Kainite, KMg(SO4)Cl⋅2.75H2O, is one of the most common hydrated sulfate minerals, and it plays an important role as a source of potassium. However, its properties and structure have, to date, been insufficiently studied. In our present work, kainite was investigated using multiple techniques, including single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The mineral is monoclinic, C2/m, a = 19.6742(2), b = 16.18240(10), c = 9.49140(10) Å, β = 94.8840(10)°, V = 3010.86(5) Å3 and Z = 16. The structure was refined to R1 = 0.0230 for 3080 unique observed reflections with |Fo| ≥ 4σF. The complex hydrogen bonding system for kainite is described for the first time. The structure of kainite contains seven symmetrically independent sites occupied by water molecules, six of which are strongly bonded to Mg2+ cations while the seventh resides in the framework cavities. The acceptors of the hydrogen bonds are either chloride anions, neighbouring water molecules or oxygens atoms of sulfate groups. A bifurcated hydrogen bond was described for one of the water molecules. Based on the analysis of the crystal structure, we have confirmed and propose the correct formula for kainite as KMg(SO4)Cl⋅2.75H2O. The thermal studies of kainite in the temperature range of –150°C to +600°C indicate its stability to 190°C. The decomposition products are K2Mg2(SO4)3, KCl and K2SO4. The thermal expansion was calculated, which for kainite has a character typical for monoclinic crystals and similar to the compressibility tensor described earlier.

We report the crystal structures of eight new synthetic multinary Rb–Cu sulfates representing four new structure types: δ-Rb2Cu(SO4)2, γ-RbNaCu(SO4)2, γ-RbKCu(SO4)2, Rb2Cu2(SO4)3, Rb2Cu2(SO4)3(H2O), β-Rb2Cu(SO4)Cl2, β-Rb4Cu4O2(SO4)4⋅(Cu0.83Rb0.17Cl) and Rb2Cu5O(SO4)5. The determination of their crystal structures significantly expands the family of anhydrous copper sulfates. Some of the anhydrous rubidium copper sulfates obtained turned out to be isostructural to known compounds and minerals. Rb2Cu5O(SO4)5 is isostructural to cesiodymite, CsKCu5O(SO4)5 and cryptochalcite, K2Cu5O(SO4)5. Rb2Cu2(SO4)3 also shows an example of crystallisation in the already known structure type first observed for synthetic K2Cu2(SO4)3. ‘Hydrolangbeinite’, Rb2Cu2(SO4)3(H2O), was formed as a result of a minor hydration of the initial mixture of reagents.

The minerals and synthetic framework compounds of the A2Cu(SO4)2 series demonstrate a vivid example of morphotropism with the formation of structural types depending on the size of the cations residing in the cavities of the [Cu(SO4)2]2– open framework. To date, five types (α, β, γ, δ and ε) can be distinguished. We propose to call this series of compounds ‘saranchinaite-type’, as the stoichiometry A2Cu(SO4)2 was first encountered during the discovery and description of saranchinaite, Na2Cu(SO4)2.

The discovery of β-Rb2Cu(SO4)Cl2, a new monoclinic polymorph of chlorothionite, seems to be of particular interest considering the recently discovered interesting magnetic properties of synthetic K2Cu(SO4)X2 (X = Cl and Br) and Na2Cu(SO4)Cl2.

In these new structural architectures, a number of features have been revealed that were seldom observed previously. The first is the bidentate coordination of the sulfate tetrahedron via edge-sharing with the Cu2+-centred coordination polyhedron. Until recently, such coordination was known only for the chlorothionite structure. The second is formation of ‘high-coordinate’ CuO7 polyhedra. The structures of the new compounds suggest that such coordination is not in fact so uncommon, at least among anhydrous alkali copper sulfates. All of the described features clearly indicate the importance of further systematic studies of anhydrous copper-sulfate systems. Their exploration, particularly of the new copper-oxide substructures with new coordination environments, is highly likely to lead to new potentially interesting magnetic properties due to the unusual arrangements of magnetically active Cu2+ cations.

In addition to experimental details on the synthesis of rubidium analogues of anhydrous potassium and sodium sulfates, this work also provides an analysis and a brief review of the geochemistry of rubidium in volcanic environments.

