The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to significant strain on front-line healthcare workers.

In this multicentre study, we compared the psychological outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic in various countries in the Asia-Pacific region and identified factors associated with adverse psychological outcomes.

From 29 April to 4 June 2020, the study recruited healthcare workers from major healthcare institutions in five countries in the Asia-Pacific region. A self-administrated survey that collected information on prior medical conditions, presence of symptoms, and scores on the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales and the Impact of Events Scale-Revised were used. The prevalence of depression, anxiety, stress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) relating to COVID-19 was compared, and multivariable logistic regression identified independent factors associated with adverse psychological outcomes within each country.

A total of 1146 participants from India, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam were studied. Despite having the lowest volume of cases, Vietnam displayed the highest prevalence of PTSD. In contrast, Singapore reported the highest case volume, but had a lower prevalence of depression and anxiety. In the multivariable analysis, we found that non-medically trained personnel, the presence of physical symptoms and presence of prior medical conditions were independent predictors across the participating countries.

This study highlights that the varied prevalence of psychological adversity among healthcare workers is independent of the burden of COVID-19 cases within each country. Early psychological interventions may be beneficial for the vulnerable groups of healthcare workers with presence of physical symptoms, prior medical conditions and those who are not medically trained.

To identify demographic risk factors associated with high stress and examine the relationships between levels of stress, demographics and dietary fat, fruit and vegetable intakes in low-income pregnant women with overweight or obesity.

A cross-sectional study.

Participants were recruited from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children in Michigan, USA.

Participants (n 353) were non-Hispanic Black (black) or White (white).

Women aged 35 years or older (OR=4·09; 95% CI 1·45, 11·51) and who had high school or less education (OR=1·88; 95% CI 1·22, 2·89) or were unemployed (OR=1·89; 95% CI 1·15, 3·12) were significantly more likely to report high stress than women who were younger, had at least some college education or were employed/homemakers. However, race and smoking status were not associated with level of stress. Women with high stress reported significantly lower fruit and vegetable intakes but not fat intake than women with low stress. Women aged 35 years or older reported significantly higher vegetable but not fat or fruit intake than women who were 18–24 years old. Black women reported significantly higher fat but not fruit or vegetable intake than white women. Education, employment and smoking status were not significantly associated with dietary intake of fat, fruits and vegetables.

Nutrition counselling on reducing fat and increasing fruit and vegetable intakes may consider targeting women who are black or younger or who report high stress, respectively.

Little is known about the combined use of benzodiazepines and antidepressants in older psychiatric patients. This study examined the prescription pattern of concurrent benzodiazepines in older adults treated with antidepressants in Asia, and explored its demographic and clinical correlates.

The data of 955 older adults with any type of psychiatric disorders were extracted from the database of the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Patterns for Antidepressants (REAP-AD) project. Demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. Both univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed.

The proportion of benzodiazepine and antidepressant combination in this cohort was 44.3%. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that higher doses of antidepressants, younger age (<65 years), inpatients, public hospital, major comorbid medical conditions, antidepressant types, and country/territory were significantly associated with more frequent co-prescription of benzodiazepines and antidepressants.

Nearly, half of the older adults treated with antidepressants in Asia are prescribed concurrent benzodiazepines. Given the potentially adverse effects of benzodiazepines, the rationale of benzodiazepines and antidepressants co-prescription needs to be revisited.

The association between blood pressure (BP) and short-term clinical outcome of acute ischemic stroke is inconclusive. We investigated the association between BP in the first 72 hours following admission and death in-hospital and neurologic deficiency at discharge among patients with acute ischemic stroke.

A total of 2675 acute ischemic stroke patients confirmed by a computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance imaging were included in the present study. Blood pressure in the first 72 hours after admission and other study variables were collected for all ischemic stroke patients. Neurological functions National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) were evaluated by trained neurologists at discharge. The study outcome was defined as death in-hospital and neurologic deficiency (NIHSS≥10) at discharge.

Systolic and diastolic BP were significantly and positively associated with odds of study outcome in acute ischemic stroke. For example, compared to those with a systolic BP<140 mmHg, multiple-adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of study outcome was 3.29(1.22, 8.90) among participants with systolic BP of 180-219 mmHg, P<0.05; compared to those with a diastolic BP<90 mmHg, multiple-adjusted odds ratio of study outcome was 7.05(1.32, 37.57) among participants with diastolic BP ≥ 120 mmHg, P<0.05.

Systolic BP≥180 and diastolic BP≥120 were significantly and positively associated with death in-hospital or neurologic deficiency at discharge among patients with acute ischemic stroke.
