Uvite, CaMg3(Al5Mg)(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH), is a new mineral of the tourmaline supergroup. It occurs in the Facciatoia quarry, San Piero in Campo, Elba Island, Italy (42°45′04.55″N, 10°12′50.89″E) at the centre of a narrow (2–3 cm wide) vein composed of aggregates of dark brown to black tourmaline, penetrating (magnesite + dolomite)-rich hydrothermally altered metaserpentinite. Crystals are euhedral and up to 1 cm in size, brown with a vitreous lustre, conchoidal fracture and grey streak. Uvite has a Mohs hardness of ~7½, a calculated density of 3.115 g/cm3 and is uniaxial (–). Uvite has trigonal symmetry, space group R3m, a = 15.9519(10) Å, c = 7.2222(5) Å, V = 1597.3(1) Å3 and Z = 3. The crystal structure was refined to R1 = 1.77% using 1666 unique reflections collected with MoKα X-rays. Schizolite, originating from the type locality, Tutop Agtakôrfia, in the Ilímaussaq alkaline complex, Julianehåb district, South Greenland, was described initially by Winther (1901) with additional data being supplied by Bøggild (1903). Recently, a proposal for the new mineral ‘marshallsussmanite’ was submitted to, and approved by, the International Mineralogical Association Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (IMA2013-067) by Origlieri et al. (2013). Results from the detailed examination of two schizolite cotype samples presented here, using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, and optical properties, confirms it to be equivalent to ‘marshallsussmanite’. Historical precedence sets a priority for discrediting the name ‘marshallsussmanite’ in favour of the original, more-than-a century-old name, schizolite. The two schizolite samples investigated vary slightly in physical and chemical properties but are consistent overall. The prismatic crystals are pale red or pink to brownish. Schizolite is brittle with a splintery aspect. It is biaxial (+), with average optical parameters: α = 1.626 ± 0.003, β = 1.630 ± 0.002, γ = 1.661 ± 0.002, 2Vmeas = 71(4)° and 2Vcalc = 40°; there is no pleochroism. Electron microprobe analysis shows both samples have nearly identical compositions (differences <0.4 wt.% oxide), with the mean values of: SiO2 52.6(4); Al2O3 0.005(1); FeO 2.54(2); MnO 13.86(9); CaO 17.9(4); Na2O 8.9(1); and H2O 2.59(2) wt.% oxide; this corresponds to a mean formula of: Na1.00(2)Ca1.11(7)Mn0.68(1)Fe0.12(0)Si3.041(1)O8(OH). Final least-squares structure refinements for both samples converged at R1 values ≤2.0%; H atoms were located in all refinements.

Bobkingite, ideally is a new mineral from the New Cliffe Hill Quarry, Stantonunder-Bardon, Leicestershire, England. It occurs as very thin (⩽5 µm) transparent plates up to 0.2 mm across, perched on a compact fibrous crust of malachite and crystalline azurite attached to massive cuprite. Crystals are tabular on {001} with dominant {001} and minor {100} and {110}. Bobkingite is a soft pale blue colour with a pale-blue streak, vitreous lustre and no observable fluorescence under ultraviolet light. It has perfect {001} and fair {100} cleavages, no observable parting, conchoidal fracture, and is brittle. Its Mohs' hardness is 3 and the calculated density is 3.254 g/cm3. Bobkingite is biaxial negative with α = 1.724(2), β = 1.745(2), γ = 1.750(2), 2Vγmeas = 33(6)°, 2Vcalc = 52°, pleochroism distinct, X = very pale blue, Z = pale greenish blue, X^a = 22° (in β obtuse), Y = c, Z = b. Bobkingite is monoclinic, space group C2/m, unit-cell parameters (refined from powder data): a = 10.301(8), b = 6.758(3), c = 8.835(7)Å, β = 111.53(6)°, V = 572.1(7)Å3, Z = 2. The seven strongest lines in the X-ray powder-diffraction pattern are [d (Å), I, (hkl)]: 8.199, 100, (001); 5.502, 100, (110); 5.029, 40, (01); 2.883, 80, (310); 2.693, 40, (13); 2.263, 40, (113), (03); 2.188, 50, (23). Chemical analysis by electron microprobe and crystal-structure solution and refinement gave CuO 70.46, Cl 12.71, H2O 19.19, O≡Cl –2.87, sum 99.49 wt.%, where the amount of H2O was determined by crystal-structure analysis. The resulting empirical formula on the basis of 12 anions (including 8 (OH) and 2H2O) is Cu4.99Cl2.02O10H12. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to an R index of 2.6% for 638 observed reflections measured with X-rays on a single crystal. Three distinct (Cuϕ6) (ϕ = unspecified anion) octahedra share edges to form a framework that is related to the structures of paratacamite and the Cu2(OH)3Cl polymorphs, atacamite and clinoatacamite. The mineral is named for Robert King, formerly of the Department of Geology, Leicester University, prominent mineral collector and founding member of the Russell Society. The mineral and its name have been approved by the Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names of the International Mineralogical Association.