Hydration processes of primary anhydrous minerals as well as dehydration of the hydrated phases are relevant not only for answering geochemical and petrological questions, but are also interesting in the context of the theory of the ‘Evolution of minerals’. Our study of the evolution of anhydrous exhalative sulfates in hydration and dehydration processes has demonstrated the complexity of the processes for a number of minerals from the active high-temperature fumaroles of Tolbachik volcano (chalcocyanite Cu(SO4), dolerophanite Cu2O(SO4), alumoklyuchevskite K3Cu3AlO2(SO4)4 and itelmenite Na2CuMg2(SO4)4). Hydration and dehydration experiments were carried out for all four minerals using powder X-ray diffraction. A typical structural characteristic of several anhydrous copper sulfate minerals of fumarolic origin is the presence of oxygen-centred OCu4 tetrahedra. These are absent in the structures of all known hydrated minerals or synthetic compounds of the class under consideration. Hydration of minerals initially containing O2– anions as part of oxocomplexes, proceeds with sequential formation of a large series of hydroxysalts. On the contrary, hydration of itelmenite with its relatively complex ‘initial’ structure, but without additional oxygen atoms that are strong Lewis bases, results in formation of simpler hydrates. The lower the temperature and the larger the excess of water, the stronger the tendency of the cations to adopt higher hydration numbers thus outcompeting the sulfate anions as ligands. Ultimately, the water molecules completely expel the bridging sulfate anions from the metal coordination sphere yielding relatively simple fully hydrated structures.

A new mineral glikinite, ideally Zn3O(SO4)2, was found in high-temperature exhalative mineral assemblages in the Arsenatnaya fumarole, Second scoria cone of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption (1975–1976), Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Glikinite is associated closely with langbeinite, lammerite-β, bradaczekite, euchlorine, anhydrite, chalcocyanite and tenorite. It is monoclinic, P21/m, a = 7.298(18), b = 6.588(11), c = 7.840(12) Å, β = 117.15(3)°, V = 335.4(11) Å3 and R1 = 0.046. The eight strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d in Å (I) (hkl)] are: 6.969(56)(00$\bar{1}$), 3.942(52)(101), 3.483(100)(00$\bar{2}$), 3.294(49)(020), 2.936(43)(120), 2.534(63)(201), 2.501(63)(20$\bar{3}$) and 2.395(86)(02$\bar{2}$). The chemical composition determined by electron-microprobe analysis is (wt.%): ZnO 42.47, CuO 19.50, SO3 39.96, total 101.93. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of O = 9 apfu is Zn2.07Cu0.97S1.98O9 and the simplified formula is Zn3O(SO4)2. Glikinite is a Zn,Cu analogue of synthetic Zn3O(SO4)2. The crystal structure of glikinite is based on OZn4 tetrahedra sharing common corners, thus forming [Zn3O]4+ chains. Sulfate groups interconnect [Zn3O]4+ chains into a 3D framework.

The new mineral antofagastaite, ideally Na2Ca(SO4)2·1.5H2O, was found in the oxidation zone of sulfide–quartz veins at the abandoned Coronel Manuel Rodríguez mine, Mejillones, Antofagasta Province, Antofagasta Region, Chile. It is associated with sideronatrite, metasideronatrite, aubertite, gypsum, ferrinatrite, glauberite, amarillite and an unidentified Fe phosphate. Antofagastaite occurs as prismatic crystals up to 0.5 mm × 1 mm × 5 mm, elongated along [010], typically combined in open-work aggregates up to 1 cm across. Antofagastaite is transparent and colourless, with vitreous lustre. It is brittle; the Mohs’ hardness is ca 3. Cleavage is distinct on (001). Dmeas. is 2.42(1) and Dcalc. is 2.465 g cm−3. Antofagastaite is optically biaxial (–), α = 1.489(2), β = 1.508(2), γ = 1.510(2) and 2Vmeas. = 40(10)°. The IR spectrum is reported. Chemical composition (wt.%, electron microprobe, H2O determined by gas chromatography) is: Na2O 20.85, CaO 17.42, SO3 52.56, H2O 7.93, total 98.76. The empirical formula (based on 8 O atoms belonging to sulfate anions per formula unit with all H belonging to H2O molecules) is Na2.06Ca0.95S2.01O8·1.35H2O. Antofagastaite is monoclinic, P21/m, a = 6.4596(4), b = 6.8703(5), c = 9.4685(7) Å, β = 104.580(4)°, V = 406.67(5) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest reflections of the powder XRD pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 9.17 (100) (001), 5.501 (57) (011), 3.437 (59) (020), 3.058 (43) (003), 2.918 (50) (2¯11), 2.795 (35) (013) and 2.753 (50) (121, 201). The crystal structure was solved based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, R1 = 5.71%. The structure of antofagastaite consists of ordered and disordered blocks and is related to syngenite K2Ca(SO4)2·H2O. Incorporation of additional H2O molecules in the syngenite-type structure results in disorder of the one of the two tetrahedral sulfate groups occurring in antofagastaite. In addition to the above-reported type material, antofagastaite together with syngenite and blödite occurs in the Arsenatnaya fumarole, Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka, Russia.

