Laboratory and field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of several environmental factors on seed germination and seedling emergence of the invasive weed, apple of Peru. The anatomy of the seed was also investigated in this study. The anatomy of the seed is similar to that of an eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) seed. The seed is albuminous, and consists of a seed coat, endosperm, and an embryo. The seed coat, which consists of both outer and inner integuments, is relatively thick. Fresh and dry stored seeds exhibited strong dormancy. Hot water treatment did not affect the seed germination in the light, but significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the germination rate in the dark. Dry-heat treatment had no significant effect on seed germination in the dark, but it significantly (P < 0.05) increased the germination rate in the light. Cold stratification alone did not influence seed germination under constant temperature (25 C) but affected it under alternating temperature (25–15 C). However, a combination of warm and cold stratification produced significant (P < 0.05) germination in the dark as well as in the light. In addition, the effect of warm stratification followed by cold stratification was more pronounced in the dark than in the light. Gibberellin A3 (GA3) (10–3 and 10–4 M) treatments significantly (P < 0.05) increased the seed germination rate compared with that of the control. Emergence rate was maximum for seeds placed on the soil surfaces; no seedling emergence occurred when seeds were placed at a depth of 5 cm.

We investigated the fabrication of diamond-like carbon (DLC) emitter patterns by room-temperature curing nanoimprint lithography (RTC-NIL) with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds using polysiloxane, as an application to the emitter for the next generation flat panel display.

The DLC which has excellent properties similar to diamond properties was used as a pattern material. A PDMS was used as a mold material and fabricated by the following optimum conditions of the first curing time at RT for 36 h and the second curing time at the temperature of 150 °C for 15 mins. The polysiloxane is in the state of sticky liquid at RT and stable in air. Therefore, the polysiloxane was used the electron beam (EB) resist and oxide mask material in EB lithography, and also used as RT-imprint material.

First, we fabricated the PDMS mold with pit array. Each dot is 5 µm-diameter and 400 nm-depth. We carried out the RTC-NIL process with PDMS molds using polysiloxane under the following optimum imprint conditions of 0.5 MPa-imprinting pressure, 1.5 min-the time between spin-coat and imprint, and 5 min-imprinting time. Next, the residual layer of imprinted polysiloxane pattern was 450 nm and then was removed with electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) trifluoromethane (CHF3) ion shower under the conditions of 300 eV-ion energy and 3 min-etching time. Then, we processed the imprinted polysiloxane patterns on the DLC film with an ECR oxygen (O2) ion shower under the conditions of 400 eV-ion energy and 12 min-etching time. As a result, we succeeded in fabricating convex DLC emitter patterns with high accuracy which has 5 µm-diameter and 500 nm-height.

We investigated the fabrication of convex diamond-like carbon (DLC) based microgears in room-temperature curing nanoimprint lithography (RTC-NIL) using the ladder-type hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ), as an application for the medical micro electro mechanical system (MEMS). The HSQ which is an inorganic polymer of sol-gel system turns into a gel when exposed to air and has the siloxane bond. Therefore, the HSQ was used as RT-imprinting material, and also used as an oxide mask material in electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) oxygen (O2) ion shower etching. We fabricated the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold with concave microgear patterns which has 40, 50 and 60 μm-tip diameter and 300 nm-depth. We carried out the RTC-NIL process using the PDMS mold under the following optimum conditions of 0.10 MPa-imprinting pressure and 1.0 min-imprinting time. We found that the residual layer of imprinted HSQ microgear patterns was removed with ECR trifluoromethane (CHF3) ion shower under the following conditions of 300 eV-ion energy and 2.0 min-etching time, and then microgears of the HSQ on the DLC film were etched with ECR O2 ion shower under the following conditions of 400 eV-ion energy and 10 min-etching time. As a result, the convex DLC based microgears which have 40, 50 and 60 μm-tip diameter and 400 nm-height were fabricated with high accuracy in the new fabrication process of RTC-NIL.

In our first two experiments, we examined brain tissue pH and tensions of oxygen and carbon dioxide in dogs core cooled to 20°C. So as to evaluate the effects of 60 minutes of circulatory arrest, 120 minutes of low-flow perfusion (25 mI/kg/mm), and 120 minutes of moderate-flow perfusion (50 mi/kg/mm), all conducted with and without pulsatile assistance. We further determined the effects of blood gas strategy on the same variables with 60 minutes of circulatory arrest. In a third experiment, we directly observed microcirculation at the surface of the brain during profoundly hypothermic perfusion. In the fourth experiment, we measured cerebral blood flow, oxygen consumption, and excessive production of lactate. Profound anoxia occurred within 20 minutes of circulatory arrest, causing severe and progressive acidosis in the brain tissues along with hypercapnia. The inhalation of 5% or 7% carbon dioxide during core cooling made the brain unacceptably acidotic. The brain acidosis was mild with low flow perfusion, and slight with moderate-flow perfusion. Pulsatile assistance improved acidosis in the brain tissues at all rates of flow. It also improved the microcirculation, the patent number of arterioles and stabilized flow in bridging veins. Cerebral metabolism became aerobic without alterations in cerebral consumption of oxygen during low-flow perfusion. We recommend flow rates above 25% of normal, alpha-stat strategy, and pulsatile assistance for better protection of the brain during profound hypothermia.

We examined numerous ovarian follicles from 32–35 d virgin mice by transmission electron microscopy and light microscopic immunohistochemistry. No macrophages were seen, but various stages of apoptotic granulosa cells were encountered. Presumably a granulosa cell or its debris in an advanced stage of apoptosis was destined to be phagocytosed by adjacent normal-looking granulosa cells. Other granulosa cells of normal appearance were seen in the region of the zona pellucida in contact with and apparently phagocytosing atrophic oocytes. Such granulosa cells were characterised by the presence of gap junctions with other cells and frequently contained annular gap junctions in the cytoplasm. To confirm the lack of involvement of macrophages in the process of follicular atresia and elimination, specially prepared ovarian sections were incubated with antimouse macrophage monoclonal antibodies (F4/80, Mac-1, Mac-2). None of the follicles examined showed positive immunoreactivity with these antibodies. Atretic follicles may shrink and eventually disappear from the ovary as a result of repeated apoptosis and phagocytosis by granulosa cells. There is no evidence for the presence or involvement of macrophages in the atretic follicles, at least in prereproductive mice as examined.

An experimental and analytical study has been carried out to investigate the melting characteristics of ice blocks immersed in quiescent saline water. A horizontal ice cylinder and both downward- and upward-facing inclined ice plates were used as the testing blocks. The experiments were carried out in 3.5% (by weight) saline water at ambient temperatures ranging from 1.8° to 25.0°C for all kinds of ice blocks. Ice plates were tested at inclination angles from 0° to 75°. For downward-facing ice plates, melting rates were determined analytically using the profile method.

C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid P component (SAP), which are known to increase in sera from humans and many other animals with acute inflammation caused by infection, toxic drug administration or injury, were previously purified from bovine serum. These serum levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using specific antiserum to bovine CRP or SAP which was prepared by immunizing rabbits and goats with each purified protein. Among 68 healthy Holstein cows, 45 non-lactating cows had levels of CRP and SAP of 20·6±1·4 and 27·6 ± 1·3 μg/ml respectively; 23 lactating cows had higher levels of CRP and SAP (76·0±13·6 and 38·3±5·5 μg/ml respectively). In the latter group, there was a high correlation between milk yield and serum CRP levels (P <0·001). From these observations, it was assumed that lactation might stimulate CRP synthesis rather than SAP synthesis in bovine liver as an acute phase reaction, and that CRP might be called a lactation-associated protein.