The introduction of a fifth amphibole group, the Na-Ca-Mg-Fe-Mn-Li group, defined by 0.50 < B(Mg,Fe2+,Mn2+,Li) < 1.50 and 0.50 ≤ B(Ca,Na) ≤ 1.50 a.f.p.u. (atoms per formula unit), with members whittakerite and ottoliniite, has been required by recent discoveries of B(LiNa) amphiboles. This, and other new discoveries, such as sodicpedrizite (which, here, is changed slightly, but significantly, from the original idealized formula), necessitate amendments to the IMA 1997 definitions of the Mg-Fe-Mn-Li, calcic, sodic-calcic and sodic groups. The discovery of obertiite and the finding of an incompatibility in the IMA 1997 subdivision of the sodic group, requires further amendments within the sodic group. All these changes, which have IMA approval, are summarized.

Wooldridgeite, ideally Na2(P2O7)2(H2O)10, orthorhombic, a = 11.938(1), b = 32.854(2), c = 11.017(1) Å , V = 4321.2(8) Å3, a:b:c = 0.3634:1:0.3353, space group Fdd2, Z = 8, is a new mineral from Judkins Quarry, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England. Associated minerals are calcite, chalcopyrite, bornite and baryte. It occurs as equant crystals forming rhombic dipyramids; no twinning was observed. It is transparent blue-green with a very pale-blue streak, a vitreous lustre, and does not fluoresce under long- or short-wave ultraviolet light. Wooldridgeite has a Mohs hardness of 2–3, is brittle with an irregular fracture, and has no cleavage. The calculated density is 2.279 g/cm3. In transmitted light, wooldridgeite is colourless, non-pleochroic, and shows no dispersion. It is biaxial negative with α = 1.508(1), β = 1.511(1), γ = 1.517(1), 2V(meas.) = 76.2(5), 2V(calc.) = 71(10)8, X = b, Y = c, Z = a. The strongest five reflections in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are [d(Å), (I), (hkl)]: 8.23(30)(040), 6.52(100)(131), 4.05(40)(260), 3.255(40)(262); 2.924(40)(371). Electron-microprobe analysis of wooldridgeite gave P2O5 39.37, CuO 20.24, MgO 0.24, CaO 7.73, Na2O 8.33, K2O 0.17, H2O(calc.) 24.72, sum 100.80 wt.%; the corresponding unit formula (based on 24 anions) is (Na1.96K0.03)Ca1.00(Cu1.85Mg0.04)P4.04O14(H2O)10 where the H2O groups were assigned from knowledge of the crystal structure; the infrared absorption spectrum also indicates the presence of H2O in the structure. The mineral is named for James Wooldridge (1923–1995), a fervent amateur mineral collector who discovered this mineral.

Veblenite, ideally K2☐2Na(Fe2+5Fe3+4Mn2+7☐)Nb3Ti(Si2O7)2(Si8O22)2O6(OH)10(H2O)3, is a new mineral with no natural or synthetic analogues. The mineral occurs at Ten Mile Lake, Seal Lake area, Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada), in a band of paragneiss consisting chiefly of albite and arfvedsonite. Veblenite occurs as red brown single laths and fibres included in feldspar. Associated minerals are niobophyllite, albite, arfvedsonite, aegirine-augite, barylite, eudidymite, neptunite, Mn-rich pectolite, pyrochlore, sphalerite and galena. Veblenite has perfect cleavage on {001} and splintery fracture. Its calculated density is 3.046 g cm–3. Veblenite is biaxial negative with α 1.676(2), β 1.688(2), γ 1.692(2) (λ 590 nm), 2Vmeas = 65(1)°, 2Vcalc = 59.6°, with no discernible dispersion. It is pleochroic in the following pattern: X = black, Y = black, Z = orange-brown. The mineral is red-brown with a vitreous, translucent lustre and very pale brown streak. It does not fluoresce under short and long-wave UV-light. Veblenite is triclicnic, space group P, a 5.3761(3), b 27.5062(11), c 18.6972(9) Å, α 140.301(3), β 93.033(3), γ 95.664(3)°, V = 1720.96(14) Å3. The strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [d(Å)(I)(hkl)] are: 16.894(100)(010), 18.204(23)(01), 4.271(9)(, 040, 120), 11.661(8)(001), 2.721(3)(), 4.404(3)(, ), 4.056(3)(031, 12; , ), 3.891(2)(003).