Rumseyite, ideally [Pb2OF]Cl, is a new mineral species which is associated with calcite, cerussite, diaboleite, hydrocerussite and undifferentiated Mn oxides in a small cavity in 'hydrocerussite' from a manganese pod at Merehead quarry, Somerset, England. Rumseyite is tetragonal, I4/mmm, a = 4.065(1), c = 12.631(7) Å, V = 208.7(1) Å3, Z = 2. The mineral is translucent pale orange-brown with a white streak and vitreous lustre. It is brittle with perfect {100} cleavage; Dcalc = 7.71 g cm–3 (for the ideal formula, [Pb2OF]Cl). The mean refractive index in air at 589 nm is 2.15. The six strongest reflections in the X-ray powder-diffraction pattern [dmeas in Å, (Irel), (hkl)] are as follows: 2.923(100)(013), 2.875(68)(110), 3.848(41)(011), 6.306(17)(002), 1.680(14)(123), 2.110(12)(006). The crystal structure of rumseyite is based on alternating [OFPb2] and Cl layers. Rumseyite is related to other layered Pb oxyhalides. Fluorine and oxygen are statistically disordered over one crystallographic site. Rumseyite is named in honour of Michael Scott (Mike) Rumsey (1980– ), Curator and Collections Manager at the NHM (London), who discovered the mineral. The mineral and name have been approved by the IMA Commission on New Mineral Names and Classification (IMA 2011-091). The holotype specimen is in the collections of the Natural History Museum, London (specimen number BM1970,110).

The crystal structure of new lead chloride arsenite, Pb5(As3+O3)Cl7 [orthorhombic, Pbcn, a = 16.894(2), b = 10.913 (1), c = 16.760(2) Å, V = 3090.1(7) Å3], from the historic slags of Lavrion, Greece, has been solved by direct methods and refined to R1 = 0.069. The structure contains five symmetrically unique Pb, one As, eight Cl and three O sites. The As atom forms three nearly equal As—O bonds which result in the formation of an AsO3 trigonal pyramid with As at the apex. The Pbl. Pb2, Pb3 and Pb4 atoms are bonded to the AsO3 groups via Pb2+—O bonds to form complex [Pb4(AsO3)] chains parallel to the b axis. The Pb(5) atom is coordinated solely by Cl– anions. The resulting Pb(5)Cl7 polyhedra share common edges and corners to produce bent chains parallel to the c axis. A short compilation of structural features of known lead chloride arsenites is given.

Yellow needles of 'iodolaurionite', Pb(OH)I, and a novel compound Pb2O(OH)I, have been prepared by hydrothermal reactions of PbO and PbI2 at 170°C. The crystal structure of 'iodolaurionite', Pb(OH)I (orthorhombic, Pnma, a = 7.8244(8), b = 4.2107(4), c = 10.4724(10) Å, V = 345.03(6) Å3, Z = 4) has been refined to R1 = 0.041 for 129 independent observed reflections. The structure is based on the OHPb3 triangles sharing common edges to produce single [OHPb]+ chains extending along the b axis and parallel to the ab plane. The three-dimensional integrity of the structure is provided by the Pb–I bonds and the O–H···I hydrogen bonding. The structure is isotypic with that of laurionite, Pb(OH)Cl. The crystal structure of Pb2O(OH)I (monoclinic, C2/m, a = 13.711(3), b = 4.0975(10), c = 9.584(2) Å, β = 110.64(1)°, V = 503.9(2) Å3, Z = 4), has been solved by direct methods and refined to R1 = 0.053 for 586 independent observed reflections. In the structure of Pb2O(OH)I, O(1)Pb4 tetrahedra link together by sharing edges and corners to form [OPb2]2+ chains similar to those observed in sidpietersite. The O(2) atoms belong to hydroxyl groups attached to both sides of the chains to produce novel [O(OH)Pb2]+ 1D units. The [O(OH)Pb2]+ units are extended parallel to the b axis and lie within the bc plane. The [O(OH)Pb2]+ units are linked together via hydrogen bonding in the (100) plane and by weak Pb–I bonds in the [100] direction. The [O(OH)Pb2]+ bands can be obtained from the [OPb] layer of OPb4 tetrahedra present in the structure of tetragonal PbO (litharge). The continuous [OPb] layer has to be broken into [O2Pb2] bands containing 3- and 4-coordinated O atoms in the 1:1 ratio with subsequent protonation of the 3-coordinated O sites. Relations of Pb(OH)I and Pb2O(OH)I to known Pb hydroxy- and oxyhalides are described briefly.

