OBJECTIVES/GOALS: In 2020, Baylor College of Medicine held a datathon to introduce a data warehouse, identify its capabilities/limitations, foster collaborations, and engage trainees. The event was held again in 2022, and lessons learned (e.g., tools for data self-service or team communication) were applied. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Senior faculty reviewed proposals with an emphasis on feasibility, impact, and relevance to quality improvement or population health. Selected teams worked with Information Technology (IT) for 2 months and presented findings at a 1-day event. Surveys were administered to participants before and after the event to evaluate their background, team characteristics, collaborations, knowledge before and after the datathon, perceived value of the datathon, and plans for future work. Descriptive statistics of respondents’ self-reports were tabulated. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: In 2022, 19 of 36 projects were accepted (13/33 in 2020). At both events, most projects studied quality improvement or clinical outcomes. Of 82 participants in 2022, 54 completed surveys. In 2022, 72% had no datathon experience (48% in 2020). Median effort was 10 person-hours; median IT time was 20% (20 and 10%, in 2020). Seven respondents finished and 21 partially finished their projects (1 and 11, in 2020); 92% made new collaborations (91% in 2020). Respondents strongly agreed that: the experience was valuable (n=28), they would participate in future datathons (n=30), and they would use the warehouse for future work (n=25). Twenty-seven have planned abstracts; 25 have planned manuscripts. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: The 2022 datathon had more participants with less experience, potentially due to improved promotion and training opportunities. Fewer person-hours and a higher percentage of IT time were required as compared to 2020, and more projects were completed, possibly due to increased IT efficiency.

Senior faculty selected proposals based on feasibility and impact. Selectees worked with Information Technology for 2 months and presented findings. A survey of participants showed diverse levels of experience, high perceived value of the datathon, high rates of collaboration, and significant increases in knowledge. A datathon can promote familiarity with a new data warehouse, guide data warehouse improvement, and promote collaboration.

Ni-based bulk metallic glasses and composites with high absolute densities exceeding 11 g/cm3 were synthesized via spark plasma sintering of Ni45Co10Ta25Nb20 powders produced from pulverized, melt-spun amorphous ribbons. Optimizing the synthesis via selection of sintering temperature, uniaxial load pressure, and powder mechanical screening yielded samples with relative densities of nearly 100% and hardness values in excess of 12.5 GPa without cracking. Mechanical testing included Weibull modulus determination for hardness and compression testing at 10-3 s-1 and 103 s-1 strain rates. The capability of using spark plasma sintering to fabricate high hardness, high density, large scale metallic glasses is demonstrated. The mechanical properties of these compacted comminuted melt-spun glass ribbons are presented.

In early 2012, South Africa's Western Cape Province enacted new alcohol control legislation amid mounting concern with the costs of alcohol-related harms. This has focused on urban shebeen closure to control the informal, unlicensed trade and the harms it generates through crime, violence and injury. In contrast to policy discourse, this paper contends that rather than existing outside regulation, the city's shebeeners embrace multiple (self and collective) regulatory strategies to manage the inherent risks of their own informality. Drawing on novel empirical data including a ‘business census’ and interviews with the police and liquor traders across four Cape Town case study sites, the paper adds new depth to contemporary engagements with the appropriate and equitable regulation of the South African informal liquor trade.

In order to improve the methodology for growing and maintaining corals in captivity, a consortium of European zoos, aquaria and academia executed a four-year public/private collaborative research and innovation project (CORALZOO) on the breeding and husbandry of stony corals. CORALZOO comprised the following topics: (1) sexual and asexual breeding of corals in captivity, including techniques for propagation, feeding and induction of natural coral colony morphogenesis; and (2) coral husbandry: development of generic bioassays to evaluate biotic and abiotic husbandry parameters and to monitor coral health, elaboration of methods for identification and treatment of coral diseases and optimization of transport and acclimation procedures. The results of this project are reviewed.

What did the British know about Islam before the modern period? The author reviews evidence which shows that there was contact with, and appreciation of, Muslim culture from almost the time of the Hegira in the seventh century. This appreciation varied and was reflected in different choices of material culture: coinage, ceramics and architecture, in successive periods from the eighth century to the nineteenth.
