Carlsen [‘$\ast $-isomorphism of Leavitt path algebras over $\Bbb Z$’, Adv. Math. 324 (2018), 326–335] showed that any $\ast $-homomorphism between Leavitt path algebras over $\mathbb Z$ is automatically diagonal preserving and hence induces an isomorphism of boundary path groupoids. His result works over conjugation-closed subrings of $\mathbb C$ enjoying certain properties. In this paper, we characterise the rings considered by Carlsen as precisely those rings for which every $\ast $-homomorphism of algebras of Hausdorff ample groupoids is automatically diagonal preserving. Moreover, the more general groupoid result has a simpler proof.

The complex algebra of an inverse semigroup with finitely many idempotents in each $\mathcal D$-class is stably finite by a result of Munn. This can be proved fairly easily using $C^{*}$-algebras for inverse semigroups satisfying this condition that have a Hausdorff universal groupoid, or more generally for direct limits of inverse semigroups satisfying this condition and having Hausdorff universal groupoids. It is not difficult to see that a finitely presented inverse semigroup with a non-Hausdorff universal groupoid cannot be a direct limit of inverse semigroups with Hausdorff universal groupoids. We construct here countably many nonisomorphic finitely presented inverse semigroups with finitely many idempotents in each $\mathcal D$-class and non-Hausdorff universal groupoids. At this time, there is not a clear $C^{*}$-algebraic technique to prove these inverse semigroups have stably finite complex algebras.

Twisted étale groupoid algebras have recently been studied in the algebraic setting by several authors in connection with an abstract theory of Cartan pairs of rings. In this paper we show that extensions of ample groupoids correspond in a precise manner to extensions of Boolean inverse semigroups. In particular, discrete twists over ample groupoids correspond to certain abelian extensions of Boolean inverse semigroups, and we show that they are classified by Lausch’s second cohomology group of an inverse semigroup. The cohomology group structure corresponds to the Baer sum operation on twists.

We also define a novel notion of inverse semigroup crossed product, generalizing skew inverse semigroup rings, and prove that twisted Steinberg algebras of Hausdorff ample groupoids are instances of inverse semigroup crossed products. The cocycle defining the crossed product is the same cocycle that classifies the twist in Lausch cohomology.

Among 353 healthcare personnel in a longitudinal cohort in 4 hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia (May–June 2020), 23 (6.5%) had severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibodies. Spending >50% of a typical shift at the bedside (OR, 3.4; 95% CI, 1.2–10.5) and black race (OR, 8.4; 95% CI, 2.7–27.4) were associated with SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity.

Given an action ${\varphi }$ of inverse semigroup S on a ring A (with domain of ${\varphi }(s)$ denoted by $D_{s^*}$ ), we show that if the ideals $D_e$ , with e an idempotent, are unital, then the skew inverse semigroup ring $A\rtimes S$ can be realized as the convolution algebra of an ample groupoid with coefficients in a sheaf of (unital) rings. Conversely, we show that the convolution algebra of an ample groupoid with coefficients in a sheaf of rings is isomorphic to a skew inverse semigroup ring of this sort. We recover known results in the literature for Steinberg algebras over a field as special cases.

Kaplansky introduced the notions of CCR and GCR $C^{\ast }$-algebras, because they have a tractable representation theory. Many years later, he introduced the notions of CCR and GCR rings. In this paper we characterize when the algebra of an ample groupoid over a field is CCR and GCR. The results turn out to be exact analogues of the corresponding characterization of locally compact groupoids with CCR and GCR $C^{\ast }$-algebras. As a consequence, we classify the CCR and GCR Leavitt path algebras.

We say that two elements of a group or semigroup are $\Bbbk$-linear conjugates if their images under any linear representation over $\Bbbk$ are conjugate matrices. In this paper we characterize $\Bbbk$-linear conjugacy for finite semigroups (and, in particular, for finite groups) over an arbitrary field $\Bbbk$.

This paper provides short proofs of two fundamental theorems of finite semigroup theory whose previous proofs were significantly longer, namely the two-sided Krohn-Rhodes decomposition theorem and Henckell’s aperiodic pointlike theorem. We use a new algebraic technique that we call the merge decomposition. A prototypical application of this technique decomposes a semigroup $T$ into a two-sided semidirect product whose components are built from two subsemigroups $T_{1}$, $T_{2}$, which together generate $T$, and the subsemigroup generated by their setwise product $T_{1}T_{2}$. In this sense we decompose $T$ by merging the subsemigroups $T_{1}$ and $T_{2}$. More generally, our technique merges semigroup homomorphisms from free semigroups.

OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: An accurate method to identify bleeding in large populations does not exist. Our goal was to explore bleeding representation in clinical text in order to develop a natural language processing (NLP) approach to automatically identify bleeding events from clinical notes. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: We used publicly available notes for ICU patients at high risk of bleeding (n=98,586 notes). Two physicians reviewed randomly selected notes and annotated all direct references to bleeding as “bleeding present” (BP) or “bleeding absent” (BA). Annotations were made at the mention level (if 1 specific sentence/phrase indicated BP or BA) and note level (if overall note indicated BP or BA). A third physician adjudicated discordant annotations. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: In 120 randomly selected notes, bleeding was mentioned 406 times with 76 distinct words. Inter-annotator agreement was 89% by the last batch of 30 notes. In total, 10 terms accounted for 65% of all bleeding mentions. We aggregated these results into 16 common stems (eg, “hemorr” for hemorrhagic and hemorrhage), which accounted for 90% of all 406 mentions. Of all 120 notes, 60% were classified as BP. The median number of stems was 5 (IQR 2, 9) in BP Versus 0 (IQR 0, 1) in BA notes. Zero bleeding mentions in a note was associated with BA (OR 28, 95% CI 6.5, 127). With 40 true negatives and 2 false negatives, the negative predictive value (NPV) of zero bleeding mentions was 95%. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: Few bleeding-related terms are used in clinical practice. Absence of these terms has a high NPV for the absence of bleeding. These results suggest that a high throughput, rules-based NLP tool to identify bleeding is feasible.