Rickturnerite, which has the ideal formula Pb7O4[Mg(OH)4](OH)Cl3, is a new mineral from Torr Works (Merehead) quarry, near the village of Cranmore in Somerset, United Kingdom. It occurs as pale emerald green to grey porous aggregates of disordered interwoven minute fibrous crystals with mereheadite, cerussite, calcite, aragonite, mimetite, hydrocerussite, “plumbonacrite” and an uncharacterized lead oxychloride, in cavities inside a manganite and pyrolusite pod. The crystals are typically less than 5 μm wide and 200 μm long, but they can reach 40 × 100 μm in cross-section and over 1 mm in length. The mineral is translucent with a vitreous lustre and each needle is brittle with an indistinct cleavage, breaking with a splintery fracture. The streak is white, the Mohs hardness ∼3 and the density calculated using the empirical formula 6.886 g cm–3. Electron microprobe analyses yielded PbO 87.7, MgO 1.79, CuO 0.14, Cl 6.62 wt.%; H2O was calculated on the basis of structural considerations as 2.27 wt.% totalling 97.02 wt.%. A charge-balanced formula, based on 12 anions, is Pb7.16Mg0.81Cu0.03Cl3.40H4.60O8.60. Rickturnerite is orthorhombic Pnma, with a = 5.8024(6), b = 22.717(2), c = 25.879(3) Å, V = 3411.2(6) Å3 and Z = 8. The diffraction pattern contains strong reflections that define a subcell with a = 5.8034(5), b = 11.3574(9), c = 12.939(2) Å, V = 852.9(6) Å3 (space group Pmm2 which is related to the real unit cell by the transformation matrix [100/020/002]), and weak reflections that correspond to doubled b and c parameters. Since the difference between the large and small cells is only in a number of split and low-occupancy positions in the disordered region of the structure we provide the description of the subcell structure. The five strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [listed as dobs (Å), Iobs, (hkl)] are as follows: 6.474, 100, (400); 3.233, 73, (107); 2.867, 57, (705); 5.636, 44, (011); 3.112, 31, (802). The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined using 1318 unique reflections to R1 = 0.063. The structure is composed of a fully ordered part consisting of double [O2Pb3]2+ chains of oxocentred [OPb4] tetrahedra extended along the b-axis, which together with Cl– ions form 2-dimensional blocks parallel to (001). In between these blocks, there is a disordered region containing ordered [Mg(OH)6]4– octahedra and low-occupancy Pb and OH sites with a slight degree of ordering; these produce the weak supercell reflections.