The chemical composition of veblenite from a combination of electron microprobe analysis and structural determination for H2O and the Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio is Nb2O5 11.69, TiO2 2.26, SiO2 35.71, Al2O3 0.60, Fe2O3 10.40, FeO 11.58, MnO 12.84, ZnO 0.36, MgO 0.08, BaO 1.31, SrO 0.09, CaO 1.49, Cs2O 0.30, K2O 1.78, Na2O 0.68, H2O 4.39, F 0.22, O = F –0.09, sum 95.69 wt.%. The empirical formula [based on 20 (Al+Si) p. f. u. is (K0.53Ba0.28Sr0.03☐0.16)Σ1(K0.72Cs0.07☐1.21)Σ2(Na0.72Ca0.17☐1.11)Σ2(Fe2+5.32Fe3+4.13Mn2+5.97Ca0.70Zn0.15Mg0.07☐0.66)Σ17(Nb2.90Ti0.93Fe3+0.17)Σ4(Si19.61Al0.39)Σ20O77.01H16.08F0.38. The simplified formula is (K, Ba, ☐)3(☐, Na)2(Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+)17(Nb,Ti)4(Si2O7)2(Si8O22)2O6(OH)10(H2O)3. The infrared spectrum of the mineral contains the following bands (cm–1): 453, 531, 550, 654 and 958, with shoulders at 1070, 1031 and 908. A broad absorption was observed between ~3610 and 3300 with a maximum at ~3525. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to an R1 index of 9.1%. In veblenite, the main structural unit is an HOH layer, which consists of the octahedral (O) and two heteropolyhedral (H) sheets. The H sheet is composed of Si2O7 groups, veblenite Si8O22 ribbons and Nb-dominant D octahedra. This is the first occurrence of an eight-membered Si8O22 ribbon in a mineral crystal structure. In the O sheet, (Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+) octahedra share common edges to form a modulated O sheet parallel to (001). HOH layers connect via common vertices of D octahedra and cations at the interstitial A(1,2) and B sites. In the intermediate space between two adjacent HOH layers, the A(1) site is occupied mainly by K; the A(2) site is partly occupied by K and H2O groups, the B site is partly occupied by Na. The crystal structure of veblenite is related to several HOH structures: jinshanjiangite, niobophyllite (astrophyllite group) and nafertisite. The mineral is named in honour of David R. Veblen in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fields of mineralogy and crystallography.

A REE-bearing fluorosilicate from the Tommot REE-Nb deposit in Yakutia, Russia, described without a name in 1966, is characterized here as a new species, proshchenkoite-(Y), of the vicanite group of borosilicates. Wavelength-dispersive electron probe analyses gave the following empirical formula: Y3.70REE7.54Ca1.55Na1.16Mn0.77Th0.10Pb0.01)Σ14.83(Fe2+0.83Mn0.15Ti0.02)Σ1.00Ca1.00(P0.70Si0.26As0.04)Σ1.00Si0.26B3.20(O34.55F13.45)Σ48. Boron was analysed with a nuclear microprobe method based on the nuclear reaction 11B(p,α)2α. The simplified formula is (Y,REE,Ca,Mn)15(Fe2+,Mn)Ca(P,Si)Si6B3O34F14. The mineral is trigonal, R3m, with a = 10.7527(7) Å, c = 27.4002(18) Å, V = 2743.6(6) Å 3, Z = 3. The crystal structure was refined to Rl = 0.042 for 1819 observed reflections. Proshchenkoite-(Y) is isostructural with okanoganite-(Y), vicanite-(Ce) and hundholmenite-(Y), and the differences in site occupancies are discussed. The strongest six reflections of the X-ray powder-diffraction pattern [dobs in Å, (I), (hkl)] are: 4.441, (36), (202); 3.144, (77), (214); 3.028, (45). (009); 2.968, (100), (027); 1.782, (32), (330); and 1.713, (32), (1.2.14). The mineral is optically uniaxial (—) with ω 1.734(2) and 8 1.728(2). The Mohs hardness is about 5; density measured on material subject to incipient metamictization is 4.72 g/cm3, as compared to Dcalc = 4.955 g/cm3.

