and ln(D0/h2) as the axes, where E and D0 are the activation energy and pre-exponential terms of the diffusivity expression D = D0 exp(−E/RT), where R is the gas constant, and h the size of the particles. This paper deals exclusively with the case of oxygen diffusion in the vanadium oxide system. In this case, vanadium oxide was reduced in a reactive ammonia stream at conditions in which the surface reaction was fast compared to the diffusive transport process. Using this method the diffusion parameters were found to be D0 = 1.9 × 10−5 cm2 s−1 and E = 101 kJ/mol. The method was checked by varying the crystallite size of the vanadium oxide sample in the range 2h = 0.14−0.29 μm.

Vanadium nitride has been synthesized with a surface area of 120 m2 g−1 by temperature programmed nitridation of a foam-like vanadium oxide (35 m2 g−1), precipitated from vanadate solutions. The nitridation reaction was established to be topotactic and pseudomorphous by x-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The crystallographic relationship between the nitride and oxide was {200}//{001}. The effect of precursor geometry on the product size and shape was investigated by employing vanadium oxide solids of different morphologies.

Microstructures of two MPMG processed YBaCuO materials with and without Y2BaCuO5 (211) inclusions were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Using the MPMG process, it is possible to change the quantity of the 211 inclusions in the YBa2Cu3O7 (123) matrix. We prepared two YBaCuO samples with 0 and 30 vol. % 211 and with respective critical current density values of 2000 and 30 000 A/cm2 at 77 K and 1 T (magnetic field parallel to the c-axis). As possible pinning centers, we found stacking faults in the 123 matrix. However, we observed no appreciable change in their number and structure by introducing the 211 inclusions. Therefore, the difference in Jc values can be attributed to the 211 inclusion itself.

The observation of 8B solar Neutrinos in the Kamiokande-II detector is presented. Based on 450 days of data in the time period of January 1987 through May 1988, the measured flux obtained with Ee ≥ 9.3 MeV was 0.46 ± 0.13 (stat) ± 0.08 (sys) of the value predicted by the standard solar model. The detector and analysis methods were improved since June 1988 and the background level has been decreased by a factor of about three since then.

Unidirectional solidification processing, including Floating Zone Melting, Vertical Bridgman, and Laser Zone Melting methods for making high Tc superconducting oxides has been investigated. The effects of processing parameters, growth rate (R) and temperature gradient (G), on texture, morphology, and structures of unidirectionally grown crystals were investigated. Two different crystallization mechanisms were recognized, one is non‐equilibrium phase transformation under high GR conditions, and the other is due to local equilibrium phase transformation under low GR conditions. Strongly aligned structures were obtained at high G/R ratios with low GR value. The interrelation between the superconducting characteristics and textured structure produced were also discussed.