Three new valleriite-group minerals, ekplexite (Nb,Mo)S2·(Mg1−xAlx)(OH)2+x, kaskasite (Mo,Nb)S2·(Mg1−xAlx)(OH)2+x and manganokaskasite (Mo,Nb)S2·(Mn1−xAlx)(OH)2+x are found at Mt Kaskasnyunchorr, Khibiny alkaline complex, Kola Peninsula, Russia. They occur in fenite consisting of orthoclase−anorthoclase and nepheline with fluorophlogopite, corundum, pyrrhotite, pyrite, rutile, monazite-(Ce), graphite, edgarite, molybdenite, tungstenite, alabandite, etc. Ekplexite forms lenticular nests up to 0.2 mm × 1 mm × 1 mm consisting of near-parallel, radiating or chaotic aggregates of flakes. Kaskasite and manganokaskasite mainly occur as flakes and their near-parallel ‘stacks’ (kaskasite: up to 0.03 mm × 1 mm × 1.5 mm; manganokaskasite: up to 0.02 mm × 0.5 mm × 1 mm) epitaxially overgrow Ti-bearing pyrrhotite partially replaced by Ti-bearing pyrite. All three new minerals are opaque, ironblack, with metallic lustre. Cleavage is {001} perfect and mica-like. Flakes are very soft, flexible and inelastic. Mohs hardness is ∼1. D(calc.) = 3.63 (ekplexite), 3.83 (kaskasite) and 4.09 (manganokaskasite) g cm−3. In reflected light all these minerals are grey, without internal reflections. Anisotropism and bireflectance are very strong and pleochroism is strong. The presence of OH groups and an absence of H2O molecules are confirmed by the Raman spectroscopy data. Chemical data (wt.%, electron probe) for ekplexite, kaskasite and manganokaskasite, respectively, are: Mg 6.25, 5.94, 0.06; Al 4.31, 3.67, 3.00; Ca 0.00, 0.04, 0.00; V 0.86, 0.16, 0.15; Mn 0.00, 0.23, 11.44; Fe 0.44, 1.44, 2.06; Nb 18.17, 13.39, 14.15; Mo 15.89, 23.18, 20.08; W 8.13, 7.59, 9.12; S 27.68, 27.09, 24.84; O 16.33, 15.66, 13.36; H (calc.) 1.03, 0.99, 0.89; total 99.09, 99.08, 99.15. The empirical formulae calculated on the basis of 2 S a.p.f.u. are: ekplexite: (Nb0.45Mo0.38W0.10V0.04)S0.97S2· (Mg0.60Al0.37Fe0.02)S0.99(OH)2.36; kaskasite: (Mo0.57Nb0.34W0.10V0.01)S1.02S2· (Mg0.58Al0.32Fe0.06Mn0.01)S0.97(OH)2.32; manganokaskasite: (Mo0.54Nb0.39W0.13V0.01)S1.07S2· (Mn0.54Al0.29Fe0.10Mg0.01)S0.94(OH)2.28. All three minerals are trigonal, space groups Pm1, P3m1 or P321, one-layer polytypes (Z = 1). Their structures are non-commensurate and consist of the MeS2-type (Me = Nb, Mo, W) sulfide modules and the brucite-type hydroxide modules. Parameters of the sulfide (main) sub-lattices (a, c in Å, V in Å3) are: 3.262(2), 11.44(2), 105.4(4) (ekplexite); 3.220(2), 11.47(2), 102.8(4) (kaskasite); 3.243(3), 11.61(1), 105.8(3) (manganokaskasite). Parameters of the hydroxide sub-lattices (a, c in Å, V in Å3) are: 3.066(2), 11.52(2), 93.8(4) (ekplexite); 3.073(2), 11.50(2), 94.0(4) (kaskasite); 3.118(3), 11.62(1), 97.9(2) (manganokaskasite). Ekplexite was named from the Greek word έκπληξη meaning surprise, for its exotic combination of major chemical constituents, kaskasite after the discovery locality and manganokaskasite as a Mn analogue of kaskasite.

The crystal structure of mereheadite (monoclinic, Cm, a = 17.372(1), b = 27.9419(19), c = 10.6661(6) Å, β = 93.152(5)°, V = 5169.6(5) Å3) has been solved by direct methods and refined to R1 = 0.058 for 6279 unique observed reflections. The structure consists of alternating Pb–O/OH blocks and Pb–Cl sheets oriented parallel toth e (201) plane and belongs toth e 1:1 type of lead oxide halides with PbO blocks. It contains 30 symmetrically independent Pb positions, 28 of which belong to the PbO blocks, whilst two positions (Pb12 and Pb16) are located within the tetragonal sheets of the Cl– anions. Mereheadite is thus the first naturally occurring lead oxychloride mineral with inter-layer Pb ions. The coordination configurations of the Pb atoms of the PbO blocks are distorted versions of the square antiprism. In one half of the coordination hemisphere, they are coordinated by hard O2– and OH– anions whose number varies from three to four, whereas the other coordination hemisphere invariably consists of four soft Cl– anions located at the vertices of a distorted square. The Pb12 and Pb16 atoms in between the PbO blocks have an almost planar square coordination of four Cl– anions. These PbCl4 squares are complemented by triangular TO3 groups (T = B, C) so that a sevenfold coordination is achieved. The Pb–O/OH block in mereheadite can be obtained from the ideal PbO block by the following list of procedures: (1) removal of some PbO4 groups that results in the formation of square-shaped vacancies; (2) insertion of TO3 groups into these vacancies; (3) removal of some Pb atoms (that correspond to the Pb1A and Pb2A sites), thus transforming coordination of associated O sites from tetrahedral OPb4 tot riangular OHPb3; and (4) replacement of two O2– anions by one OH– anion with twofold coordination; this results in formation of the 1×2 elongated rectangular vacancy. The structural formula that can be derived on the basis of the results of single-crystal structure determination is Pb47O24(OH)13Cl25(BO3)2(CO3). Welch et al. (1998) proposed the formula Pb2O(OH)Cl for mereheadite, which assumes that neither borate nor carbonate is an essential constituent of mereheadite and their presence in the mineral is due to disordered replacements of Cl– anions. However, our study demonstrates that this is not the case, as BO3 and CO3 groups have well-defined structural positions confined in the vacancies of the Pb–O/OH blocks and are therefore essential constituents. Our results also show that mereheadite is not a polymorph of blixite, but is in fact related to symesite. Symesite thus becomes the baseline member of a group of structurallyrelated minerals.