The author has previously associated to each commutative ring with unit $R$ and étale groupoid $\mathscr{G}$ with locally compact, Hausdorff and totally disconnected unit space an $R$-algebra $R\,\mathscr{G}$. In this paper we characterize when $R\,\mathscr{G}$ is Noetherian and when it is Artinian. As corollaries, we extend the characterization of Abrams, Aranda Pino and Siles Molina of finite-dimensional and of Noetherian Leavitt path algebras over a field to arbitrary commutative coefficient rings and we recover the characterization of Okniński of Noetherian inverse semigroup algebras and of Zelmanov of Artinian inverse semigroup algebras.

We prove that the Karoubi envelope of a shift—defined as the Karoubi envelope of the syntactic semigroup of the language of blocks of the shift—is, up to natural equivalence of categories, an invariant of flow equivalence. More precisely, we show that the action of the Karoubi envelope on the Krieger cover of the shift is a flow invariant. An analogous result concerning the Fischer cover of a synchronizing shift is also obtained. From these main results, several flow equivalence invariants—some new and some old—are obtained. We also show that the Karoubi envelope is, in a natural sense, the best possible syntactic invariant of flow equivalence of sofic shifts. Another application concerns the classification of Markov–Dyck and Markov–Motzkin shifts: it is shown that, under mild conditions, two graphs define flow equivalent shifts if and only if they are isomorphic. Shifts with property ($\mathscr{A}$) and their associated semigroups, introduced by Wolfgang Krieger, are interpreted in terms of the Karoubi envelope, yielding a proof of the flow invariance of the associated semigroups in the cases usually considered (a result recently announced by Krieger), and also a proof that property ($\mathscr{A}$) is decidable for sofic shifts.

The author has previously associated to each commutative ring with unit $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}\Bbbk $ and étale groupoid $\mathscr{G}$ with locally compact, Hausdorff, totally disconnected unit space a $\Bbbk $-algebra $\Bbbk \, \mathscr{G}$. The algebra $\Bbbk \, \mathscr{G}$ need not be unital, but it always has local units. The class of groupoid algebras includes group algebras, inverse semigroup algebras and Leavitt path algebras. In this paper we show that the category of unitary$\Bbbk \, \mathscr{G}$-modules is equivalent to the category of sheaves of $\Bbbk $-modules over $\mathscr{G}$. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof of a recent result that Morita equivalent groupoids have Morita equivalent algebras.

Effective conservation of rare plant species requires a detailed understanding of their unique distributions and habitat requirements to identify conservation targets. Research suggests that local conservation efforts may be one of the best means for accomplishing this task. We conducted a geographical analysis of the local distributions of rare plants in Napa County, California, to identify spatial relationships with individual habitat types. We measured the potential contribution of individual habitats to rare plant conservation by integrating analyses on overall diversity, species per area, specificity-weighted richness, presence of hotspots, and the composition of the rare plant community in each habitat type. This combination of analyses allowed us to determine which habitats are most significant for rare plant conservation at a local scale. Our analyses indicated that several habitat types were consistently associated with rare plant species. In broad terms, grasslands, oak forests, coniferous forests, wetlands, serpentines, chaparral, and rock outcrops were most consistently highlighted. No single habitat stood out in every analysis however, and therefore we conclude that careful selection of an assemblage of habitats that best represents diverse, restricted and unique rare plant communities will be the most efficient approach to protecting rare plant habitat at local scales. Accordingly we present a means of identifying conservation targets and protecting global biodiversity through local efforts.

We compute the quiver of any finite monoid that has a basic algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. More generally, we reduce the computation of the quiver over a splitting field of a class of monoids that we term rectangular monoids (in the semigroup theory literature the class is known as DO) to representation-theoretic computations for group algebras of maximal subgroups. Hence in good characteristic for the maximal subgroups, this gives an essentially complete computation. Since groups are examples of rectangular monoids, we cannot hope to do better than this. For the subclass of ℛ-trivial monoids, we also provide a semigroup-theoretic description of the projective indecomposable modules and compute the Cartan matrix.

We use the kernel category to give a finiteness condition for semigroups. As a consequence we provide yet another proof that finitely generated periodic semigroups of matrices are finite.

Adapting the theory of the derived category to ordered groupoids, we prove that every ordered functor (and thus every inverse and regular semigroup homomorphism) factors as an enlargement followed by an ordered fibration. As an application, we obtain Lawson’s version of Ehresmann’s Maximum Enlargement Theorem, from which can be deduced the classical theory of idempotent-pure inverse semigroup homomorphisms and $E$-unitary inverse semigroups.

We construct the freest idempotent-pure expansion of an inverse semigroup, generalizing an expansion of Margolis and Meakin for the group case. We also generalize the Birget-Rhodes prefix expansion to inverse semigroups with an application to partial actions of inverse semigroups. In the process of generalizing the latter expansion, we are led to a new class of idempotent-pure homomorphisms which we term F-morphisms. These play the same role in the theory of idempotent-pure homomorphisms that F-inverse monoids play in the theory of E-unitary inverse semigroups.
