The long-distance stable transport of relativistic electron beams (REBs) in plasmas is studied by full three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Theoretical analysis shows that the beam transport is mainly influenced by three transverse instabilities, where the excitation of self-modulation instability, and the suppression of the filamentation instability and the hosing instability are important to realize the beam stable transport. By modulating the transport parameters such as the electron density ratio, the relativistic Lorentz factor, the beam envelopes and the density profiles, the relativistic bunches having a smooth density profile and a length of several plasma wave periods can suppress the beam-plasma instabilities and propagate in plasmas for long distances with small energy losses. The results provide a reference for the research of long-distance and stable transport of REBs, and would be helpful for new particle beam diagnosis technology and space active experiments.

The golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) is an endangered species endemic to China. Relatively little is known about the taxonomic status of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) in these monkeys. Trichuris spp. (syn. Trichocephalus) are among the most important STHs, causing significant socio-economic losses and public health concerns. To date, five Trichuris species have been reported in golden monkeys, including a novel species, T. rhinopiptheroxella, based on morphology. In the present study, molecular and morphological analysis was conducted on adult Trichuris worms obtained from a dead golden snub-nosed monkey, to better understand their taxonomic status. Morphology indicated that the adult Trichuris worms were similar to T. rhinopiptheroxella. To further ascertain their phylogenetic position, the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of these worms was sequenced and characterized. The mt genome of T. rhinopiptheroxella is 14,186 bp, encoding 37 genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated amino acids of 12 protein-coding genes (with the exception of atp8) indicated that T. rhinopiptheroxella was genetically distinct and exhibited 27.5–27.8% genetic distance between T. rhinopiptheroxella and other Trichuris spp. Our results support T. rhinopiptheroxella as a valid Trichuris species and suggest that mt DNA could serve as a marker for future studies on the classification, evolution and molecular epidemiology of Trichuris spp. from golden snub-nosed monkeys.

For aircraft that employ distributed propeller propulsion systems, the distributed propeller slipstream increases the analysis complexity. The objective of this paper is to rapidly analyse the influence of propeller slipstream on a wing using a fast prediction approach to perform conceptual design studies. This fast approach is implemented through a panel/viscous vortex particle hybrid method taking into account the air viscosity effect. The parametric studies of propeller streamwise, spanwise, vertical installed position, propeller number and rotational direction are conducted for a rectangular wing platform in two different propeller-wing configurations. The results indicate that the propeller slipstream causes both the augmentations of the wing lift and drag in a traditional tractor propeller layout. For an over-the-wing propeller configuration, however, the obvious lift increase and drag decrease can be obtained. A rear propeller position relative to the wing chord leads to a beneficial increase in lift while a fore propeller location is able to decrease the wing drag. The maximum increment of the lift-to-drag ratio can be achieved by 17.6% when the propeller is located at 30% of the wing chord, which shows a considerable advantage in improving the wing aerodynamic efficiency.

Pseudanoplocephala crawfordi is an important zoonotic cestode of economic significance and public health concern. In spite of its significance as a pathogen, the systematics, genetics, epidemiology and biology of this parasite remain poorly understood. In the present study, we sequenced and characterized the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of P. crawfordi, which is 14,192 bp long and encodes 36 genes, including 12 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes and two ribosomal RNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis of the concatenated amino acid sequences using the Bayesian inference (BI) method showed that P. crawfordi was closely related to the family Hymenolepididae. Considering that the taxonomic status of P. crawfordi has been controversial when based only on morphological features, the mt genome obtained here will provide novel molecular markers to ascertain the phylogenetic position of this parasite accurately.

A new scheme for cone-hollow-assisted fast ignition in inertial fusion is investigated. A hollow is attached to the tip of a conventional gold cone. The transport and heating of the high-current electrons propagating from the cone tip to the compressed fuel core along the hollow is investigated by two-dimensional hybrid simulation. Different hollow geometry sizes are examinized. It is shown that with proper hollow guiding, hot electrons can be collimated between the inner-walls of the hollow by the large interface magnetic fields appearing on the inner surface. When the beam electrons further propagate into the dense region, they are scattered into the gold hollow through collisions with the fuel electrons and ions. The resulting magnetic potential around the hollow then bends beam electrons along the gold hollow to reach the dense core.

The isothermal oxidation behavior of bulk Ti3SiC2 at intermediate temperatures from 500 to 900 °C in flowing dry air was investigated. An anomalous oxidation with higher kinetics at lower temperatures was observed. This phenomenon resulted from the formation of microcracks in the oxide scales at low temperatures. The generation of these microcracks was caused by a phase change in the oxide products, i.e., the transformation of anatase TiO2 to rutile TiO2. This phase transformation resulted in tensile stress, which provided the driving force for the formation of the microcracks during oxidation. Despite the existence of microcracks, the intermediate-temperature oxidation of Ti3SiC2 generally obeyed the parabolic rate law and did not exhibit catastrophic destruction due to the fact that cracks occurring in the oxide layers were partially filled with amorphous SiO2. Therefore, further high oxidation kinetics was prevented.

Erbium and silicon were dual implanted into thermally grown SiO2 film on Si (110) substrates, followed by thermal treatment at 700–1200 °C for 30 min. The microstructure was studied by transmission electron microscope and x-ray diffraction. When the implanted films were annealed at T > 900 °C, the silicon nanocrystals (nc-Si) enwrapped by amorphous silicon (a-Si) could be observed. The thermal quenching behavior at λ = 1.535 μm and its relation with the annealling temperature were also investigated. With increasing annealing temperature, the portion of a-Si and the thermal quenching both decreased. Efficient luminescence from Er ions and weak intensity thermal quenching were obtained from the sample annealed at 1100 °C. The role of a-Si in non-radiative processes at T > 100 K is discussed.

The germanosilicidation of Ni on strained (001) Si0.8Ge0.2, particularly Ge segregation, grain boundary grooving, and surface morphology, during rapid thermal annealing (RTA) was studied. High-resolution cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (HRXTEM) suggested that Ge-rich Si1−zGez segregation takes place preferentially at the germanosilicide/Si1−xGex interface, more specifically at the triple junctions between two adjacent NiSi1−uGeu grains and the underlying epi Si1−xGex, and it is accompanied with thermal grooving process. The segregation process accelerates the thermal grooving of NiSi1−uGeu grain boundaries at the interface. The segregation-accelerated grain boundary grooving has significant effect on the surface morphology of NiSi1−uGeu films in Ni-SiGe system.