Two new lead oxychloride minerals, hereroite [Pb32(O, ☐)21](AsO4)2((Si,As,V,Mo)O4)2Cl10 and vladkrivovichevite [Pb32O18][Pb4Mn2O]Cl14(BO3)8·2H2O occur in association with asisite, damaraite, kombatite, sahlinite, copper, quartz, barysilite, Mn silicates and a number of Mn oxyhydroxide minerals on a specimen from the Kombat mine in Namibia. The minerals formed as late-stage products of hydrothermal reworking of primary sulfide minerals.

Hereroite is monoclinic, C2/c with a = 23.14(1), b = 22.65(1), c = 12.39(1) Å, β = 102.00(5)°, V = 6351.6(41) Å3 from powder-diffraction data and a = 23.139(4), b = 22.684(4), c = 12.389(2) Å, β = 102.090(3)°, V = 6358.8(18) Å3 from single-crystal data. It is bright orange, with white streak and adamantine lustre. It is brittle with no observed parting or cleavage and has a conchoidal fracture. The calculated density is 8.15 g cm–3. The mean refractive index in air at 589 nm is 2.38. The six strongest reflections in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [d in Å, (I), (hkl)] are as follows: 2.982(100)(51); 2.795(47)(80); 1.986(24)(8); 1.641(24)(11..); 3.512(23)(61); 3.901(21)(511). Hereroite is named for the Herero people, one of the indigenous tribal groupings in the region where the Kombat mine is located.

Vladkrivovichevite is orthorhombic, Pmmn with a = 12.87(5), b = 27.7(4), c = 11.46(3) Å, V = 4080.1(5) Å3, from powder-diffraction data and a = 12.759(1), b = 27.169(4), c = 11.515(1) Å, V = 3992.0(9) Å3, Z = 2, from single-crystal data. It is pale greenish yellow, with white streak and adamantine lustre. It is brittle with no observed parting or cleavage and has a conchoidal fracture. The calculated density is 7.40 g cm–3. The mean refractive indices in air at 589 nm are 2.30 and 2.34. The six strongest reflections in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [d in Å, (I), (hkl)] are as follows: 2.860(100)(370); 2.733(84)(073); 3.707(49)(073); 3.068(37)(401); 2.075(32)(473); 1.601(32)(3.14.3). Vladkrivovichevite is named in honour of Prof. Dr Vladimir Gerasimovich Krivovichev (b. 24.04.1946), Head of the Department of Mineralogy, Geological Faculty, St Petersburg State University.

The crystal structures of hereroite and vladkrivovichevite consist of alternating litharge-like O – Pb double layers and chlorine sheets and both are structurally related to other layered lead oxychlorides. In hereroite, tetrahedral AsO4 and (Si, As, V, Mo)O4 groups locate in defects within the O – Pb block, which combines square 'symesite-type' and double-square 'kombatite-type' cavities in its crystal structure. The structure of vladkrivovichevite is based on O – Pb derivative blocks with the interlayer occupied by Cl– anions and oxocentred OPb4Mn2 octahedra whose eight triangular faces are capped by triangular borate anions, BO33–.

Oxo-magnesio-hastingsite, ideally NaCa2(Mg2Fe3+3)(Al2Si6)O22O2, is a new anhydrous amphibole from the Deeti volcanic cone in the Gregory rift (northern Tanzania). The mineral occurs as megacrysts up to 12 cm in size in crystal-rich tuff. Oxo-magnesio-hastingsite is brown with a vitreous lustre and has a perfect {110} cleavage. The measured density is 3.19(1) g/cm3. Ferri-kaersutite is biaxial (–), α = 1.706 (2), β = 1.715(2), γ = 1.720(2) (Na light, 589 nm). 2V (calc.) = 73°. Dispersion: r > v, weak; orientation: Y = b; Z ^ c = 8°; pleochroism: strong, Z: dark brown, Y: brown, X: light brown. The average chemical formula of the mineral derived from electron microprobe analyses, Mössbauer spectroscopy and direct water determination is (Na0.67K0.33)Σ1.00(Ca1.87Na0.14Mn0.01)Σ2.02(Mg3.27Fe3+1.25Ti0.44Al0.08)Σ5.04(Al1.80Si6.20O22)(O1.40OH0.60)Σ2.00. It has monoclinic symmetry, space group C2/m and unit-cell parameters a = 9.8837(3), b = 18.0662(6), c = 5.3107(2) Å, b = 105.278(1)o, V = 914.77(5) Å3, Z = 2. The five strongest powder-diffraction lines [d in Å, (I/Io), hkl] are: 3.383 (62) (131), 2.708 (97) (151), 2.555 (100) (), 2.349 (29) () and 2.162 (36) (261). The isotopic composition of H and O, as well as the concentration of trace elements in oxo-magnesio-hastingsite suggest its formation from a melt originated from a mantle source metasomatized by slab-derived fluids.

