Prospect Theory predicts that people tend to be more risk seeking if their reference point is perceived as a loss and more risk averse when the reference point is perceived as a gain. In line with this prediction, Franken, Georgieva, Muris and Dijksterhuis (2006) showed that young adults who had a prior experience of monetary gains make more safe choices on subsequent decisions than subjects who had an early experience of losses. There are no experimental studies on how experiencing prior gains and losses differently influences young and older adults on a subsequent decision-making task (the Iowa Gambling Task). Hence, in the current paper, adapting the methodology employed by Franken et al.’s (2006), we intended to test the generality of their effect across the life span. Overall, we found that subjects who experienced prior monetary gains or prior monetary losses did not display significant differences in safe/risky choices on subsequent performance in the Iowa Gambling task. Furthermore, the impact of prior gains and losses on risky/safe card selection did not significantly differ between young and older adults. These results showed that the effect found in the Franken et al.’s study (2006) is limited in its generality.

For the first time the meiofauna of the rocky walls of a submarine cave was studied. The cave, known as il Ciolo (Strait of Otranto, south-east Italy) is a closed tunnel about 125 m long, with a maximum depth of 6 m below sea level. The meiofauna was collected from artificial panels and natural rocky walls. This double approach enabled: (1) the description of the community's initial organization (on artificial substrata), and (2), especially for Harpacticoida, its mature composition (on rocky walls), which also helped to establish spatial differences. The collected samples yielded 70 taxa in total. Harpacticoida represented the most important group of organisms in terms of both abundance and identified taxa. The meiofauna assemblage appeared not to be affected by community age, with the exception of the very early stage. The meiofauna of the cave showed assemblage differences from the entrance to the innermost positions, but not as evident as in the case of the macrobenthos. The similarity of community composition at different ages (6, 12 and 24 months) and at different positions along the cave could be the consequence of the specimens’ vagility.

The present investigation aimed to assess whether a generalised inhibitory breakdown (Hasher & Zacks, 1988) can account for the well-documented age-related episodic memory deficits. It was argued that, according to whether significant correlations were found among all or between some of the measures of episodic memory and of inhibition included in the present investigation, it would be possible to assume that either a general or a specific, for instance, frontal lobe dependent inhibitory deficit (Dempster, 1992), was responsible for age-related memory deficit. At an empirical level, results from this investigation complement the large number of studies indicating an episodic memory deficit and an early deterioration of frontal lobes in the elderly. At a theoretical level, however, the failure to find age-related differences in the negative priming task challenges the hypothesis that cognitive ageing is due to a generalised inhibitory deficit. Furthermore, the failures to find significant correlations among performance on different tasks assumed to reflect the operation of inhibition processes support the hypothesis for the existence of multiple dissociable inhibitory processes (e.g., Kramer, Humphrey, Larish, Logan, and Strayer, 1994).

The reactivity of nanosized Ru(Pd,Pt)-doped SnO2, obtained by sol-gel synthesis, towards NO/Ar was investigated by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), Mössbauer and Electrical Resistance measurements. A sensing mechanism was proposed that involves (i) the formation of bielectronic oxygen vacancies VO, (ii) their single-ionisation to VO•, which injects electrons to SnO2 conduction band, (iii) the transfer of VO• electrons to the transition metal centers reducing them to lower oxidation states. It was suggested that the electronic exchange between oxide and transition metal is responsible for the enhancement of the reactivity in doped SnO2 with respect to the undoped material.

The empirical data do not unequivocally support a consistent fixed capacity of four chunks. We propose an alternative account whereby capacity is limited by the precision of specifying the temporal and spatial context in which items appear, that similar psychophysical constraints limit number estimation, and that short term memory (STM) is continuous with long term memory (LTM).
