We present the results of global three-dimensional radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the formation of soft X-ray emitting regions in active galactic nuclei by applying a radiation magnetohydrodynamic code based on the M1-closure scheme. The effect of Compton cooling is taken into account. When the surface density of the accretion flow exceeds the upper limit of the radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF), the optically thin, hot accretion flow near the black hole co-exists with the soft X-ray emitting, warm (T = 106 – 107 K) Comptonized region around r = 20 – 40rs, where rs is the Schwarzschild radius. Numerical results indicate that when the accretion rate approaches the Eddington accretion rate, the warm Comptonized region stays in optically thin for effective optical depth, Thomson thick, and radiation pressure dominant state. This region is found to oscillate between a geometrically thin, cool state and a geometrically thick state inflated by radiation pressure. The time variability of the accretion flow is consistent with that of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies.

The origin of red supergiant mass loss still remains to be understood. Characterizing the formation zone and the dust distribution within a few stellar radii above the surface is key to understanding the mass loss phenomenon. With its angular diameter of about 42 mas in the optical, Betelgeuse makes an ideal target to resolve the inner structures that represent potential signatures of dust formation. Past polarimetric observations reveal a dust environment in the first stellar radii. Depending on their characteristics and composition, dust grains could interact with the stellar radiation, trigger mass loss by momentum transfer from photons to dust to gas. Using spatially-resolved polarimetric observations of Betelgeuse, we detect a quasi-symmetric inner dust shell centered at ∼0.5 stellar radii above the photosphere and attempt at constraining its dust population.

Although red supergiants (RSGs) are observed to be undergoing vigorous mass loss, explaining the mechanism launching their winds has been a long-standing problem. Given the importance of mass loss to stellar evolution in this phase, this is a key uncertainty. In this contribution we present a recently published model (Kee et al. 2021) showing that turbulent pressure alone can extend the stellar atmosphere of an RSG to the degree that a wind is launched. This provides a fully analytic mass-loss prescription for RSGs. Moreover, utilising observationally inferred turbulent velocities for these objects, we find that this wind can carry an appropriate amount of mass to overall match observations. Intriguingly, when coupled to stellar evolution models the predicted mass-loss rates show that stars with initial masses above Mini∼17M⊙ may naturally evolve back to the blue and as such not end their lives as RSGs; this is also in overall good agreement with observations, here of Type II-P/L supernova progenitors. Moreover, since the proposed wind launching mechanism is not necessarily sensitive to metallicity, this could have important implications for stellar evolution predictions in low-metallicity environments.

Several populations of neutron stars have surface magnetic fields above the critical strength of 4.4 × 1013 G where the electron cyclotron energy equals its rest mass. These include high-field rotation-powered pulsars, X-ray dim isolated neutron stars (XDIN), and magnetars. In such ultra-strong fields, quantum effects in physical processes as well as additional exotic Quantum Electrodynamic processes only occurring at these high field strengths have a significant influence on the emitted radiation. Although very strong magnetic fields play a critical role both inside and outside of neutron stars, I will review primarily processes that operate in the neutron star magnetospheres and how they influence the observed radiation.

Multiphase outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) have a profound impact on the evolution of their host galaxies. The effects of AGN feedback are especially prominent in the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) of cool-core clusters, where there is a concentration of gas in all phases, ranging from cold molecular gas to hot, >107 K ionized plasma. In this proceeding I describe recent simulation efforts to understand the formation and evolution of the 10-kpc-scale Hα-emitting filaments driven by AGN activities. Combined with observed star formation regions co-spatial with the filaments, this feedback mechanism can directly contribute to the growth of the central galaxy, albeit delayed by the characteristic radiative cooling timescale, ∼10 Myr, of the outflowing plasma.

The evolution of the magnetic field in neutron star crusts because of the Hall effect has received significant attention over the last two decades, which is strongly justified because of the dominance of this effect in highly magnetised neutron stars. However, the applicability of the Hall effect is based on the assumption that the crust does not fail and sustains its rigidity. This assumption can be violated for substantially strong magnetic fields. If this is the case, the evolution of the magnetic field is described by a different set of equations, which include the effects of a non-rigid crust. In this talk, after a brief review of the main characteristic of the Hall evolution, I will discuss the impact a plastic flow of the crust has on the magnetic field, studying axisymmetric models. Moreover, the way the crust fails impacts the overall evolution, with major differences appearing if the failure is local, intermediate or global. Quite remarkably, crustal failure and plasticity do not annul the Hall effect, and under certain circumstances they may even lead to a more dramatic evolution. I will discuss the impact of these effects in the context of neutron star timing behaviour, with special focus on timing noise, outbursts and glitches.