Transparent prismatic crystals of Pb2(AsO2OH)Cl2 were collected in black metallurgical slag on the coast in the Punta Zeza area, 3 km south of the town of Lavrion, Greece. Analyses by energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) provided the following chemical composition: PbO 73.04, As2O3 15.97, Cl 11.42, O=Cl –2.58, total 97.85 wt.%. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of As = 1 is HxPb2.03(AsO3)1.00Cl1.995 (x = 0.96). The infrared spectrum of Pb2(AsO2OH)Cl2 has characteristic AsO33– bands at 707 and 594 cm–1, O–H stretching vibrations at 3310 and 2900 cm–1 and a band at 1107 cm–1 which is assigned to As–O–H bending vibrations. The structure, which is monoclinic P21/m, a = 6.4235(8), b = 5.5399(7), c = 9.321(1) Å, β = 90.767(2)°, V = 331.67(7) Å3, R1 = 0.035, is identical to that of synthetic Pb2(AsO2OH)Cl2 and contains two symmetrically unique Pb sites and one As site. The crystal structure is based on [Pb2AsO2OH]2+ double chains interconnected via weak Pb–Cl bonds to produce a three-dimensional framework which is closely related to that of Pb oxysalt minerals containing [O2Pb3]2+ chains of oxocentred [OPb4]6+ tetrahedra including mendipite, damaraite, rickturnerite and plumboselite.

The crystal structure of chloroxiphite, Pb3CuO2(OH)2Cl2, from Merehead Quarry (monoclinic, P21/m, a = 6.6972(8), b = 5.7538(5), c = 10.4686(14) Å,β = 97.747(10)°, V = 399.72(8) Å3) has been refined to R1 = 0.041. The structure contains three symmetrically unique Pb sites and one Cu site. The strong distortion of the Pb2+ coordination polyhedra is due to the stereoactivity of the s2 lone electron pairs on the Pb2+ cations. The Cu-site is coordinated by four OH- groups to form an almost planar Cu(OH)4 square that is complemented by two apical Cl– anions, forming an elongated [Cu(OH)4Cl2] octahedron. Because of the large size and variability of coordination polyhedra around Pb2+ cations and the strength of the Me–O bonds in comparison to the Me–Cl bonds (Me = metal), it is convenient to describe the structure of chloroxiphite in terms of oxocentred OPb4 tetrahedra. The O1 atom is tetrahedrally coordinated by four Pb2+ cations forming relatively short and strong O–Pb bonds. The OPb4 tetrahedra link together via common edges to form [O2Pb3]2+ double chains. The difference between chloroxiphite and other natural oxyhalides is the presence of Cu2+ cations which form an independent structural unit that links to units formed by OPb4 tetrahedra. In this sense, chloroxiphite can be considered as a modular structure consisting of both strong cation- and anion-centred units.

Cerianite-(Ce), ideally CeO2, occurs as rounded grains up to 5 μm across in a block of highly altered calcite carbonatite lava from the Kerimasi volcano, and as euhedral crystals up to 200 μm across in carbonatite-derived eluvial deposits in the Kisete and Loluni explosion craters in the Gregory Rift, northern Tanzania. X-ray powder diffraction data (a = 5.434(5) Å) and Raman spectroscopy (minor vibration modes at 184 and 571 cm—1 in addition to a strong signal at 449 cm—1) suggest the presence of essential amounts of large cations and oxygen vacancies in the Kisete material. Microprobe analyses reveal that the mineral contains both light and heavy trivalent rare earth elements (REE) (7.9-15.5 wt.% LREE2O3 and 4.9-9.7 wt.% HREE2O3), and that it is enriched in yttrium (7.1 — 14.5 wt.% Y2O3) and fluorine (2.2—3.5 wt.%). Single-crystal structure refinement of the mineral confirms a fluorite-type structure with a cation—anion distance of 2.3471(6) Å. The cerianite-(Ce) is considered to be a late-stage secondary mineral in the carbonatitic rocks.

The new mineral somersetite, has been found at Torr Works (‘Merehead quarry’) in Somerset, England, United Kingdom. Somersetite is green or white (typically it is similar visually to hydrocerussite-like minerals but with a mint-green tint), forms plates and subhedral grains up to 5 mm across and up to 2 mm thick. In bi-coloured crystals it forms very thin intergrowths with plumbonacrite. The empirical formula of somersetite is Pb8.00C5.00H4.00O20. The simplified formula is Pb8O(OH)4(CO3)5, which requires: PbO = 87.46, CO2 = 10.78, H2O = 1.76, total 100.00 wt.%.