The result of electron microprobe analyses of alleged okanoganite-(Y) from the type locality in Okanogan County, Washington, USA, is also presented. We find here also that P > Si at one of the sites, whereas the analytical data of Boiocchi et al. (2004) indicate Si > P. Consequently, the mineral we have analysed is the P analogue of okanoganite-(Y), another new species.

Hilgardite, Ca2B5O9Cl·H2O, has a zeolite-type framework structure consisting of cross-linked (010) layers of borate sheets having the fundamental building block (FBB) = 2Δ3☐:<Δ2☐>-<Δ2☐>. These layers are polar and the orientation, plus the number of layers in a sequence, determine the polytype. To date three hilgardite polytypes have been described: hilgardite-1A, -3A and -4M. A reliable means of polytype identification by micro X-ray powder diffraction (mXRPD) is outlined. Two polytypes are identified in the Sussex New Brunswick potash deposits: hilgardite-1A and -3A. Both cells are refined with XRPD data: hilgardite-1A, a 6.456(1), b 6.558(1), c 6.295(1) Å, α 61.62(1), β 118.76(1), γ 108.82(2)°, V 205.23(4) Å3 and hilgardite-3A, a 17.484(6), b 6.487(3), c 6.321(3) Å, α 60.78(3), β 79.58(3), γ 84.16(3)°, V 615.3(3) Å3. Hilgardite polytype assemblages are determined for 24 Millstream deposit core samples and 43 Penobsquis deposit core samples. The Millstream deposit occurs as an isolated, inner basin during evaporite formation. Borate formation from this marine environment was during the last stages of evaporation. Simple Mg-Ca borates precipitated from this highly saline brine. It underwent subsequent minor folding and all hilgardite samples are the hilgardite-1A polytype. The Penobsquis deposit occurs as an open fore-basin. This larger, less saline basin also precipitated borate minerals during the final stages of evaporation. The borate assemblage here is much more complex with borate minerals that have essential Ca, K, Fe, Mg and Sr. This deposit was subjected to major folding and recrystallization. Both hilgardite-1A and -3A occur here. Polytype-3A is concentrated in areas of maximum folding and it is proposed that pressure is the main control of hilgardite polytypes. Strontium substitution has no effect on polytype formation.

The International Mineralogical Association's approved amphibole nomenclature has been revised in order to simplify it, make it more consistent with divisions generally at 50%, define prefixes and modifiers more precisely and include new amphibole species discovered and named since 1978, when the previous scheme was approved. The same reference axes form the basis of the new scheme and most names are little changed but compound species names like tremolitic hornblende (now magnesiohornblende) are abolished and also crossite (now glaucophane or ferroglaucophane or magnesioriebeckite or riebeckite), tirodite (now manganocummingtonite) and dannemorite (now manganogrunerite). The 50% rule has been broken only to retain tremolite and actinolite as in the 1978 scheme so the sodic calcic amphibole range has therefore been expanded. Alkali amphiboles are now sodic amphiboles. The use of hyphens is defined. New amphibole names approved since 1978 include nyböite, leakeite, kornite, ungarettiite, sadanagaite and cannilloite. All abandoned names are listed. The formulae and source of the amphibole end member names are listed and procedures outlined to calculate Fe3+ and Fe2+ when not determined by analysis.

