Platelet 5-HT levels were determined by fluorescent orthophthaldehyde assay in 33 panic disorder patients with and without obsessive compulsive symptoms (PD + OCS: n = 16; PD-OCS: n = 17) according to DSM III-R criteria, and compared With those of 38 healthy controls. Mean platelet levels were significantly lower in PD + OCS than in PD-OCS patients. The results are discussed in relation to serotonergic dysfunction linked to PD and OCS comorbidity.

The aim of this study was to assess the seroprevalence of the Toxoplasma gondii parasite in pork produced in France, and to determine infection risk factors. An innovative survey was designed based on annual numbers of slaughtered pigs from intensive and outdoor farms in France. A total of 1549 samples of cardiac fluids were collected from pig hearts to determine seroprevalence using a Modified Agglutination Test. Of those, 160 hearts were bio-assayed in mice to isolate live parasites. The overall seroprevalence among fattening pigs was 2·9%. The adjusted seroprevalence in pigs from intensive farms was 3·0%; the highest in sows (13·4%); 2·9% in fattening pigs and 2·6% in piglets. Adjusted seroprevalence in fattening animals from outdoor farms was 6·3%. Strains were isolated from 41 animals and all were genotyped by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism as type II. Risk-factor analysis showed that the risk of infection was more than three times higher for outdoor pigs, and that sows’ risk was almost five times higher than that of fattening animals. This study provides further evidence of extensive pork infection with T. gondii regardless of breeding systems, indicating that farm conditions are still insufficient to guarantee ‘Toxoplasma-free pork’.

The MIRAGE sample (Merging & isolated high-redshift AMR galaxies; Perret 2014, PhD dissertation; Perret et al. 2014, AA 562, 1) has been built in order to understand the contribution of the merger processes to the mass assembly in the MASSIV (Mass Assembly Survey with SINFONI in VVDS, Contini et al. 2012, AA 539, 91) sample. It consists of a sample of idealized simulations based on the RAMSES code; the initial conditions were designed to reproduce the physical properties of the most gas-rich young galaxies. The sample is composed of 20 simulations of mergers exploring the initial parameters of mass and orientation of the disks with a spatial resolution reaching 7 parsecs.

MASSIV (Mass Assembly Survey with SINFONI in VVDS) is an ESO large program which consists of 84 star-forming galaxies, spanning a wide range of stellar masses, observed with the IFU SINFONI on the VLT, in the redshift range 1 ≤ z ≤ 2. To be representative of the normal galaxy population, the sample has been selected from a well-defined, complete and representative parent sample. The kinematics of individual galaxies reveals that 58% of the galaxies are slow rotators, which means that a high fraction of these galaxies should probably be formed through major merger processes which might have produced gaseous thick or spheroidal structures supported by velocity dispersion rather than by rotation. Computations on the major merger rate from close pairs indicate that a typical star-forming galaxy underwent ~0.4 major mergers in the last ~9.5 Gyr, showing that merging is a major process driving mass assembly into the red sequence galaxies. These objects are also intriguing due to the fact that more than one galaxy over four is more metal-rich in its outskirts than in its center.

We present the adaptive optics assisted, near-infrared VLTI instrument GRAVITY for precision narrow-angle astrometry and interferometric phase referenced imaging of faint objects. With its two fibers per telescope beam, its internal wavefront sensors and fringe tracker, and a novel metrology concept, GRAVITY will not only push the sensitivity far beyond what is offered today, but will also advance the astrometric accuracy for UTs to 10 μas. GRAVITY is designed to work with four telescopes, thus providing phase referenced imaging and astrometry for 6 baselines simultaneously. Its unique capabilities and sensitivity will open a new window for the observation of a wide range of objects, and — amongst others — will allow the study of motion within a few times the event horizon size of the Galactic Center black hole.

The 3rd octave chatter in cold rolling mills is a major issue for the industrial production of thin sheets with very tight tolerances, like packaging steels for instance. In this context, an experimental and theoretical approach, completed in partnership by Arcelor and VAI, afforded a precise analysis and innovative results, in the following fields : global on-line tandem mill instrumentation and efficient signal treatments implementation ; clear differentiation between brummer (non divergent mode) and chatter (divergent mode) ; modelling of interactions between chatter and technology (analytical and F.E. approaches) ; advanced chatter monitoring and industrial implementation.

A specific experimental Laser Scattering Tomography (LST) acquisition procedure is presented. It is adapted to the characterization of materials containing scattering defects ranging from 1 to 102/mm3. The technique makes it possible to obtain good resolution within a volume chosen to contain a statistically significant defect density. This method is used to show that the gas levitation technique makes it possible to significantly decrease scattering defects in glasses. In parallel, individual study of defects in such glasses is also presented.

The aim of this paper is to provide a better understanding of photoluminescent porous silicon (PS) microstructure in relation to their electronic properties: absorption band edge shift1 and quantum confinement hypothesis1,2, dielectric constant evolution and electroluminescence characteristics.

Results concerning the p type PS microstructure characterization by X ray diffraction and electron microscopy are presented showing a noticeable decrease in crystallite size and surface area with decreasing substrate doping and increasing porosity.

The optical transmission of homogeneous free-standing PS layers of different porosities and substrate dopings is studied, showing no evidence of a direct energy gap in PS. On the contrary, a large blue shift of the optical absorption edge, taking into account the total Si mass content in the PS film, is demonstrated. This shift is well correlated with the crystallite size variations with porosity and substrate doping and is attributed to a quantum confinement of electronic wavefunctions in the nanocrystallites.

On the other hand, ellipsometry measurements show the PS absorption to be little affected by the microcrystalline structure of the material in the 3.5–5 eV range, i.e. above the direct band gap of bulk Si. This indicates that, if confirmed, the quantum confinement strongly affects the PS joint density of states in the vicinity of the Si band edge and, as could be expected, to a much lesser degree near the edge of the confining potential.

Capacitance voltage measurements of thin PS layers allow the determination of the dielectric constant which is shown to decrease with increasing porosity. This behavior is in reasonable agreement with theε values deduced from the transmission experiments in the near infrared. Furthermore, it is shown that this dependence on porosity is well accounted for by the Bruggeman effective medium approximation.

Finally, recent results concerning visible light emission from solidstate porous silicon devices will be presented: I-V characteristics, electroluminescence intensity and dynamic, quantum efficiency and device ageing.