This contribution focuses on a rare example of the class of post-Red Supergiants, IRAS 17163-3907, the central star of the Fried Egg nebula. In particular, we discuss some of our recently published results in detail. The inner parts of the circumstellar environment of this evolved massive star are probed at milli-arcsec resolution using VLTI’s GRAVITY instrument operating in the K-band (2 µm), while larger, arcsecond, scales are probed by VISIR diffraction limited images around 10 µm, supplemented by a complete Spectral Energy Distribution. The spectro-interferometric data cover important diagnostic lines (Brγ, Na I), which we are able to constrain spatially. Both the presence and size of the Na i doublet in emission has been traditionally challenging to explain towards other objects of this class. In this study we show that a two-zone model in Local Thermal Equilibrium can reproduce both the observed sizes and strengths of the emission lines observed in the K-band, without the need of a pseudo-photosphere. In addition, we find evidence for the presence of a third hot inner shell, and demonstrate that the star has undergone at least three mass-loss episodes over roughly the past century. To explain the properties of the observed non-steady mass-loss we explore pulsation-driven and line-driven mass-loss and introduce the bi-stability jump as a possible underlying mechanism to explain mass-loss towards Yellow Hypergiants.

To study the dynamics of relativistic flows in astrophysical objects such as radio jets, we have developed a new special relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) code based on the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme, a high-order finite difference scheme. The code includes different WENO versions, and high-order time integration methods such as the 4th-order accurate Runge-Kutta (RK4) and strong stability preserving RK (SSPRK), as well as the equations of state (EOSs) that closely approximate the EOS of the single-component perfect gas in relativistic regime. Additionally, it is optimized for the reproduction of complex structures in multi-dimensional flows, and implements a modification of eigenvalues for the acoustic modes to effectively control carbuncle instability. As the first application of the code, we have simulated ultra-relativistic jets of FR II radio galaxies, and studied the nonlinear flow structures, such as shocks, velocity shear, and turbulence, through large-scale.

While predominantly dipolar, large-scale magnetic fields are usually assumed in most studies involving neutron stars, there are multiple observational, theoretical hints and numerical simulations highlightening the importance of non-dipolar components. I review here the most important observational facts and numerical studies pointing towards the existence of magnetospheric currents and internal small-scale structures, arising from multipoles of poloidal and toroidal fields. This holds for all neutron star stages: at birth, during their lifetime and after a merger.

There are indications that the magnetic field evolution in galaxies might be massively shaped by tidal interactions and mergers between galaxies. The details of the connection between the evolution of magnetic fields and that of their host galaxies is still a field of research.

We use a combined approach of magnetohydrodynamics for the baryons and an N-body scheme for the dark matter to investigate magnetic field amplification and evolution in interacting galaxies.

We find that, for two colliding equal-mass galaxies and for varying initial relative spatial orientations, magnetic fields are amplified during interactions, yet cannot be sustained. Furthermore, we find clues for an active mean-field dynamo.

To decode the information stored within a spectrum, detailed modelling of the physical state is required together with accurate radiative transfer solution schemes. In the analysis of stellar spectra, the numerical model often needs to account for high velocity outflows, multi-dimensional structures, and the effects of binary companions. Focusing now on binary systems, we present the BOSS-3D spectral synthesis code, which is capable of calculating synthetic line profiles for a variety of binary systems. Assuming the state of the circumstellar material to be known, the standard pz-geometry is extended by defining individual coordinate systems for each object. By embedding these coordinate systems within the observer’s frame, BOSS-3D automatically accounts for outflows or discs within both involved systems, and includes all Doppler shifts. Moreover, the code accounts for different length-scales, and thus could also be used to analyse transit-spectra of planetary atmospheres. As a first application of BOSS-3D, we model the phase-dependent line profiles for the enigmatic binary (or multiple) system LB-1.

The physical properties of AGN such as accretion rate, column density, temperature of hot corona and other characteristics can be found from X-ray spectral data. We present the results of spatial and spectral analysis for Sy2 type galaxy NGC 3081 obtained with different mathematical tools of the Chandra Interactive Analysis of Observations software. We found evidence of extended emission in 0.5-3.0 keV as well as derived parameters for model A: photon index , column density , warm component and hot component . We detected the presence of a component of the reflection spectrum, Fe Kα emission line with and .

Magnetars are neutron stars with exceptionally strong dipole magnetic fields which are observed to display a range of x-ray flaring behavior, but the flaring mechanism is not well understood. The third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Virgo extended from April 1, 2019 to March 27, 2020, and contained x-ray flares from known magnetar SGR 1935+2154, as well as the newly-discovered magnetar, Swift J1818-1607. We search for gravitational waves coincident with these magnetar flares with minimally modeled, coherent searches which specifically target both short-duration gravitational waves produced by excited f-modes in the magnetar’s core, as well as long-duration gravitational waves motivated by the Quasi-Periodic Oscillations observed in the tails of giant flares. In this talk, we report on the methods and sensitivity estimates of there searches, and the astrophysical implications.