Arisite-(La), ideally NaLa2(CO3)2[F2x(CO3)1–x]F, is a new layered REE-fluorcarbonate mineral from miarolitic cavities within the Aris phonolite, Namibia (IMA no. 2009-019). It occurs as distinct chemical zones mixed with its Ce-analogue, arisite-(Ce). Crystals are vitreous, transparent beige, beige-yellow, light lemon-yellow to pinkish, and occur as tabular prisms up to 1.5 mm. Arisite-(La) is brittle, has conchoidal fracture, poor cleavage perpendicular to (001), a Mohs hardness of ~3–3½, is not fluorescent in either long- or shortwave UV radiation, dissolves slowly in dilute HCl at room temperature and sinks in methylene iodide, Dcalc. = 4.072 g cm–3. Arisite-(La) is uniaxial negative, has sharp extinction, with both ω and ε exhibiting a range of values within each grain: ω = 1.696–1.717(4) and ε = 1.594–1.611(3), a result of chemical zoning attributed to both Ce ⇌ La and Na ⇌ Ca substitutions. The crystal structure of both arisite-(Ce) and arisite-(La) were solved by direct methods and refined to R = 1.66%, wR2 = 4.31% (Ce) and R = 2.09%, wR2 = 5.26% (La), respectively. Arisite is hexagonal, Pm2, Z = 1, with unit-cell parameters of a = 5.1109(2) Å, c = 8.6713(4) Å, V = 196.16(6) Å3 for arisite-(Ce), and a = 5.1131(7) Å, c = 8.6759(17) Å, V = 196.43(5) Å3 for arisite-(La). Arisite-(Ce) and arisite-(La) are members of the layered, flat-lying REE-fluorcarbonate group which have crystal structures characterized by separate layers of triangular planar groups that parallel the overall layering of the structure, F, REE and alkali or alkaline-earthelements. Overall, the arisite structure can be defined by three distinct layers which parallel (001): (1) ∞[REE(CO3)2F] slabs, (2) sheets of Naϕ9 polyhedra, and (3) ∞[2F/CO3]2–. Based on its (M+F)/C ratio, arisite can further be described as having a dense, flat-lying fluorcarbonate structure, a classification which includes the structurally related mineral species cordylite, kukharenkoite, cebaite, lukechangite, huanghoite, and one incompletely characterized synthetic phase, NaY2(CO3)3F.

Ferrivauxite, ideally Fe3+ Al2(PO4)2(OH)3·5H2O, is an oxidized equivalent of vauxite, Fe2+ Al2(PO4)2(OH)2·6H2O, and forms oxidation pseudomorphs after that mineral. It occurs in association with sigloite and crandallite at the Llallagua tin deposit, Bolivia. It is triclinic, space group P1̄, with a = 9.198(2), b = 11.607(3), c = 6.112(2) Å, α = 98.237(9), β = 91.900(13), γ = 108.658(9)°, V = 609.7(5) Å3, Z = 2. Strongest reflections of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [dobs in Å(Iobs)(hkl)]: 10.834(100)(010), 8.682(24)(100), 8.242 (65)(110), 6.018(28)(001), 5.918(23)(1̄10), 5.491 (30)(1̄20), 4.338(26)(200), 2.898 (32)(300). The structure was refined to R1 = 0.0369 for 3244 observed reflections. Twinning occurs on {010}. Ferrivauxite is isotypic with vauxite but with positional disorder of the Fe1 site and some of the oxygen sites. Disorder is also indicated by the infrared spectrum. One of the water molecules in vauxite is deprotonated in conjunction with the oxidation process and becomes a hydroxyl group. Ferrivauxite is translucent to transparent, has a golden brown colour with a pale yellow-brown streak and vitreous lustre. It is brittle with an irregular fracture and shows no cleavage. The Mohs hardness is estimated to be ∼3½ by comparison with vauxite. D(calc.) is 2.39 g cm–3 for the empirical formula Fe3+0.94Mn0.01Al1.98P2.05O8(OH)3 · 5H2O, obtained by electron-microprobe analysis in wavelength dispersive spectroscopy mode. The mineral is optically biaxial negative with α = 1.589(1), β = 1.593(1), γ = 1.596(1); the refractive indices are higher than those of vauxite.