The infrared spectrum of somersetite is similar to that of plumbonacrite and, to a lesser degree, hydrocerussite. Somersetite is hexagonal, P63/mmc, a = 5.2427(7), c = 40.624(6) Å, V = 967.0(3) Å3 and Z = 2. The eight strongest reflections of the powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern [d,Å(I)(hkl)] are: 4.308(33)(103), 4.148(25)(104), 3.581(40)(107), 3.390(100)(108), 3.206(55)(109), 2.625(78)(110), 2.544(98)(0.0.16) and 2.119(27)(1.0.17). The crystal structure was solved from single-crystal XRD data giving R1 = 0.031. The structure of somersetite is unique and consists of the alternation of the electroneutral plumbonacrite-type [Pb5O(OH)2(CO3)3]0 and hydrocerussite-type [Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2]0 blocks separated by stereochemically active lone electron pairs on Pb2+. There are two blocks of each type per unit cell in the structure, which corresponds to the formula [Pb5O(OH)2(CO3)3][Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2] or Pb8O(OH)4(CO3)5 in a simplified representation. The 2D blocks are held together by weak Pb–O bonds and weak interactions between lone pairs.

The hydrocerussite-related phase, NaPb5(CO3)4(OH)3, has been found as colourless lamellar crystals in cavities within a pebble of the ancient marine slag collected in the Pacha Limani area of the Lavrion mining district, Attiki, Greece. This phase of anthropogenic origin was characterized by electron microprobe, infrared spectroscopy, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The unique crystal structure (P63/mmc, a = 5.2533(11), c = 29.425(6) Å, V = 703.3(3) Å3 and R1 = 0.047) is based upon structurally and chemically different electroneutral blocks. Each of the blocks can be split into separate sheets. The outer sheets in each block are topologically identical and have the composition [PbCO3]0. The [Pb(OH)2]0 lead hydroxide sheet is sandwiched between the two [PbCO3]0 sheets resulting in the formation of the first block [Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2]0 structurally and compositionally identical to that one in hydrocerussite Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2. Similarly the [Na(OH)]0 sheet is sandwiched between another two [PbCO3]0 sheets thus forming the [NaPb2(OH)(CO3)2]0 block described previously in the structure of abellaite NaPb2(OH)(CO3)2. Stereochemically active lone electron pairs on Pb2+ cations are located between the blocks. There are two blocks of each type per unit cell, which corresponds to the following formula: [Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2][NaPb2(OH)(CO3)2] or NaPb5(CO3)4(OH)3 in the simplified representation. The formation of NaPb5(CO3)4(OH)3 in Lavrion slags is by the contact of lead-rich slags with the sea water over the last two thousand years.

Yeomanite, Pb2O(OH)Cl, is a new Pb-oxychloride found in the manganese pod mineral assemblage at Merehead (Torr Works) Quarry, near Cranmore, Somerset, England. Yeomanite is named in joint recognition of Mrs Angela Yeoman (1931–) and her company, Foster Yeoman, who operated Merehead Quarry for aggregate until 2006. The mineral is normally white, occasionally grey, with a white streak and a vitreous to transparent lustre. Invariably intimately associated with mendipite, yeomanite appears to be formed of small, twisted, rope-like fibres growing from the end of columnar mendipite masses, forming loose mats and strands resembling asbestos. Individual fibres are generally <8 mm long, but exceptionally may reach up to 15 mm. There is a perfect cleavage parallel to the long axis of the fibres but this is masked by the fibrous nature, especially as individual fibres break easily. The Dcalc for the ideal formula is 7.303 g/cm3. The mean RI in air at 589 nm is 2.27. The eight strongest reflections in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [(d in Å) (Intensity) (hkl)] are: 2.880(100)(113); 2.802(78)(006); 3.293(61)(200); 3.770(32)(011); 2.166(22)(206); 1.662(19)(119); 2.050(18)(303); 3.054(17)(105) Yeomanite is orthorhombic, Pnma, a = 6.585(10), b = 3.855(6), c = 17.26(1) Å, V = 438(1) Å3, Z = 4. Yeomanite is a new example of the growing family of lead oxychloride minerals that have a structure based upon oxocentred OPb4 tetrahedra, which, in this mineral, jointly with OHPb3 triangles, form [O(OH)Pb2]+ chains similar to those observed in synthetic Pb2O(OH)I. Yeomanite is structurally related to sidpietersite, penfieldite and laurionite.