We run numerical simulations of massive colliding wind binaries, and quantify the accretion onto the secondary under different conditions. We set 3D simulation of a LBV–WR system and vary the LBV mass loss rate to obtain different values of wind momentum ratio η. We show that the mean accretion rate for stationary systems fits a power law Macc∝ η–1.6 for a wide range of η, until for extremely small η saturation in the accretion is reached. We find that the stronger the primary wind, the smaller the opening angle of the colliding wind structure (CWS), and compare it with previous analytical estimates. We demonstrate the efficiency of clumpy wind in penetrating the CWS and inducing smaller scale clumps that can be accreted. We propose that simulations of colliding winds can reveal more relations as the ones we found, and can be used to constrain stellar parameters.

During the late stages of a neutron star binary inspiral finite-size effects come into play, with the tidal deformability of the supranuclear density matter leaving an imprint on the gravitational-wave signal. As demonstrated in the case of GW170817—the first direct detection of gravitational waves from a neutron star binary—this can lead to strong constraints on the neutron star equation of state. As detectors become more sensitive, effects which may have a smaller influence on the neutron star tidal deformability need to be taken into consideration. Dynamical effects, such as oscillation mode resonances triggered by the orbital motion, have been shown to contribute to the tidal deformability, especially close to the neutron star coalesence. We calculate the contribution of the various stellar oscillation modes to the tidal deformability and demonstrate the (anticipated) dominance of the fundamental mode, showing what the impact of the matter composition is on the tidal deformability.

We present Ekster, a new method for simulating the formation and dynamics of individual stars in a relatively low-resolution gas background. Here, we use Ekster to simulate star cluster formation in two different regions from each of two galaxy models with different spiral potentials. We simulate these regions for 3 Myr to study where and how star clusters form. We find that massive GMC regions form more massive clusters than sections of spiral arms. Additionally we find that clusters form both by accreting gas and by merging with other proto-clusters, the latter happening more frequently in the denser GMC regions.

Some binary stars experience common envelope evolution, which is accompanied by drastic loss of angular momentum, mass, and orbital energy and which leaves behind close binaries often involving at least one white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole. The best studied phase of common envelope is the dynamical inspiral lasting few original orbital periods. We show theoretical interpretation of observations of V1309 Sco and AT2018bwo revealing that binaries undergo substantial prolonged mass loss before the dynamical event amounting up to few solar masses. This mass loss is concentrated in the orbital plane in the form of an outflow or a circumbinary disk. Collision between this slower mass loss and the subsequent faster dynamical ejection powers a bright red transient. The resulting radiative shock helps to shape the explosion remnant and provides a site of dust and molecule formation.

The winds observed around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are generally attributed to radiation pressure on dust, which is formed in the extended dynamical atmospheres of these pulsating, strongly convective stars. Current radiation-hydrodynamical models can explain many of the observed features, and they are on the brink of delivering a predictive theory of mass loss. This review summarizes recent results and ongoing work on winds of AGB stars, discussing critical ingredients of the driving mechanism, and first results of global 3D RHD star-and-wind-in-a-box simulations. With such models it becomes possible to follow the flow of matter, in full 3D geometry, all the way from the turbulent, pulsating interior of an AGB star, through its atmosphere and dust formation zone into the region where the wind is accelerated by radiation pressure on dust. Advanced instruments, which can resolve the stellar atmospheres, where the winds originate, provide essential data for testing the models.

A detailed description of the properties of dense matter in extreme conditions, as those within Neutron Star cores, is still an open problem, whose solution is hampered by both the lack of empirical data, and by the difficulties in developing a suitable theoretical framework for the microscopic nuclear dynamics in such regimes.

We report here the results of a study aimed at inferring the properties of the repulsive three-nucleon interaction, driving the stiffness of the equation of state at high densities, by performing bayesian inference on current and future astrophysical observations.

Multidimensional mathematical analysis, like Machine Learning techniques, determines the different features of objects, which is difficult for the human mind. We create a machine learning model to predict galaxies’ detailed morphology (∼ 300000 SDSS-galaxies with z < 0.1) and train it on a labeled dataset defined within the Galaxy Zoo 2 (GZ2). We use convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to classify the galaxies into five visual types (completely rounded, rounded in-between, smooth cigar-shaped, edge-on, and spiral) and 34 morphological classes attaining >94% of accuracy for five-class morphology prediction except for the cigar-shaped (∼ 87%) galaxies.