Hanawaltite, ideally Hg1+6Hg2+O3Cl2, is orthorhombic, Pbma (57), with unit-cell parameters refined from powder data: a=11.790(3), b=13.881(4), c=6.450(2) Å, V=1055.7(6) Å3, a:b:c =0.8494:1:0.4647, Z=4. The strongest six lines of the X-ray powder-diffraction pattern [d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 5.25 (80)(111), 3.164 (60)(231), 3.053 (100)(041), 2.954 (70)(141), 2.681 (50)(401), and 2.411 (50)(232,341). The mineral is an extremely rare constituent in a small prospect pit near the long-abandoned Clear Creek mercury mine, New Idria district, San Benito County, California. It was found on a single-fracture surface where it is intimately associated with calomel, native mercury, cinnabar, montroydite, and quartz. Individual crystals are subhedral to anhedral, platy to somewhat bladed, and average about 50 μm in longest dimension. The largest known crystal is approximately 0.3×0.3 mm in size and is striated parallel [001]. Hanawaltite is opaque to translucent (on very thin edges), black to very dark brown–black in color, with a black to dark red–brown streak. Other physical properties include: metallic luster; cleavage {001} good; uneven fracture; brittle; nonfluorescent; H<5; calculated density (for the empirical formula) 9.51 g/cm3.

In polished section, hanawaltite is moderately to strongly bireflectant and is pleochroic white (RI) to blue–white (R2). In reflected plane-polarized light, it is white with orange–red internal reflections in very thin grains and at grain margins. The anisotropy is strong with bright metallic blue rotation tints. Measured reflectance values, in air and in oil, are tabulated. Electron-microprobe analysis yielded Hg2O 82.46, HgO 14.27, Cl 3.33, H2O [0.34], sum [100.40], less O=Cl 0.75, total [99.65] wt. %, corresponding to Hg1+6.00Hg2+1.00 [Cl1.43(OH)0.57]Σ2.00O3.00, based on O+Cl=5. After the crystal structure was determined, the original microprobe value for Hg2O, 96.2, was partitioned in a ratio of 6Hg2O:HgO and (OH) was calculated, such that Cl+(OH)=2. The hanawaltite structure consists of undulatory [Hg–Hg]2+ ribbons which roughly parallel (100). The diatomic [Hg–Hg]2+ groups have anion tails which, in turn, serve as cross linkages between dimer ribbons through [Hg2+O2Cl2] planar rhombs. The structure is compared to that of other mercury oxychlorides and each is found to have its own unique structural features. This structural diversity is attributed to the inherent ability of mercury to adopt either metallic or ionic types of bonds. The mineral name honors the late Dr. J. D. (Don) Hanawalt (1903–1987), who was a pioneer in the field of X-ray powder diffraction.

Bright apple green millimeter-sized crystals of tavorite from the Tip Top pegmatite, near Custer, South Dakota are triclinic, space group , with refined unit-cell parameters a = 5.340(2), b = 7.283(2), c = 5.110(2)Å, α = 109.29(2)°, β = 97.86(3)°, γ = 106.32(3)°, V = 174.1(3)Å3, a:b:c = 0.7332:1:0.7016, Z = 2, D(m) (suspension in methylene iodide) = 3.32(1) and D(x) = 3.33 g/cm3 (for the theoretical formula). A fully indexed X-ray powder pattern is presented. Semiquantitative electron microprobe and secondary ion mass spectroscopic analyses indicate a formula near end-member LiFe + 3(PO4)(OH). The Tip Top tavorite is biaxial positive, α = 1.795(5), β = 1.81(1), γ = 1.86(1), 2V(meas.) = 50(2)°, 2V(calc.) = 59°, XΛa ≃ 15°, YΛb ≃ 0°, and ZΛc ≃ 38°. There is no evidence for optical absorption, pleochroism or dispersion.

Enclosures of various sizes and configurations have been employed to maintain natural planktonic communities and to examine their responses to pollutants (e.g. Menzel & Steele, 1978; Steele, 1979). Studies on feeding, growth, and mortality of larval fishes, at times conducted in conjunction with pollution experiments, have also been successfully conducted in large enclosures (Koeller & Parsons, 1977). Implicit in these and other comparable studies has been the expectation (or hope) that a balance could be achieved between the advantages and difficulties inherent in more traditional field and laboratory studies. Field studies offer the realism of working with the natural assemblage with its many interacting components and links, but also suffer the disadvantage associated with a turbulent and advective system, which generally makes the repetitive sampling of the same populations impossible. Laboratory studies reverse the balance; control and definition of the components are gained at the expense of realism. The use of large containers represents a hybrid approach characterized by a partial control over a moderately realistic ecosystem. In the ideal case, the use of large containers allows sufficient control to permit experimental manipulation of (and the testing of hypotheses concerning) planktonic assemblages which are sufficiently realistic to permit extension of the experimental results to the ‘real world’.
